that's the foundation right Liberal Arts is the foundation for every single

advanced degree for every single career that's out there from criminal justice

law medicine technology science to languages and art we serve our country

very well by creating the next generation of public servants service

members in the military but we also take a more holistic view of the citizen

soldier that we're trying to create right we're not just creating students

to serve in a profession of a major in programs that will serve them no matter

what job they end up in they're still going to be citizens, they're still going

to be somebody's neighbor they're going to be fathers mothers friends and so

we're trying to equip them with the skills that will take them for the next

60 70 years of their life to be adaptable flexible to be able to make

sense and be engaged with the world that they're living at some point our

students in their careers are going to be asked to look at to read to

understand to analyze a mass of information and to synthesize it into a

15 second elevator presentation into a PowerPoint presentation into a

presentation in the White House or in war room or in a situation room or in a

conference room and those are skills that are required no matter what job and

when we graduate we are everywhere serving in our battlefields and our

boardrooms and our communities across the nation

and around the globe

Ross Thibodeau, PA, Physician Assistant, University of Vermont Medical Center - Duration: 1:39.

Hi, my name is Ross Thibodeau and I'm an orthopedic physician assistant.

In the hip and knee clinic, we do offer total joint arthroplasty, both hip

replacement and knee replacement, but we also do offer the complete service of

non-operative therapies for any hip and knee problem, generally speaking. I really

enjoy being able to work both in clinic and also in the operating room with our

surgeons directly hands-on.

One of the most rewarding things about working in the knee and hip clinic is

being able to see the outcomes and follow the patients through the whole

process. I can see them come in on day one, a lot of times patients are having

difficulty walking, difficulty with basic activities of daily living, and we can

start them on the correct path, provide them with pain relief and, if need be,

surgery for their issue and then we get to see them back again in clinic and see

how well they're doing and see how happy they are.

Barco weConnect and Overture enable innovative teaching at the University of Northampton - Duration: 2:49.

The University of Northhampton is a teaching focused, employability focused, university.

Active, blended learning, which is our signature pedagogy, revolves around student-centeredness.

It revolves around making the students, the content-creators, being the knowledge creators

as well as the knowledge sharers.

We wanted systems in place that would encourage all three types of interaction:

Learner-learner / Learner – Tutor / Learner – content

They were born in the 21st century, so as millennials they expect a different type of

experience.

so we're looking for technologies that allow us to serve up our teaching on demand and

be scalable and flexible.

The products we're using are Barco weConnect and Overture.

weConnect gives us the collaborative classroom experience and the screen-sharing experience

Overture underpins all of that as a kind of 3rd party control system that's highly customizable

It allows us to take away some of the load from our lecturers because they no longer

have to use control panels from inside of the room.

We can automate a lot of the turning on and off of our equipment and it gives us better

monitoring and it helps us deliver a full, complete solution.

You're saving on maintenance, you're saving on people and man hours.

You're more efficient in your teaching so you're actually getting more out of your

money.

And to our customers, it looks like one service.

You need to be very good in the pathway to create a learning journey and a learning experience

for the students and to create that and to maintain that, requires a different kind of

preparation and a much more mature relationship between student and teacher,

namely appreciating and valueing the student's contribution.

It is helping us becoming a good teacher and even becoming a better teacher.

If you used to struggle as a teacher, you now actually have a tool to develop a culture

of participation.

Once you go weConnect, you don't go back!

Making The Most From University open Days! Student Support Sundays w/ Whatuni - Duration: 4:38.

Hello! Welcome to ... Welcome to a special edition of student support Sunday's on a

Wednesday Why a Wednesday?! Well, 'WhatUni'

who sent me this. Lovely cup, nothing in it

tweeted this about if you are going to University this year, to check out one of

the open days. they can help you find one, plan it, make sure you ask all the right

questions but myself and Whatuni also talked about making sure you make

the most of open days when you go. So, this videos all about giving you five of

the best tips of making the most of your open days and the first one is GO!

Please Go It baffles me why so many students don't

go I mean you're probably planning to go but sometimes it's a case of "I don't

know if I want to go to that university yet" (or) "I don't know if I want to go to

university at all!" This is why you go! This is why you go, the university

open day is designed for you to go have a look; is this University for you? Is the

course for you? Is University at all for you? This is why you go! it gets you from

the laptop, from the perspective (or whether it's called) in the

flesh! This is why you go, I mean it is free and gives you chance to sink your teeth into the world of higher education

The second one seems obvious but ask questions! Get involved!

When I went on some open days or even when I was helping the

university as a as a volunteer, there were a lot of students who come in to have

a look at the university but just sat in the back (you know) just sitting there, just smiling and

nodding and just being quite passive, just going with it. (But) if you want to

make the most of an open day, get involved! Put your hand up and ask a

question, have a walk around, try and speak to students or tutors whenever you

can to get involved. Now, I'll be honest, some of the students who were at the back

not doing anything, did tend to have a parent either side to them; asking

the questions for them - I'm gonna get into that shortly but I'm also going to

do a video separately about three questions that students are just not asking and

they really need to ask! The video will be here somewhere, might be there

wherever I put it. I've not done it yet and now we're gonna go into number three!

Which, as I foreshadowed; Ditch The Parents! Picking a university is one of

the biggest choices of your life, it really is. It's also one of the first

real independent decisions you're gonna make as well and I think

it's great to start as you mean to go on and that's by making this decision

yourself. Now, to be fair there's nothing actually wrong with taking your parents

with you. Any parent just wants the best for their child but I've seen it before

as I said before, a (student) at the back just sitting here, the parents are there

asking questions you know, just really interrupting, even challenging them

asking "why should my daughter go to this university" "are you going to get her

a job at the end?" "9,000 pounds that's a lot of money, Cheryl!" it's a fair

point to be fair, it's a good question but it's for you to make that decision :)

you're bout to take a big step into adult life and I just think it's best

that you make this one by yourself but I'll leave to you to decide.

The forth one is all about the facilities. Now, universities are not all lecture halls and

classrooms. Every University has a lot to offer, many of them compete in what they

have to offer! Take the time to check out the university accommodation, especially

if that's quite a sticking point for you. Check out the gym, the sports area,

specificity the sports facilities. Check out the media area, a lot of

people don't check that out. Just because you're not doing media studies or film

studies doesn't mean you can't make use of what they have to offer. The University

probably has a Film Society which means you can still go in and use the cool

computers, the cool cameras, a lot of universities have kitted out with the

latest Apple design software. There really is a lot out there for you to

sink your teeth in and have a look so take that time look around University

and just think "oh I never knew this was here" and number five would actually be

outside the University. Which seems kind of counterproductive to this video but

if you are wanting to moving away from University, if you're like me if you're going from

Liverpool to Leeds, Leeds is a very exciting City and if you was to an

open day at one of the universities there, I would also encourage you to get

around the city center see what else is out there! Whether it's just the nightlife

or if you're boring like me ad want to see some of the museums but see what

else they have to offer. it's well worth doing and there's my five simple tips

for making the most out of your open day and I can't stress the first one the most

make sure you go! You can never come out of an open date any worse for the

experience. If you need any tips on how to find one, how to plan it, what should

you do? What to ask? Whatuni? has a fantastic source on this, I'll link it

below. This video is brought to you by Whatuni? and myself and it's been a

very fun video to make. If you like the video

please subscribe if you want to see more and I love answering comments

so please leave one below and I'll be happy to get back to you -

Texas State University Hosts 29th Annual Hostage Negotiation Training - Duration: 2:08.

A hostage negotiator and his team work to calm tensions and bring a standoff to a peaceful

conclusion.

But this is a training simulation, hosted by the school of criminal justice at

Texas State University.

This competition brings more than 300 law enforcement officers from around Texas, the

U.S. and even as far away as Europe and Asia.

Police Psychologist Michael McMains, helped launch this annual training 29 years ago.

"It puts one negotiation team against another, to help sharpen their skills and become better

at their craft," says McMains.

"I say it's a competition but this is probably the best training we'll get all

year because it's so intel driven, they try to make it as real as possible."

In this facility near the San Marcos airport, the competing teams of hostage negotiators

are in one room, while Texas State students, playing the role of hostage takers are in

a separate building.

"They've all got the same script, they've all got the same timeline, and that allows

the judges to evaluate them to see what their communication skills are like, what their

team functioning is like, whether they're in their roles correctly," says McMains.

"What better place to learn the good and the bad points than in a practice situation

like this," says Lewis.

This training is critical because when negotiators can initiate a conversation in a hostage situation,

there is a 95% chance no one gets hurt.

"What happens in negotiations is you step back, you let people emote, you listen to

them very closely and that process helps bring that tension level down and that anxiety down,"

This scenario training has proved so effective to help negotiators get better at what they

do, many of these officers have been coming here for more than 20 years.

Art students become their best selves at Manchester University - Duration: 2:47.

I've never really had any other passion besides creating and showing others what was on my mind.

I had gone to other art schools and other colleges' art programs, and it was just too

clean, like the walls were too pristine and like too white and too many fluorescent lights,

and then I came into Winger, and I could really smell the oils, I could smell the paint, I

could smell the charcoal, and it actually felt like a place of learning for art.

I draw my ideas from what I've learned in the classroom, to say, you know, what in my

art do I want people to see?

I want to change people's minds through my art, perhaps maybe even joining it with my

environmental studies major and getting people to see that nature's important through art.

Inevitably, our art majors will find an area that they are passionate about through advising,

we work really closely with them to figure out how does art connect to these other things

that I am interested in?

We're really excited about the new changes that we have in our program, we have the Art

major, we have the Art Education major, but specifically the art major has changed.

We now have four new concentrations, we have Community Arts Organization, we have Art History,

we have Graphic Design, and of course we still have Studio.

We have a lot of outside the classroom, outside the studio experiences that we want our students

to partake in.

They have the opportunity to have internships, both on campus within our local community,

and across the globe, depending upon where they choose to study abroad, and they've had

wonderful experiences with those.

I went abroad in England my junior year of college, and when I was there I studied animation

and illustration, which was something I have always wanted to do.

I participated in a lot of juried shows, which really helped me learn the art world and what

it takes to be an artist in the real world.

I've been able to meet with artists one on one, through the events that the art department

has held, but I believe it is you that makes the choice.

Are you gonna take these opportunities.

The art department provides many chances for you to get involved and to talk to professionals,

but it's you who has to make that first step.

We focus on skill building, absolutely we want you to be good visual artists.

But we also want you to explore what the process does for you, how it can reaffirm your beliefs,

how it can connect you with other people, it becomes a part of you and a part of your

character and your personality.
