Here we are with the Yamaha MT10

live at the Heads.

The ultimate naked bike from Japan!

The optics is very special.

My first impression was:

We two will not be friends

For me it was too weird. <> My first question was:

Autobot? Or Decepticon?

But definitely a Transformer!

The look? I find superhot!

So really mega!

Right away back at home I checked out the Transformers movies.

I love it! <> I took me some time to get used to it.

But what finally convinced me:

It is a stock bike but it still has a kind of #MainStreamSucks look!

The front is so damned special.

And Yamaha accepted that it will not please everyone

but that it will be loved by those who want something special.

And because of that I started to like this bike.

It's different! <> That was also the feeling of our customers:

Love it or hate it!

And then there are those that hate it first time,

like you, and then changed their view. <> You have to give it a chance.

Meanwhile I also really like the style!

OK! Cool style or not - this bike has more to offer.

It's the top naked bike from Yamaha and is based on to very many parts by the R1

60% of the engine is based on the R1

40% is brandnew.

We've got 160 hp at 11.500 rpm,

and 111Nm torque at 9.000 rpm.

The weight is 210 kg fully fueled. It has traction control in three selections

and you can turn it also off. You've got ABS

and the selection of three different engine modes.

Traction control seems to be standard in stock bikes today, isn't it?

TC in a street naked bike. That's quite cool.

Yes, but it definitely makes sense. The engine power is a little bit downforced

to the R1 but it still has a lot of punch! <> The Big Bang engine is also special.

The crankshaft journals are to be 90 °

Degrees apart, that is like a V8 engine, that has eight pistons on a

crankshaft, only four left out!

And that makes a very unique sound!

That's damned great!! Really awesome! <> When Obi, so our Obi

is so emotional, then there really must be something to it! And that IS it too!

Normally a 4 zylinder engine isn't very spectacular or charismatic.

A V2 is a hammer with the sound.

A three-cylinder is snotty ...

The series of four you'll get with a hot pot, have to scream ...

BUT these cross-plane number here <> This is soo pithy ...!

Oh wait, I'll never forget...

Short memory...

Ben Spieß nails with the R1 through the Royal Park of Monza in 2009 and I

Sitting watching TV and I think to myself ...

What the F *** k! The thing has roared so ... unbelievable!

And this basic idea of the engine is in this bike 'till today.

And who has brought once the ear in the vicinity

when the throttle is full opened... hell ... hell ...!

<> Of course we drove it over our home tracks.

Jens took first our Project X and I the MT-10 and my conclusion was:

Will never give this bike back to Yamaha!

It has a wheelbase of 1400mm. For comparison the MT-09

has 1440 mm!

That is 40 mm that the MT-10 has less than the MT-09!

The wheelbase is shorter than in the small MT-09

This will, of course, very handy! An absolute curve eaters!

<> Visually, it looks not like!

If you take place behind the HUGE tank

and the massively handlebar with all the switches and stuff

it doesn't feel like to ride maneuverable

But as soon as it starts to move it feels like riding a bycicle with a massive punch

You surf from one corner to the next

and if you just go straight ahead - what normally is kind of boring on a bike - it makes

so much fun just to open and close the throttle. Wraaaaap!

Just for fun.

Again and again...

<> And this robust sound! <>

Yeah, that's funny! And if you put your money for it on the counter

You'll get fully serviced!

Nevertheless ... we all time need a little bit tune up.

<> It is and remains so still a Production vehicle <> Exactly

There's alltime space to beautify and

and optimize a bike.

First part we had to change: the exhaust

With put a beautiful and high quality

Remus HyperCone Exhaust on the bike.

In addition, a totally horny

Rearset by Lightech

Very special about the Lightech rearsets is

that the adjustment is so easy to handle.

By adjusting just one screw!

As with the brake handle front here

also adjustment with just one screw!

This is an ideal solution.

And so simple ... I really like!

<> Yes, definitely great stuff by the Lightech crew.

the catches, for example

Killer Grip!

The whole thing is with folding mechanism,

if something stupid happens.

The feel of the surface of the material ...

because you realize these are Italians,

with loving attention to detail and style!

In addition to the rearsets, we have also

put some highend chain adjusters on? Hey Obi, what's the right description of these parts?

'' I would say that's...

to adjust the chain tension in quick!?!

<> So I would say ... horny shit

Yes, massively beautiful!

That comes as Lightech.

So we have Crash pads still indulged.

Those things make less sense,

if you fire with 200km / h in the corner,

because you have other things to worry!

These crash pads do not only make sense with MT-10 but also in

other models!

For example if something stupid happens like

...crashing while cruising through the streets or moving the bike in front of your garage.

So Lightech has

a HUGE assortment not just for the MT10.

We have pulled us two or three parts.

We have already more often Lightech worked.

We also know the other stuff.

What also a really nice part is,

the plate holder!

The original, which we have here isn't hot stuff...

so throw it away.

I'm sure also Yamaha & Co. knowes that this is one of the first parts

the owners kick away.

The Lightech alternative is high quality

material that looks stylish.

So then gets a filigree rear.

We treated ourselves: The Lightech things.

Take a look on the Lightech web side

they've got hot stuff for nearly every current bike.

And as I stand already at the next part!

We treated ourselves to a new seat!

The stock seat isn't really a bad part

and seating comfort is OK, but there's still a chance to optimize.

<> The cool thing with this is that we

just changed the seat cover.

this is from...

Whats the name of the company?

<> Luimoto, the guys are from Canada!

<> And they take series motorcycles

and watching how the lines are.

Then they take the lines on

and give back in the style of their seat cover.

On the homepage you can you still pick and choose different materials.

<> Also different colors you can choose?

<> Yes, and there are pre-prepared covers

or you can design it nearly completely by yourself.

And you also can embroider something?

<> Yes, you can embroider logo, name or something else.

This is really very cool!

Like you say, I think that is great.

There are people at work

that really have fun on motorcycles

So by this way a "normal" seat becomes a real style part of your bike.

And it's quite easy.

You just put the old cover away and put the new stylish cover on it.

... And Obi ... this funny guy... just gave me tools and told me

"I've very important things to do by the moment. So do it by yourselve!!"

So I thought that was very brave!

but shows ...

It's really done by me and I'm definitely no mechanic!

... but shows that it's not rocket science! And you actually use

relatively little effort and manageable financial commitment

to get a really cool seat!

Take a look at the Luimoto webside

they offer seat covers and solutions for nearly each motorcycle.

We really love and we'll try the stuff next time again!

Last but not least, you have already mentioned it - the Remus Hypercone Exhaust.

We went to the Dynometer by our friend Armand Mottier from Micron Systems

to test it.

Better? Worse?

Black frame, black rocker, nice matte black exhaust with carbon end cap

Perfect. <> The shape of this Remus HyperCone fits Mega for MT10 style.

With all the edges it's exactly the Remus number. If you did not know it,

one would say that this has ever been so. The sound is sonorous

and more charismatic.

And also your neighbour wouldn't hate you,

when you start your bike on Sunday morning.

The sound is clear snotty,

strong, but everything street legal <> Here again for comparison

the original part isn't mega-ugly but it's just ...

<> You could live with it, but...

Let's take a look at the electronics.

We mentioned at the beginning, that we are fully equipped with hightech.

Here we see the motor mode so you can set the response during acceleration.

Since we can choose between A, B, and standard.

Using standard smootheste the response is,

comes after A, a little sportier.

and B, pretty athletic hanging on gas.

The traction control system is over here,

we can also have three regulate levels. Where 1, is the mode,

Traction Control least in the engaged. Then we have the stages 2 & 3.

The traction control can be turn off. I find quite nice.

ABS cannot turned off. What do we still have?

Cruise control!

There is nothing more to say! Everything is onboard.

Yes, and I must say, when driving ... <> All off! :-)

The tire must block! <> No, but ou can perfectly ride with TC 1 and

I know no reason why you should be turning into mode 2 or 3.

The TC 1 is the sportiest. <> There are certainly

reasons for two and three but... I just do not know ...

<> ... rain ...?

Maybe?! <>These motor modes, as you said, which are the other way around as in the MT09.

Exactly, it starts with the standard mode, which is

the gentlest. A is sportier

the mode B is the sportiest because it depends really crisp on the gas.

Unlike as in the MT09 <> Just as there was A, the sportiest version,

Standard somehow in between and then B.

Beautiful confuse people! Yamaha, You are doing well :-)

So everyone needs time to read the manual! I did it again not done :-) I have the Obi ...

He's told me :-) Unfortunately, only after I had lost five traffic starts.

I would describe myself as a sporty dedicated driver. Jens is more of a needle full elapsed-Racer.

I'm on the bike increased and was incredibly impressed,

of the chassis. The MT 10 has complete suspension of the R1!

This is fully adjustable! we come to the fork.

Here we have rebound, compression and spring preload, all adjustable from above.

I need to set nothing for me on the chassis.

I am now 183 large and have great space on the bike.

The chassis just works great!

This cornering you swing by one curve to another.

It almost like sailing, sporty sailing!

I'm more so felt like a Gyroscope Camera in the Moto GP!

So kind of funny, the vehicle is moving under you, right - left - Zack! But you're sitting

up there on it and enthroned on things!

It makes total mega mood and conveys an incredible trust in God!

That's impressive! Of course, we also have a

Mezeler M7RR raised, which is THE hottest tires currently!

I feel great on that tire.

The standard has assembled works.

But the Metzeler M7RR is currently one of the best tires for this job!

If you didn't drive it so far, check out,

The M7RR You've got to try!

Short for Project X

The wingman with the MT10 in this test, who are brothers in spirit,

The basis is a FZ1 Yamaha from 2006

A Fazer with a lot off plastics on the front. <> A so called "bread and butter bike"

That's still from another time by Yamaha, when they want to be fine with everybody

not as charismatic as a MT-10 today

This is one of the reasons why we

have choose this Fazer: Come on, let's make a charismatic naked bike with it!

Actually, the idea was to show that it is also with the bread and

Butter Bike create a cool bike

and also relatively inexpensive.

Priced the two now are close to each other. Here you have a completely

unique motorcycle.

With the MT10 you have a stock bike that differentiates itself through the optics, far from

the others and the engine characteristics not to forget!

There will be more information of the Project X coming soon

and also a video on our youtube channel will follow.

More information to this project also on our webside

www.triplespeed.de

We're really a little bit sad of giving the bike back to Yamaha

and maybe we'll do something more with this bike.

So you have to stay tuned!

And stay tuned you must also

because this colleague ... the rat here... was at legendary Mugello!

What did he do there?

He was racing the R1M!!!

... AND with whom he was allowed to drive the R 1 M ???

Not that I would be jealous or something ...!

With the...? <> Mr Alex Gramigni !!

Ex 125cc World Champion!

Thanks Pirelli that we also had a look at the all-new Superbike Slick,

... on ... R1M in Mugello ... at 38 ° C

<> Then he comes back, took place on the MT 10 and says:

There is almost no difference!?! <> There is just a bit cooler with us :-)

... Obi ... have nothing missed in Mugello ... but driving MT10!

Is exactly the same ... with R1 engine !! <> ... Also ...

That's how it is! <> Horny number !!

So, there is something else!

Therefore, stay tuned!

See you. <> Bye!

GIAPPONE: I PREPARATIVI /JAPAN: LET'S START | Travel Duo - Duration: 7:42.

Hello everyone and welcome to this first video of the Japan series.

Last spring we visited the land of the Rising Sun

during the fascinating period of cherry blossom.

Since it was our first intercontinental journey,

either for the little experience and the desire to see and experience as much as possible,

the planning phase took a few months of time and many intense study sessions.

Don't worry!

Japan is a destination that, especially in recent years,

attracts more travelers,

so it will not be difficult to find the necessary information

and schedule your itinerary even without the help of organized agencies and tours.

We planned it all with two sources:

the Lonely Planet guide

and the blog of Marco Togni,

an Italian guy who has been living in Japan for years.

His blog, of which you can find the link in the infobox down below,

is a real maze of useful, straightforward information

and tips about this beautiful country.

By subscribing to its newsletter,

you can also download for free a pdf guide

that you can save on tablet, smartphone or Kindle and always bring with you.

The Lonely Planet guide does not need many presentations.

It is probably one of the most complete around,

although it is not rich in iconographic views.

Google will fix it all with loads of images and pictures.

We have used it so much for everything that concerns sites of interest,

museums, timetables, transportation and some restaurants,

without giving importance to the part of the accommodation.

We'll talk about that in another video.

For this trip, having about 12/13 days of time, flights excluded,

we chose a rather classic itinerary,

going to Tokyo and Osaka as base cities

and organizing days in Kyoto, Nara, Hirmoshima,

Mijayima, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and Kamakura.

Moving in Japan is extremely easy,

the means of transport are punctual

to the second

and the high speed of shinkansen

will allow you to reach long distance cities in very short amount of time.

To this subject we are going to dedicate a separate video

to be more complete and detailed,

so for now we do not get into it.

In the end, we want to share with you some of well-tried tips:

1. Buy an universal adapter;

the Japanese electrical outlets are different from those we are accustomed to and an accessory of this kind is at least indispensable;

you can find it on Amazon for a few Euros

(we'll leave you below the link of the product we bought);

it worked well and we've been able to recharge mobile phones and devices with no problem at all;

they are very technological and in the rooms you can find also many USB outputs for your devices.

2. Before departing, in addition to buying flight tickets,

we recommend you to buy a travel insurance

that covers not only your luggage and any flight delays,

but also and above all the health aspect,

as medical performance in Japan have really high prices;

we also recommend you to pre-order the Japan Rail Pass

(if you plan to move between different cities, so not just stay in Tokyo),

and we will dedicate a separate video to it;

3. Do not forget the pocket Wi-Fi, indispensable in Japan;

this is a small portable Wi-Fi modem for hire

that you can connect to one or more devices;

the cost varies depending on the rental period and the type of Wi-Fi pocket you want.

Below we leave the website link from which we booked it.

Choose your model, select the rental period, pay,

print the receipt and, once you arrive at the airport,

go to the dedicated corner to retire it.

If you want, you can also make it easily shipped to your hotel.

At the end of your stay you will have to return it. Simple and useful!

I think it is all for this first video,

we'll see you on the next one

where we'll share with you some tricks to buy airline tickets

at the best price as we did!

See you in the next video!

Google weaves touch controls into Levi Strauss jacket

A team from Googles Project Jacquard, seen in 2015, have developed fabric with special threads which can be used for connected clothing, including a Levis jacket set to debut Photo: AFP/File.

Levi Strauss this week begins selling a denim jacket with touch controls woven into the fabric in the first fashion offering stitched from a collaboration with Google.

The iconic California clothing maker, which has a legacy reaching back to Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, will mine the mobile internet boom with a Trucker Jacket with Jacquard.

The denim jacket aimed at bicyclists has a sleeve cuff made of special Jacquard fabric that synchronizes wirelessly with smartphones, enabling a limited set of commands using swipes or taps, a video posted at YouTube by Levi Strauss showed.

As we see it, this isnt just about technology for technologys sake – its about addressing a real need for our consumers on the go, said Levi vice president of global product innovation Paul Dillinger.

This garment allows cyclists to literally navigate their rides, and manage other simple tasks, while never having to take their eyes off the road. Google engineer Ivan Poupyrev said in a blog post that first and foremost, its a jacket.

Like any regular denim jacket, you can wash it (just remove the snap tag), its durable, designed to be comfortable for cycling and itll keep you warm on and off the bike..

Poupyrev said the garment enables users to perform common digital tasks -- like starting or stopping music, getting directions or reading incoming text messages -- by simply swiping or tapping the jacket sleeve.

The Levis Commuter Trucker jackets will be priced at $350 when then become available in select U.S. shops beginning Wednesday and at the levi.com website on October 2.

Slightly more than two years ago, Google used its annual developers conference in San Francisco to reveal Project Jacquard and to spotlight Levi Strauss as its first partner.

Named after a Frenchman who invented a type of loom, Project Jacquard is in the hands of a small Google team called Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP).

Conductive threads can be woven into a wide array of fabrics, and be made to visually stand out or go unnoticed depending on designers wishes.

Google looking to help news outlets win subscribers

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai has made a priority of investing in artificial intelligence, and has spoken publicly about infusing the companys array of offerings with software smarts Photo: GETTY/AFP/File.

Google is seeking ways to help publishers win paying subscribers for news stories, a person close to the matter told AFP.

To this end, the U.S. internet giant is collaborating with NewsCorp, the Financial Times, and the New York Times, according to the source.

Google was said to be ramping up its support for subscription services in recognition of the fact that such revenue is vital for publishers who cant rely on advertising alone for financial survival.

Google declined to comment on word of this latest effort.

We work closely with news publishers across the world to build products that help support their business and add value to users, Google spokesperson Maggie Shiels said in response to an AFP inquiry. At the moment we dont have anything to announce.

Google already uses its technology to let readers of online news subscribe to publishers with a single click, in an internet age spin on tossing a free copy of a newspaper on a doorstep in the hope people sign-up for daily deliveries.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai has made a priority of investing in artificial intelligence, and has spoken publicly about infusing the companys array of offerings with software smarts.

Artificial intelligence could be combined with troves of data at Google to try to better win over potential news subscribers. Publishers have complained at times that Google is making money off their work by surfacing stories in search results.

Google has countered that it shares revenue with publishers, drives traffic to their websites where stories are hosted, and that they can opt not to show up in search results.

The need to support reliable news organizations has been highlighted by controversy over bogus stories crafted to influence politics, promote social division, or simply rake in online ad revenue.

Debate swirls as power of U.S. tech giants grows |Japan Trending - Duration: 7:03.

Debate swirls as power of U.S. tech giants grows

Google has faced more scrutiny from antitrust regulators in Europe than in the United States Photo: AFP/File. With a handful of U.S. technology giants growing more powerful and dominant, debate is intensifying on whether big techs growth is healthy or not.

Over the past few years, Apple, Google parent Alphabet, Facebook and Amazon have become among the worlds most valuable companies.

Along with stalwarts like Microsoft and rising stars like Netflix, the tech firms exercise enormous control over what people see and how they live.

Increasingly, policymakers and others have begun to consider breaking up or regulating the biggest technology companies, although imminent action appears unlikely.

While many consumers welcome innovation from the tech sector, critics have complained about the power of gatekeepers of information and other content. Google holds around 90 percent of the internet search market in the United States and Europe.

Facebook and Google scoop up some 60 percent of digital ad revenues and are eating up 90 percent of new ad growth in the United States.

Googles Android and Apples iOS power the overwhelming majority of mobile devices. Amazon accounts for nearly half of U.S. online sales and is expanding into new sectors.

Barry Lynn, executive director of the Open Markets Institute, said three firms -- Google, Facebook and Amazon -- have more power than any previous monopolies weve dealt with in the past century.

We have to be incredibly concerned about the power of Facebook, Google and Amazon, said Lynn, who launched his research center last month after his team was ousted from the Google-funded New America Foundation.

They have their hands on the flow of news, the flow of books and they are manipulating that flow in a conscious way to promote their interests.

Even though the idea of taking on the tech giants appears extreme, the upheaval in U.S. politics over the past year has brought together allies from across the spectrum worried about their concentration of economic power.

The recently formed New Center political alliance that includes leaders from the traditional right and left has placed challenging big tech on its agenda.

Bill Galston, a former White House advisor under Bill Clinton and co-founder of New Center, argued that tech monopolies are hurting wages, entrepreneurship and could be distorting the political landscape.

The big tech firms have almost unlimited funds they can throw into lobbying, and they have been ramping this up steeply, Galston said. Is that a good thing for democracy?.

Lou Kerner, partner at the investment firm Flight Ventures, said this monopoly power is more concentrated than any in recent history, and expressed concern it will strangle innovation and increase income inequality.

But Kerner said he opposes heavy-handed regulation or breakup of the tech giants. By their nature regulators move slowly and by the time they address the problems they are no longer problems, Kerner said.

Historically the market has been much better at addressing monopoly powers in technology.

Ed Black, president of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, which represents firms including Google, Facebook and Microsoft, said breaking up the tech giants could have a chilling effect on innovation.

If our goal is really to maintain innovation, spur the entire economy, and grow higher paying jobs, asking the government to penalize a successful foundational economic sector, absent bad behavior or consumer harm, seems illogical, Black said.

European regulators have taken a more aggressive approach, imposing a hefty fine on Google after concluding the search giant illegally favored its own shopping services, one of three antitrust investigations into the company.

In Washington, the rise of Donald Trump suggests a possible shift in U.S. policy after years in which Silicon Valley was seen as close to the White House.

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon said recently he was leading an effort within the administration to turn Facebook and Google into public utilities.

But Federal Trade Commission chief Maureen Ohlhausen, who would lead any U.S. antitrust action, signaled any effort to break up tech firms is remote.

Given the clear consumer benefits of technology-driven innovation, I am concerned about the push to adopt an approach that will disregard consumer benefits in the pursuit of other perhaps even conflicting goals, Ohlhausen said in a speech at Georgetown University.

She said some tech critics want to rewrite the modern rules of antitrust enforcement to pursue a wide variety of goals other than consumer welfare.

Pancake pudding simultaneously hits two comfort food bullseyes |Japan Trending - Duration: 3:06.

Pancake pudding simultaneously hits two comfort food bullseyes

Like most red-blooded American kids, I spent the majority of my childhood with the firm belief that the best pudding flavor, unquestionably, was chocolate.

Then I grew up and moved to Japan, where the standard flavor for pudding (or purin, as it's locally called), an eggy custard, became a strong contender for throne.

Then I tried matcha green tea purin, and it was so delicious I pretty much thought the contest was over. But now Japan is poised to shake up my pudding preferences once again with the creation of pancake pudding!.

Morinaga is best known as a confectioner, but it also produces Japan's most popular pancake mix.

To celebrate the company's 60-year anniversary in the griddlecake business, Morinaga has recently announced that it will be adding Hotcake-Style Purinto its product lineup, and that it will recreate the buttery, starchy goodness of freshly cooked pancakes.

As a Japanese pudding, it'll likely have a thicker consistency than Western varieties, but still be soft enough to eat with a spoon.

But while the pancake pudding will allow you to ditch the knife and fork you'd ordinarily need to plow through a short stack, maple syrup remains a must.

If you take another look at the package, you might notice that while the lid is circular, the base is divided into two sections.

The larger one contains the pudding, and inside the smaller is an extra-sweet maple syrup. Once you peel off the lid, you fold the smaller section of the cup upward, sending the syrup cascading down onto the pudding while keeping your fingertips clean.

Morinaga's Hotcake-Style Pudding goes on sale October 3 in convenience stores and supermarkets, priced at just 140 yen, making it an extremely affordable way to get your flapjack fix.

And who knows, maybe if it really takes off, someday we'll see matcha green tea pancake pudding too.

Johnson Matthey looks to the future as it marks 200 years |Japan Trending - Duration: 11:51.

Johnson Matthey looks to the future as it marks 200 years

Johnson Matthey Chief Executive Officer Robert MacLeod, center, takes part in a sake barrel-opening ceremony.

In the business press, there is no shortage of articles lionising the latest "disruptive" startup. Whether it is in the world of tech or finance, there is always some hot new business attracting praise and attention.

But what can be lost in the noise is that there are firms with long, rich histories that continue to play an integral role in underpinning business today.

What these may lack in terms of eye-catching IPOs or product announcements, they more than make up for in serious business and a quiet innovation of their own.

One such firm is Johnson Matthey Plc, which got its start as a gold assayer in 1817 and today specialises in sustainable technologies.

With products that can be found in everything from cochlear implants to oil refineries, the firm this year celebrates its 200th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, Chief Executive Officer Robert MacLeod embarked on a breakneck, round-the-world tour to visit a number of the firm's offices.

On his stopover in Japan, where the firm has had a facility for 24 years, MacLeod attended a ceremony to celebrate the firm's history and achievements.

During his brief visit, he sat down with BCCJ ACUMEN to discuss Johnson Matthey's operations and what the future holds for the business.

Johnson Matthey comprises four divisions, however the vast majority of its operations in Japan fall under the rubric of clean air—others, such as those dedicated to improving health, are primarily focused on Europe and North America.

The portion of the business in Japan is concerned with controlling emissions, and for Johnson Matthey that means their catalytic converter technology, which has found its way into cars the world over.

But the impetus for the firm's start in Japan came from the other side of the Pacific Ocean, after enhanced restrictions on car emissions were put in place in the United States following major amendments to the Clean Air Act in 1990.

"They put regulations in place and, for a while, they could start off by meeting the regulations just by tweaking the engine and the engine management system.

But then, as the regulations got tighter, they had to find another route, and that's how they started to get involved in catalysts", MacLeod explained.

"It started in the United States, and it's all very well having the production plant there, but the decisions on the technical side were made [in Japan].

"Even today, for all the Japanese car companies—Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki—the purchasing decisions are made here in Japan, because they're made on a technical basis".

To get the technical approval the firm needs, it carries out various tests at its research centre in Sakura, Tochigi Prefecture. And that facility has since been joined by a manufacturing plant, which was established 15 years ago.

One of 10 Johnson Matthey factories around the world, it annually produces about 3mn of the 50mn catalysts that the firm makes globally.

"What happens is typically that you make the product in the market, the country or the time zone in which the customer's manufacturing plants are—you don't ship these products overseas because that's just too expensive", MacLeod explained.

That's because they contain valuable precious metals, and even though the amount of metal used is quite small, the value is high. This, in turn, affects the value of duties that need to be paid.

The parts would also need to be transported by sea, meaning that working capital would be tied up for a substantial amount of time.

With Japan's adoption of its own emissions regulations, it became necessary to have a manufacturing base in the country.

"It's grown a little bit over the years because the regulations have tightened, and as the regulations tighten, it has required a bit more complexity of the catalyst and more parts per car", MacLeod said.

"But the Japanese market over the last few years has been relatively stable, so we haven't had to add much manufacturing capacity recently".

What expansion has occurred has been driven by the expansion of regulations for trucks and motorcycles. But the firm has been working to make its catalysts more effective and, thus, more competitively priced.

This is achieved by researching and developing new products that contain less metal, but give the same performance. Reducing the amount of metal, in turn, generates a cost saving that can be passed on to the customer.

"For example, if we can reduce metal to give a five dollar cost saving in a car costing $15,000, that sounds very little.

But for a car company, $5 per car for several hundred thousand vehicles or a million vehicles—it just all adds up.

"But, of course, regulation has tightened at the same time. And normally, as regulations get tighter, the easiest way to meet the regulation is to put some more metal on it".

The big change on the horizon for Johnson Matthey comes from electric cars. While hybrid vehicles will still require catalysts, fully-fledged electric vehicles won't, due to the absence of an internal combustion engine.

To adapt to that change, the firm is having to call on its knowledge of chemistry and apply this to the materials that go into vehicle batteries.

In particular, it will mean focusing the firm's research on the material used for the cathode—what MacLeod describes as "the clever bit, the hard bit about a cell".

"Johnson Matthey is never going to be a cell manufacturer; that's not what we do. That will be for the likes of Panasonic, a Samsung, LG maybe, some big Chinese firms.

"Today, the limiting factor on the performance of the cell is the cathode and the cathode material. There's a lot of technology around cathode material and most of it's around lithium-based chemistry.

"We are actively looking at, and already have a business that makes, cathode materials—lithium-based cathode materials.

But this market is growing very rapidly and the opportunities are very significant, so we're investing in more and more technology to come up with better material to make the cell last longer, charge quicker, have more range and, of course, be of lower cost".

Currently, very little of that research is done in Japan—Johnson Matthey's main research centre is in the UK—but that could change, particularly if a Japanese firm emerged as a leader in batteries.

"I suspect in the future we will want to have some capability here, whether it's manufacturing capability or research capability—I don't know yet", said MacLeod. "It's more likely to be manufacturing than research, if I was to bet today.

And again, is it going to be Japan? It might be Korea, it might be China.

It depends where the cell companies are because, ultimately, it's going to be the cell companies—the cell manufacturers—that will want the material and we will want to be fairly close to where they are.

"But it's probably relatively transferable—once you know how to make a material and you've got some [intellectual property rights] over that material, then you can transfer it to another part of the world quite easily and quite quickly, as long as the production process is broadly similar".

Although the imminent demise of the internal combustion engine is now widely predicted as battery technology improves and governments throw their weight behind electric vehicles—the UK government has announced a ban on pure diesel and petrol cars and vans starting in 2040—MacLeod nonetheless predicts his firm's catalyst business will continue for the foreseeable future.

"I think the catalyst business will be alive and well for some time, because trucks are going to use the internal combustion engine for a long time to come; delivery vans will probably be internal combustion engine powered for some time to come, and large cars will probably have to stay with an engine for some time.

"It will certainly start at the smaller car, where you'll end up with batteries first. But that's where we've got an opportunity to be part of the world's evolution in power train development".

Lacazette double gives Arsenal 2-0 win over West Brom

Arsenals Nacho Monreal clears the ball off the line during their English Premier League soccer match between Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion at the Emirates stadium in London, Monday, Sept.

Alexandre Lacazette scored twice for Arsenal to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in the English Premier League on Monday and prolong the north London teams September fightback.

Arsenal lost two of its opening three matches but seven out of a possible nine points have been collected this month on top of victories in the Europa League and League Cup.

Lacazette, playing for the first time with Alexis Sanchez since joining in July for a club-record 60 million euros (then $68 million), combined with the Chile forward for the opener.

Sanchezs free kick in the 20th minute was tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Ben Foster but the ball came back out and Lacazette pounced to tap in.

The lead was preserved before halftime when Jay Rodriguezs header beat goalkeeper Petr Cech but Nacho Monreal produced a goal-line clearance.

Lacazette was on target again from the penalty spot in the 67th after Allan Nyom fouled Aaron Ramsey, giving the France forward his fourth goal in an Arsenal shirt.

It was a disappointing way for West Brom midfielder Gareth Barry to celebrate making a record 633rd Premier League appearance.

The 36-year-old Barry, who has also played for Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Everton, passed the mark set by former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs.

Barrys next target is breaking Giggs top-flight record of 672 appearances, encompassing matches before the Premier League started in 1992.
