the most important thing that could change education is reframing what it

means to be educated. I've had the opportunity to ask hundreds of people

about their education and perhaps the most disheartening experience that

sticks with me is asking a woman in her mid 50s tell me about your education. Her

response? Oh I'm not educated, I didn't go to

University. Like attending University 30 years prior at this point is in any way

relevant to what it means to be an educated person, it isn't. And yet, that is

how we define what it is to be educated. Think if I were to ask you tell me about

your health and you told me that you ran a marathon 30 years ago. That is an

absurd response to that question just as it's an absurd response to tell me where

you went to University but we've been so conditioned that we don't hear it. Now we

don't want nor should we do away with College, University, Community College the

pathways that we've established that's not what this is about but what we need

is to reframe the equation of what it means to be educated if we want to

unlock human potential that we're losing out on right now we need to redefine

what it means to be educated because education and learning is something that

is an ongoing lifelong pursuit not something that we did once and then

defines us forever.

South Valley Integrated Teacher Education Program - Duration: 2:55.

The integrated teacher education program is an accelerated pathway from entering

college to graduating with your bachelor's degree and your multiple

subject teaching credential in just four years in our ITEP program. They would

then begin their college career at one of our community college partners, that's

either Porterville College, College of the Sequoias, or West Hills College

Lemoore, and complete their first two years there. Then transfer to us at the

South Valley ITEP which all of their coursework is going to take place at the

Fresno State Visalia campus. Many of them are non-traditional students that

have families, that have other obligations that they need to be closer

to home to be able to attend to. And so we value that richness of experience

that they bring to the program because we know they're going to be highly

committed teachers when they enter in the classroom.

I didn't even start going

back to college until I was 27 because I was a stay at home mom with three kids

and I felt like I had a knack for it and so I was looking for a way to get into a

classroom I had no idea where to start. Started doing research and made my way

to COS and then decided from there that this would be the easiest way to get to

the classroom because you do it quick and you are with the same people the

whole time and it's pretty convenient.

One of the things that we wanted to

provide is a local solution to the teacher shortage, you know we anticipate

the need for several hundred new teachers every year in the South Valley.

The main focus of my position is teacher recruitment. It's nice to have a program

that is going to produce teachers here in our in our Valley. I know the program

will grow and increase the numbers. We hire 150 plus teachers every

year and so we have to go to Fresno State and different areas to make that

happen, so it's nice at Fresno State is it's bringing this program here locally

for us to keep our local kids at home and give us an opportunity to hire them.

So it will help tremendously.

I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher.

I think that teachers are so important to the community. I think they're so

important to children in their lives and they create such a huge impact on kids.

And I chose the ITEP program because it gets you into the classroom much faster

than if you were to go to Fresno State's main campus.

Leading the classroom and

seeing kids reach their milestones and learning and being able to be the

stability in a child's life, that may not have much stability,

maybe school is the only thing that they know that's stable and that's

comfortable and that's warm in their life. And if I could be that to one kid

that makes everything worth it.

Alexandra Porutiu - EDSP 355B Sec 05 6962 Coll Model Inclusive Education - Duration: 2:53.

Hello, my name is Alexandra Porutiu. I am enrolled in the single subject

teaching credential at Cal State Long Beach. Some fun facts about

me, I love to dance whether it's salsa, bachata, or

hip-hop I absolutely love getting on the dance floor. It melts away all my stress

and worries. I also love to travel and learn new languages. My perception of a

good online class would be just really clear instructions and directions on all of

the due dates and assignments and then videos and media are really helpful

to stay engaged and to really participate with the material. Regarding

the video response to the module web materials from the video one

I learned that there will be quizzes every month so make sure to read the

articles and keep up with all the readings and videos and then also I

learned that this course will help prepare future teachers to work

with learners with disabilities and people from really diverse backgrounds

so I'm really looking forward to learning the material and being able to

engage with people from all walks of life. From video number two I learned

that the 13 disability categories are autism, deaf blindness, deafness, emotional

disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, multiple

disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning

disability, speech / language impediment, traumatic brain injury and

impairment. Regarding video three and four I learned that the eligibility

rules for special education services are number one, documented

disability and number two, adverse or negative impact on the school

performance. Furthermore, the two common issues associated with adolescents and

disabilities number one an example would be difficulty participating in social

activities with peers which can lead to isolation and feelings of loneliness and

then number two, an increase in the risk of developing co-morbid disorders like

anxiety or depression. Regarding the Bateman and Kline article,

why is people first language important, number one, people first language

emphasizes a person not the disability therefore it is not the defining

characteristic of an individual and it doesn't limit the individual to their

disability. And then number two, it also helps to eliminate generalizations and

stereotypes by focusing on the person and their many characteristics of

who they are. Thank you so much!

Advantages of BOCES Career Technical Education Programs - Duration: 1:59.

(JILL SLAVNY) HELLO I'M JILL SLAVNY, I'M THE EXECUTIVE PRINCIPLE HERE AT MONROE 2-ORLEANS

BOCES CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

SO BOCES IS A COLLABORATION OF A GROUP OF DISTRICTS WHERE THEY CAN PULL THEIR RESOURCES

IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO OFFER STUDENTS MORE OPPORTUNITIES.

SO INSTEAD OF EVERY ONE OF OUR DISTRICTS TRYING TO OFFER AUTO TECHNOLOGY, AUTO BODY, CULINARY

ARTS, MACHINING, THEY PULL THEIR RESOURCES SO THAT IF THEY ONLY HAVE ONE STUDENT INTERESTED

THEY SEND THEM TO OUR CENTER, IF THEY HAVE TEN THEY CAN SEND THEM HERE.

THE INDUSTRIES HAVE CHANGED, THE ECONOMY HAS EVOLVED AND THERE ARE VERY FEW HIGH PAYING

LOW SKILLED JOBS.

SKILLS THAT ARE LOW COMPLEXITY WHERE YOU'RE DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN THOSE

DON'T EXIST LIKE THEY USED TO SO IT REQUIRES A MUCH STRONGER EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AND

STRONGER SKILL SET IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

EVEN IN WHAT PEOPLE CALL ENTRY LEVEL JOBS.

STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE TO GO RIGHT INTO CAREER FIELDS RIGHT OUT OF OUR CENTER OR THEY'LL

PURSUE 2 OR 4 YEAR DEGREES, THERE ARE NO LIMITS, THIS IS SOMETHING EVERY STUDENT SHOULD CONSIDER.

OUR STRONGEST STUDENTS GO RIGHT INTO THE INDUSTRY.

BECAUSE THEY CAME IN WITH ROCK SOLID ACADEMICS, A WORK ETHIC, AND THE ABILITY TO KIND OF JUST

ABSORB THE SKILL SET WHILE THEY'RE HERE.

SO THEY'LL GET EMPLOYED BEFORE THEY EVEN GRADUATE AND THEN THEIR EMPLOYER IS SENDING

THEM ON TO POST-SECONDARY.

SO THEY'RE NOT STOPPING THEIR EDUCATION IT'S JUST THAT THEY'RE FUNDING IT THROUGH

A DIFFERENT MEANS.

AND SO THAT'S WHY I SAY THOSE OUR BIGGEST SUCCESS STORIES, THOSE STUDENTS WHO CO-OP

WHILE THEY'RE SENIORS HERE, IN OTHER WORDS THEY ARE BEING PAID TO WORK IN THE INDUSTRY

DURING THE SCHOOL DAY WHILE THEY'RE WITH US AND THEY'RE IN SENIOR YEAR IN THE SECOND

HALF OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR.

AND IF THEIR OFFERED A JOB THEY'LL GO RIGHT INTO THEIR INDUSTRY, BUT THEIR EMPLOYER HAS

ALREADY STARTED CONVERSATION WITH THEM ABOUT WE WILL SEND YOU TO, AND THEY'LL HAVE IT

FUNDED BY THEIR EMPLOYER.

SO THAT'S WITH THE COST OF EDUCATION THAT'S A HUGE WIN FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THERE IS A LOCAL BOCES FOR EVERY SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK.

THERE ARE 37 BOCES ACROSS THE STATE.

AND THE BEST THING FOR STUDENTS TO DO IS GO TO THEIR SCHOOL COUNSELOR.

THE COUNSELORS WILL HELP THEM DECIDE.

THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED TO STUDENTS WHEN THEIR JUNIORS.

THERE ARE NO LIMITS REALLY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT EVERY STUDENT SHOULD CONSIDER.

StartEdUp Foundation Crisis in Education System - Duration: 1:47.

You know, there is a crisis going on in our country

right now and that is a lot of our students

are reporting record rates of anxiety, depression, suicide.

And while we're talking about it,

we're not necessarily looking at the root cause of why.

I think I know why.

Number one, the pressure of social media is very high,

and we get that.

But also just the pressure to succeed is insanely high.

And here's where we have two opposing forces.

We have now the world telling our students

hey, do things you love.

Find out what your passion is.

Take risks now.

But where do you find that in your modern education?

It's usually absent.

Meanwhile, those kids that are different,

those kids that are fundamentally more entrepreneurial,

more creative, they've been kind of

beaten down by subservience.

They've been beaten down with all hail

the SAT and the state tests.

What we're wanting to do is at StartUpEd

is reach those kids, reach those families

to be able to provide that space and time to say hey,

this is the place where you look for opportunities.

This is place where you go with some of the things

that you're passionate about and you double down

on your strengths.

This is a place where we're going to

encourage them to network with each other

and almost find a home with one another.

I think some of our students that are

naturally entrepreneurial have been felt like

they've been outcasted.

I think that they've been feeling like

they're the different ones.

Yet, ironically, now the world is begging

for more of these risk takers.

They're begging for more of these disrupters.

I think that is why at StartEdUp we're meeting

more of these kids to find the home here,

not to have some sort of improvement on how

to get a better test score,

but to start looking for new opportunities

within our community.

Learn About Digital Badging with Continuing and Professional Education - Duration: 2:57.

- As individuals work longer in their careers,

as technology and the dimensions around the workplace

changes at a much more rapid pace than in prior years,

we've recognized that individuals will be working longer.

They'll be working in maybe five or six different careers,

not jobs.

And in order to make these transitions,

individuals will need to display that they have

the competencies, the skills,

and the capabilities to succeed.

So what we have adopted here at our

Continuing and Professional Education Unit

at Montclair State University is the concept

of electronic badges.

Electronic badges are a credential.

They have the same level of integrity

that one would expect getting from

a traditional higher education institution.

However, they're not as rigorous as an academic.

They're not meant to be as rigorous.

But they're more practical skills oriented.

What an individual would be able to do with the badge,

and what employers are looking for from individuals

as they look to see what skills an individual

professional might be able to bring to a particular position

is a very descriptive list of capabilities and skills.

The electronic badges that we have

will have listed very clearly the skills and competencies

that an individual will have developed

in our certificate programs,

such that an employer in looking at an individual's resume

will have extra information that shows

what an individual's capable of doing.

Especially if an individual may have received

an undergraduate degree in one particular area,

and now has moved three careers away.

What it also does for an employer is it shows

that an individual is making an investment in themselves,

and as an employer I certainly would be much more prone

to hire an individual who has taken the initiative

to make an investment in themself as somebody

who I think would be willing to come to my organization

and do the same thing for me.

So they really are a great way to,

for the individual to help them to skill up rather quickly,

and for an organization who is looking to hire

individuals a way to see what particular and specific

skills and capabilities an individual has, number one,

and number two, in a less direct way it shows employers

that those individuals who are willing to invest

in their own skills and development of their skills

as an employee is probably gonna have the grit,

the motivation, and the initiative

to work well for them as well.

Montclair State University Launches New Continuing and Professional Education Unit (CAPE) - Duration: 2:21.

- Yes my name is Dr. Peter McAliney,

I'm the executive director of the Continuing and

Professional Education Unit at Montclair State University.

We're very excited to be rolling out our new

Continuing and Professional Education Unit.

With the addition of offerings

in the non-credit as well as credit bearing space.

We've got a pretty robust portfolio currently of online

credit bearing offerings, however with the addition

of the non-credit credential bearing offerings,

we're opening up a number of venues that we

previously have not been able to service our community.

For example, we have online and in person as well as hybrid

short duration courses, short duration certificates,

and these are designed for working professionals,

for members of the community and for adults who

have a passion to learn something that they

might be more interested in learning about.

The goals of the CAPE unit are really to serve the people

and the companies and the non-profit organizations

in the state of New Jersey and surrounding areas.

We have a focus on working adults,

we have a focus on traditional students,

non traditional students, we really looking

to provide individuals with 21st century work skills

that will enable them to contribute

to the economy of New Jersey, which in turn

will benefit the community for which we all live.

The programs are intended for individuals who

could potentially be underemployed currently,

for career changes, and for individuals who really want

to enhance a set of what we call new collar skills,

which is a combination of both technical skills

as well as what we traditionally call soft skills.

Many of the careers that we're seeing today

do have a combination of these, and our programs

are designed to make sure that we address

both the technical as well as the human dynamic

side of the careers that we're training our folks for.
