Medellin Colombia once well-known for possessing the somewhat undesirable
title of the murder capital of the world predominantly as a result of a bloody
and violent history of drug-related crime orchestrated by the world's most
infamous drug trafficker the notorious of Pablo Escobar head of the machine
cartel which operated primarily during the 80s and early 90s Medellin is now a
seemingly safe and developed city largely as a result of the people's
determination to rectify the world perception today and joining local
company Medellin city tours on their half day Pablo Escobar tour which gives
you an insight into Medellin's dark history and takes you to another
famous point of interest all the while absorbing fascinating and intriguing
personal stories for the knowledgeable and experienced guide let's go
so good morning I am in hablado which is basically the richer area of Medellin in
Colombia it's about 8:00 a.m. I'm heading towards a bar which I'm hoping
I'll be able to find which throw I'm meeting the guide let's go aha I found
it Donde aquellos obviously as per usual I am 40 minutes early but never
mind and while I'm waiting I'll tell you now I will put all the details of
managing city services in the description below a link to their
Facebook page also a link to their website so you can see all about this
tour and exactly what it entails including the cost how helpful ok the
guide is here Carlos you'll meet him in a minute as I've asked over there let's
get on the bus Pablo Escobar was born in Rio Negro in 1949 but grew up in
Medellin after engaging in a lengthy period of petty to more serious crime
Pablo became involved in the drug trade namely cocaine being largely responsible
for the establishment of smuggling routes to the u.s. in the 70s
similar to Griselda Blanco aka the Black Widow
Escobar became the head of the notorious MEDELLIN drug cartel turning over an
astronomical amount of dollars each year Escobar also became heavily involved in
politics and used his wealth to become the Robin Hood of Colombia donating
money to poorer areas in terms of education and healthcare increasing his
popularity with an increasingly oblivious local people
but in reality Medellin had become one of the most dangerous cities in the
world with significant numbers of local policemen and innocent citizens
kidnapped tortured or murdered every day as a result of shootings bombings and
contract killings for Escobar's army of bodyguards and hitmen Carlos our guide
is an ex police commander who served in the late 80s and early 90s the stories
he tells you as we headed to the area in which Escobar grew up Carlos told us
stories only someone involved can tell you as a police commander he instructed
his officers to carry a spare bullets or even a grenade in their vehicles to end
their lives in the event of capture the alternative was horrific torture
potentially involving the removal of teeth fingers
we had to be prepared for the inevitable losing colleagues and friends on a daily
basis so what traces has he left his ruthless murderer almost Colombian state
to its knees the face of Pablo Escobar and I've seen a bus when the students
will love you yeah you see her whether Jesus Christ Virgin Mary or Pablo Escobar
on so those are like the icons dark blue letters Bienvenidos Barrio Pablo Escobar
welcome so the value is Pablo's favela and then there are two
like stencil pictures of him and underneath it says here one breathes peace
We arrived in barrio Pablo Escobar after hearing Carlos's stories our
couldn't imagine Pablo Escobar ever being seen in a positive light I was
wrong
so we've now come to Pablo Escobar's like home area basically it's kind of
like a favela slum and one of the things just look at the view behind me amazing
that's one thing you can see am imaging all of the buildings up high on the
mountains and one of the things that Carlos says a few times is the fact that
the opinion is divided in Medellin and Colombia in general so
some people will idolize him in terms of Jesus Mary and then Pablo Escobar
they'll worship him and which is bizarre and other people obviously think
be able to complete psycho murders kidnap drug trafficking insane you know
you've got this new level of him up there and one of the reasons that he was
I guess idolize is because he had kind of a double life as a politician and
also a drug trafficker and a lot of people seem to be oblivious of the drug
trafficking inside and think that actually he was an amazing person the
opinion is divided as I said so and this area is actually called barrio Pablo
Escobar it's named after him so it gives you an idea of the fact that he is very
much idolized in a lot of ways this area reminds me a lot of fan when I was in a
favela in Rio doesn't feel safe yeah to be honest with you I don't know
but take you here if it wasn't safe but there is some just look at these views
down here stunning and this is proper meta-gene you know but it's great you
can have a local who had experience of this and what happened and he's going to
show you around
in 1991 escobar surrendered to the authorities in return for his surrender
he was placed in his own luxury jail high above Medellin but his criminal
activities continued and upon hearing of his transfer to a conventional prison he
escaped we moved on to a rooftop where on the 2nd of December 1993 he finally
met his end let's hear Carlos's story and that the a
we hear 1000 people to get one my commander go get up into the house
got a mp5 gun Pablo Escobar saw my commander
stood by the wall opposite Pablo Escobar
one bullet nine millimeters hit Pablo Escobar over here
that bullet didn't kill Pablo escobar gaviria
so that is the question about who killed Pablo escobar is controversial
what we fail for that jump
he jumped from the second floor come here and from the other side was a 9mm
my commander said he killed Pablo escobar as revenge
second thing, a sniper from US at no he don't kill Pablo Escobar, sniper never use a 9mm
as enemies of Pablp Escobarl because Mancuso our chief commander right now to
is still alive, he's in prison in the US for the rest of his life
he said we killed Pablo escobor a paramilitary group killed Pablo escobar
or escobar commited suicide, he would rather die in Colombia than be in US jail
when their rooftop because they will party they need to see if it was the real body
unlike that is why this guy share it a mustache or fun squad
you see a photo it is not a Hitler mustache hey man it's like a joke
I mean it's a because those guys also they need to know in the real body they
are this follows partly to make a test of DNA but of all ages of DNA say that is
follows because this post-war so that is that alias for some people here in
tourism people can be here is a part of our province to the life know me is
really there
so as you can probably tell we're at a cemetary and Pablo Escobar's grave which is slightly
bizarre there's this whole family there as well there's the Black Widow there's
other people connected to this whole story I won't talk about Carlos for a
second really interesting so on the bus ride here he gives you an epic tale of
his experience so he was an ex-policeman in the late eighties and early 90s and
he tells you all about three or four times where he almost died in bombings
shootings was actually involved
We're at Comina 13 as he said I will be doing a video about this in more detail
Medellin City Tours do do a four hour tour to here to see this area in more
detail so I'm not gonna go into too much detail right now but just look at these
views got graffiti everywhere amazing use out there absolutely stunning and
this is an area that basically was like a gateway to in terms of drugs basically
so behind this area is where cocaine was produced and this was a gateway into the
rest of the energy but as I said we'll go through that in more detail but
meta-gene has changed often described as the city of innovation this is evident
in areas such as coming to 13 where investment has clearly taken place to
rid the city of its reputation and Escobar's legacy since his death but is
it fully safe no Carlos explains to us that despite the steps forward Escobar's
actions still hang over the city the drug trade is still an issue now coming
to meta-gene witnessing the cable cars and public transport system as well as
the escalators connecting community into the rest of the city you can see just
how much the city is progressing but what really strikes you is the
people they had to choose towards Escobar and their focus on changing the
world perception of Medici is striking
so we just doubled across the mayor of Medellin a big kerfuffle down
there lots of film crews amazing
Colombian coffee is beautiful 3,000 pesos amazing so what my final thoughts
on this talk now you might know from my channel but
I'm not really one for tours in the past but in actual fact it does making you
different for a number of reasons mainly that you know you hear stuff from locals
that were actually here at the time you know it's strange that people it's only
like 25 to 30 years ago or business happening I don't know anything about
this before I came here now I'm full of information and it's fantastic you get
so much more information I do one of these tours than if you would return
yourself second thing is be a bit of another view about Medellin so as a
tourist definitely I feel safe in Medellin I think everyone does that's I guess the
testament to how this city has changed over the years and I guess what it's
done please in the back of my mind I have this safety issue
I guess because even though public supply is gone and that whole regime is
gone there is still an element of his legacy if you like that's the best way
of it so that's the thing I've learnt now today
I think this talk has been fantastic like I said in the description below all
the details before this tour I highly recommend you do it really complimentary
because absolutely fantastic ok I'm back from the tour as you can
probably tell and thoroughly exhausted made some sleep thank you very much to
minnijean city tours for taking me along today it was absolutely awesome if
you've been on this tour or a similar tool why don't you tell me about your
experience down in the comments below that would be great hope you found this
video interesting and if you want to see more videos like this from Colombia cuz
there are some more coming by the way don't forget to hit that subscribe
