Hello World! I'm Manga Senpai!
I'm so excited today.
Because someone gave me a question!
Thanks a lot!
I'm happy that someone in oversea watching this video.
I'm very happy to know that.
I have a question from Joshua.
Thanks Joshua. You're Manga Kohai.
Well, I'll answer the question of Manga Kohai No.1!
I'll ignore the previous procedures to do that but I'll do it.
Yeah we've had the Q&A session though we didn't know that.
I'm waiting for your Qs. Any question related to drawing manga.
I know you're having struggle with drawing manga.
I want to know WHICH PART you're struggling with.
I want to know what you want to know.
Question from Joshua: "I would like to learn more about inking my manga. I am often confused about where to make lines thick or thin, adding thin detail lines on objects or clothing, and adding the solid black beta areas. Sometimes I feel my line work is too perfect and digital looking. I would also like to know the correct technique for inking objects and backgrounds as well. "
So his question is how to ink manga.
In Japanese manga culture, we call inking "Pen-ire".
"Pen-ire". Which process of manga making we are talking of?
Previously we did Name at first.
Then "Shitagaki". Sketching part.
And then we do inking in general manga making process.
Actually, I had have struggled with inking.
I had not get the anatomy of inking.
Though I tried hard,
my drawing ended in somehow childish quality.
I was wondering why it happened.
Once I was an assistant of a manga artist.
And he said like, Please draw the background like "DEATH NOTE".
The manga, "DEATH NOTE" has very realistic background. I'm like "What's the difference between "DEATH NOTE" and my drawing?"
And I founded a solution. I'll tell you that right now.
For example, drawing an electric pole.
Are there electric poles in your town? It's called Denchu in Japan.
-There are few cities with electric poles in Europe. -Really? That's bad.
In Japan, there are many electric poles. Please google it.
In English, electric pole? Electrical pole?
Denchu is very familiar in Japan. Many electric poles in almost every city.
Like this. Actually Denchu is not that big, but anyway...
Anyway, imagine you drew things like this.
At this stage, this drawing has no realism.
I consider why this kind of drawing has no reality.
What I want to tell you, Joshua,
what makes the inking line thin and thick is
light and shadow.
And I suppose it doesn't make any sense to you.
How we put the idea of light and shadow in our drawing?
At first,
just decide which direction the light comes from.
The position of the sun.
Just decide it roughly.
And consider which side the shadow was made.
The point is that, you ink shadows ONLY.
Just doing this, we can make a drawing more realistic.
This is where the light reflects, so I erase this line.
And this, and this.
These parts are where shadows made so I left these lines.
This is the light part.
This drawing gets more reality already. You see?
By only doing this method, it makes your drawing more realistic.
I think so. Real.
If you step further, you make the lines of darker part thicker.
And this is okay when you imagine strong light.
But maybe you would like more softer light. So these lines do not disappear completely.
Because it is soft, weak light, you can see thinner lines.
So you draw thin lines in lighter part.
And darker part thicker.
Then you add some details in darker parts. It makes your drawing more realistic!
Plus, the detail parts like this. You consider the same thing as the whole part. Light and shadow.
You draw just shadowy parts.
And erase the lighter parts.
You do not need these lines.
It will be like this. And this is enough,
If you draw shadowy parts, human brain complements the shape of lighter parts.
So you draw shadowy parts and omit lighter parts. It brings more realism to your work!
Now I'll tell you about how to draw a texture.
Different materials have different shape of bumps of inking line.
If this electric pole is made of knitting wool,
the line will be more fluffy like this.
But electric pole is made of concrete generally.
So we draw this with straight lines.
However, there are wooden electric poles in old days.
If you'd like to draw that,
you can draw grain of wood with thin lines like this.
This little difference of thin lines makes a feeling of texture and materials.
How we apply this method to character drawing?
It's same thing.
You draw things like this.
By the way, your drawing of a girl was very good, Joshua.
First, you decide where the sunlight comes from.
Then, consider where the shadows drop.
For example, this part. You make the line little bit thicker.
Just a little. This is a little difference of the line but it made a big difference of the drawing.
And the shadows made by cloths. Like this.
This is a collar. You put a little shadow like this.
And this is where the light falls, so the line will be thiner.
This part is where shadow drops so you can make the like thicker.
This is shadow so I paint it in black.
This is lighter part so thinner line.
Like this.
This is it for today. I'd like to gather questions from you guys. Then I'll get many things to talk about. That's great.
Thank you Joshua!
