Hey guys! Welcome to our first Q&A video, I'm Ashley Koi, Community Manager for Fish World. And I'm Matt, a developer on Fish World.
In our last monthly update video we asked you guys to send us your questions. We announced that Fish World is
upgrading to newer technologies,
In 2020 and we're here to discuss your questions, discuss some of your concerns,
And hopefully provide some solid answers for you.
First though Matt why don't you go ahead and tell us a little bit about yourself?
Right so as as I mentioned earlier, I'm Matt, a developer on Fish World,
I've been on Fish World for uh... a little over two years now,
and it's... been a great experience,
it's been a great experience working with Fish World and
Watching the community, watching the community interact with a lot of the features I've made
You guys are awesome. I just want to say you guys are awesome.
Ashlee: Aww.
And... If I had to name a favorite decoration, Bill the Holiday Cook.
Hands down, best decoration in the game.
Can't argue with that, honestly. It's a work of art.
Well first I thought we could dig into the topic. I'm sure players are excited to hear all about this process,
just by giving them a crash course on what Flash is and how it interacts with Fish World in their day-to-day
Okay, so a little bit on what flash is, it's a program that browsers use to help us deliver
interactive and exciting content to end-users
so if we think of it a little bit like a house,
Flash is uh... a kitchen.
Which is a special room of the house, where you...
Prepare special things, in this case we're using Flash to prepare Fish World for you,
Which is much like a kitchen being used to prepare a holiday ham.
Of course,
a staple of a holiday meal. Okay, so now that we have a better idea of what Flash is,
could you maybe explain to us, why we're upgrading from it?
Right, so, so I told you Flash is a great tool that we can use to create delicious holiday hams
But it comes with its own set of problems, so it's it's a kitchen, but it's not inside your house
It's in a trailer outside your house. It's a program that your browser uses, but it's not part of your browser
Because it's separate from your browser it
Has some some
It has its own set of issues kind of integrating nicely into it most browsers these days come shipped with Flash part of it
So you don't have to download an additional program. It's just
baked in,
But Flash being its own separate program
Has its own set of issues,
one of those issues being
That in order for it to deliver the powerful content that it needs to, it needs to have
Special access to your computer that most websites do not have
And some people in the past have used this for malicious intent
Which is which is not a great thing,
it's like, it's like that kitchen outside of your house has a bunch of loose wiring and you could accidentally zap yourself if you don't
Know what you're doing, so it's a little bit dangerous,
on top of that,
Browsers are moving away from Flash, so they have noticed these issues with it and have said
By 2020 we're no longer gonna be having this trailer in front of our house
We're going to be towing it away, and we're going to be getting rid of it
So that's why we're moving away from Flash. Okay. Well that sounds like a very good reason
I know our players are very concerned with their security, as are we for their security, and
Making sure that the game runs smoothly
One thing I've seen from players is some confusion around exactly what
HTML5 is as an alternative. So maybe you could describe it a little bit for them
Yeah, exactly so now that our kitchen is going
Where are we gonna cook our ham. So what HTML5 is, if you'll let me get technical for a second
It's a, it's a specification that was defined that tells you
How to build your browser and how to respond to certain internet content so if we can think of the browser as this house,
what HTML5 is, is the architectural drawings for the house,
Describing where the rooms should be and what they should do. And so what HTML5 brings to the table that previous
Specifications did not is now a kitchen to our house
So we can use that kitchen to deliver the same content that we used to deliver with Flash
but now in HTML5, so it's
It's the answer to Flash. It's what we're going to be moving forward with and using
It solves a lot of those security issues that Flash suffers, because it's part of the house, so it's robust
Yeah, it's the future
*Ashlee laughs*
So it's safer, it's newer, and it's inside the house so
Matt: Exactly. Ashlee: What more could you ask for? Matt: No more going out in the rain to get dinner
*laughs*
You don't want to leave a holiday ham out in the rain, that's bad business.
Well, how about we move on to some of our player questions, since that's the whole reason for this video, now that we have a
good context for the for the issue at hand
Our very own moderator Shannon Peterson would like to know
"When you guys move to HTML5 will it still be within Facebook?"
Absolutely. Absolutely if you'll let me go back to my analogy, I think it's doing some good here
if we look at HTML5 and Flash as *where* we prepare the meal, and
the meal being Fish World, in this case Fish World being a holiday ham,
Where we prepare that, doesn't change...
what it is. So it's still going to be Fish World, It's still gonna live inside Facebook, it's gonna look the same,
um.. and
It's still gonna be a holiday ham!
*laughing*
Well, I think Shannon will be very interested to hear that, and thank you for answering for her,
Our next question has come from Vicki Rivas, which I hope I'm pronouncing correctly, sorry if not
"How is this going to affect the tanks we've already built?"
Hi, Vicki. I'd like to address this question for a second because it's not going to affect your tanks at all
The tanks that you have today are still going to be the tanks that you're gonna have after the migration
After we're in an HTML5 fish world
Like I said we're gonna be changing how we're preparing that holiday ham,
but that's not going to be changing. Your tanks are going to be the same, your inventory is going to be the same,
Yeah.
Okay, you heard it from him!
I think that kind of goes along with the same theme as our next question from two players, Nona and Carla both
Wondering if their items are gonna be safe
Nona and Carla, your items are safe. They're safe with us
We're not going to change them. So when I'm talking about Flash and HTML5
These are technologies that live on your browser, your internet browser
Which is where we display Fish World to you, where you interact with Fish World,
but
That's a little bit different than where we keep your items, where we keep your fish tanks, where we keep all that information. That lives
On our servers which are elsewhere
Those aren't changing. We're not changing those. We're not changing your items. We're not changing your fish tanks
If this conversion goes well, you might not even notice that Fish World has changed at all. Oh, that'll be fun to see!
Maybe it just glosses by without anyone noticing. Yeah.
Alright, for our last player question this comes from Donna Rice, and
she would like to ask: "Could this be having any effect on the issues I'm having in Fish World right now?"
Hmm.. Yeah..
So Donna, I can't
answer that question without knowing specifically what your issues are - For example if your issues are not winning enough jackpots in the slot machine
This isn't gonna fix that issue
But, it is gonna do something
To help us fix issues that you or other players might be facing. When we're switching from Flash to HTML5,
We're gonna
have a much greater
control over exactly what the game is doing.
So for example, Flash might have an oven in it that only cooks at 500 degrees Celsius,
but now, we have an oven that cooks at many different temperatures so
It's gonna. Give us a greater control over how fish world works,
and hopefully we're going to be able to fix a lot of the problems that you players are seeing
But I can't guarantee that we'll fix your issue specifically, because well
I don't know what they are, right? Send in a ticket Donna! We'll help you out
Great, so um the next question is actually one of mine
Based on what I've seen
Discussed on the group and from players, they seem to wonder
Why do we have to dedicate all of our time and resources
In terms of development on this right now. Why can't we spread it out a bit more, focus on some other features,
Why is it such a priority for us?
Right so the reason we have made it such a
priority is simply because of the amount of work that we have in front of us to do. So
browsers announced that they were going to be towing this trailer away from the front of your house
just this past summer, and they gave us they gave us a two year window to kind of
Migrate off of Flash.
Now those of you, who've been playing Fish World,
I know a lot of you have been playing Fish World for a lot longer than two years
So this game has been in development for
Quite a long time, and to take all of that development and switch it over to a different
technology, in the timeline we're looking at is about a year,
takes a lot of work,
And that's why we're prioritizing it, so that we make sure we have it ready for you
before you experience issues with Flash being gone, and making sure that you as a player still have an awesome game to play
So basically better safe than sorry and better to be prepared ahead of time than not to. Absolutely. Absolutely.
Great.
Ok well, that's been very informative for me, I hope it's been the same for you guys
and...
Is there anything else you'd like to say before we end the show today Matt?
Well I'd just like to tell the players that we've got a really bright future in front of us with HTML5
I think with this conversion Fish World is gonna be better than ever. And I'm looking forward to sharing the future with you
Indeed. And we also plan to update players along the way as I mentioned in the last video, so we're excited for that,
and I just want to thank you all for submitting your questions for Matt to answer, we both appreciate it very much
and for supporting the game, and
As well let us know in the comments if you liked the Q&A, if you'd like to see more of them, because we've got some
talented people on our team who would love to share what they do with you
So with that, thank you for watching, and we'll see you on the next video!
