Adolescent Education in 60 Seconds - Duration: 1:08.

When you think about those teachers you've had who really identified something special

in you or were patient with you or were strict, right, and really held you to high expectations

Those people worked really hard for you

And when we try to think about students, they live incredibly complex lives, as you know,

because you're living them

Families are complicated in the best of circumstances

Friends are complicated

Social media is complicated

The world we live in is complicated and sometimes scary

Teachers really have the power to help kids navigate that and think through that and not

just, kind of throw up our hands and say, "Well, there's nothing I can do."

If we think about teaching as making decisions and harnessing power and directing students'

interests and energy into really positive avenues

If you're thinking about, "What am I gonna do with the rest of my life?"

as you may be.

Thinking about, "How do I help other people live their best lives and make positive change

in areas that they've identified as important?" I think that's really cool

It's a lot of work and there's a lot of bureaucracy and I don't know anybody in

any field who doesn't deal with that.

But at the end of the day, I can't think of anything else I'd rather do

Unleash your curiosity with the Center for Global Education at Gettysburg College - Duration: 1:50.

I had no Chinese language experience prior, so

I was going in there as blind as you could.

I would be able to be the first student to go to Senegal from Gettysburg.

I'm from California, I used to kind of go camping like not really

and camping started like as soon as we got there.

I spent my fall in Shanghai.

I studied abroad in Dakar, Senegal.

and I studied abroad in Tanzania, Africa.

I did get to go up to see the Great Wall of China.

So I got to sit down on a woman's club evening

for the village that I was in, Gingenao.

I slept outside on a cowhide just there in the wilderness.

I was appreciating some of the subtle nuances and small advantages of an

alternative economic system, political system.

Talking to these real people

who have these issues and also like still want so much for other people and

the kindness and the welcoming that I was given while I was there

are definitely one of the things that I'll always remember.

There's a tendency to view Africa it's like a very homogenous place but it's massive and so

many different cultures and diasporas, you know I never really thought about that before I went.

Inclusive Childhood Education in 60 Seconds - Duration: 1:07.

We are a project-based program and what that

means is we don't give tests, we give projects

We want to see if you can apply what you're learning

So it's not about knowing this or that vocab word

It's about how can you,

if you have real students in front of you

how do you apply what you're learning

You have two student teaching placements

One in an urban area and one in a suburban or rural area

We try to put you in those two placements

one so that you are in a diverse population

one so that you can understand the

different needs of different students

There is 100 hours of field work that students do

prior to student teaching, prior to graduating

They also do an internship which is worth 80 to 120 hours

So that's 220 hours, plus a

whole semester of student teaching

prior to going out and getting a job

So they have a lot of experience with lots

of different things: Teaching, management,

all of those things in the education field,

that really sets them up for success

Exploring the Design of Audio-Kinetic Graphics for Education - Duration: 2:14.

WeeGee is a prototype for creating and experiencing audio-kinetic graphics. Audio-kinetic graphics are non-visual

representations of graphical content that combine audio narration with kinetic movement and are a means to create accessible educational content.

In our prototype

the user holds the stylus of a pen plotter which moves in two dimensional space providing a proprioceptive sense of motion.

We can show various content by drawing in space.

For example, we can demonstrate the physics of standing waves.

"If you confine this wave into a medium that has

boundaries, this wave is gonna reflect when it meets the boundary and that means it's gonna

overlap with itself and when this happens you can create something that are called standing waves."

Audio-kinetic graphics can represent non-visual information such as pointing at a specific location or

moving the users hand to a specific point. "And by the way this point over here

we're basically making sure that it has no motion.

So by nailing it down what I really mean is that there's gonna be no motion at this end point and no motion at this end point."

This type of interaction is a key part of whiteboard sketch-driven education common in stem classes and online education

videos such as those of Khan Academy.

Audio-kinetic graphics can show static tactile information by drawing shapes in space but can also represent moving information.

The primary method for authoring audio-kinetic graphics is through pen input using a touchscreen device and stylus such as a Microsoft Surface tablet

WeeGee's authoring tool takes the appearance of a blank page on which the author can sketch out shapes.

Sketches are recorded alongside audio to create audio-kinetic graphics.

We begin a recording and draw strokes into the window using the stylus.

We can add narration or recorded audio from another source such as a pre-recorded video lecture.

WeeGee's authoring tool is meant to follow what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) principles.
