The earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia Friday, reportedly took more than 800 lives,

with the death toll to expected to rise.

Over in Japan, the powerful Typhoon Trami swept the country, killing 2 people and inuring

at least 120 others.

KIM Da-mi updates us on the situations.

Indonesia's disaster agency says the latest death toll from Friday's earthquake and tsunami

stands at 832.

But with many still unaccounted for, Singapore's The Straits Times has reported that the final

death toll will surpass 1,200.

Most of the confirmed deaths were from the city of Palu on Sulawesi Island, but officials

are bracing for the numbers to rise as connections with outlying areas are restored.

Rescuers are continuing to dig through debris with their bare hands in Palu, which was hit

by waves as high as six meters following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

The Red Cross estimates that more than 1.6 million people have been affected by the earthquake

and tsunami.

Further damage is also expected as smaller aftershocks hit the island.

Meanwhile, in Japan, a powerful typhoon swept through the western city of Osaka on Sunday.

Two people have been confirmed dead with two missing and at least 120 injured.

According to Japan's NHK, the storm's maximum wind speed of 216 kilometres per hour is the

strongest since 1991 when wind speed was first measured.

The storm comes less than a month after Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit the country

in 25 years, left more than eleven dead in early September.

Typhoon Trami has caused widespread disruption, including flight cancellations and power outages

in more than 750,000 homes.

After crossing the main island of Honshu on Monday, the typhoon is expected to dissipate

on Tuesday morning.

7-Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto: Episode 2 | Japan's New Golden Route | japan-guide.com - Duration: 6:54.

Previously on Episode One.

In this three part series we are taking a seven day six night trip from Tokyo to Kyoto,

but not by the usual route along the Pacific coast known as the "Golden Route", which

most tourists take.

Instead we are traveling through Japan's "New Golden Route" which delves into the

country's rural interior, continues along the beautiful Sea of Japan coast, and finishes

at Kyoto.

A great way to travel along this New Golden Route is the Hokuriku Arch Pass, a 7-day pass

exclusively available to overseas tourists that allows for unlimited use of all the JR Lines

shown on this map, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

In episode one, which covered the first two days of our adventure, we made our way from

Tokyo to the Snow Monkeys in Nagano.

Now in Episode 2 we'll make our way along the Sea of Japan coast and end in the mountain

town of Takayama.

So join me, Sam Evans, as we travel from Tokyo to Kyoto along Japan's New Golden Route.

Day 3

We start the day traveling to Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, where we'll enjoy

a scenic bike ride along the coast before having lunch at a local sushi shop.

We then head to Toyama Prefecture where we will take a train into the Kurobe Gorge, one

of Japan's deepest and most beautiful gorges, and end our day at Kuronagi Onsen.

After getting off the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Itoigawa Station, we backtrack a little

and take a local train to reach the town of Nou, where we head to the "Marine Dream"

roadside Station.

From there we'll enjoy a scenic 40 min bike ride along the coast, all the way to Sushi

Katsu, a sushi restaurant not far from Itoigawa Station.

It's the morning of Day 3 of our adventure and we are here in Nou in Niigata Prefecture.

Now what we're going to do this morning is hire a rental cycle and cycle a few kilometers

down that way into central Itoigawa.

It's a beautiful day, the birds are singing, so let's get on with this!

So we've got the rental bike, let's go!

We just arrived at Sushi Katsu, a traditional local sushi restaurant right by the coast

so you can bet the fish is going to be amazingly fresh.

Following our delicious sushi lunch we make our way by Hokuriku shinkansen and local train

to Unazuki Onsen.

There, we transfer to the Kurobe Gorge Railway to Kuronagi Station.

Our stop for the night is the remote riverside Kuronagi Ryokan located a picturesque 20 minute

hike from the station.

So we finished our wonderful riverside bath and we've sat down to our 3rd night's

meal.

And it's a traditional ryokan meal, which we've had now 3 nights in a row but notice

that they are all different, depending a lot on local specialties.

Day 4

After an enjoyable ryokan breakfast we head further up the gorge to Keyakidaira, the final

station of the Kurobe Gorge Railway, where we will take in some of the beautiful landscapes

before travelling all the way to Takayama, to enjoy some of the local cuisine.

We just arrived at Keyakidaira the final stop on the Kurobe Railway.

This place is famous for its natural beauty so let's go and explore.

It's now time to make a journey towards Takayama via the Hokuriku Shinkansen from

Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen to Toyama, and then take the Takayama line to Takayama, where we'll

head to the famous Old Town district to end our day with some local delicacies.

After starting out the day in the kurobe gorge we finally arrived in Takayama, which is famous

for its Old Town, and it's one of the most beautiful and well preserved in all of Japan.

When in Takayama there are 2 must try things: the delicacy of Hida Beef, and the local sake.

Tonight we're in a sake brewery's restaurant where I am going to enjoy both, ahead of our

big day tomorrow in which we are going to explore Takayama's old town before heading

on to Kanazawa.

Itadakimasu!

And that concludes Episode 2 of our journey.

Make sure to join us in Episode 3, as we explore more beautiful locations

and enjoy unique experiences

and finally make our way to Kyoto where our adventure will come to an end.

TBTB -- Japan 2018 -- TBTB explores the Sand Dunes of Tottori - Duration: 4:44.

(gong gonging)

(light music)

- [Videographer] Hey, everybody.

We are now officially at the sand dunes in Tottori,

very rare because the only sand dunes in Japan are here

and it's rare to actually see them,

and of course, they overlook the beautiful Sea of Japan.

Now, I have climbed these sand dunes twice

and I find it grueling.

It might not be as bad today because we had all this rain

and the sand is wet and you're not sinking in it as much

and the sun isn't out as much,

so it might be a much more pleasant climb.

But anyway, Pamela and Steven

are both gonna be doing the climb.

So, here's what's gonna happen, they're gonna climb

to the top and they're gonna report to you from there

and I'll watch them depart and come back.

Have fun guys.

- Bye.

- [Videographer] As they depart, just to give you an idea

of what it's like here, you could see they do camel rides,

really beautiful.

And today's really gorgeous because for the first time

since we got here, it's actually not raining.

(laughs)

We had a lot of rain.

Today, it's cloudy and you could see

that the sand is a little wet, which is nice.

It's a good climb today.

Meanwhile, as Pamela and Steven climb the sand dunes,

Steve...

- I have remained behind because I'm not stupid.

I'm not having a heart attack in Tottori.

(laughing)

Just saying.

- [Videographer] Ann...

- I wish I could ride a camel.

- [Videographer] Yeah, I do, too.

- I can't figure out once you hang glide off the top

of the dunes onto the beach, how do you get back?

- [Videographer] That's a good question.

I have no idea.

- I don't either and it freaks me out.

- [Videographer] Well, the first time we were here,

which we did a video blog of that time...

- I thought I murdered you.

- Hi, we made it to the top of the sand dunes

and out here again, the Sea of Japan.

- It's beautiful, huh?

- [Pamela] Very.

- We feel like we made a trip across the desert now

with all this sand and there's camel's back there,

so I don't know where we are, Saudi Arabia or something.

I don't know where we are.

I don't think we're in Japan.

- [Pamela] Wherever it is, it's transformed me.

- Exactly.

Alright, we'll talk to you later, bye.

- [Videographer] Okay, Pamela and Steven are pushing,

they're climbing.

They're doing it, they're doing it.

They're almost here, they're at the home stretch.

I can see they're making it.

Yep, little by little, little by little.

Alright, you guys!

Whoo!

Did you see Korea?

(laughs)

Korea's on the other side, yes.

It's beautiful, huh?

Tell me, how was the climb?

- Life changing. - [Videographer] Yeah.

Life changing.

- We did the steep slope.

- [Videographer] I saw, you did the expert trail,

you did the double diamond trail there.

- It feels good on our feet, the wind felt so good.

- [Videographer] It's a good climb.

- I need a picture of the camel.

- [Videographer] Alright, I'm proud of you guys.

Congratulations, you are now official.

This is actually our only day off, you guys.

Just wanna let you know, we've been working every day,

we've been doing workshops, we've done symposiums

and of course, we've done the show and so this day, Tuesday,

here we are at the sand dunes.

Thank you TCG for your wonderful support,

couldn't do this without you and we'll see you soon.

Japanese who moved to North Korea on promise of 'better life' sue over lies - Daily News - Duration: 2:52.

A group of people who moved to North Korea after being promised a better life are set for a court showdown with Kim Jong-un's government, saying they were lied to

And the secretive state faces calls to allow Japanese citizens lured there between 1959 and 1984 to leave

During this time more than 90,000 migrated to North Korea because of the 'Paradise on Earth' campaign, which painted the country as an idyllic and prosperous place to live

Five victims are now suing the country for damages.  Hiroko Saito, who travelled with her husband and one-year-old daughter, told the Washington Post: "We had been told this was paradise, but this clearly wasn't the case

"Everyone started crying: 'Get me away from here. Get me back home.'"  Their claim is supported by campaign group Human Rights Watch, which has called for people still living in Kim's North Korea to be allowed to return to Japan

The organisation's Japan director, Kanae Doi, said: "The Paradise on Earth victims believed the propaganda, but what they encountered in North Korea was hell, not paradise

"  Human Rights Watch has demanded that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confronts Kim and helps ensure people still in North Korea are allowed to return

Read More Inside North Korea  Ms Doi said: "The Japanese government should face its role in facilitating this historical wrong, recognize that the victims are still suffering, and set the situation right by supporting these victims' demands

"  People who made the move from Japan to North Korea were told that housing, food and clothes would be fully guaranteed

Both the Japanese and North Korean governments supported the operation, although they are now accused of luring ethnic Koreans using false premises

They claim that North Korea solely wanted to meet its own labour shortages.

Powerful Typhoon Trami batters Japan - Duration: 2:26.

A powerful typhoon brought down trees onto railroad tracks and kicked up debris across Tokyo as it brushed past the Japanese capital early on Monday, killing two people and stranding thousands as train lines were closed or severely delayed

Typhoon Trami made landfall in western Japan on Sunday evening and threatened heavy rains, strong winds and landslides on the northern-most main island of Hokkaido, the Japan Meteorological Agency said

The island was hit by a deadly earthquake last month.  The typhoon, rated by Tropical Storm Risk as a category 1, the lowest on a five-point scale, killed two people and injured almost 130, public broadcaster NHK said

Another two people were missing, it said, and almost 400,000 households were without power

Aerial footage on NHK showed hundreds of people waiting outside train stations, with several major commuter lines closed since Sunday

More than 230 flights were cancelled, mainly in northern Japan, NHK said.  Kansai International Airport in Osaka in western Japan said it had opened its runways as scheduled at 6 a

m. (2100 GMT Sunday), after being closed since 11 a.m. on Sunday.  The airport had only fully reopened on Sept

21 after being heavily flooded earlier that month by Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years

Japanese politician kicked out of meeting for sucking cough drops - Duration: 4:03.

The Japanese politician who was censured for bringing her baby to work has been kicked out of another local government meeting – this time for sucking cough sweets

Yuka Ogata, 43, attracted global headlines when she was ordered to leave Kumamoto Municipal Assembly in southern Japan last year after bringing her seven-month-old baby to work

Ms Ogata had hoped the move would highlight the challenges facing working mothers in Japan but ended up having to leave on the spot before receiving an official warning from her mainly-male colleagues

And it seems Ms Ogata has incurred the wrath of her fellow politicians once again: she was reportedly ejected from the same assembly last Friday after speaking at the podium with a cough drop in her mouth

Her seemingly innocuous action triggered an eight-hour suspension of the assembly as the issue was extensively debated, according to Kyodo News agency

While there is no official policy on eating and drinking inside the assembly (the equivalent of a local council), some members reportedly argued that she had violated a clause protecting its integrity by sucking a cough drop

Among her critics was Kazufumi Onishi, the mayor of Kumamoto, who was quoted in local media as saying: "It's unacceptable for a responsible adult to ask questions with (cough) drops in their mouth

She needs to admit her fault."  Defending her actions, however, Ms Ogata said: "I have not been well for the past several days and decided to take cough drops so that I would not trouble others with my coughing

It's regrettable that I've been forced to leave the room without being given the opportunity to explain myself

"  The debacle not only highlights the pros and cons of cough sweets in a working environment – but also casts a sharp spotlight on a society which is strictly bound by seemingly inflexible etiquette, rules and hierarchy

For Ms Ogata, the cough drop debate is the latest in of a string of high-profile challenges the mother-of-two has faced since being elected to the assembly in April 2015

In addition to being asked to leave after bringing her baby to work last November, Ms Ogata's earlier official requests for permission to breastfeed him in chamber and for daycare assistance for assembly staff were all reportedly turned down

Japan famously lags far behind other industrialised nations in terms of gender equality in the workplace, despite the prime minister Shinzo Abe's high profile push for "womenomics"

Japanese politics in particular has long been renowned as a male dominated domain: women accounted for only 9 per cent of lower house members last year, putting Japan in 165th place among 193 countries, according to the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union
