today HIQA has published draft national infection prevention and
control standards for community care services these standards applied to
services delivered in the community for example services provided by
public health nurses, community nurses, GP practices, ambulance services and nursing homes
these standards are draft because we want to hear the views of staff
working in these services and also the people using these services before we
finalise these standards
more and more complex care and services are being delivered outside the hospital setting
and as a result infections are no longer confined to hospital settings
they are becoming more and more common in community care settings
infections can have a huge impact on people these standards
describe what is required to prevent and control infection in order to provide
safe care in a clean environment
antimicrobial stewardship is about ensuring that every person receives
the right medicine for the right infection type
at the right time everyone who prescribes, dispenses,
administers, uses and disposes of antimicrobial medication should promote
and monitor the appropriate use of antibiotics
community care services are a broad range of services that are provided
outside of the hospital setting including GP's and public health nurses
social care, mental health and health and well-being services
the standards emphasise that infection prevention and control is everybody's responsibility
many infections are avoidable
the standards say that good infection prevention control practices
such as ensuring that hands, equipment,
and the care environment are kept clean reduce the risk of people acquiring an
infection
the standards provide a consistent understanding of what needs to be in
place in health and social care services in the community to prevent and control
the spread of infections
we are currently holding a six-week public consultation on the draft standards
it is very important that we receive feedback from staff working in
community health and social care services and people who use these services
if you would like to take part in this public consultation you can go
to the HIQA website which is WWW.HIQA.IE
we look forward to hearing from you
