Hello guys, welcome back to my channel.
Today I wanna make this video in English.
I really want to improve my English.
I really want to improve my speaking skill.
Maybe, you can't understand my English for some reasons.
Like, maybe I have a bad pronunciation.
I have a strong Indonesian accent.
Sorry about that.
Okay, let's just get started.
In this video, I wanna explain you about.
Living and working in Singapore and in Japan.
I had been living in Singapore for almost 2 years
and I also had an experience living in Japan for almost 1 year.
The first thing that really really obvious about the difference between
Singapore and Japan is the language.
As you may know, with only English
We can have a comfortable life living in Singapore
We can (easily) buy some foods,
going to restaurant,
going to shopping mall,
opening your bank account,
almost anything.
But in Japan, with only English, I can tell you it's not enough.
Actually, I can't speak Japanese.
(Japanese)
When the first time I came to Japan, I found that a lot of immigration officers in Japan
couldn't speak English.
When I tried to buy some foods in the restaurant, the waitress couldn't speak English.
The waitress couldn't explain about the menu.
And, when I tried to go to convenience store, I found that the clerk couldn't speak English.
I tried to communicate with him with English.
But, he couldn't understand.
He couldn't understand what I was trying to say.
Or, maybe because my English was really really bad?
I don't know.
But, yes, the language barrier is really really exist in Japan,
Even in Tokyo.
Maybe you always heard that Singapore is the most expensive city in the world.
But for a single person like me,
Tokyo could be more expensive.
Let me explain about this.
Yes, the housing in Singapore is really really expensive.
But, for a single person,
Actually we don't need to rent the whole apartment by ourselves.
We can just rent only one room.
Yes, it's common.
It's common as an expat in Singapore.
Renting only one room instead of the whole apartment.
It's a lot cheaper.
Fortunately, in Japan, you can get a cheaper apartment.
That is by living a bit far from central of Tokyo.
Like, some people try to live outside of Tokyo.
I know, I know it will be so far from your office,
If you have an office in the central of Tokyo.
You will spend your time in the train.
That's the only problem.
Oh wait, actually there is one more problem.
If you live a bit far from central of Tokyo.
That is the public transportation cost.
Yes, the public transportation cost in Japan actually more expensive than in Singapore.
So if you are someone who like to travel around this will cost you more and more money.
About the food, it's really easy to find a cheaper food in Singapore.
There are a lot of food courts.
But, In japan,
I don't know whether there is a food court or not.
Actually it's still possible to get a cheaper food in Japan.
Like, you can buy some lunch boxes from convenience store.
Or, you can just,
eat a fast food like Matsuya or Yoshinoya.
If you don't have any problem with eating that kind of food,
You can get a cheaper food in Japan.
Oh ya for halal food or vegetarian food,
Sometimes it can be more expensive compare with normal Japanese food.
But in Singapore, I don't think there is a price difference.
Because it's really really easy to find halal food and vegetarian food.
Yes, there are so many interesting places in Japan.
Japan is quite big country.
There are so many things you can explore in Japan.
But compare with Singapore,
Singapore is quite small, right?
Usually the expat in Singapore will find themselves get bored.
To solve this problem sometimes they try to travel,
Outside of the country, like
Visiting Indonesia
Visiting Malaysia
Or some other nearest countries.
Japan has 4 seasons, while Singapore has only 2 seasons.
For someone who live in 2 season's country like me.
Yes, Japan can be more interesting.
We can get an experience living in Spring,
with it's beautiful cherry blossom.
We can get an experience living in Summer,
with it's beach life.
We also can get an experience living in Autumn,
with it's yellow and read leaf.
And lastly, living in Winter.
Of course with it's white snow.
In case of diversity, Singapore is better.
There are some races,
some languages,
And even there are a lot of foreigners living in Singapore compare with Japan.
But of course this is depends on your preference.
Maybe some of you prefer to live in a monocultural society like Japan?
The Japanese food could be more interesting for a foreigner.
As Indonesian,
I found that the Japanese foods are really unique.
The taste,
The looks,
Yes of course the Japanese foods are also tasty.
But please note that as a Muslim or Vegetarian,
It can be really difficult to find a Halal food or Vegetarian food in Japan.
But in Singapore, you may have no problem at all to find Halal food or Vegetarian food.
I know this is depends on the company, but based on someone's experience,
the working hours in Japan are longer than in Singapore.
Why?
I will give you one example.
I don't want to say the name of the company.
I don't say this is my experience.
Okay?
For example there is a company,
They have 2 branches,
One in Singapore and one in Japan.
Officially the working hours are the same.
Both offices, Japan office and Singapore office have the same working hours.
Normally we only need to work from 10 am until 7 pm.
The people in Singapore office normally they will leave the office around 8 pm or 9 pm.
Almost all people already left around that time.
But in Japan office,
Even until 10 pm a lot of people still in the office.
And even until midnight, some people still in the office.
And some of the people even sleep in the office.
In Japan, when I left around midnight,
I tried to catch the last train,
the train was really really crowded,
the train was full.
Means that a lot of Japanese people leave the office around midnight.
The income tax in Singapore is cheaper than in Japan.
When I was working in Singapore,
I remember the tax is around 7%.
But in Japan is around 20%.
And there are some other taxes that need to be paid in Japan.
Like, resident tax,
and insurance,
and pension.
So with the same salary you will less money in Japan because of these taxes.
Maybe not all of you already heard about this,
Japan is quite famous for its "lifetime employment" system.
Japanese people will work only for 1 company in his life.
And the Japanese law actually really protective to us.
It's not easy for a Japanese company to fire someone.
They need to provide a solid reason,
For example, like,
Maybe someone who has a criminal activity.
Maybe someone who take a long absence without a reason.
The point is you may really get a stable contract in Japan, but not in Singapore.
If you want to move to another company in Japan,
actually you don't need to apply for a new working visa.
The working visa,
It's independent to the specific company.
So for example like,
If you leave the company, and want to change your job,
you can just use the previous working visa.
But in Singapore, if you want to move to a different company,
Means you need to apply for a new working visa.
Means we can say that changing job in Japan,
could be more easy compare with Singapore.
Because you don't need to apply for new working visa.
You don't need to wait for months,
waiting for the approval.
You don't need to face a rejection of you visa application.
Okay, that's all.
I don't want to say which one is better.
Singapore or Japan.
It depends on what you want in your life.
Some of you may prefer Japan,
and some of you may prefer Singapore.
