Auto news on Youtube Nov 1 2018

we are committed to being part of what the future holds to helping bring that

future alive and so that means we are innovative we are creative we are

helping our students prepare not for the jobs that are available now but the jobs

that will be available when they graduate and will be available 20 30 40

years from now we are on the brink of the next big tech boom and it's going to

be fueled by these new virtual reality and augmented reality technologies the

new frontier isn't on the other side of the country and it's not on the other

side of the planet the next frontier has the ability to live in every living room

across the United States this is sort of the wormhole to the future and these

screens and these computers but they in themselves are nothing if you can't

create for it and communicate through it and that's what we're going to do to be

the first institution in Virginia with majors in virtual reality and augmented

reality we are announcing three of the first majors in virtual reality in the

state of Virginia and also the country we're also announcing Shenandoah

University's relationship with immersive VR education a publicly traded company

out of London and Ireland where we'll be building a virtual platform and we are

very excited to announce a partnership with Shenandoah University as Shenandoah

specializes in live role-playing training which is a perfect match for

our Engage program we're also announcing the the launch of a

technology corridor and virtual reality here in Shenandoah Valley and the

economic drivers that are going to come from that so we are working to position

Shenandoah University and the Winchester region as a virtual reality design hub

as diverse as the film industry is or the theater industry is you have

from designers to directors to writers and producers this new field is going to

have that same diversity of job opportunities so we have degrees that

are built off of a theater degree one that's built off a theater degree that

really focuses on digital stages and simulation and training one degree

that's built off of a filmmaking degree that is more about production and then

one degree that's built off of a computer science degree that is about

programming so each of those skill sets represents different career

opportunities and different personalities for the students that are

drawn to this field this is on the edge this is like the next thing after the

movies after 3d like you know all that this is this is the next entertainment

industry and I want to be here when it starts to see it so close to home it

gives me a feeling that it's going to be huge in the near future just like how

video platforms when it came to going on to the internet became very popular in

the 2010s up to now right now it's it's starting to turn towards AR and VR and

to see that we are getting ahead of the curve is huge I am a conservatory student I'm

a musical theater major I can directly apply what I'm learning about lighting

design and set design and how to draw your audience member in directly into

programming within Unity or a 360 video it's a push towards the future and I

think it's a big step for Shenandoah I think it's a big step for universities

across the globe quite literally it's a it's our future and it's time that we

start looking at our future as the reality of today and I think that that's

what we're doing and I think it's it's powerful so while we are excited to

invite students to participate in these new degrees we're also excited to invite

corporations and entities to come join our students for us to innovate together

for us to define this new marketplace and to build this brand new culture the

opportunities for this are going to change the way we

work play and educate ourselves it's very exciting era that we're moving into

here at Shenandoah we're focusing on the human to human experience inside of

virtual reality and we're innovating utilizing real human beings inside of

avatars so going forward in the future we no longer have limitations such as

distance or even the laws of physics we can create any virtual environment for

training purposes that we want and join people from anywhere around the world by

embodying full-body avatars and having an experience the students who graduate

from this VR/AR program are going to be hot commodity t hey're going to be in

high demand for major industry partners whether it be in the educational realm

the immersive realm whether it be in the arts and entertainment or training

realms but I also imagine a good number of them are going to want do their own

startup businesses since they will have both the skills and the business know how

to launch a company it's going to start becoming everyone's reality so I think

we need to take initiative and start really accepting it and and not putting

so much of a distance between us and the technology it's here it's now and and

it's exciting

The University of Toronto Amgen Scholars Program - Duration: 3:57.

The University of Toronto Amgen Scholars Canada Program is designed to inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

Supported by the Amgen Foundation

The University of Toronto is the first and only Canadian institution to participate in the Amgen Scholars Program

Which has supported 4,000 students from 700 colleges and universities in the United States Europe and Asia

with fully covered accommodation on the historic University of Toronto downtown campus and

Paid travel expenses to and from Toronto. The program is open to the best undergraduate students from across Canada

Who are passionate about leading the next generation of breakthroughs in biomedical research

Starting in June 2019 Canadian scholars accepted to the program will engage in hands-on research

Alongside top scientists from the U of T's Faculty of Medicine and the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy

My name is Leah Cowen and I'm Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics here at the University of Toronto

And I'm really delighted to be participating as a mentor in the Amgen Scholars Canada Program

U of T is a leader in biomedical research for many different reasons

one of the main reasons is there's just

Outstanding people here in the community. So it's an incredible ecosystem of collaboration

We've got excellent investigators at the level of faculty members. We've got outstanding

students and so we have this incredible talent in a really connected and

Collaborative community that promotes innovation and sharing and discovery and mentoring

My name is Stéphane Angers and I'm the Associate Dean of Research at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy

U of T is located in the middle of the Toronto

Discovery District

Close to hospitals and research institutes, and this is probably one of the richest

Research ecosystem in North America and maybe the world

Literally, there's thousands of labs and research teams located within a block and the level of

Intellectual and physical infrastructure with this block is

actually, very impressive and amazing and I think this is what makes

University of Toronto one of the best location in Canada if not North America to do biomedical research

So in my lab

We are focused on fungal pathogens and the scholars will have an opportunity to be at the forefront of cutting-edge research

So they will be engaged in

Engineering new strains so we can study the function of every gene in these

pathogens genome and that lets us then understand what genes are important for the

Organisms to evolve drug resistance or what genes are important for them to cause disease in host cells for example

So my lab is interested in the signaling mechanism of cancer cells, and we're interested to

Specifically study one class of protein called the WNT proteins which normal function of this protein

Are to regulate stem cells during embryonic development

so we're interested to study the mechanism of mutations within these components of

The signaling pathways we're studying and why these mutation leads to cancer

This is the most exciting opportunity one can imagine this is the most exciting time to be pursuing biomedical research

there's fundamental shifts and technologies that allow us to ask questions and answer questions that we never could before

There's been a lot of amazing breakthroughs in in the last few years that are

opening a lot of new very exciting possibilities and I think that it's a fantastic time to

Start a career in biomedical research

Three universities on brink of BANKRUPTCY as student numbers plunge - Duration: 4:30.

At least three universities are on the brink of going bust with growing numbers dependent on short-term loans 'just to survive', experts warned last night

They said falling numbers of 18-year-olds, increased competition for students and tighter immigration controls on foreign students are pushing universities closer to collapse

Several institutions are being forced to rely on bridging loans to stay afloat. RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Shocking moment thief STEALS a football shirt left in a

Celebrities including Robbie Williams, Jonathan Ross and. Share this article Share Nick Hillman, director of the Higher Education Policy Institute think-tank, said: 'A university going bust is more likely than at any other point in the last generation

'What is of concern is those universities that are resorting to taking out bridging loans to tide them over until their student fees come in

They are borrowing just to survive.'It is understood that a university in the North West and two on the South Coast are under significant financial strain

One is believed to be in talks with insolvency lawyers, the i newspaper reported. The removal of the cap on the number of students universities can accept has led to frenzied competition for recruits

The trebling of tuition fees, which has discouraged some youngsters from going to university, has also played a major part

Matt Robb, an education specialist for management consultancy EY Parthenon, said conditions had become much more difficult for universities

'I would say there are about three or four universities where it is possible [they could go bankrupt],' he said

'They are universities that are in places that are not attractive for students to study, or they are smaller universities that are close to more popular institutions

'Mr Robb warned that a number of universities in London were also at risk, because they have recently seen a dramatic drop in student numbers

He said: 'Some of them may never have been financially viable in the first place, in which case if they are about to go bust, then if there is no compelling public interest let them go bust

'He said universities under financial strain should look to sell off land and properties to try to avoid insolvency

Matt Waddup, head of policy and campaigns at the University and College Union, which represents teaching staff, warned that a university going under would be 'devastating' for the local area

'Along with schools and colleges, universities are the beating heart of their local communities and it is difficult to overstate just how important the spending power of staff and students is for local economies,' he said
