UNESCO urges Japan to let world know of Hashima Island's brutal history - Duration: 1:58.

In other news...

Japan's Hashima Island is where hundreds of Koreans workers were forced to toil in coal

mines.

While Tokyo has failed to implement its promise to let the world know of the island's brutal

history,...

UNESCO urged Japan to inform the world and seek dialogue with South Korea regarding the

matter.

Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.

UNESCO has urged Japan to tell the world about the brutality committed against the forced

laborers of Korea who worked on Japan's Hashima Island during its colonial rule of the Korean

Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

The decision came at UNESCO's 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee on Wednesday,...

during which the international body reviewed the follow-up measures promised by Japan when

its 23 industrial facilities including those on Hashima Island, which is located off the

coast of Nagasaki in southern Japan, were registered as World Cultural Heritage sites

back in 2015.

Tokyo promised to inform the world about the dark side of Hashima's history.

Yet, the fortress-like island which attracts thousands of visitors annually,... is only

introduced as a coal mine that was opened in the 1940s.

And breaking the promise it made to UNESCO,... Japan dropped the word "forced" when referring

to those who worked on the island, falsely saying that Koreans provided "voluntary help."

UNESCO called for the faithful implementation of its recommendations,... while urging Japan

and South Korea to engage in dialogue on the issue.

Seoul's foreign ministry called such decision "meaningful,"... adding it will continue to

seek dialogue with Tokyo as well as the international community.

The South Korean government's report says about 500 to 800 Koreans are estimated to

have been forced to work under harsh conditions on the island,... and over one-hundred died

from malnutrition or accidents.

LOVE or LOST in Translation? Ask foreigner in Japan about language barriers when dating Japanese - Duration: 7:07.

- What are you looking for? - Coca-cola coffee plus.

How do you overcome the language barrier?

Google Translate.

She was just like, I don't understand what you are saying either so...

Hey guys, it's Cathy Cat!

Lost in Translation is a famous movie about Japan

and this time we are actually gonna go on the streets of Tokyo

and ask foreigners who have come to Japan

if they are experiencing or have had the "lost in translation"- moment

when they're here.

So that's gonna be quite interesting!

If you're new to Ask Japanese don't forget to subscribe before we start on the video.

Would be lovely to have you on the team.

So let's go and ask foreigners in Japan.

What do you think is a moment or whenever did you get the moment of being lost in translation?

I don't know. I feel like just any time I've tried to buy something at a shop or

order something...

I...

Just, when we tried to order a chicken karaage

and I had to just count with my fingers

and do a lot of pointing and...

we did get our points across, but...

Yeah, it feels very weird to not be in a place where you don't understand the language at all.

So, yeah.

Nothing particularly exciting

but just in general lots of gesturing and pointing at things

and just apologizing for not understanding anything, which is why I know

"wakarimasen" and "sumimasen", so I can apologize and say I don't understand things.

It's good words to know when you're like don't, don't... Yeah, not able to communicate.

Yeah.

Oh yeah, I've got a good one!

Last night I was like walking around Shibuya. Like, almost midnight.

And I was going from vending machine to vending machine

looking for very specific like, Coca Cola flavor.

And I was like, this would never happen anywhere else.

And this was like

I was just like, LOST!

Like, looking...

- Oh, so you literally got lost! - Literally, yes.

There was that translation. Oh man, like Lost in Translation, were I was like wandering around like...

Getting lost.

Getting lost yeah, yeah...

But also like, I was looking for one specific thing.

And I couldn't found it anywhere else.

Did you find it in the end?

No I didn't. So I'm still looking for it today.

- What are you looking for? - Coca-cola coffee plus.

You have seen that?

Does that still exist? I don't know.

-No, I saw it yesterday! -Oh, you did!

But the vending machine that I saw it at doesn't have it anymore. Like, (since) last night.

So... So I'm going to have to keep looking for that, yeah.

Yeah, don't give up the hunt!

I think the director has like maybe a hint where it's like, where you can get it.

Okay, it will have, yeah.

Because vending machines are usually colored by which brand they sell, so they don't mix it.

So look for the red vending machines, and you might be lucky.

Good luck with finding the special Cola you are looking for!

Thank you. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

I'm definitely excited

So you guys

are going out with each other.

have you ever had a moment when in the relationship, you were lost in translation?

It was hard to express what he wanted to say.

Still now. Because...

His English isn't that good in my Japanese is awful, so...

It's really difficult to talk about something in depth, about problems that we're having...

Definitely.

But we find our own way to communicate, you know.

How do you overcome the language barrier?

Google Translate.

When we like, battle (conversation-wise) she's really speaking fast, so...

Sometimes uh, I can't understand. So I just say sorry, sorry, sorry!

Yeah. I think when, when ladies get angry, we talk quicker and louder.

And it's like frustrating when you can't understand.

I just want to say everything.

It's definitely a big barrier, but...

We still manage to work around it anyway.

So the point is to then try other means of communicating. Google Translate, anything else?

I don't know. Kind of like using examples, like imagine if you were me or something

Yeah, because of the... I guess the cultural differences.

I don't know, just be like...

Imagine if you would be in this situation...?

I think we're having a Lost in Translation- moment right now!

I'm just trying to think.

Keep at it, stay strong!

Thank you!

And lots of studying each other's languages!

Yeah, definitely!

You learn Japanese so you might not get this as much, but when you came here the first time

I'm sure there was a moment when you were "lost in translation".

I had uhm...

One time when I went to the post office

I actually, thought that my Japanese was pretty good at that point when I was talking to her.

But she couldn't understand what I was saying so that was really frustrating, and yeah...

I tried over and over again

but just, she just kept looking at my other friend who looks Japanese, but isn't

and she was just like, I don't understand what you are saying either so...

Yeah, that was...

lost in translation, I guess...

I had that! I tried to send parcels to my family in Germany with cookies.

And after baking the cookies, right on the next day, wanted to get them there

they arrived three months later!

Yes, yeah...

Good, those were all the questions. Thank you!

Lost in translation moments.

I had a lot here in Japan

and one of the most embarrassing ones was

usually when we're on the streets and we're filming for Ask Japanese

and I go up to people in Japanese and go like

"excuse me, we're doing an interview, could you please take part"?

I used to say...

mats.. u... kado interview...?

Machukado interview.

Which means in Japanese...

Oh like, the lock screen on your phone...?

So I was constantly saying, I'm doing a lock screen interview...?

For two years, I said I'm doing a lock screen interview.

You know, from your phone, the lock screen.

I instead of using the word "machikado interview".

I used... No, "machiuke interview"...

Now which one is the right one now. I'm so confused!

Machikado interview, is the right one...

Yeah, I said machuke- interview.

Which pretty much means it's the "lock screen of your phone interview".

Ah! I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Yeah, I constantly got that wrong!

But the director of Ask Japanese didn't correct it

because he couldn't hear me because I was going out into the crowd

so only after we started having this fancy microphone

that actually has a cable so I can actually walk away

he realized when I was saying to the people and he...

He ah... He corrected the wrong word that I had used for almost a year and a half, two years without knowing.

So that was pretty bad for me...

So that was a very big lost in translation-moment.

I surprised we managed to get people to do an interview with us

with me, constantly saying the wrong word.

And that's something now.

Anyways! That was my lost in translation- moment

let me know about your lost in translation moment!

Leave us a message and don't forget to subscribe if you're new to our channel

would be nice to have you on the Ask Japanese Team.

Catch you soon, and bye!

Is Japan colonising an ASTEROID? Space agency to land probe 180million miles away - Duration: 5:25.

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has sent a probe millions of miles into space to attempt to land on the space rock dubbed "Ryugu"

The Hayabusa2 ship is expected to reach the asteroid today.  And now conspiracists believe they are testing to see whether inhabiting the rock in the future is a possibility

One channel, , uploaded a video questioning whether the Japanese are hiding the truth

Tyler Glockner, who runs the page, speculated that the space experts are up to something bigger than they're letting off

Since he uploaded the clip earlier today, it has already racked up more than 62,000 hits

And viewers were quick to add their own opinions. "It doesn't look natural at all," one viewer claimed

Before another added: "They will probably try to colonise it." And a third stated: "The Japanese are up to something

" Top Facts About Asteroids Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun

The first asteroid was Ceres, discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801. There are currently over 600,000 known asteroids in our solar system

Most asteroids are found orbiting in the Asteroid Belt, a series of rings located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter

1 / 10 Getty Images There are Millions of Asteroids in the solar system, usually found in the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, however those in that pass the Earth are called Near-Earth objects  Hayabusa2 left Earth on December 3, 2014, to study the asteroid as scientists believe it may contain trace amounts of primordial water and organic matter from the birth of our solar system

Should these be found, it could help to answer questions about how life started on Earth

Despite originally appearing round, Ryugu was found to be diamond-shaped. Mission principal investigator Seiji Sugita said in a statement on Friday that their predictions on its structure have changed over time

EPIC apocalyptic asteroid impact craters Conspiracy theorists claim the Earth is due a direct hit with an asteroid

Here's some extraordinary impact craters caused by alien objects 1 / 14 Getty Images Eastern Russia's Lake El'gygytgyn, which sits inside a small asteroid impact crater  He said: "As we approached Ryugu and were able to distinguish individual features in the asteroid's topology, it became clear that Ryugu has a land of rich terrain

"Numerous clusters of rock roll on the surface. Among these, a large rocky mass (about 150 meters [490 feet] across) stands out on the upper part of Ryugu due to its brighter colour

"The belt-shaped ring of peaks that surround the equator are also slightly brighter than their surroundings

"This colour difference may reflect a difference in material composition and the size of the particles that form the rock

"We can also see many sunken regions that look like craters. These depressions may have been made in collisions with other celestial bodies

A structure that looks like a grove is also visible."

People who don't have children are 'selfish', says senior Japanese politician - Duration: 4:05.

A leading Japanese politician has criticised people who do not have children as being "selfish", the latest in a string of controversial parenting remarks by senior figures from the ruling party

Toshihiro Nikai, the secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, made his comments during a speech in Tokyo, during which he also urged the nation to have more children in order to make everyone "happy"

"During and after the war when (Japanese people) were living on the edge of starvation, nobody said it's better not to have children because it would be too much trouble," said Mr Nikai, 79

"These days, some people have a selfish idea that it is better not to give birth to children

"  He added: "In order for everyone (in Japan) to be happy, we should have many children and develop our country

"  The Japanese government is currently contending with a record low birthrate, with around 941,000 children born last year – the lowest figure since nationwide records began in 1899

However, Mr Nikai's comments are likely to ignite concerns that the ruling elite are starkly out of touch with the realities of daily life in Japan, where mothers struggle to juggle careers with parenting while facing chronic shortages of childcare places and widespread gender discrimination in the workplace

Meanwhile, only three per cent of Japanese men take paternity leave following the birth of a child, with many workers fearful about the impact on their career if they take their legally entitled break

The extent of the nation's childcare problem was reflected in a recent survey by the think tank Nomura Research Institute, which found that 348,000 children nationwide were unable to enroll in Japan's limited number of facilities

An additional 599,000 children needed to obtain places – nearly twice the government's target of 320,000 for 2020 – if the employment rate of women aged between 25 and 44 was boosted to its goal of 80 percent in 2022, compared to 66 per cent in 2009, the report added

Mr Nikai, whose comments were reported by Kyodo news agency, is not the only senior LDP figure to spark controversy in recent months due to outdated views of family life in modern-day Japan

Last month, Koichi Hagiuda, the executive acting secretary-general of LDP – and a close aide to the prime minister Shinzo Abe - caused a stir when he declared that children under the age of two should be raised by women not men

The veteran politician said during a speech in Miyazaki, southern Japan, that the idea of men raising young children was an "unwelcome idea", adding that infants "must want mums, no matter how you look at it

I think it is a bit strange if they chose dads".  Just weeks earlier, Kanji Kato, a lower house member of LDP, also came under fire after saying that single women were a "burden on the state" and declared that newly-weds should have "at least three children"

Japan space explorer arrives at asteroid – 170 million miles from Earth - Duration: 5:25.

A Japanese space explorer has arrived at an asteroid after a three-and-a-half-year journey and now begins its real work of trying to blow a crater to collect samples to eventually bring back to Earth

The unmanned Hayabusa2 spacecraft reached its base of operations about 12 miles from the asteroid and some 170 million miles from Earth, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said

Over the next year and a half, the spacecraft will attempt three brief touch-and-go landings to collect samples

If the retrieval and the return journey are successful, the asteroid material could provide clues to the origin of the solar system and life on Earth

The robotic explorer will spend about two months looking for suitable landing places on the uneven surface

Due to the high surface temperature, it will stay for only a few seconds each time it lands

The asteroid, named Ryugu after an undersea palace in a Japanese folktale, is about 900m (3,000ft) in diameter

In photos released by JAXA, the Japanese space agency, it appears more cube-shaped than round

A number of large craters can be seen, which Project Manager Yuichi Tsuda said in an online post makes the selection of landing points "both interesting and difficult

"  The first touchdown is planned for September or October.  Before the final touchdown scheduled for April-May, Hayabusa2 will send out a squat cylinder that will detonate above the asteroid, shooting a 2kg copper projectile into it at high speed to make a crater

Hayabusa2 will hide on the other side of the asteroid to protect itself during the operation and wait another two to three weeks to make sure any debris that could damage the explorer has cleared

It will then attempt to land at or near the crater to collect underground material that was blown out of the crater, in addition to the surface material from the earlier touchdowns

The spacecraft will also deploy three rovers that do not have wheels but can hop around on the surface of the asteroid to conduct probes

Hayabusa2 will also send a French-German-made lander to study the surface with four observation devices

Asteroids, which orbit the sun but are much smaller than planets, are among the oldest objects in the solar system

As such, they may help explain how Earth evolved, including the formation of oceans and the start of life

Hayabusa2 was launched in December 2014 and is due to return to Earth at the end of 2020

An earlier Hayabusa mission from 2003 to 2010 collected samples from a different type of asteroid and took three years longer than planned after a series of technical glitches, including a fuel leak and a loss of contact for seven weeks

Nasa also has an ongoing asteroid mission. Its Osiris-Rex spacecraft is expected to reach the asteroid Bennu later this year and return with samples in 2023

REVIEW OF ONE OF JAPAN'S BEST FISHING STORES- THE POINT - Duration: 14:35.

Hello everyone.

Welcome to my channel.

Today I want to take you on a tour to one of my favorite fishing stores here in Japan.

50 miles south of Tokyo is a city called Yokosuka.

This city is known for Japan's rich naval history.

In fact, the famous kaigun (Navy) curry is advertised in this city.

Given the fact that Yokosuka lines the ocean side explains the reason why the area is just constantly packed

with Japanese anglers.

Here in Yokosuka, you will find a lot of fishing shops.

One of my favorites is called "THE POINT."

And in this video, I will give you a tour of this amazing fishing store which is a fisherman's

paradise.

Ohayo gozaimasu.

We walking up to the point which is a fishing store.

This is live bait.

What are those?

Does that look centipedes are something?

It looks like it. Yeah.

This is a very unique bait.

What is that?

They dropped the price.

They have small crabs.

Oh. There are small crabs in there.

More of the bait.

This is frozen.

This is the bait shop.

This place is huge.

This looks like fish food.

And these are coolers.

A little pricey.

13,392 is about less than 133 dollars.

This is bait.

They have octopus. They have squid here.

Some more squid.

And they have shrimp.

And they have cut bait fish.

Then I am not sure if those are...

Those are shrimp.

Shrimp here.

They have a lot of bait here.

This is the variety of reels they have.

It is overwhelming.

This is the kind of special reels that they have.

Shimano is a very good brand.

Shimano.

These are not bad looking reels.

So you can see there is a bunch of Shimano here.

Many varieties of them.

There are some big ones.

This is Diawa.

Diawa is a good reel.

There is some bait casting reels.

There are some more Shimano reels.

45 dollars.

And that is. There are varieties of them.

These are the different kind of line that they have.

They have Avani Sea bass, Pitbull made by Shimano.

Some of these I have never even seen.

And then Rapala.

Very good line.

And the armored pro.

Wow.

And Hardcore.

And there are many varieties of them.

Varieties of fishing line.

These are the varieties of hooks that they have.

They just have rows and rows of different hooks.

There are some green ones I have never seen before.

This is very unlike the U.S.

There are some pink hooks.

Just a variety of hooks.

We are only on lane 1.

And on this aisle, you have a bunch of floats.

Varieties of them.

And this what they look like.

They have a ton of floats.

Then they have some bigger floats here.

Torpedo like floats.

I have actually seen these.

I have seen Japanese people fishing with these.

And these look like they glow.

They glow at night.

Here are some more hooks.

There's rows and rows of hooks.

There's treble hooks.

Look how small these hooks are.

And they call these sabaki hooks.

They have hooks with like feathers for example like that right there.

That's what we saw earlier.

They are in one of the aisles.

You see how they attract fish under the water.

Those ones here.

And there's some unique rigs.

And that is pretty much what this.

Here is some of the bait.

Flash j curly.

When it goes through the water it flashes.

And these are actually weights.

Slide head.

Very unique.

I have never seen these in the states.

Here is one.

These are really really expensive too.

About, a little less than 8 dollars in the states or in the U.S.

U.S. dollar wise.

There's some more.

There are some unique baits.

And here are some more.

Certain weights, bright colors.

These are sinkers actually.

These are pretty big.

They have normal ones.

And you have your small sinkers and big sinkers.

And you have all kinds of beads.

All this attracts fish.

And they have swivels.

And lights.

And on this aisle you have different kinds of floats that you can insert bait into.

And you can see the reason why they have holes in them.

And they attract fish by some kind of bait.

And so these are very unique.

And here's some even big ones for deep sea fishing.

You can see how you could insert some shrimp in there and attract some fish.

Very neat.

And here we have some baits.

Some octopus.

And we have some shrimp, and crab.

Very unique baits.

Look at the size of this crab.

And you have some crab there.

Very cool looking baits here.

You have salt line.

And you have more lures.

Squid or shrimp.

And here you have all kinds of

These are jerk bait.

Very unique.

Frilled swimmer.

Made in Chiba, Japan.

We are not too far from Chiba.

These are a little pricey.

You will pay 11 dollars for this.

Even this right here, about 15 dollars.

And these are yo-zuri lures.

This right here is very unique.

This is shrimp.

And here are some more lures.

This right here looks like it might be very effective.

And this just keeps going and going.

Here is one made by Shimano.

These are different colors

Uniquely designed.

And there are some more.

And there is some of the bigger lures.

See that one is really big.

And as I go down here, here's some like... They're plastic lures, but they have a metal head.

These are very effective.

And then they have a lot of artificial bait here.

Power shads.

And then here you have the fish grips.

You can just grab the fish.

These are very unique

So I am outside the Point.

It was an amazing experience.

They have a large variety of fishing equipment and even live bait here.

This is here in Yokosuka, Japan.

This is where the parking lot is.

It's free parking.

Amazing.

So if you are out in Japan definitely try the Point here in Yokosuka.

Thank you for watching this video.

Japan's Princess Ayako to marry a COMMONER and renounce royal status - Duration: 11:17.

Japan's Princess Ayako has announced she is to marry a commoner in a move that will mean giving up her royal status

The 27-year-old will marry Kei Moriya, a 32-year-old employee of shipping firm NYK Line, at Tokyo's Meiji Jingu shrine on October 29, according to Japan's Imperial Household Agency

Princess Ayako, daughter of the late Prince Takamodo, a cousin of Emperor Akihito, becomes the second Japanese princess in under two years to announce she is marrying a commoner

In September last year, Princess Mako, Emperor Akihito's oldest grandchild, and her college classmate Kei Komuro announced their engagement

Female members of the Imperial family have no claim to the Chrysanthemum Throne

As with all women in her family, the princesses will lose their royal status upon marriage to commoners  - a law that does not apply to male members of the family

Ayako met Moriya, who has a master's degree in social welfare and now works for the shipping firm NYK Line, under a year ago having been introduced to him by her mother Princess Takamodo in December, the Imperial Household revealed

Brexit comes a step closer as Speaker John Bercow announces. Unseen images of The Beatles filming a promo for Penny Lane

Share this article Share According to CNN, she will have to leave the royal family after exchanging vows - but will receive a bonus payment in the region of a million US dollars

Unlike her cousin Mako, Ayako is not a direct descendent of Emperor Akihito, who is planning to abdicate next year

Mako announced plans to engage one for the Imperial Household Agency to reveal in February that the wedding, originally set for November, would be delayed until 2020, citing lack of time for preparations  Japanese monarchy: A man's world  Female members of the Imperial family have no claim to the Chrysanthemum Throne

As with all women in her family, Princess Mako will lose her royal status upon marriage to a commoner

This law does not apply to male royals. But few of Emperor Akihito's children and grandchildren are male, which means there is a shortage of heirs to the throne

Akihito will be succeeded by his eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito. When Naruhito, who has a daughter but no sons, ascends the throne, his younger brother Akishino will be next in line, followed by Hisahito, Akishino's 10-year-old son

Akihito's three other grandchildren are all women so after Hisahito, the only person left in the line of succession is Princess Mako's younger brother

After that there are no more eligible males, meaning the centuries-old succession would be broken if the young heirs do not have any sons of their own

So far the monarchy has an unbroken 2,600-year-long line of male succession. Those who are concerned about the future of the royal family want to allow women to succeed the throne and others to keep their royal status so they can keep performing public duties - but a government panel on the emperor's abdication avoided the divisive issue

Traditionalists, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, strenuously oppose such changes, even though Japan has occasionally been ruled by female sovereigns in past centuries

At the time, the media quoted Mako as saying in a statement that the couple decided to postpone the wedding until after the emperor's abdication

The sudden announcement triggered speculation that the postponement may be linked to tabloid bashing on Komuro's family background

The status of the emperor is sensitive in Japan - a legacy of the massive Pacific war waged in the name of Akihito's father Hirohito, who died in 1989

Akihito has keenly embraced the more modern role as a symbol of the state which was imposed on the royal family after World War II ended

Previous emperors including Hirohito had been treated as semi-divine.But the reigning emperor shocked the country in 2016 when he signalled his desire to end his public duties, citing his age and health problems

Akihito will be the first emperor to retire in more than two centuries in a royal family that traces its lineage back more than 2,600 years

Japan's crown prince Naruhito will ascend to the Chrysanthemum Throne next May  The Japanese monarchy: a history Ancient historyThe Japanese imperial family is believed to be the world's oldest, with a myth-filled history that dates back more than 2,600 years

Akihito is the 125th emperor since Emperor Jimmu, said to be a descendant of the legendary sun goddess Amaterasu

Emperors have played a crucial role in the country's native Shinto religion, conducting various annual rites and prayers for the prosperity of the nation

Constitutional symbolThe greatest threat to the imperial family's long history came with Japan's defeat in World War II

Some in the Allied camp wanted to end the monarchy in whose name Japanese armies marched through the Asia-Pacific

But US General Douglas MacArthur, who led the post-war occupation, called for it to be retained, though its power was greatly curbed

The current US-imposed constitution took away the emperor's semidivine status and turned him into a national "symbol" as part of a radical democratisation

PopularityUnlike in some countries with royal families, there is no republican movement in Japan and the emperor and royal family have won the admiration of the vast majority of the country

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko journey to sites of natural disasters to console victims, most notably after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster

Akihito also repeatedly warned that Japan must not downplay its 20th-century militarism and actions in World War II -- remarks seen as a rebuke to the nationalist stance of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and likeminded conservatives

Gentlemen's clubThe family operates under hereditary, male-only succession rules, although there have been eight empresses in past centuries

Upon the abdication of Akihito, his oldest son Crown Prince Naruhito will assume the Chrysanthemum Throne

Naruhito's younger brother, Prince Akishino, is next in line. The only other male heir, 10-year-old Prince Hisahito, Akishino's son, is third in line to the throne

The futureIf Hisahito only has daughters, the family is likely to face a succession crisis unless laws are changed

The scarcity of young men in the family has prompted talk of alternatives, including letting women ascend the throne, though traditionalists abhor the idea

Some have suggested that female members of the family who marry commoners should stop losing their royal status -- as will happen to Akihito's granddaughter Princess Mako when she weds her college sweetheart

Others advocate expanding the family to include distant relatives.
