Yesterday, the nation's Parliament did not sign off on President Moon's nominee for education

minister, Yoo Eun-hae..., by the time he'd asked them to.

But today the South Korean leader went ahead and appointed her anyway, as he's legally

entitled to do so.

According to the Cheongwadae spokesperson, the President decided she is the right person

for the job.

He believes she was sincere in her confirmation hearing, and that she provided an apology

and explained the allegations against her sufficiently.

Yoo is a former lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Party of Korea and also serves as deputy prime

minister for social affairs.

She had been accused of ethical lapses, including falsely registering her home address to get

her daughter into a better elementary school.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party protested her nomination on those grounds, and prevented

an official report on her confirmation from being adopted.

Netflix Co-founder: Liberal Arts Education Is Key - Duration: 0:48.

I'm a big believer in a liberal arts education because I think it prepares

people for a world which they don't really know what it's gonna be like. For

example, there's things that I got from Hamilton that I use every single day. My

writing; Hamilton really taught me how to write clearly and concisely, how to make

and defend an argument on paper and I can't tell you how useful it is to be a

strong advocate in a written form. Also one of the best courses I took was my

public speaking course here for the same reasons. I need to be able to articulate

my ideas and convince people of things and the lessons I learned back then, now

almost 35 years ago, again, I use almost every day.

Issue of 'hair freedom' resurfaces as Seoul education board lifts hair regulations for.. - Duration: 3:12.

Back in the Joseon Dynasty, men and women were forbidden from cutting their hair, since

it was viewed as a legacy from their parents that must be preserved.

Today,… hair length is still a significant issue in South Korea.

Students in some schools are forbidden from having certain hairstyles.

Won Jung-hwan zooms in on the responses to such rules are being imposed today.

Hair regulations have a long history in Korea.

In the 1970s, President Park Chung-hee's military regime viewed long hair as decadent,… and

associated it with the 'hippie' lifestyle.

There were strict rules regarding school outfits and hair length, and male students were forced

to have a hairstyle similar to that of army conscripts.

The government lifted the rules in 1982, allowing students to grow their hair a bit longer,...

but individual schools continued to impose restrictions,... a practice that still persists

today.

While the debate over whether students' freedom to choose their hairstyle has been going on

for a while, the issue recently surfaced,… as the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Office

of Education, Cho Hee-yeon, advised schools last week to revise regulations by the autumn

semester of 2019.

Cho said that schools in the capital city should scrap the current rigorous policies

that restrict students from growing, coloring or perming their hair.

While more than 84 percent of secondary schools in Seoul did not have hair length limits,…

many schools still ban students from dyeing or perming their hair.

But students from a high school in Seoul that has been allowing students to dye and perm

their hair for the past 3 years,… say it is their right to choose their own hairstyle

and that this freedom is better than being restricted.

"The good thing about this change is that we can style our hair freely without being

conscious of what the teachers might say about it."

"We are quite sensitive to the latest trends, and being free from strict hair regulations

is a great means to express our individualities."

However, supporters of the restrictions contend that longer hair interferes with studying

and could lead students to indulge in bad behavior.

"Of course, I do not mean that students become juvenile delinquents by simply dyeing or perming

their hair,… but we should not forget that,… how you dress or how you style your hair does

influence an individual's attitude."

And according to the spokesperson,… giving students more freedom could weaken teachers'

authority.

"As you know, allowing more freedom in terms of students' rights conflicts with their teacher's

authority and educational guidance.

In such a process,… if we allow more freedom, it could infringe on the teacher's authority

in class."

"The controversial issue of freedom for young students to choose their own hairstyle has

once again become a hot issue in South Korea,… and it seems that it will remain contentious

for some time to come.

Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News."

Adobe Spark Page for Education - Duration: 15:13.

This is patti depriest and welcome back to educate academy brought to you by the kentucky academy of technology education

Today, we're going to take a look at Adobe spark

Adobe spark is free for education

There are three different parts to Adobe spark. There is spark post where you can create graphics and

Memes and things like that

there's spark video where you can actually do videos and put those together and

Then there's spark page which creates a an online like magazine or a website

Today we're going to focus mostly on spark page

But well initially we're going to talk a little bit more about what Adobe spark is and how to get it into your school on

This page and I will share that with you

Adobe will tell you how to set up your account or Adobe spark

They mentioned that if you already have Adobe products that you can add

Spark to the Adobe admin console. They also have a guide to getting started

This is really important because when you go to log your students in for it to be Copa compliant

It does need to be managed by your school

And when your students log in and create an account, they are going to initially create an Adobe account

And then they can actually use their Google or your office 365 email

But they're not going to actually create it initially with their Google or office 365 email account

All right. So what is spark and this is the page where you actually go into spark? This is my account and

When you're on here, if I go to the plus I can create a new post page or video

Notice that I have a few posts that I've created on here. I don't have any videos

I don't think I've done some but I think I did them on my

IPad if we want to look this is a post that I've created it is on

Yellowstone, and I just picked a

Way that I wanted to do the layout and I put the pick the pictures you can add

pictures and I chose photos and

You can upload a photo but you can all so find free photos and this is really nice

It pulls them from a lot of different free sites that are Creative Commons

Licensed for your students to use so it's really great

You can also add, you know, text and icons and logos and things like that

once you're done

You can share it out. And then you can also download it in order to bring it into spark page

You do need to download it and then upload it into Page

Hopefully they're working on that because it seems like they should you should be able to pull those in a lot easier

anyway, that is post go back by clicking on the icon here and

I'm going to show you this is a

project that I did for and

Adobe class I took on Adobe spark page and

So what what pages is it allows you pull in

Images videos add text and all and so this is the page that I created on

Destinations for a bucket list and so if you notice that I've put some headed headers in there are headlines

And I've got some text now. I've got some pictures. This is something that I created in Adobe spark post and

Then I've got more stuff here. And again just a picture

This is a different way to put in a picture where it goes all the way across and you scroll through it

notice it also has a little

Byline there or talks about the actual picture and then goes into Indonesia

Another one of those pictures and so on and so on so you get an idea of what this looks like going back

to the smart page

Just as I mentioned

To get to the website, I don't think I did mention that go to sparf adobe.com

/edu

Again, make sure that you set up that adobe admin console where your school is managing and controlling

the access to adobe spark

All the premium features that used to have to pay for are free for education

And so you can pretty much do anything that you can do in adobe spark for free with your students

So just one new we're going to click the plus sign and we're going to go to page

and so the first thing that's going to do is ask you to add a title know one of the neat things that

Spark has done is that teachers used to complain that with some of the products that the students would spend all day?

Looking at fonts and trying them out and all these different things

So they really limit you when you pick a theme you get the fonts that come with a theme

There's no other way to change those fonts. So we're gonna add a title and this is going to be on

Yellowstone National

Park

Alright so when I click off of that I can add a photo so I'm going to click on the photo

I'm going to go to fine fine free photos. I'm gonna type in Yellowstone

Alright, so a couple of these you may recognize from my other picture that I had that was one on here that I really liked

this one

That yeah, that's what I need. Okay

alright, so I'm gonna go down to this button and

I've got options I can add a photo I can add text I can add a button and this is how you add a

Hyperlink, I can have video from YouTube

I can put in a photo grid and I can have a glide show and we'll look at all of these

So first we're going to add text and it's going to be a headline. And so I am going to type in

And

Once I've done that I can format this text and so I can make it centered

Notice I can make it into a quote. I've got headline 1 or headline - I've chosen one. It was just a bigger one

I can add in bullet points numbers

you can make it up here at the top are your themes and so all of this is going to set my

Look as to what everything is gonna look like so I am going to let's try this vintage

Mmm, I don't like what I did to my picture and so I'm going to choose something else

This let's leave it at that for now

And again I come down here. Alright so underneath I am going to add some other text

And click here

This I'm going to make a quote and I'm gonna paste it in and

This is coming from a website from the National Park Service. And so

It is a quote now. I'm going to add again and

This time we're going to add a photo and we're going to add

Like this picture of the bison, so we're going to add this in

Notice you cut different ways to add the picture you can do it in line, which is what it is right now

And I could also fill the screen

I can do a window which is that kind of neat thing that you saw earlier I can do full width

We're just gonna make it a pretty big picture

and

So this moves it where it is located so it would have put it above where I had my quote

I'm gonna do the window so you can see it. And so now as I scroll it's going to scroll past that picture

I really like that effect

Notice, I have a caption that I can add

now see that's part of my

Theme and I don't really like the red behind it, but we're gonna leave it there

Alright now we can go back and change it later

Okay, so we're going to add some more text and

This is going to be a another headline this is going to be things to do and

Then under that we're going to add more text and it's going to be just plain. So I'm going to paste that in and

Then I'm going to go and add a video. So I'm going to click on the video button and

Copy a video that I have on another screen and I'm gonna paste this in here

And I'm gonna click Save and it adds it in. So this is five must-see attractions that you must do

You can see how easy it is to keep adding things on and so let's go and well gonna add a little bit more text

So I'm going to click here and I'm going to add the text and add see how this works with that headline

so once I added the

Headline this is the smaller of the two headlines

Let's add a photo grid and so I can add different photos to add to my grid

so let's add the

So the more pictures that I add it's going to change that grid what its gonna look like

Some of the things I'm not sure are Yellowstone so

There is a there we go. Okay, so that's my photo grid now I can move those around I believe

so I've got my little arrows here and so I can

move these if I've got the three scenes and the

Three things of wildlife if I want to change something I can click here and I can replace it

And I can say okay I want

Buffalo and so on. Oh one of my pictures disappeared that

Bear

Let's move this one over here

And so we've got some wildlife and we've got some scenery. All right, once we get it done see it says edit grid

It's really not liking that extra picture is it

I'll add this in

This is gonna redo my grid which I really like the way that it does those kinds of things

Yeah, not sure. That's actually that was done but we're gonna leave that there anyway

So I'm gonna click here and click Save and it adds that

experience then to

You see how easy it is. I've added all this stuff. It looks awesome. And

I can keep adding information. This is a great way for your students to

create and

turn in something that's a report, but yet they're

Putting it in a format that is just very very impressive

On here the things that we haven't added we haven't added a button. So let's go ahead and add that

National Park Service go back to their

Home for Yellowstone, so I'm gonna copy that and

So my button text is gonna say Yellowstone

and

We will paste that underneath

Notice my alignment I can make it left right or Center. Let's make it Center

And so that's going to be a button that people can press to get information

Okay, so underneath here we are going to put a

Let's put some text and said this time we're going to put just regular text

Okay, so we've got notice it's separated into each paragraph and it's got the ability to add pictures or whatever in between and

So now we're going to add another picture. We did the photo grid. So let's do the glide show and

So I'm gonna put Yellowstone hiking

If it'll come up with anything

But we can add some things here so that you can actually see what it's going to look like

As I said, I don't know that all of these are actually Yellowstone

Now if I don't like that picture I can come in here and delete it

I'm going to go ahead and you can you know, add and remove these pictures

I'm going to click Save so you can see what it does with it

And it may not save until it gets them all loaded

Okay, so

Notice as I scroll through here it's going from one picture to the next to the next

notice on each one of those that I can add a

Caption to it

again, I just this program just amazes me and how easy it is to use and how much you can do with it in so

Little time. So now we can go up to the preview button and it's going to show me

What its gonna look like notice that I didn't put in a subtitle so it took that out in the preview

I'm going to scroll down. I

Can actually watch the video

And I can close that

Scroll down I see my grid I can click here and it's going to open up the National Park Service site

Read some more and then I can scroll through these different pictures

Very impressive

Ok, so to get out of this I'm going to close that

back into the editing mode

Under share. This is how you would share your link with somebody else. And so I've got my title

I can pick a category where it goes

I have my officer name on here and whether or not I want to show that when I share this

I've got the photo credits for every picture that I pulled in as or added automatically and then I can create the link. I

Have to pick a category

Ok, so we're going to say education

once I've got that category picked, I'm going to create the link and

I can copy it. I can also post this to Facebook Twitter

I can email it something to someone or I can get the embed code that I can embed into another website

Or some other projects that will accept the embed code. So you've got all the different things will copy this here

and so if I was to come over here and paste this in

It's going to go ahead and load the actual version so that's it that really is all you need to do

So if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. My email is Petey priest. That's P de

PR iest at

Murray State edu. Thanks for watching and I'll see you online

Spotlight - Gerner Family Early Education Center - Duration: 6:13.

- Welcome to this edition of "Spotlight."

We are at the Gerner Family Early Education Center

with Coordinator Rachel Ward.

Rachel, dozens of students in our district

learn and communicate more effectively,

thanks to assistive technology.

And that includes students here at the Gerner Center,

and that is really a crucial part

of ensuring all of our students succeed.

- Absolutely.

I'm very excited for this "Spotlight" to highlight

our use of assistive technology and allowing

all students to have a voice in the learning process.

We have a wonderful staff here at the building

to be able to support our students

as they learn and grow, academically,

as well as in their practical life application,

and many of our students that utilize devices

are able to grow and develop in incredible ways.

- Well, in honor of

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Month,

why not let some awesome Gerner students,

along with our teachers and parents, show and tell us

how they're learning to join the conversation

as we highlight the Gerner Family Early Education Center.

(gentle music)

- The AAC stands for Augmentative Alternative Communication.

And so, it's a way for our kids to become more independent

in their communication skills. And so

even though they may be at that one- to two-word level,

or maybe their speech is so unintelligible

that you can't understand what they're saying,

this is a way for them to use communication

at a higher level, that they're capable of doing it,

and make it functional for us, for them to communicate

with us, at school, at home, in the community.

- When you give a student a device,

you can't just expect them to automatically

know how to communicate right from the beginning.

They have to be taught, and they have to be taught

the social aspect of it, how to use it

interactively with other people, and they have to

be taught the vocabulary that's in the system.

And one of the ways to do that

is just by modeling, all of the time,

the words that you're using, the words that they're doing.

- Mealtimes is really his favorite time to use it,

because he can get exactly what he wants.

And since we've had the talker, it's actually cut down

a lot on tantrums and behavior issues, because he's able

to communicate those needs, which is great.

- We've always had really structured times

during the day when, it's kind of been,

I guess, you could say easy to implement the device.

So, times like snack, or work time.

It's kind of easy to put that vocabulary

into what they're doing,

but now that we're able to do it during

large group instruction, we're able to do it during

gathering time, where the vocabulary is always changing.

They're always learning new concepts.

They're able to learn it during music time,

where there's all kinds of words that they're learning,

so it just broadens that vocabulary

and gives them even more exposure to

words that they weren't even seeing before.

- She can't talk. She says zero words,

so this gives her the platform to be able to say anything.

And at first, it was not as specific.

It was kind of just learning it,

so she would list all the state capitals in order

and then play them all through, which is funny,

but then she started with things that she wanted,

and that developed to, you know, she would start to

talk about her feelings, which was different.

So, it's more in depth, and then she's more willing

to just, I mean, do it willingly.

She'll come up and just say, you know, "I'm hungry."

- One of the biggest misconceptions out there

about assistive technology is that

the kids will learn to rely on that,

as opposed to their own voice,

and they'll stop wanting to learn to speak,

and we've actually seen the opposite is true.

It's almost like when you unlock that power

that they know that if they communicate,

they can get what they want.

They can express their own personality.

- They're just picking up these things that, from modeling,

that we're also not discreetly teaching them.

So, I've seen kids who've busted out sentences

that you're like, "I've never taught them how to use that,"

and they're using it correctly,

with correct grammar, correct punctuation.

They're using it in the correct setting,

so it's really cool to see how they move from something

that's very specific, and you're doing it

in a very structured setting, to, then eventually

being able to just use it spontaneously.

- He will use his talker to say something,

and then he'll try to say the word.

Or, he'll try to say something,

and then he'll go to his talker to kind of confirm.

So, it's really encouraged him to help take risks,

whereas before he didn't want to try

saying words, because he knew,

"They're not going to understand me."

- It's amazing. It's amazing.

I mean, it's not her voice, but it's her voice, and it's ...

(exhales)

I can tell that she's, sorry.

She's less frustrated,

because she can use that to talk to me,

and it's just been the best thing

for my husband and me to, you know, to have that for her,

for her to be able to, you know,

it helps in every single aspect.

- She can build a sentence like no other,

and she understands the concepts

of how language goes together, to make longer utterances,

and it's just amazing to think

where she's gonna be in five, 10 years.

She's going to be literate. she's going to be reading.

She's going to be writing. She's going to be

an effective communicator for life

because of the things that have been established here.

- We moved here from Texas to be in Park Hill

so that she could go to Gerner,

because it's supposed to be one of the best,

you know, school districts in the nation.

- I'm going to cry, because it's so cool,

but there's so many different levels, where the kids are,

but we have kids leaving here that are reading,

that can put things together that are grammatically correct,

and that's like a, you know, I mean,

that's a kindergarten to first-grade kind of skills.

- Gerner is amazing.

I can't say enough nice things about them.

They are, kind of, the number one cheerleaders

when it comes to using his talker, using his device.

You know, Ms. Nelson just supports him all the way.

You can see in the classroom. It's always supported.

It's always integrated.

And they've just kind of been our number one advocates.

(gentle music)

I actually started off as a business student and I moved into engineering

It was something that I really wanted to do with my life

Baja's it was a great fit for that because I was able to take the skills that I learned in my classes and actually

Apply them to a real-world situation.

Initially I had planned on doing electrical engineering and through the intro to engineering course

I was able to find a better home in product design

through Baja

I've been able to make scans of our teammates that are very accurate and we've moved those scans into

avatars through our design

Program we've been able to use that program

to analyze the comfort of our vehicle so that we can know exactly

how comfortable our chassis is, before we even order any tubes or

Put a driver in.

I've spent four years with the team and I've been able to develop leadership skills

project management, sponsor relations.

I've learned about hydraulic circuits designing vehicle chassis

about engines anything engineering related.

Thank you for your donations that have made this program a possibility.

without you we wouldn't be able to do these kind of things

and actually learn very valuable engineering skills through the product design program

I've been able to develop my skills so that I have the ability to make real-world

products that help to enrich other people's lives

It feels really good that the experience that I put in here has helped me to land a job

It's not a lot of opportunities to actually do something that you love and that you're passionate about and have that directly relate to

the number one impact on our producers is as we provide them jobs, so that they

can remain at the village with their family and they can earn money so

they can have the self-reliance and dignity. Another important impact on them

is through our capacity building training we give them product

development training, then good governance, leadership training and

bookkeeping training. Actually with this capacity building training they became

good leaders, good workers. We also provide them trainings on some daily

life issues. We call them 'awareness building program' such as domestic

violence, human trafficking and child labor. In Bangladesh most of the rural

women don't know about their rights so we want to make them aware about their

human rights to raise their voice in the society and in their family. We want

our artisans to be healthy, that's why we also organize some trainings for

nutrition, for immunization, for breastfeeding, safe drinking water

and sanitation.
