Over in Tokyo, British Prime Minister Theresa May and her Japanese counterpart reaffirmed

their commitment to stopping North Korea's aggression.

During the summit the two leaders urged China to do more to rein in the regime.

Won Jung-hwan shares with us what was discussed.

The Prime Ministers of the U.K. and Japan both standing together,... when it comes to

North Korea.

The two leaders pressed for tighter cooperation when countering North Korea's provocations,...

just days after the regime fired an IRBM over Japan, where the U.K. Prime Minister is visiting.

Prime Minister Theresa May reaffirmed the U.K.'s mutual stance with Japan on North Korea.

(ENGLISH) "Through our deepening security partnership

we must work together to enhance our collective response to the threats to the international

order and global peace and security.

And that must include confronting the threat that North Korea poses, and ensuring that

the regime in North Korea stops these aggressive acts."

Prime Minister May added that China has influence over North Korea and that it should use it,...

saying that Beijing has the most "leverage" to resolve the issue.

May also attended Tokyo's top security meeting ahead of the joint presser,... adding more

weight to the regime's provocative actions -- which have already led to international

condemnation.

She became the second foreign leader to attend such a meeting in Japan,... after then-Australian

PM Tony Abbot in 2014.

The U.K. leader also noted that North Korea's two ICBM launches don't just threaten its

neighbors in Asia, but Europe as well, as the continent is within range of the North's

missiles.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe,... echoed the statement.

(JAPANESE) "North Korea's reckless action of sending

another missile over the skies of Japan is a threat.

Japan and Britain will cooperate to counter this."

The two,... have agreed to cooperate toward getting the UN Security Council to adopt a

tougher resolution on North Korea.

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan-3 - Duration: 1:19.

Rattling not just the allies, but also Tokyo this time.

A ballistic missile passing through Japan's airspace.

What is the underlying intention of the unpredictable regime?

Well, Daniel this is not the first time Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile directly over

Japan.

It's actually the second time.

Most reports have the facts wrong.

North Korea launched an missile known as the Daepodong missile that flew over Japan on

August 31st, 1998, so it's actually the second time.

However, the expert I spoke with says the recent launch has another meaning too.

Here's what he had to say.

(Korean) "The latest missile shows that North Korea

is capable of targeting Guam, making it an indirect threat to the U.S..

They didn't fire the missile due to the ongoing UFG joint military exercise.

They are looking at the bigger picture and showing they are capable of targeting Guam."

12 . . UFG . 12 .

The distance between Pyongyang and Guam is some three thousand kilometers.

At the height of the U.S.-North Korea tensions earlier this month,... North Korea threatened

to launch four Hwasong-12 intermediate ballistic missiles into waters near Guam to show it's

capable of targeting U.S. military bases on the island.

Thanks Hyun-bin for the analysis of North Korea's recent missile launch.

North Korea threatened Japan to destroy. - Duration: 1:52.

North Korea has threatened Japan with destruction for siding with the United States shortly

after Pyongyang fired a missile that flew over Japan.

An article on North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday warned

Japan of "imminent self-destruction."

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had earlier denounced the launch of the North Korean missile

over Japan as an "unprecedented, serious and grave threat," and agreed with US President

Donald Trump to "further strengthen pressure against North Korea."

North Korea on Tuesday fired a Hwasong-12 missile — reportedly capable of carrying

a nuclear payload — that traveled nearly 2,700 kilometers into the Pacific and triggered

alert warnings as it flew over northern Japan.

The launch sparked angry reactions from Japan and the United States, as well as calls for

restraint by other countries.

The move also prompted a United Nations Security Council emergency session at the request of

Washington and Tokyo and a subsequent resolution that condemned the launch.

Pyongyang says it will not give up on its missile and nuclear deterrence unless Washington

ends its hostile policy toward the country and dissolves the US-led UN command in South

Korea.

The Japanese government has refused to accept a petition filed by Korean victims of Japan's

wartime sexual slavery... demanding compensation for Tokyo's war crimes.

An attorney representing the women said on Monday,... Japan returned the complaint to

a South Korean court, on August 16th.

The Japanese government, citing the Hague Service Convention... claims the petition

is a violation of the country's sovereignty.

Although Seoul and Tokyo signed an agreement in late 2015, to end the dispute... the Moon

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan-1 - Duration: 1:42.

Staying with North Korea's latest missile launch.

It marks a significant escalation of Kim Jong-un's defiance of the leaders of U.S. and Japan.

For and in-depth analysis of the situation, we have our defense ministry correspondent

Kim Hyun-bin with us in the studio.

Hyun-bin Trump said Kim was starting to respect Washington.,... but he's probably rethinking

that assessment.

Daniel, North Korea fired what is believed to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile

directly over the northern part of Japan Tuesday morning.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the missile was fired from Sunan, near Pyongyang.

The JCS says the missile flew directly over Hokkaido and fell into the North Pacific Ocean.

The Pentagon has also confirmed the missile flew over Japan's territory,...adding that

it's still assessing the launch.

We know that the missile flew some 27-hundred kilometers,... reaching an altitude of 550

kilometers... but we are still waiting to find out what kind of missile it was.

But as expected,... the launch has been widely condemned,... with the JCS calling it a clear

violation of UN Security Council resolutions... and a threat to world peace and stability.

(Korean) "North Korea's ballistic missile launch is

a challenge to Seoul and Washington,... and we strongly denounce it.

We are closely monitoring movements from the North,... and we warn the regime to halt all

its provocative acts."

' ' , . , .

South Korea's JCS warned that Seoul and Washington are fully ready to counter any additional

provocations from the North and that it will sternly counter any threats.

World War 3: Japan defence ministry asks for extra $160 million for long-range missiles - Duration: 3:53.

World War 3: Japan defence ministry asks for extra $160 million for long-range missiles

If approved, the proposal for a rise of 2. 5 percent in defence spending to 5. 26 trillion yen ($48 billion) for the year starting April 1, will be the sixth straight annual increase as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe bolsters the military.

The funds will pay for ballistic missile defence upgrades, six F-35 stealth fighters, four V-22 Osprey tilt rotor troop carriers, besides orders for new naval vessels, including a submarine and two compact warships.

Around $90 million of the requested missile development funds of $160 million will go on studying hypersonic missiles to quickly penetrate enemy defences.

The rest will pay for research on extending missile range, technology that could potentially be used to help develop strike weapons.

"The research and development is for island defence," a Ministry of Defence official told a briefing, referring to the southwestern Okinawa island chain skirting the East China Sea, where Japan is embroiled in a territorial dispute with China.

The funding for missile development, though relatively small, could nonetheless spark controversy, since Japans war-renouncing constitution imposes restrictions on strike weapons for the military.

Some lawmakers of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) argue that Japan needs weapons able to strike North Korean missile sites, so as to deter attacks by Pyongyang.

The longest range missiles in Japans arsenal, which includes anti-aircraft and anti-ship munitions, have ranges of less than 300 .

A group of LDP lawmakers that recommended Japan acquire strike weapons was led by Minister of Defence Itsunori Onodera before he took up his post in August.

But such a proposed shift in military strategy would face stiff political opposition from critics in Japan who say Abes hawkish policies have gone too far, hurting his already soggy popularity.

"Striking enemy bases after an attack to stop subsequent launches would seem like a natural thing to do, but that would be difficult for people in Japan to accept under the current constitution," an LDP lawmaker said, asking not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The proposed defense budget will face scrutiny by Ministry of Finance officials who may seek to rein in military outlays as they juggle demands for higher spending on health and welfare for Japans ageing population.

Japan says it will respond firmly to N. Korea's latest missile test - Duration: 1:01.

A chorus of condemnation has been streaming in from across the world... following Pyongyang's

latest missile provocation.

Tokyo in particular,... has been incensed... after it was prompted to warn local residents

to take shelter,... as the North Korean missile, flew over its territory.

It's the second time the North has fired a missile over Japan, since 1998... when another

rocket violated Japanese airspace, before falling in the ocean.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says the missile launch was a serious

and unprecedented threat to the country,... and promised to take firm measures.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson,... also slammed the regime, in a statement posted

on Twitter,... saying he was outraged at North Korea's "reckless provocations".

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan-2 - Duration: 0:53.

We're still at the early stages of analysis of the launch.

While we can't pinpoint exactly what type it is... what could we figure out based on

the range and altitude.

That's right.

The National Intelligence Service, the defense ministry will be looking at that question

as we speak.

But based on the data we have, an expert was able to draw this conclusion.

Have a listen.

(Korean) "Looking at the range and altitude of the

missile, it's an IRBM.

North Korea has three types: Pukuksong-2, Musudan and Hwasong-12.

Recently, North Korea attached a new 3-1-8 engine on the Hwasong-12 and tested it four

times and used the same engine to test the Hwasong-14 twice.

Looking at all this information, the regime likely launched a Hwasong -12 IRBM."

Japan to freeze assets of Chinese and Namibian firms as part of N. Korea sanctions - Duration: 1:45.

Japan is set to roll out new sanctions... targeting firms and individuals from China

and Namibia,... with suspected business ties to North Korea.

Tokyo's latest move is part of its unilateral measures to turn up the heat on Pyongyang,...

following its recent test-firing of two ICBMs.

Yu Joonhee reports.

Japanese media is reporting that Tokyo will blacklist six companies and two individuals...

from China and Namibia.

Citing government sources,... the report says the measures are designed to restrict the

movement... of North Korean coal exports and guest workers,... two of the most important

revenue sources for the cash-strapped regime.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet... is expected to approve the sanctions on Friday,

according to the report.

Tokyo's reported move is seemingly in tandem with that of Washington,... with the Trump

administration on Tuesday,... adding 16 mostly Chinese and Russian entities to its updated

blacklist.

These measures come... after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a new sanctions

resolution earlier this month... that could slash North Korea's annual exports by a third.

The moves are likely to draw criticism from China however,... which opposes unilateral

sanctions by *any country... outside of the UN framework.

Chinese banks, trading firms, and individuals... have a become a frequent target of these sanctions...

over their alleged, intimate ties to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

The two firms based in Namibia, that have come into Tokyo's crosshairs... are believed

to be involved... in the overseas dispatch of North Korean laborers.

In recent years,... Namibia has been forging closer ties with the Kim Jong-un regime,...

with a senior North Korean official having reportedly met with the country's president.

President Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Abe reaffirm solidarity during phone conversation - Duration: 2:13.

The leaders of South Korea and Japan spoke on the phone this morning about issues related

to security on the Korean peninsula.

President Moon and Prime Minister Abe agreed to strengthen cooperation between their two

countries and also with the United States... in dealing with North Korea's nuclear threats.

And as for the sensitive historical issues between Seoul and Tokyo, they agreed to cultivate

a future-oriented partnership.

Oh Jung-hee reports.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had a phone conversation

on Friday morning... and reaffirmed the solidarity between Seoul and Tokyo in dealing with North

Korea's threats.

It was the fourth such phone call after President Moon's inauguration.

(Korean) "Through a close cooperation between Seoul

and Tokyo as well as with Washington,... the two leaders agreed to continue strong sanctions

and pressure upon Pyongyang with the international community... but ultimately solve the issue

with dialogue and peaceful means."

During the phone call, according to Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura,...

Prime Minister Abe told President Moon that the North's "provocative behavior is dramatically

escalating," and that the Guam threat is "absolutely intolerable."

Prime Minister Abe also emphasized the need for stronger pressure on Pyongyang... so that

the regime halts provocations and takes sincere steps for denuclearization.

According to Nishimura, President Moon said he understands the concerns of the Japanese

people... and expressed appreciation towards Japan's new unilateral sanctions against Chinese

and Namibian companies thought to be helping Pyongyang.

The two leaders agreed to discuss what the 'appropriate conditions' will be to have a

dialogue with the reclusive regime.

They also saw eye to eye in the need to cultivate a future-oriented partnership while dealing

with sensitive historical issues... such as the forced conscription and labor of Koreans

under Japan's colonial rule.

The leaders of Seoul and Tokyo are looking to hold summit talks next month, on the sidelines

of the Eastern Economic Forum to take place in Vladivostok, Russia.
