Hi guys, in this video
we're going to show you
5 great ideas for your day trips from Kyoto.
Kyoto is located right in the heart of the Kansai region
which makes a perfect base for these day trips.
So, make the most of your JR Pass
as Kyoto is very well connected,
with plenty of buses and trains passing through Kyoto
to these nearby locations.
Rather than booking a hotel,
you can squeeze in two or even three places
and come back to see Fushimi Inari or Bamboo forest
and hike right to the top of Fushimi Inari, in the evening,
like we did - as these places stay open 24/7.
And if you feel like the nightlife in Kyoto
is a little bit too quiet for you,
like it in our case during our stay in Kyoto,
we're going to show you somewhere
where all you partygoers are going to love.
Ready? Let's get the party started!
Nara. I could bet that a trip to Nara
will be one of the highlights of your trip. since
Since deer are considered to be messengers of the gods in Shinto religion,
you are going to see hundreds a deer roaming around.
Here's what to add to your TO-DO LIST:
1. Feeding the tame deer with deer cookies.
2. Make a deer bow (and bonus points if you can make a human bow to you too!)
3. Escape a deer chewing on your belongings!
Next, visit Todaiji temple,
featuring the world's largest bronze Buddha statue
called Daibutsu weighing 500 tons.
I like to think of it as a big sister
of the Buddha in Kamakura – but... better.
Nara was Japan's first capital, well before Kyoto took over
so expect to see lots of ancient temples,
including Kasuga Taisha,
hidden in the deep, misty forest.
The way up to it is patched with hundreds of stone lanterns.
Himeji castle. Himeji castle is a little bit far out from Kyoto
so get your JR Pass ready- it will come in handy!
Even a 1-day JR pass will pay off in no time!
You cannot argue with it -
this snow-white castle on the hilltop
is the largest and most visited castle in Japan
so you may want to add a trip to Himeji Castle from Kyoto or Osaka.
Even young Sean Connery marked his presence there
as a young James Bond back in 1967!
I came across it a long time ago in my Japanese coursebook
so it was a must-see for us.
If you happen to come here on the sunny day,
then there are plenty of shaded areas
where you come down in.
-It's actually quite breezy in here, right? - t's 32 degrees (89.6 Fahrenheit)
At the top, the views are breathtaking.
That's after climbing up a few floors toreach the top
and by then you will be out of breath anyway.
Non-Japanese speakers? No problem!
Simply scan the code and select your language to learn about the castle.
And whilst you're here, get the feel of what's like
to defend your land and people
from the approaching enemies.
Spoiler alert - during cherry blossom season
Himeji castle gets literally rammed
with thousands of tourists.
If you can't beat them, join them!
Or just run a mile to escape the crowds!
As you're leaving, check out Koko-en Garden,
built in Edo-style with 9 different Japanese landscape gardens,
including water garden, tea garden
and the largest and most colourful koi fish
we have ever EVER seen!
-So those tickets cost us 40 yen each. -Yeah.
I think if you buy the tickets separately, it's 300 yen to come here.
Like if you were coming here just to see the garden, not Himeji castle.
But, we have to go back to catch a train,
in like less than an hour, to Kobe, to try Kobe beef.
That's the highlight of my day!
Kobe. You can venture into Kobe even if it's just for lunch.
Since you can try the original Wagyu beef only in Japan,
Kobe is the best place to try Kobe beef
and it can cost you as much as hundreds of dollars!
But, even if you're on a shoestring budget,
don't worry - we've got you covered!
If you go to Kobe Chinatown called Nankinmachi,
you can get a smaller portion for as little as $20!
Nankinmachi is the 3rd largest Chinatown in Japan
and has some serious mouth-watering food options
so you won't be leaving hungry.
You are going to like duck wraps,
steamed pork buns and dim sum.
And if you're here till the evening, check out
the neon Kobe Harborland and Kobe port tower.
Lake Biwa. During the summer months,
a day trip from Kyoto to Lake Biwa
will be the perfect escape as Kyoto can get quite humid and sticky.
Sightseeing in the heat can become more of a chore
and will start to wear you down.
We actually combined Himeji, Kobe and Lake Biwa,
all on the same day so we really
made use out of our JR passes!
And when we finally got off the local train,
we got whipped with a fresh breeze
from the largest lake in Japan!
We loved the chilled Japanese countryside feel
and a beautiful floating Shirahige Shrine,
which looks like a miniature Itsukushima Shrine.
Shirahige shrine is submerged in water
and it's never overcrowded, making it ideal for relaxation
and the water is a lot warmer if you fancy sport activities.
Osaka. Although Osaka deserves more than just a day trip,
you can still see the best of it a single evening.
Just in time to feed your hungry taste buds.
Remember, Osaka is nothing less than
the gastronomic capital of Japan – and party-goers,
you're going to have a field day here!
Start with the vibrant Dotonbori,
you are not going to feel this vibe
anywhere else in Japan.
Neon lights, gigantic TV screens, street food stands,
night clubs and of course - socialising with the locals.
Foodwise, try delicious street food like takoyaki and okonomiyaki
and if you're more daring – the deadly fugu fish.
Once you're done, burn it all off in the clubs,
they're open until the morning hours!
Just in time for the opening hours of Osaka castle,
which is equally as pretty as Himeji castle,
and the Shinsaibashi shopping area which is
likely to rinse every single yen that you have.
So what did you guys think of our day trips?
Remember that there is a lot more to it than just Kyoto.
