Your doctor has recommended a mesh sling to treat your stress urinary incontinence.

Before we talk about this surgical option, let's review some information about the

female body and this medical condition.

The female bladder is behind the pubic bone and on top of the vagina.

It is in the pelvis, the lowest part of the body between the hips.

The bladder muscle squeezes to empty urine through a short tube called the urethra.

This tube lies under the pubic bone and in front of the vagina.

The urethral sphincter is a muscle at the opening to the bladder.

You control urination by relaxing and squeezing this muscle.

Stress urinary incontinence , SUI (say S-U-I) is uncontrolled urine leaking from pressure

on the bladder and urethra.

This pressure happens with sneezing, coughing, laughing and exercise.

SUI is a problem when the pelvic muscles that support the bladder and urethra, or the urethral

sphincter are weak.

Support problems can start from pressure on these muscles with pregnancy and childbirth,

chronic constipation, extra body weight, smoking, coughing and certain activities like heavy

lifting that are repeated often.

Other risks for female SUI include

low estrogen and menopause

genetics, meaning a woman can be born at risk for weak tissue

and it can be an occasional side effect of pelvic surgery

Some changes can make leaking better without surgery, drink smaller amounts at a time,

quit smoking if you smoke and work to get to a healthy weight if you are overweight.

Another way to help stop leaking without surgery is to make pelvic muscles stronger with Kegels,

also called pelvic floor exercise.

These exercises can help before and after incontinence surgery.

Physical therapists can help with these exercises.

They will sometimes use biofeedback therapy to test if you are exercising the right muscles.

Other tools for this therapy are electrical stimulation and vaginal weights.

If exercise and other changes have not helped stop the leaking then bulking agents may be

an option.

Silicone microbeads or another material is injected into the urethra to make the wall

thicker so that it closes more tightly.

Many patients are better after this but the leaking eventually returns for most.

The injection may be repeated.

Bulking agents are most helpful for people with mild SUI, for patients not ready for

surgery and patients that cannot or should not have surgery.

The sling procedure is a permanent surgical treatment option for women with problem leaking

from SUI.

A sling is a ribbon which can be made of human tissue or plastic fabric called mesh.

The ribbon is looped under the urethra during surgery, to create a sling or hammock.

This adds support for the weak tissues and urethral sphincter and helps stop leaking

for most patients.

Your surgeon has recommended a mesh sling for you.

This means that your sling will be made of a ribbon of plastic fabric called polypropylene

(say "poly-pro-pa-leen").

The main benefits to using mesh instead of human tissue are

mesh slings are faster and easier to place

less time is spent in surgery

incisions are smaller

so healing is faster than if the sling was made from your own tissue.

Mesh slings have been used to treat SUI for over 15 years.

About 8 out of 10 women have no leaking or are drier after this procedure.

As with any surgery there can be problems or complications for some patients.

Mesh exposure in the vagina is one problem that can affect about 3 percent or 3 in 100

women after a mesh sling.

This is when a piece of the mesh is not completely covered by the vaginal wall after healing.

A small edge of the mesh can be felt by the patient or their partner as a screen or gritty

patch in the vagina.

This can usually be fixed with a minor procedure to trim and cover the mesh.

If the exposed mesh is not causing the patient any problems, it can be safe to leave untreated,

and repair if new problems develop.

Mesh exposure is more common in patients that have thin delicate vaginal tissue from low

estrogen.

You may be advised to use estrogen vaginal cream before or after surgery.

Rarely, the mesh causes painful scar tissue, erosion or damage to the bladder or urethra.

Some problems, especially pain are not able to be fixed with surgery.

There are three main types of mesh sling procedure: mini sling, retropubic and transobturator

(say trans-ob-tur-A-tor) . Each way of placing the mesh has its own risks and benefits.

Mini Slings are the newest procedure.

They use the smallest size mesh and only need one small vaginal incision to place.

But we are still learning about how well these work and the problems that patients may have.

The retropubic sling procedure guides the mesh using the pubic bone in front of the

bladder.

This has the highest risk of a small hole being poked in the bladder.

These injuries usually heal quickly if seen and treated at the time of surgery.

This type of sling is the best-studied with proven long-term benefits.

The transobturator procedure guides the mesh in from the side and bottom of the pubic bone.

This is away from the bladder so there is less risk of bladder damage.

Two small incisions are needed in the groin or leg crease to place this mesh.

A risk of this procedure is pain from these groin incisions for some patients.

Mesh is permanent.

During healing your tissues grow into the mesh.

Surgery to remove it can be difficult or impossible to do.

Experts haven't agreed that any one sling procedure is the best.

The procedure recommended for you depends on your surgeon's experience and training

and your individual situation.

Be sure you understand which procedure and sling material is planned for you.

Let's talk about what happens during a Mesh sling procedure.

To start, you are given anesthesia to keep you free of pain during the procedure.

You are positioned carefully.

A thin soft tube, called a Foley may be placed in your bladder.

A tool called a retractor is gently used to enable the surgeon to reach and operate on

the front wall of the vagina.

Here an incision is made.

If you are having a mini mesh procedure, this will be the only incision.

The small piece of mesh is gently positioned under the urethra and the incision is closed.

If you are having a retropubic mesh procedure, the vaginal incision is made followed by 2

small skin incisions above the pubic bone.

If a trans-obturator procedure is done, the vaginal incision is made, followed by 2 small

skin incisions in the groin-crease of the upper-thighs.

For the retropubic and trans-obturator procedures special tools are used to guide the sling

into position under the urethra.

The tools and the way they are used vary for the different procedures and kits.

The mesh is gently positioned to support the urethra without crushing or pressing on it.

This is called tension free.

The ends of the mesh are cut to the needed length.

The mesh holds itself in position.

A cystoscope is gently placed thru the urethra to the bladder and the bladder is filled with

water or saline (pronounced say-leen)

This scope has a light and a camera, and is used to help the surgeon see the inside of

the urethra and bladder during the procedure and after the sling is placed.

The surgeon checks for bleeding, holes in the bladder and for mesh or tools where they

should not be.

At the end of the procedure a foley may be placed.

The vaginal incision and skin incisions are closed.

After surgery "speak-up" and tell your care-team if you have more than expected pain

or problems.

You may be able to go home the same day, but many patients stay overnight.

You may have a foley to drain your bladder.

This is usually taken out before you leave the hospital.

Sometimes the foley needs to stay in a while longer.

You may have vaginal packing.

This soft ribbon of gauze is pulled before you go home.

You will have some pain and soreness but this is usually very mild.

When you are home from surgery, follow your doctor's instructions to have the best results.

The first week rest as much as possible and do not lift anything heavy.

Use Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve or any other pain medication as recommended by your physician.

The first 4 to 6 weeks you must not have sex.

Showering to stay clean is important but don't swim or use a hot tub unless your surgeon

says that it is safe for you to do.

You should not exercise or do any heavy lifting.

There is a very small risk of serious problems.

These can include internal bleeding, injury to the bladder, bowel, urethra or ureter.

More surgery is sometimes needed to correct some problems.

Call your doctor if you: cannot urinate, have a fever, worsening pain or bright red bleeding

that doesn't stop.

Hospital admission, medication or surgery may be needed to fix some problems.

Signs of mesh exposure can be, vaginal discharge that doesn't go away, bladder pain, bleeding

or pain with intercourse.

Be sure to tell your surgeon if you have these symptoms.

Some patients may have bladder side effects early after surgery.

There can be a problem called retention, if you can't urinate or empty your bladder

on own.

If this happens, a catheter is needed for longer than originally planned.

A procedure to loosen the sling is sometimes needed.

Other possible bladder side effects include a new or worse feelings of urgency, or feeling

like you have to urinate because of bladder muscle spasm.

Or you may still have leaking.

You should not have a sling if you have bladder spasm causing overflow or urge incontinence

unless it is treated first because it can be made worse with a sling.

To help your body heal eat healthy foods.

Avoid junk food and sugary drinks and snacks.

If you are a smoker, don't smoke.

And if you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.

Both smoking and high blood sugar slow healing.

To avoid cancellation or complications from anesthesia or your procedure, your Job as

the Patient is to

not eat or drink anything after midnight, the night before surgery, not even a stick

of gum

take only medications you were told to on the morning of surgery with a sip of water

stop your aspirin or blood thinners before surgery as you are instructed

and arrive on time

You should be ready to verify or confirm your list of medical problems and surgeries, all

of your medications, including vitamins and supplements, your current smoking, alcohol

and drug use and all allergies, especially to medications, latex and tape

All surgery and anesthesia have a small but possible risk of serious injury, even some

problems very rarely leading to death.

It is your job to speak up and ask your surgeon if you still have questions about why this

surgery is being recommended for you, the risks and alternatives.

This video is intended as a tool to help you better understand the procedure that you are

scheduled to have or are considering.

It is not intended to replace any discussion, decision making or advice of your surgeon.

سارة أبوشعر MBC: التعليم خط الدفاع الأول ضد الإرهاب | Education First Line of Defense Against Terror - Duration: 6:30.

She had just finished delivering an inspiring speech

at the World Youth Forum

when media channels began to activate

with discussion about her powerful delivery and strong message

and people started to ask: who was the speaker?

Joining us over Skype is the activist

for education, youth and women:

Sarah Abushaar

To begin, Sarah, let me ask you about your take on the World Youth Forum

especially as the forum took place amidst

numerous leaders and persons of authority

What was the message you delivered to them?

At the outset, I'd like to thank you for having me

In response to your question, some years back

I had gained the opportunity to deliver the graduation address at Harvard

I called my message: The Harvard Spring

In it, I had called for a revolution in minds,

not in arms and weapons...

I reinforced this call at the World Youth Forum

where my message to leaders and those in authority was:

to focus on education

of their people

While the news grabs our attention with

issues of oil prices and conflict,

we lose sight of what is far more important and decisive

to determining the wealth and peace of our countries

Our youth have the ability to represent

a powerful natural resource

far more important than oil and gas

and without finite supply

if we invest the enormous amounts

that we waste today on war and weapons

in the education of our young people

And I'm not speaking about any education,

but a differentiated education

This is our countries' most effective defense against terror and wars

We often fight terror with war

but this is not the solution

This is precisely what breeds terror in the future

We fight terror with thinking and culture..

with curriculums that foster independent thinking

not the negation of difference

and that provide young people the freedom

and the chance to think big and dream big

not confining their thinking and expression

Our nations progress when our people progress

This was the message that I sought to deliver to leaders and authority

Sarah, you spoke about the critical role of education

My question to you is: is education, alone, sufficient?

No, certainly not. And this was the second part of my message

That education alone is not enough

We need to empower young people

to engage them and enable them to participate in building up their societies

I was 18 when I gained the chance to

intern at the White House

This empowered in me a sense that I had a role in impacting policy

and making a real difference for society

It filled me with a sense of empowerment and

a strong sense of responsibility toward society

Very often, I participate in conferences and forums on youth

where we discuss challenges and issues facing young people

and yet the youngest person representing the voice of youth is 60 years old

And it's true, he was a youth -- but 30 years ago...

We need to create the space for young people to participate

in shaping a future and building a world that we will live

As societies, we tend to regard young people as though they are "the problem"

but young people can be a big part of the solutions

if we enable young people's participation and engagement in governance

So, do you intend by this that by empowering young people and creating the chance for them to participate

for them to take the place of previous generations?

Can you provide further perspective?

No, what I intend by this is for young leaders to be able to work with leaders and to take part

in drawing out the roadmaps forward

Because if young people have the sense that they are working constructively on building something

there would be little rationality for young people to think of destroying that -- of destroying what they build

I'm not calling for a generation to take the place of another

Rather, to enable young people to have a real part and to join

in the work of building up their worlds

My last question to you, Sarah:

What is the message you deliver to young people?

Of course

The work of change and progress is not solely the responsibility of our governments

As young citizens,

we have an important role to play, too, and a large responsibility

We cannot simply stand off to the side, arms crossed

and say: we will participate when things get better

We are an important part of improving things

My message to young people was

Persist in your audacious dreams. Persist in what you believe in

and work toward them everyday

And you will find that probabilities and impossibilities

start to mean very little

and that we can break probabilities

with hope and hard work

Don't lose hope and look to failure as final and definitive

and instead as the push that powers us forward to try again

I don't believe in impossible

I believe we have the ability to break the impossible

My experience has given me good reason to believe

in big dreams and in striving toward them with strong determination and perseverance

With us via Skype was the activist

for education, youth and women

Sarah Abushaar - thank you

I return to you, my colleagues

Let us provide our commentary on what we discussed

First off, I'd like to give a hats off to you and and a hats off to Sarah

Thank you for casting light on this inspiring personality

Sarah summarizes

the fundamentals of battling the challenges of life

Her life's title:

"It is hard, but it is not impossible"

"There is no impossible.."

Definitely, I appreciated that she

is persistent and determined

She has not grown disillusioned

What draws me, more and more, as of late

is the number of young people who have started to stand up and speak up -- to take on leadership

in important places

speaking up before powerful leaders

without fear and with all courage and ability --

-- It's because they live what they are speaking of

You see, he who speaks up, must read

He who can create from the heart of challenge

speaks freely without the need to be told what to say

Thank you, once again, Hazim

We'll be right back after the break

Access to Education Powers Change - Duration: 1:49.

Growing up we had a very unstable environment just because of the fact that

we were constantly moving, there were a lot of financial instabilities,

a lot of conflicts occurring at home.

I'm a grade 9 dropout.

I spent several years as a street kid

and joined the forces when I was 17.

I didn't understand how life worked outside of the military.

Many of the things we take for granted in our lives

I did not have those basic skills. It was a very, very difficult time in my life.

Being at Ryerson was the first time I felt that I belonged.

This is because of the incredible community that is here,

the amazing supports that were available.

The number one thing I would want to do is to be able to pay it forward

because had it not been for all the people

and the support that I had, I wouldn't be here today.

Access to education, especially around Ryerson,

seems to be one of the driving forces at the university.

I think that Canadian society would benefit from having more places like Ryerson.

Places that really understand the challenges and the barriers,

the real systemic barriers,

that prevent individuals from getting an education.

If we make too many barriers

then we're really closing ourselves off to a whole population

of people who can contribute so much through university education.

By having a diversity of opinions inside a classroom,

by having a diversity of views and diversity of people inside a university,

it makes our education much richer.

In doing that, I think that is a powerful engine of social change.

Vladimir Putin Holds Meeting of Presidential Council for Science and Education - Duration: 1:52:18.

Good afternoon, colleagues,

It is a pleasure to see everyone here. I believe our meeting is a very significant, maybe even a milestone event. I will explain later what I mean. I hope that together we will take an objective, impartial look at the results we are striving to achieve and,

of course, determine further steps to strengthen and, most importantly, promote the country's scientific potential in order to fully comply with our ambitious goals and the need to achieve the breakthrough that Russia requires.

First of all, I would like to remind you that over six years ago we changed the format of the Council for Science and Education and moved away from unnecessary ceremonial and protocol events.

I believe that the Council has become a key and, importantly, a working platform for a dialogue between representatives of the state, the universities and the academic community in general.

I believe that precisely such open and substantive interaction allowed us to prepare and adopt such a complex and fundamental document as the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development, to identify promising ways for promoting university science and advanced research infrastructure and reorganising the academic sector.

I called today's meeting a milestone event, because we can sum up intermediate results and take a glimpse into the future. In recent years, we managed to create state-of-the-art laboratories, to implement a megagrant programme and to launch a support system for young talented researchers. In a word, we opened up new opportunities for our fellow citizens, young and very young researchers.

I am quite certain that, like all other researchers, they are interested in playing an important part in achieving complex and ambitious goals that we set for ourselves today to ensure our country's technological leadership and its participation on an equal footing with other countries in the global scientific process.

The things I am saying now are, of course, not simply some empty and lofty words. This is a matter of our existence and even survival in the full sense of the word.

Knowledge, technologies, competencies and human resources are the foundation for implementing our national projects and achieving our strategic goals. We are talking about a brand new quality of life, opportunities for self-realisation; about the general competitiveness of our society, economy and country in the world of the future.

We need breakthrough discoveries and developments that will make it possible to manufacture world-class Russian products and create a strong technological and production base, upgrade the transport infrastructure, introduce new construction technologies,

improve the current state of the environment and healthcare, which includes our independence in key segments of the pharmaceutical industry, and increase our food security, including on the strength of our own seed and livestock resources.

Our institutes, universities, higher education institutions must provide us with full scientific and intellectual assistance for implementing national projects and development programmes and training a professional workforce to address complex research, technological and production issues.

I ask the Government to ensure the direct cooperation and coordination of the efforts of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education's and of other agencies and authorities in the regions. I ask that this mechanism be developed and introduced promptly.

I will expand on this issue a bit later. As I have said, science, technology and education must run through our every national project and programme. In its concentrated form, this work will be carried out within the framework of our special, separate national project Science.

I would like to remind you that over 300 billion rubles has been allocated for the implementation of this national project in the course of the next six years, resulting in a total of 635 billion rubles from all sources. It is crucial for us to decide how to manage these resources.

I have mentioned more than once that it is necessary to provide assistance to strong teams of researchers and engineers who engage in breakthrough and promising research. The grant support mechanism is based on this principle and has been used to launch major scientific projects in which leading international experts are taking part.

However, let us face it, for all their effectiveness, grants have not in the full sense become a catalyst for system-wide changes in the academic and university environment. Most of the funds allocated for science are still distributed as part of routine government procurement. In fact, what is being funded, in excessive amounts, are institutions or, more precisely, their administrative expenses. Please take note of that. This is important.

I will give you more numbers. What we need to finance is not administrative expenses, but living research conducted in the interests of the country, the economy and our citizens. However, what we have now is a situation where the state gives out money without articulating state needs, which are often very ambitious and are of a fundamental nature. In fact, the appropriate ministries have been removed from formulating these goals.

Laboratories identify areas of research themselves. At first glance, this is not a bad thing, because it always goes hand in hand with research creativity and creativity in general. However, we have come up with a system of grants precisely to finance such projects.

Within this system of grants, the researchers themselves determine what they should focus on and how they should go about it. The state only helps financially and administratively. But unfortunately, there are many examples of research institutions doing the same kind of research for decades on end without much to show for it.

I think young and promising specialists either leave these 'research' teams soon or just break down mentally for lack of interest.

For your information, last year, 40 percent of the research subjects at academic institutions failed to produce a single research paper that could be entered into any citation base. That is, there are either no results whatsoever, or no one has any interest in them.

Or take another situation. Instead of ordering a specific technology or new equipment, the concerned agencies order analytical reports and forecasts. Of course, we need these as well. But instead of getting results from ongoing research projects we get yet another package of presentations and tables, which are available in open access magazines.

Yes, of course, we need this work as well. But why describe it as research? And is it worth the money we invest in it? Do you know how much we spend on this? 40 billion rubles.

By the way, back in 2014 I issued instructions to streamline state orders so that a large number of them would be assigned through tenders. This system is being applied to universities.

But why is it not being used at research establishments? I do not understand this. Why has their efficiency been inspected yet no managerial decisions have been taken based on their results?

Please note that we have three categories of research establishments, from first to third. As far as I know, first-category research establishments receive the same kind of financing as third-category ones. What is this? Socialist egalitarianism? Why have we divided them into categories then?

One more thing: we agreed that the Russian Academy of Sciences would submit a programme for fundamental research in 2017 as part of its new functions.

Vladimir Fortov said the following on November 23, 2016. Mr Fortov, I will quote you: there is nothing shameful in quoting an academician, especially when he is such an outstanding person as Mr Fortov. You said: "The Russian Academy of Sciences shall draft and submit to the Government a draft fundamental research programme for 2018–2025 and beyond."

I know the Academy now has new management, but the concept of continuity has not been discarded. We pin our hopes on this. I would like to hear today how you are proceeding with this task. I hope Mr Sergeyev [President of the Russian Academy of Sciences] will tell us about it.

Let me repeat that the timeframe is compressing and the scale of tasks and challenges is very big, it is enormous. If we continue squandering money, inching forward or simply mulling yesterday's problems, we will be late. Moreover, we might be late forever and fail to jump on even the last carriage of the technological revolution train.

We need to focus all our efforts on the areas that correspond to the national goals and priorities of the Science and Technology Development Strategy, to use the mechanism of major research programmes with measurable goals and accountability for the results.

This programmatic approach will make it possible to rule out duplication and set clear objectives for research institutes and universities, state and private companies, individual laboratories and scientists. And we must, of course, make full use of the potential of research and education centres, which are currently being formed, as a resource for the spatial, intellectual and technological development of Russia.

Colleagues, I would like to underscore that we will not scrimp on science. Certainly not. However, we need to ensure that the enormous funds yield returns for the state and society and, ultimately, for the development of science itself. What is proposed in this regard?

First, it is necessary to set uniform requirements for all ministries and agencies in terms of the procedure for submitting state assignments for R&D and selecting topics for research projects, and to work out uniform qualification standards for their leaders.

Second, it is necessary to build a transparent and objective expert review process for results at all stages of research and formulate clear evaluation criteria, using the experience of the Russian Fund for Basic Research and the Russian Scientific Fund.

I know that far from all colleagues agree that one of the key performance indicators for basic research should be the number of research papers in leading publications and the citation index. Frankly speaking, I see their point. I understand that there are various fields of activity, that some are cited, while others are deliberately not cited – all that is clear, all that is understandable.

But then, it is necessary to work out, as I am asking you, some objective criteria for evaluating results, based on reputational responsibility and the assessment of the professional community. How about that? After all, we do need some methods for the evaluation of research results. This needs to be done.

Now let us turn to applied research. It should not result in reports and some number of innovations but in a practical contribution from the implementation of these innovations, such as gains in longevity, lower mortality rates for various illnesses, environmental rehabilitation of territories,

higher transport speeds and reliability, energy efficiency and effective digital solutions in all spheres as well as gains in labour productivity, high-tech exports and Russia's defence capability, of course.

Third, we have set the task of replacing at least a half of the instrument base at research organisations. We should understand clearly what equipment can really provide for breakthroughs and which goals and tasks we want to solve with it so that the purchased equipment is not left to gather dust or become obsolete even before it is used, which happens sometimes.

It is critically important for Russian research infrastructure, including megascience facilities, to be the best in the world. This is the only way Russia can become an "intellectual magnet" for prominent scientists and researchers.

And this brings us to number four: I believe that we should make science much more open, including publishing the results of civilian research carried out with government funds, which, of course, will increase the researchers' sense of responsibility, popularise Russian science and promote the export of our innovations and educational services.

And, of course, the process of awarding academic degrees and titles as well as electing corresponding members and academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences should become more transparent and open to the public.

I am confident that we will be able to effectively address the tasks at the national level, if scientists and science in general enjoy the unconditional trust and support of society, of all Russians and Russia in general. We must aspire to this and achieve it.

Let us proceed to discussing the proposed issues.

- ... to take action for education.

- I think education

plays a huge part in helping people achieve their dreams.

You have the power to impact this entire world

by starting first in your community.

- I believe education is the centerpiece

of everything that kind of ails us in society.

Every community in the inner city - you can look around

and you can see destitution

and say, "Wow, how can we push a different narrative

to these kids so they can see more

than what they see in front of them

every single day?"

- Everywhere I've been, every city I've played for,

I've always made it a point to get involved

in the community, because

the community had a big part of raising me.

Nice, good job.

- Mentorship is probably the most important thing

that anybody can do in their life.

That's the mark you leave on this earth.

- My parents sat me down from Day One,

even when I picked up the ball, they was like,

"The books come first."

No matter what you do in life you're gonna make sure

you're on the right academic path.

- When I started off with my foundation

and my girls basketball program,

we started out in a little old gym,

in the heart of South Dallas.

And so, a lot of these kids are less fortunate,

in low-income households.

Those kids were just like me.

Without a college scholarship, they will not be able

to attend college. And so,

I will want every kid to at least have that opportunity.

- I started my foundation in 2013,

while playing here in Chicago and finding out

how the incarceration rate is directly related

to the dropout rate in high schools.

It kind of sparked a passion in my heart to impact that.

- A piece of advice that I give to kids:

Come to the Boys and Girls Club.

My dad was a mentor, worked here for a long time,

and it was my responsibility to come behind him

and to do the same.

- Most inner cities today don't have computers, period.

I just try to build these computer labs in schools

where it gives them access to technology.

If you're from an impoverished background or community,

you should still have the opportunity

to see what's out there.

Just putting that out in front of children

is the most important thing.

- I'm just all about impacting someone's life

in a positive way.

Come on. One shot, just try.

Look at that! Look at that!

What I like about Donors Choose is just that -

the donors get to choose the projects

that they wanted to fund. And I just started funding

different projects. And it was awesome,

because the teachers immediately respond back.

You can tell how grateful they are.

It doesn't have to be a thousand dollars.

It can be 10 dollars.

It goes a long way - that's a pack of pencils.

- Hand me your ball, hand me your ball.

Whop-whop, get 'em! Good!

- A way that any person, just in general, can effect change

is just being a mentor, and helping a kid be the best

that he can be.

- When kids see somebody that cares about them

they say, "Hey, I'm gonna work harder because

this person believes in me."

And that's all it takes.

- In my organization, over the last 10 years

we have a hundred percent graduation rate.

All our girls go to college on either athletic

or academic scholarships.

No one slips through the cracks.

- Everybody has an opportunity to give back something,

and it's not always monetary.

- It's just time. You can't buy time so,

if a mentor can give any amount of minutes to a kid

that's monumental.

- As a community we just need to come together

and come up with a plan and start executing it,

to kind of help the kids that need it the most.

- One of the things nowadays that I really want

to build in the community is the relationship

between the law and the community that they

protect and serve.

If you take action, you can make change.

- Take action to me

means get involved, be hands-on,

have an impact.

- There's kids everywhere that just want

somebody to play with them,

throw a football with them, shoot hoops with them.

That is within the power of every single person

in this country, in this world.

- Life really comes down to making decisons.

The better your education is, the better decisions

you guys will make.

My main goal and mission is to change lives

through the way of education.

Through my foundation they can make those good decisions,

and even give back to their own community.

- This isn't just, you know, a pet project.

This is a must for our communities.

- Don't have no shortcuts in life. If you sacrifice,

there's a piece of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I'm just glad that I was able to come back

just so they know that I was a product, too,

and that they aren't so far behind

if they just

keep on doing what they can do to be better

every day.

- It has a lasting impact on, not only the kids,

but the schools going forward, and the teachers.

- Education is in the people.

It's in getting to know you, getting to know me,

getting to know his story, her story.

And making it a part of your story.

maybe longer if I get reelected so anyway congratulations to those board

members who have just recently been through an election after I want to go

and the students and the parents so that can leave so that they don't feel bad

right before we do the finance reports from mr. Henson and also I have an

action item that we need to take or consider

and we can do that right prior to open session or something we can do that it's

Altrusa soup contribution that the board normally does and I just like to

get the go-ahead to do that we've historically done that and anything

from building and grounds that needs to be added we do mr. Chairman I had one one

items around okay without objection we will add one item of building and

grounds right after the finance reports would that be okay mr. Rogers be fine

sir between 13 and 14 just remind me when we get to that point please anything

else finance has a couple things need to be added to the agenda okay is there any

objection to any of these additions or adjustments no sir

there being none that be added to the agenda as requested all right next we

have dr. putnam has got a whole lot of recognition to do but all of them are

very important so dr. putnam mr. chairman members of the board

I'd like to recognize Bethel middle school volleyball team I'd ask

that their coach Rebecca Smith come forward so that

we might properly recognize these young ladies

want to say thank you recognizing us tonight

we've had quite a few accomplishments this

year our season Haywood County champs and western blue ridge

Conference champs our team this year was exceptionally great team and teamwork

with our main focus this year and these girls 100 percent

accomplished it they worked well together

community and parent support

Girls if you would come forward

Whitney Boone Sierra Early Gracelyn Buress Saylor Trull Letti Jo Watson

Caroline Watson Naomi Goodwin Elizabeth Smith Mary Revis

Maddie Rhea Kristi Shuford

and of course I could not do without my assistant coaches Spencer Reeves and

Sarah Smith

this time I'd like to recognize Waynesville middle school's cheer team

I will ask who's coming to speak for Waynesville middle you'll see I'll ask

their coach to come and present these young ladies so we can recognize them

properly

all right um we want to recognize our Waynesville middle-school squad when coach

Chelsea told me we were going to keep 21 middle school girls I thought she was a

little crazy but these 18 plus the couple that we have out sick

have worked together they've been so great they're good to each other their

parents are very supportive and we couldn't have done it without them and

they work really hard and we look forward to going to state so Rebecca

Becker Krista Bradley Bailey Broom Cline Carver Hannah Coggins

Captain McKenna Coley Chloe

Crawford Kelllie Ferguson Ava Flowers

Abi Francis Katelyn Francis Madison Melrose Madison Morrow-Rickman senior

wonderful captain Grace Nickol

Anna Reister who's not here Jayla Stevens Chloe Thompson Arden Weaver who's

out sick and then Abbey Westhoven and Landry Wilson girls got zero deductions

at their competition they came first in their division and then

they were also grand champions for the day with a high score for the day so

we're really proud of them

and the coaches for that group thank you very much

they didn't recognize themselves but thank you that's typical of a coach

yeah

all right next up we have Pisgah high school we're going to begin with their

Cheer team so if we could have

hello I'm Tammy Ensley I'm the varsity cheer coach at Pisgah high school my

team traveled to Cox Mill High School in Concord they competed in the Piedmont

pre state competition we placed first in our division and now we will be

traveling to Raleigh on December 1st to compete at the North Carolina High

School Athletic Association state championships

Maycie Henry captain Adison Spivey

captain Madison Owen captain Anna Lee Swanger Kiara Walker

Amyia Dietz Lilly Ensley

Callie Jorstad Sydney Messer

Trinity Norton Emily Robinson Alyssa Wilson Brooke Moore Mollie Lanning Molly

Boothroyd Madison Deaver Katiana Sepulveda Allie Roberts Shelby Bramlett

Allie Lipe Kendall Owen

Tara MassIe is our black bear mascot she goes with us everywhere we go

boy I really know how to empty a room don't I so next we have Pisgah soccer and

I'm I asked their coach to come forward so we can acknowledge some special

recognitions for Pisgah soccer this first year well I've been coaching

middle school soccer for 26 years now it's the first year as a high school

coach and I'm really proud of these young men what they accomplished six

wins on the season three wins in the conference and they they just it's not

anything I did me and coach Drury Kevin Drury my assistant coach he did a

great job as well but it's just these guys worked their tails off and I did

everything that I knew they could do so I'm proud of these guys and we've got

Brian Castillo-Pina got mountain six Conference Player of the Year

well-deserved he played for me at the middle school four years at the high

school great young man and he's he's gonna be playing somewhere I'm fully sure

he's me playing somewhere in college we got to Coby Hendrie also play for me

down to middle school great young man he too should be playing college soccer

somewhere both these guys and a great young man appreciate all his effort too

one more Zariah Smith also earned all-conference honors he's not here but

we got to stand in we got another young man that he's a senior

this year great young man you could you could run and you could kick him you

whatever you want and he would smile how about smiling no matter what he's a fine

young man I appreciate him being here

thank y'all for all your support and everything to we appreciate it

we have Pisgah tennis so if Pisgah tennis could step forward

dr. Nolte members the board thank you for having us here tonight I've brought

with me Carli Stiles and Allie Fisher two of three that were not only regional

but also qualified for state Allie and Maeanna Norrisk are the first ones in

Pisgah history to anyone's knowledge that had made it past regionals and

continued on and finished in the top four in the state this year really quick

give you a little rundown on some of these young ladies and what they've

accomplished Carli played with me for years she's lost a total of five

matches in four years

Allie and Maeanna as I said made the state tournament this year all all four

of our regional qualifiers this year that were in our region this western

region ended up being the four top teams in the state to give you an idea of what

is coming out of our region and one of the other state qualifiers was Smoky

Mountain so not only were they out of this region but they were in our

conference so that gives you a little idea of what what these young ladies

have accomplished and the other thing is they started playing about August 2nd of

their freshman year they won two matches their freshman year won conference the

next year and have been runner-up in conference for the last two years but

that's not all for the last four years they have also been in the top five in

the state for GPA so these young ladies have accomplished a lot in there four

years and they're going to be missed greatly as well as their teammates

so with that Allie Fisher

Carli Stiles and just as another little side note and I'm sorry for that the

starting six that we had we're all all-conference this year which is

another big accomplishment for this group so thank you all and I appreciate

you recognizing these young ladies

and next we have also from Pisgah cross country ask their coach to come

forward and introduce their team we've got some special individuals to

recognize I'm Stephanie Kuykendall and this is Charlie Inman we had our first

cross-country season this year and our guys team set a goal to make it to state

and they did so they placed sixth in regions regionals to secure a place at

state in Kernersville Carter Binkley led our team as a senior Jake Moore's not

with us today Paul Gonzales Cameron Bailey and Bo

Bowers Carter has gone to state every all four years with coach Goodwin if I'm

talking correctly right he and Jake made all-conference Carter was all regional

and placed 13th at state with a time of 16:51 it was cold down there it was rainy

but they endured the weather and did a great showing so

Carter Binkley Paul Gonzales Cameron Bailey Bo Bowers

if you needed one of them I will not chase them I would not be successful

next we have Tuscola soccer so if we could have Tuscola's coach come

forward to present some special awards

mr. chairman members of the board thank you for having us here tonight my name

is Ian Meeks I'm the head coach at Tuscola it's my first year there so it's

been kind of a different winging I'm actually the guy that switched from

Pisgah to Tuscola so it's a little bit different for me we'll say this was

definitely a building year for us tuscola is certainly not used to the record

that we had this year but the boys showed true character and teamwork

throughout the whole year two gentleman next to me are actually captains and the

whole year found a way to build the team up no matter what they try to keep

things light and they also tried to make sure that when players try to get on top

of each other they were there together to try and make sure that we remained a

team the whole time it's hard when you're in a frustrating

year to do that and I commend both these gentlemen for that the whole year first

is a Manny Trejo-Lugo and before I present his award just to let you know a

little bit about him he was captain this year he's actually started two years I

believe right Manny he was all-conference had he was 12th in

points for our conference which to go up with teams like Asheville and AC

Reynolds and TC Roberson has some of their powerhouses to be one of the top

leading point scorers and soccer is is pretty impressive so I think there's

something for us to take forward from Manny I know that he has told me also

that he's interested in college could potentially play he's just not really

sure about that so Manny Trejo Lugo

also Sterling Thomas was our goalkeeper had a remarkable year this was

Sterling's first year as a full-time goalkeeper he was in goal about halftime

last year he set a school record for career and season saves which is

remarkable as a especially when you're playing almost only one year he had

about two hundred and forty five saves I believe combined and probably saved us

from getting mercy rule many games who are out there he's definitely one of our

academic superior students on the team sterling made not only all-conference

but he was first team all-region so the sad thing is I wish I can

convince him to play soccer in college but I believe he's gonna play baseball

next I'll ask mr. Shelton to come and we're not sure that these young ladies

are here but we want to read their name and recognize them just the same for

their accomplishments in volleyball so Tuscola volleyball mr.

Shelton I am NOT the volleyball coach obviously our volleyball coach Pam

Bryant along with these two seniors has been instrumental in turning Tuscola

volleyball around over the past few years we've had unprecedented success

especially over the past three years and these two seniors Jade Monday and Livy

Rich have been instrumental in that along with other seniors and folks who

have graduated before both of these young ladies were named WMAC

all-conference players both young ladies I believe along with coach Bryant are

with the basketball team tonight at their scrimmage so I'm happy on behalf

of Tuscola to accept these certificates and take them to them

tomorrow so thank you all very much

we did have a couple that did not show up for various other reasons we're going

to recognize Pisgah varsity football and Pisgah JV football maybe the next

board meeting

next on our agenda we have Ms. Jill Barker

wow that was awesome to see so many of our students and my child's friends and

family and congratulations all these great athletes and and so many of them

are stellar students too and that's what matters and that's what I'm here I'm

chairman Francis members of the board our state has recognized several of our

schools and we wanted to provide them that recognition tonight it's just an

honor to see all the hard work that goes into these academic accolades that our

County continues to receive but I do once you know these did not come these

awards we are given out don't happen by accident

as a principal I know that I know the hard work is not the principal of the

school it's not the lead teacher it's not it's everybody in that school it's

the custodians is if they're not if they had a bad bus ride it's I remember when

we used to get the old ABC Money dr. bill and we would split that every year

the staff would to agree to split that I mean everybody the after school workers

because it takes everyone in that school and our kids benefit from that so I'm

really proud of all the stake holders tonight and I know tonight the

principals are here or representative and I know they've congratulate their

kids and their staffs but that always means a lot to me you know just to know

that it's every single person so congratulations to all the faces that

are behind these awards okay we're ready

okay

okay Bethel elementary for meeting expected growth

got her bethel blue on that's right

next Bethel middle school for median expected growth in Bethel blue again

okay canton middle school for meeting academic

growth

Clyde elementary school meeting expected growth proud Cardinal Haywood early

college for exceeding expected academic growth Hazelwood elementary meeting

expected growth

Jonathan Valley Elementary for meeting expected growth

Junaluska elementary school meeting expected growth

Meadowbrook elementary again meeting expected growth

Pisgah high school meeting expected growth

it's a love-hate relationship Riverbend elementary for meeting expected growth

okay I just want to thank everyone for coming out and again I know you've

already thanked your staffs if I see you out there and I see all that hard work

and I know dr. bill and the whole office and I also wanted to say as a principal

last year thank you to the central office staff for always supporting me

Jason would come hold my hand Jeff would come out call Ron you know so it means

a lot of principle to have that support from the central office staff I'm on the

other side of that now and to our board who always encourages us and supports us

so it's not always that way and everywhere and so we do appreciate that

thank you very much

everybody's gone we don't need to keep going okay carry on miss Barker of the

board's decided we're not going to take a recess it looks like everyone's

already gone we run them off all right so as I promised earlier the state did

send out some updated data where we could kind of disaggregate and separate

the Middle's from the Elementary's so I wanted to show you the first first slide

is this yes I'm sorry I put my glasses on it is is our elementary schools I want

you to know there are 829 elementary schools that were title one in the state

Riverbend elementary has the highest performance in the state of North

Carolina of 829 elementary schools they were number two in the state out of I'm

not sure well over a thousand elementary schools without including title one not

title one so yeah that's just a great accomplishment for them and I mean for

Jill and she couldn't be here tonight but she we did talk about that and Karen

and she's very proud and that's just something else at night our other

elementary schools equally I feel very good about their performance and miss

King's going to scroll down for us and you can see the schools in between and I

put that up so you can look at that your own pleasure you can see that

that's Junaluska and Bethel Elementary both in the top 7% of elementary schools

in the state North Canton elementary in the top 10% of title one elementary

schools in the state and I was looking at their reading a five-year reading

trend and it just keeps ticking upward so I'm very proud of them

Meadowbrook Elementary my glasses on 18% percent scroll

on down Clyde elementary and the top 21 percent

Jonathan Valley Elementary in the top twenty two and Hazelwood in the top

twenty seven percent of elementary schools and then Brooke's going to show

you just how many not to embarrass them as dr. nolte said but just to let

you know just how many schools we try not to get caught up in we do want to

get better and continue to get better but we got to take these moments to

breathe a little and celebrate our people and the hard work they've done

because we have our own obstacles it's not always you know perfect in the

mountains we have our own issues and our people work extremely hard and I

just commend them for that and you can see she's still scrolling so if you get

a chance to get by talk to them and just tell them congratulations are very proud

of them any questions about the Elementary it's a great job just

thank you to Belinda Trantham and Ron Moss for providing that elementary

support for them and I appreciate all they do they make sure those teachers

are trained and supported and you know hats off to them alright let's look at

our middle schools and I do not have a count on here so anyway we'll just go

you can see these are all six eighth and middle schools are a little different

because a lot of these are you know a lot of districts they go to five six

schools and so it's harder to capture a look at a true middle school but when I

pull the six eight schools then this is where we are you can see Bethel middle

and the top 17% of these middle schools Waynesville middle and the top 24% and

Canton middle and the top 33% and again many many schools that are past us still

a lot of work to do very very proud of our middle schools though and how they

perform and just their enthusiasm for getting better and the things that I see

happening I feel very good about and I just won't say you

know mr. Haney is not here right now but he's done a phenomenal job meeting with

him I'd say he's in those schools every day or every other day I mean he is

constantly I'm providing them some great support and and they're working really

really hard so we'll continue to just try to support them and help them in

every way we know how so any questions about middle schools I just want to say

when we saw into recognitions of athletic performances from a lot of our

middle schools now we're seeing the academic so I mean it says a lot for our

district to be as well-rounded and for our children as we are I mean that's

just phenomenal it really is I agree I agree I you know that's a big part of

our community and doctor Bill has always spoke to look at our band look it I said

last year up his got our kids find their way and they find their niche and within

our schools and we have great schools and it's not just academic it's it's athletic

it's band it's it's FFA it's all kinds of programs and

so we appreciate your support any other questions no questions congratulations

again thank you

absolutely mrs. king did anyone signed up to address the board this evening

thank you board members you've had an opportunity to look at the October 8

closing regular session minutes make a motion we approve as is second

we have a motion from mr. Kirkpatrick second mr. Francis any questions or

discussion on the motion there being none we'll vote all those in

favor say aye opposed motion carries unanimously

I don't need to take official action on this or not but in the past we've given

$100 to the altrusa on behalf of the board you want to continue with that

I'll make a motion to continue to donate to altrusa second

2nd mr. Rogers well it is official now after we vote of course any questions or

discussion on the motion there being none we'll vote all those in

favor say aye opposed motion carries unanimously and miss Gardner if you see

if we could get a donation to them on behalf the board I'd appreciate that

thank you next we have a memorandum of

understanding from dr. Nolte mr. chairman members of the board staff and

guests we have we we meet now frequently with dr. Parker and a number of the

college staff people we usually meet on two topics while we're there the early

college and then overall college offerings that students and our

traditional schools can take and so one of the things we've been doing is

updating our memorandum of understanding related to academics we did the one

related to the cafeteria a month or so ago you all may remember that it has

essentially the same framework we do have some new offerings for students you

are familiar with the electrical and some other things that are new

we sent this to mr. Smathers and he's looked at it and tells us it's it's all

legal and so we have it posted there for your

preview and would request your approval of the agreement at this time I'd

like to make a motion we approve the memorandum agreement

okay okay we have a motion from mr. Jimmy Rogers do I hear a second

Second miss Barrett to approve the Memorandum of Understanding between us

and Haywood Community College any questions our discussion on the motion

on the floor it's a great continue working relationship and continuing to

grow like say our program as well as helping our community and our college as

well I think the relationship is as good as it's been in a long time we talked a

couple of times today about different things I agree any othr questions or

discussion there being none we'll vote all those in favor say aye aye opposed

motion carries unanimously thank you dr. Nolte next we have dr.

Putnam gonna talk to us a little bit about a whole bunch of policies gonna read

each one and if history reminds me I mean Don Cook was on the board he used to read

every single word that was gonna be my punchline okay through every one loud

I'm a little bit of a slow reader no all of those have been provided to you what

you have in front of you there should have been a sheet placed in front of you

that kind of gives you a synopsis of what has occurred in the way of policy I

will before I jump into that I'll just remind you that policy 7510 regarding

leave is being it's up for the second reading so that will remain in place

okay for a second reading another 30 days all of the policies put before you

today are up for first read thirty two policies in total these

recommendations are revised policies come to us from mr. o'roarke he is the

North Carolina school board attorney and they are recommendations and suggestions

for review of the thirty two policies I can tell you that we pulled the

following because they required substantial change or were in conflict

with our current operations and therefore needed greater discussion and

revision the policies pulled our 1510 - 4200 - 72 70 17 20 - 40 15 - 72 25

policy 34 1034 20 34 70 - 4305 43 33 and 41 25 so a total of seven policies of a

total 32 mr. Rogers serves on our policy committee so he's aware of why we pulled

those but just just to give a brief overview of why those were pulled many

of those policies made reference to anonymous reporting an anonymous

reporting app which we do not have in place yet we did not want to put in

place policy that we do not have an app that it suggests we have the other is

credit recovery and how we go about credit recovery the requirements for

such and again we wanted a thorough look at that and the other was the homeless

liaison and duties of that homeless liaison so in those seven policies is

wording in regards to those three areas that we need to take a thorough look at

and revise be happy to entertain any questions you have

I just like to say it's a tremendous amount of work the policy committee does

and I know that I appreciate mr. Rogers work on that and bringing forward to the

board those revisions that need to be looked at carefully and I appreciate the

think that you are and I know they can be overwhelming at times so I appreciate

the hard work of the policy committee and please let them know that we do

appreciate it because I know that y'all meet on a regular basis and there's a

lot of work goes into that on the first reading policies that are listed will

table those as per board policy to for public input til the next regular board

meeting and then take action on 7510 is that correct

we've had the second reading of policy number 75 10 do I hear any action to be

taken make a motion we approve 7510 mr. chairman mr. Rogers has made a

motion mr. Jimmy Rogers made a motion do I hear second miss Barrett any

questions or discussion on the motion on the floor there being none we'll vote

all those in favor say aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously thank thank

you thank you thank you very much mr. chairman I like my comment I know that the

these policies like say a lot of these come they come through the NC School

Association and I did have a long talk with mr. O'Rourke I said you're making

us give you a lot of phone calls lately and there when we at the school

conference and he agreed he said because like I say these are written on a

statewide level so a lot of times they don't apply to our district necessarily

exactly and and it's there's a lot of wording that may not we may not have

systems in place to take care of that some districts do and but it's it's so

much easier than it used to be yeah back years ago when we were doing this it was

we didn't always get to study these are updated immediately

that's a every time there's a legislative amendment or action taken

these policies are updated effectively immediately and so we get them a lot

quicker and yet in case there is something that happens in the future

that we're on top of it this time so we know the

these are in place cover any anything that happens okay so thank you for very

good very good I just want to note that mr. Hent.. mr. Clark I had to leave you to

work requirements a requirement of him to be back at work so just wanted to

note that in on the recording of our meeting next we have our audit report

does miss Gardner want to say anything or about the audit report

I'm pleased with the audit report have a great staff they work very hard everyday to

support our personnel get them paid on time have a lot of good book keepers

then just appreciate all the help that we get very good earlier tonight the

board met and the work session and we were presented with our audit report

from mr. Wike and it's a very comprehensive document but I can tell

you cutting down to the chase if you only just say one word it was

outstandin and we have good hands in our finance department and I have

every confidence in in this report and our finance department that they're

doing a great job and mr. Wike concurred with that opinion as well as

the document itself and I like to commend again the finance officer and the

all of the folks worked in that department congratulations thank

you at this time we'll need to make a motion

to accept the audit report as presented make a motion that we accept auditor's

report as read okay miss Barrett's made the motion do I here second seconded mr.

Burnett any question or discussion on the motion on the floor

there being none will vote all those folks say aye aye opposed motion carries

unanimously

next let's see we were going to do building and grounds after finance so mr. Henson

finance met earlier today I have a couple things I make a motion to approve

an administrative assistant position for the associate superintendent okay

much-needed position okay we have a motion from the Finance Committee Chair

mr. Hensen do I hear second I'll second seconded mr. Francis any questions or

discussion on the motion on the floor there being none we'll vote all those in

favor say aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously

I didn't say aye so aye okay make the record state that

mr. Kirkpatrick did vote in the affirmative

sorry okay carry on next up is a motion to approve

the revised childhood nutrition procurement plan raising the small

purchase threshold from informal bidding from 30,000 to 90,000 okay we have a

motion from the Finance Committee Chair mr. Henson do I hear second I'll second

second mister francis I won't check on my parliamentary procedure but I

don't think you have to have a second from a recommend a we'll check on that

parliamentary procedure but anyway anyway because it's already been

approved really by three or four board members so it's not really necessary but

I'll check on that but that was brought to my attention a while back but anyway

we have a motion and a second on the floor any questions or discussion on the

motion on the floor and why are we doing this it brings the amount of money that

she can basically the the big difference is whether she has to get quotes to

quote or put that out for bids or still has to get three quotes and it still if

she should I ask you three quotes and it still has to be approved by the board

regardless of what it is because it's over a threshold but it's just raising

the amount of the threshold where she can determine to get quotes versus

thinking that putting that particular item out to bid and it also lines us up

with federal requirements a federal yes if it lines it back up whenever is

basically we passed earlier if it is my understanding the 30,000 was actually a

typo it should have been 90,000 was just my understanding and if this does bring

it back into the 90,000 with the federal we do that no other departments and yes

other under the it's the same thing we've got in other other departments

Is that clear as mud because I didn't when did we change the

things going out to bid it or anything from 30 to 90 miss Gardner

to explain it still wasn't explained miss Gardner our policies states yes

sir that's right mr. Kirkpatrick this is coming from the federal government's

uniform guidance it's code of federal regulation part 200 and so she has to

have those it's called the small purchase limits and so she's changing it

was originally 30,000 she's changing it to 90,000 the reason she's having to

change that in term in her plan is because much of her revenue comes from

the USDA which is federal funds however it's states very clearly in the planner

we talk about this in finance that this net the uniform guidance never

supersedes state regulation or local policy if either of the two or both are

more restrictive so in other words we've got I think it's policy 6424 contracted

services the board must approve everything at 30,000 and this does

not supersede this it does not and also it doesn't really have anything to do

with approval it just allows her to take informal bids up to 90,000 like she

recently if she needs to purchase a dishwasher which may cost 40,000 she can

take three informal bids or three quotes rather than putting that dishwasher out

to to bid but again it the biggest thing is it can never override anything

more restrictive from the state with a local board so even if it the dishwasher

get the three informal bids yes then she's still going to be bringing it back

to finance or the board for 40000 will approve that person who made that the

lowest bid she'll follow whatever our board our policy state I'm sorry I'm not

familiar with all of the policies and what they state that she will still

follow the policies for purchasing why not I Angie there's not about

20,000

well thank you that actually I mean bring down line knew she would be able

to explain because we have not changed our policy by no means there's no that

because that's one thing I kept up with the that 39 yes very and mr. Kirkpatrick

further every federal director in here mr. Heinz with his title 2 miss

Trantham with title one miss jackson with e-rate money all of us follow a

follow uniform guidance the North Carolina School Board Association wrote

us a procedure so it does not require board approval when those limits when

the federal government changes those limits but child nutrition at the DPI

level requires the board to approve the child nutrition plan thank you

very good now is that much clearer than what the mud was yes very good we have a

motion that's seconded you need further discussion questions there being none

we'll vote all those in favor say aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously

oh one more of the regular monthly finance reports look good and I'm making

a motion we approve okay we have a motion mr. Henson do I here second second

second of a mr. Kirkpatrick by about a tenth of a second any question or

discussion on the motion on the floor there being them will vote all those

in favor say aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously

spent from our local capital funds okay we have a motion from mr. Rogers do I

hear second second mr. Barnett has seconded the motion any questions or

discussion on the motion on the floor there being none we'll vote all those

in favor say aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously mr. chariman that is all we have

The Birth of Adventist Education | Episode 22 | Lineage - Duration: 4:50.

The Adventist Church was in its infancy with a membership that was only in the tens of thousands,

and yet it had already made ventures into the publishing work and the health work.

Despite a small membership, it would soon move into the educational field as well

with a vision far greater than the reality of church life at the time.

A school had started in 1868 by Goodloe Harper Bell that was supported locally here in Battle Creek.

But in 1872 James and Ellen White would call for the upgrading of this school

into an advanced educational institution, and also for the denomination to support the school.

[music]

As guidance for the school, Ellen White wrote Testimony for the Church Number 22,

where she developed the fundamental principle

of the correlation between the physical, mental, moral, and religious aspects of education.

The Bible was not to be just an elective option to study, but was to be infused throughout the whole curriculum,

eliminating the classics as the main thrust.

Initially the teachers and administrators struggled to implement what they probably didn't fully understand themselves.

As well as making the curriculum Bible-based, there was also the admonition to include a manual labor program.

[music]

Education was to move away from the Latin and Greek classics and be holistic, focusing on character development

and daily reminding the students of the obligation to God to live for Him and be missionaries wherever they were.

The focus on manual labor and missionary work is reflected in the early names of these schools:

The College of Medical Evangelists, Emmanuel Missionary College,

Southern Missionary College, Australasian Missionary College, and Oakwood Industrial School.

The purpose was for mission.

The name of the school reflected the purpose of the church: to train missionaries at home and abroad.

[music]

The vision to start a comprehensive educational system would mushroom and grow.

Education is such a key evangelistic strategy.

The places today where the church is stronger

have a strong Adventist educational system that is valued and supported by the members.

Education that recognizes it's not just for academic advancement but that is also evangelistic and redemptive,

echoing the words of Ellen White that education and redemption are one.

[music]

The work of education now encompasses the globe with the largest Protestant school system

but our strength lies not in our size but in our faithfulness

to the original purpose of setting up the educational school system.

Practical education with a clear mission focus

was the primary motivating factor rather than just academic excellence.

[music]

Many today do not have the opportunity to get an Adventist education.

If that is you, then may you be a witness in your school or university like the Waldensians in years gone by.

Proverbs says, 'Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.'

Whether it's at Sabbath school, home school, or Adventist school,

we see that education is vitally important in solidifying what we believe

as well as giving us the skills that we need in life.

If you live near a school, then support it.

Support the youth who are attending, whether it's financially,

through your prayers, by volunteering, by working, or in whatever way that you can.
