James Schramko here. Today, I want to tell you how a constant self tuning system

can really help you get great results. Many, many years ago, a couple of decades

ago actually, I read a book by a plastic surgeon.

His name was Maxwell Maltz and the book was called Psycho-Cybernetics and one of

the core ideas in this book is that humans are goal-seeking devices.

We basically get what we think about. Now, I think there was a story about a missile

controlling system. If we launch a missile and it's got a controlling

guidance system, it will constantly check in to see if it's on track or not to hit

the target. That's basically the system that I use when I go about my business.

I think about where I'm heading and one way to do this is to get reporting. I get

frequent reporting. In fact, my team puts out a report every day with some of our

lead metrics and from that report we can see if we're on track or not with where

we're trying to go and we can make small adjustments. Making small adjustments on

an ongoing basis is much easier than going too far down the track and

realizing that you are way off track. So hopefully this helps you think about

humans as being a goal-seeking device and get regular reporting so that you

know if you're on track or not. I'm James Schramko. If you like this you'll

probably like my book, Work Less Make More available on Amazon and Audible.

State of Mind: My Relationship with Self-Harm - Duration: 2:27.

(gentle music)

- I think sometimes when we think about self-harm,

we think about the physical things you might do to yourself.

But a lot of times, there is the mental aspect of it.

We wake up every day and put a backpack of self-hate,

depression, on every day, you carry around it every day,

and until you acknowledge that you're wearing it,

you're gonna keep carrying that weight.

It's gonna come out one way or another.

Blessings to the failed attempt of killing myself.

To the long nights, the open roads and open scars

whose swallow I escaped.

To the hungry depression, never full, never satisfied.

The gnarled dog in the corner of my tidy home.

Blessings to my apartment I keep clean

in place of a diploma.

To the hood and its imposter syndrome.

To this brown boy joy, my mixed heritage,

my knotted hair, and ambiguous features.

Blessings to the strays.

The animals wandering for home.

The times I led the herd.

The times I was the pack, lonely and anxious.

To the misdiagnosed, the undiagnosed, broken self,

and tattered smile.

Blessings to the push.

To not giving up or in.

To the days after nearly the last.

To the days that fight to feel the sun's heat.

To the days that only know a countdown until the next.

Blessings to tomorrow.

How it arrives, how it arrives, how it arrives.

How it sits with impossible until the blessings of the now.

How it begs to be lived in.

How it never wants to pull for your attention.

But always deserves it.

Girl, 14, who took her own life was sent self-harm images even after her death - Duration: 4:45.

The father of a 14-year-old girl who took her own life has said that he believes social media played a part in his daughter's death

Molly Russell 'showed no obvious signs' of severe mental health issues before she was found dead in her bedroom in November 2017, her dad Ian said

After her death, her family discovered she had been 'suggested' disturbing posts on Instagram and Pinterest about anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide

Molly Russell, 14, took her own life after looking at images normalising suicide on social media (Picture: PA) Pinterest hosts pictures of self-harming, fists clutching bottles of pills and mottos which normalise suicide, all of which can be seen by children over 13

The website uses algorithms to suggest content that might interest a user, and even sent her Molly a personalised email containing images of self-harm in the month after her death

Drug addict set mother-in-law on fire after police 'failed to deal with violent behaviour' One of the images featured a girl with a cut thigh and was captioned: 'I can't tell you how many times I wish I was dead.' Advertisement Advertisement  Mr Russell told the Sunday Times: 'The more I looked, the more there was that chill horror that I was getting a glimpse into something that had such profound effects on my lovely daughter

'Pinterest has a huge amount to answer for.'  The dad, from Harrow, north London, believes Instagram 'helped kill my daughter' after it was revealed she had looked at multiple images which normalised self-harm

One account she followed featured an image of a blindfolded girl hugging a teddy bear with the caption: 'This world is so cruel, and I don't wanna to see it any more.' The teenager showed no obvious signs' of severe mental health issues before being found dead in her bedroom in November 2017 (Picture: PA)He has joined other families calling for a ban on social media sites for allowing young people to be shown images that could impact their mental health

Experts have said that some images on Instagram, which has a minimum joining age of 13, may act as an 'incitement' to self-harm

Blood splatters McDonald's floor after stabbing victim ran inside for help Ian is now calling for tech companies to remove the type of imagery that Molly was looking at before her death

He said: 'It is clear to us that despite what the social media companies tell the public about their policies of removing disturbing content that such content is still available for young people to find easily and by finding it they have more and more of it pushed on them by algorithms

Advertisement Advertisement  'It is time for tech companies to stand up and take more responsibility for the content available to their young users

Pinterest even sent her a personalised email containing more disturbing content the month after her death (Picture: Getty) 'While many may say it is impossible to "police the internet" there must be a better and safer way to control what we expose young people to on the internet and to ensure more support is offered to those looking for answers online

'This is far too important an issue to simply dismiss as being too difficult.  'However, I fear that the tech companies have already shown that they cannot be trusted to police this themselves and that legislation may well be needed.'  Health Secretary Matt Hancock has now written to Internet giants to tell them they have a duty to protect young people who user their sites

In his letter to Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Apple, Google and Facebook, who own Instagram, he said: 'It is appalling how easy it still is to access this content online and I am in no doubt about the harm this material can cause, especially for young people

'It is time for internet and social media providers to step up and purge this content once and for all.' Experts say some images on Instagram, which has a minimum joining age of 13, may act as an 'incitement' to self-harm (Picture: PA) A spokesperson for Instagram said: 'We are undertaking a full review of our enforcement policies and technologies around self-harm, suicide and eating disorders

Advertisement  'As part of this, we are consulting further with mental health bodies and academics to understand what more we can do to protect and support our community, especially young people

'While we undertake this review, we are taking measures aimed at preventing people from finding self harm-related content through search and hashtags.'  An inquest into Molly's death is expected later this year

Autistic Self-determination and Using College Disabilities Offices - Duration: 5:18.

Patrick Dwyer: I'm Patrick Dwyer and I am an autistic graduate student at UC Davis. I do some

autism research here myself. I also facilitate a peer support group

for our autistic students. And right now I am outside the Student Disability

Center at UC Davis. Now all of colleges should have a campus

disability office. This is principally responsible for

coordinating academic accommodations for disability, assistive technology, exam

accommodations, extra time on tests, note-taking, you know all these sorts of things.

It is very much on us to initiate contact with the Student Disability Center if

that is indeed the path that we think is right for us. And on that question of

self-determination, we're about to go in and meet Dr. Joe Spector who is very

much a believer in the importance of the topic of self-determination.

If we're imagining

that, you know, we're a student who was thinking about college and thinking they might want to register

with the Student Disability Center how do they go about doing that?

Joe Spector: Well as you

know I'm a big believer in self-determination which involves

starting out early and navigating through life supporting some of your own efforts.

So, I believe a lot of it starts in high school and at that point the students

are developing skills in advocacy, skills in requesting accommodations,

and developing good patterns for school. I strongly recommend the students take

the lead in that process. So, part of the transition to college involves high school

time because at that point not only are you working through that high school process, but hopefully you're

developing the kinds of documentation that will help you succeed in accessing

services like at a Student Disability Center at the post-secondary level.

Patrick Dwyer: Right.

Joe Spector: So one of the first things I recommend is that the students have up-to-date

documentation, or evaluations, or reports, so that if they choose to come to a

Student Disability Center they have the documentation part ready to go.

Patrick Dwyer: And if somebody is not sure if their documentation is appropriate can

they just approach Student Disability Center and ask?

Joe Spector: I recommend that. On this

particular campus we might call that an inquiry meeting. An inquiry meeting can occur

during high school. In fact, I strongly encourage that, they're really pleasant meetings

that gives the student a chance to speak for themself and to get to know what an office

a disability office is like. But it can also occur the summer before school starts

or even during the course of school.

Patrick Dwyer: What happens once people are are registered

and they're looking to access accommodations?

Can you say anything briefly about that or?

Joe Spector: Students need to interact with the instructors about

where the accommodations will be provided, what time the test will occur,

if there's extra time, how to manage that. Many campuses such as ours don't

have a large developed test center, so the instructor has to work out where the

test will occur. So that connection between the instructor and the student is

especially important. Because for each test there may be a different time and a different location.

Patrick Dwyer: Right, right.

And I'll just take a quick moment to mention that Stairway to STEM STEM website

does have a lot of resources being developed about how to communicate with

instructors so those definitely would be a thing to check out. And then one last

question because, you know, I know a lot of students are more reluctant to

seek out formal accommodations for various different reasons and I'm

wondering if you have any thoughts to people who, you know, that maybe they are not

wanting to disclose their disability, or they don't feel they need accommodations, or

feel guilty about the idea of accommodations.

Joe Spector: One thing I've learned in the

several decades that I've been working with students with the diagnosis of

autism is to respect some of their own beliefs and some of their own

perceptions. There will be those students who generally don't do believe that they

need academic accommodations and in fact some of them probably don't.

So, I've learned to respect that that choice of

when it's time to get the help and when it's not time to get the help. However, reluctance

about coming here shouldn't involve a sense of shame, or stigma, or

embarrassment. At the point that that's going on I think it it helps to reach

out to your friends, your parents, people like you, to help coach them towards

coming to a disability center at least beginning the discussion. And for the

most part the disability centers are very user friendly.

Patrick Dwyer: Thank you for watching

this video I hope that it provided useful and helpful information. And

please do comment if you have any thoughts, reflections, if you have your

own experiences that are relevant, any feedback, whatever it is we do want to hear it

so please do add those comments.

Self Growth of a CNA - Chill Spot on CNA-TV - Duration: 6:30.

Today is January 28.

Welcome to the chill spot.

My name is Drake and as I've mentioned previously last week Karren is out and today

should be the last day she's out so we'll have her back with us on Monday.

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about self growth and interpersonal relationships

with yourself.

And I wanted to give you eight tips today to improve your relationship with you.

The first one is open your mind.

That's a big thing.

I've been focusing on all these eight steps so this is a fun one for me.

Open your mind read you know educate yourself listen listen listen I cannot stress that

enough.

Way too often are we talking and not listening.

If you're talking you're stating something you already know and you're not giving

yourself the opportunity to learn.

Listening is the only time you're going to be able to learn from someone else and be open

to ideas don't get too stuck in your way as of anything.

Sometimes a different way may not be wrong or right or your way not me may not be wrong or

right but it just might be better.

Number two would be forgive yourself.

Be able to move forward and remember that as long as you try your best.

That's all you can do.

Because humans do make mistakes number three.

One of my favorite ones.

Take you time whether that's reading cooking listening to music exercising.

Find a hobby or an activity that you personally like to do.

For me I like to listen to music.

I do find a lot of enjoyment in reading and spending time outdoors when it is warm

enough.

And number four would be a lifestyle check you know just check up on the things that

you're doing in your life are there things that you're doing that are unhealthy for you

unhealthy habits or just unhealthy for your life as a whole that aren't going to help you

grow.

Decide what is working in your life and what is not working in your life.

And a big thing I do reflect at the end of every week or the beginning of a new week

what works last week what are you going to alter.

Just a bit to change to make work for the coming week but you don't want to stay in

these patterns of unhappiness.

Things not working when you can change them moving forward.

Number five this is a good one to build your tribe.

Tribe is in like friends circle.

Surround yourself with like minded people.

People that have the same common goals as you or if you're on the path to positivity let's

say that's where I bet you want to be around positive people being around negative people

it's way too easy to get into those habits and be negative right along with them and

read Self Empowerment books.

I often find myself reading articles and I can't even say just books articles blogs on

people that are going through a self growth period or spiritual journey.

You could say Number Six meditate.

Some people hear the word meditate and it kind of makes them fearful.

You know I don't know how to do that.

I'm gonna do it wrong or what's the right way.

There are several different forms of meditation.

When I started meditating a few years ago I found the best guidance through YouTube.

There are guided meditations and eventually I worked myself into being able to self

meditate without the guide on YouTube so there's no right way to do it.

There's no wrong way to do it what you want to do is meditating.

I mean that's just shutting out the world manifesting things that you want to happen in

life in focusing on you the seventh thing on talk about remap your life you're not a

passenger.

So make sure that you're in control you're making things happen and focus on you.

And then the final thing is big to me.

Create a positive mindset.

Practice positive thinking there.

It's scientifically proven that the brain can easily be retrained.

I shouldn't say easily it can be your brain can be retrained.

I was sitting in some seminars a few years ago and a guy was talking about the power of

positive thinking and I just kept saying to myself like that.

It can't work it doesn't work.

And I was in a bad spot.

And years later that's when I put my focus on you know try to find the positive in every

situation.

It can be a real bad day or a real bad situation but you want to pick out the

positive things that are happening or alter some.

Some of the situational things to be positive but just look for the positives and a big

thing there is everything won't be positive and you will have bad days so continue to

move forward and push through your bad days knowing that coming forward coming soon

tomorrow maybe in a few hours you can be back to your positive self.

So I ask that you share these you know share with your co-workers shared with your

friends.

They don't even have to work in the health care industry because self-love self

empowerment self-improvement is always a good thing and I'm going to do a giveaway.

So dream is a series of images thoughts or emotions going through your mind during sleep

and you know I've always dreamed to do better.

That's what I say and it works.

You dream about it make it happen and manifest it.

So if you share this video I'll go through it and look and see who share the video what

else and this awesome dream coffee cup tea in the mail for helping support CNA TV in the

chill spot.

And we just able to show our gratitude for you.
