Japan's Hashima Island was given World Heritage status in 2015.

Contrary to how the Japanese government promotes it, the site was a prison for Koreans forced

into hard labor.

While Tokyo promised to outline all aspects of the so-called battleship island, their

implementation report was heavily criticized.

It will be put to evaluation this week.

Lee Ji-won reports.

Japan's report on its progress so far in telling the "full history" of Hashima Island will

be scrutinized this week by the World Heritage Committee at their annual session held this

year in Bahrain.

Known as a "state of conservation report," the document was submitted last year, and

covered efforts related to Japan's world heritage sites of the Meiji Revolution period,... including

Hashima Island, also known as "Battleship Island."

During the Second World War, between five hundred and eight hundred Koreans were forcibly

taken to Hashima to work in coal mines for little or no pay and hardly any food.

When Hashima was listed as a world heritage site in 2015, Japan had promised to publicize

the island's true history, which would include setting up information centers and commemorating

the victims.

The World Heritage Committee is expected to publish its analysis of Japan's progress report

on Wednesday.

The review's first draft strongly urges Japan to do its best to address Hashima's full history,

but many South Koreans are saying that it does not clearly deal with the loopholes in

Tokyo's reports.

In fact, Japan's progress report fails to include either of the phrases "forced labor"

or "brought against their will,"... phrases Japan itself had used back in 2015.

Instead it says simply that there was a large number of people from the Korean Peninsula

who "supported" Japanese industry.

The committee's first draft also does not address Japan's plans for the information

center, which would be located in Tokyo, over a thousand kilometers away from Hashima -- a

gesture seen as insincere.

Even worse, the center is to be set up as a "think tank," which could be used to portray

the facts as a matter of opinion.

A South Korean foreign affairs official said the government has been firm that it cannot

accept Japan's 2017 report, and that it has raised the issue with UNESCO, its advisory

committee ICOMOS, the member states, and even with Japan.

"The official added that Seoul will make sure the World Heritage Committee correctly addresses

the issue this time, so that Japan's next implementation report, due at the end of 2019,...

will be properly amended and evaluated in 2020.

Lee Ji-won, Arirang News."

Trying Japan's Famous Black Ramen - Duration: 3:13.

- [Narrator] This is black ramen.

And this dish in particular

is a five-time national champion.

But its origins came from a restaurant

a few paces down the road.

Here.

(foreign language)

Toyama is a coastal city in the northeast of Japan.

It is known worldwide for one thing in particular.

And that is its signature Toyama black ramen.

(foreign language)

The recipe originated back in 1947 from one man.

(foreign language)

Traditionally, ramen broth is made from pork or miso.

When these were not available, Mr. Aoiki

looked to what was around, and that was soy sauce.

(foreign language)

If you want to try Toyama black ramen,

you have to go to Toyama.

(foreign language)

And one of those is Ramen Iroha,

whose black ramen, as we said earlier,

is often heralded as the best ramen in the country.

(foreign language)

This signature dish of the region

draws in crowds from around the country and the world.

And the claim of best ramen in Japan

makes the draw that much more intense.

(foreign language)

(upbeat music)

アシタノワダイはヤバくないから!!! YouTube Japan Crap Conspiracy Theory - Duration: 6:09.

Hey, kids it's me PDRsan

There's something strange going on with a channel called Ashitanowadai (Tomorrows Topic [of conversation])

can you make a video about that?

Thank you for the video idea

I had never heard of Ashitanowadai until I saw this tweet

so I immediately went to YouTube to do research

The man who has been eating Big Macs for 46 years

Hello, it's Mai

Oh

Hello

Fact 1. The reason Super Saiyan is blond

*sigh*

I want a boyfriend

but I don't want to go outside

I know I'll ask The Google what to do

and the Japanese Academy Award

for best Actress goes to

Mai with that crappy sponsored video she made

Who's this?

My girlfriend

She's cute

How did you get a cute girlfriend like that Nekoman?

Wait a second

You have someone who can do voices like this

so why the hell are these character talking with text?

give them voices!

It just looks and sounds so bad

Also this is a sponsored video! You totally gave the company it's moneys worth!!

It's me Meetan

Pun pun

No more...

so here's what I found out watching a few videos

*sigh*

This is one of those channels that rips off/gathers Lists and Trivia from online articles

and turns it into video form

and of course in the thumbnails they have

Arrows

Circles

Boobs

are used heavily

What differentiates this channel from these other list/trivia channels

A real person is doing the voice over

(A lot of these channels in Japan tend to have no voice over or a robotic voice)

Also the fact that there's clips of a cute girl at the beginning and end of the video

Can you buy me Mt. Fuji (No!)

and sometimes she's in her own solo videos

but why's everybody going nuts over this channel?

I'm guessing a lot of you watching already know

but for those of you that don't know

Yeah?

Ashitanowadai

Stopped posting videos about a month ago

but then they came back a few days ago with this video

About What Happened

and then she goes on to talk about something that has nothing to do with that title

My Top 5 Things From McDonald's

That's like something you would do

Shut it

You know it's true

and

the reason everybody is going nuts is because

There's a bunch of subliminal messages in this video

and when you put them together it reads

I know you're watching, you murderer

Wow what an original subliminal message

Amamzing

Dude!

yeah yeah

Also at the end of the video

All jokes aside

I'm sorry for not uploading for a while

At the moment I'm in hiding in a place Tokyo

and am safe

I'm going to Palestine tomorrow

so I should be even safer.

Also in the comments

people were worried we had strikes on our channel

but we're good. We should start posting again soon (maybe)

and then footage of their channel status

Have a nice weekend

Did you find your topic for tomorrow?

We all die someday

Also people are going on about

the way she's wearing her dress is how people who are ready to die wear it (back in the old times)

the fact she's drinking a mac shake they don't sell anymore

the fact that the last video was flipped, but this one isn't

the list goes on

but

who fucking cares!

What?

It's

obviously a publicity stunt to get all the dumb YT Japan Conspiracy Theorists talking

it's a ruse

for fuck sake

Well their channel name is Ashitanowadai (tomorrows topic of discussion)

It seems like some of their videos were deleted

so they probably got two strikes on their channel and were'n't able to post anything

I believe if you get two strikes you can't post for a month (actually it's two weeks)

or maybe they just ran out of material to steal

I see

They put the bait out and all of you channels bit

and because of that this video got waaaaay more views than most of their recent output

Good job guys

Aren't you part of the problem too?

What?

I mean there's definitely going to be some people who go and check out that video after watching this

Oh

Please give me a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video(^o^)b

Don't forget to subscribe!

click the bell icon to get notifications for my videos ^^

What do you guys think of this? Do you think it's stupid? Do you think it's clever? Let me know!

Also check out my last video

Tomorrow there will be a new video on my second channel

so subscribe (if you want) ^^

Bye!!!(^-^)

Squeaky Floor Castle Japan - Nijo Castle in Kyoto - Duration: 3:28.

Today we visit Nijo Castle in Kyoto,

an extremely important place in Japan

and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Nijo Castle is where the history of Japan

changed from feudal Japan

to the modern Japan

that we know of today.

In 1868, the Meiji Declaration was signed at Nijo Castle inside the Ninomaru Palace

which restored ruling power to the emperor.

This declaration ended

the reign of the military leaders

known as shoguns

and ended the entire

way of the samurai.

Nijo Castle was built in 1603

by Tokugawa Ieyasu,

the first shogun of the Edo period,

also known as the Tokugawa period (1603 - 1868).

For Japan, the Edo period was a time of

peace and stability.

The Tokugawas also moved the capital of Japan

from Kyoto to Edo,

which we now call Tokyo.

Nijo Castle was where the Tokugawa shoguns

lived and conducted business

when they visited Kyoto.

The lords and samurais were the only ones invited

into the inner rooms to see the shogun.

Low ranking people were only allowed

in the outside rooms of the palace.

The first Tokugawa, Ieyasu,

banished Christianity

and almost completely isolated Japan from

trading with the rest of the world

to protect Japan and the power of the shogun.

He also burned the Osaka Castle to the ground

and killed the entire Toyotomi people because

the Toyotomi's were a threat to the Tokugawas.

At the end of the Tokugawa period in 1868,

the Tokugawa hollyhock crest

was removed from the Nijo Castle

and replaced with the imperial chrysanthemum.

Inside the palace,

the nightingale floors served as an alarm system.

When someone walks on the floors

the wood rubs on the nails

making a sound like a nightingale bird chirping!

The elaborate woodwork and ornate gold leaf

inside the palace showed all visitors the

power and wealth of the shogun.

In 1750 and in 1788,

fire destroyed the five story castle

and parts of the palace

which were never rebuilt.

When you visit the castle,

you can walk inside the Ninomaru Palace.

Pictures are not allowed inside the palace

and you will need to remove your shoes

when you enter.

Because of the large variety of cherry trees

inside the castle garden,

cherry blossom season

lasts from late March through all of April.

I recommend closed toe shoes

because small pebbles line the garden pathways.

Be sure to take the stairs

to the top of the castle wall

for great views of the castle

and the moat.

Nijo Castle is open from 8:45 to 5

but the last admission is at 4

and the palace closes at 4 as well.

It is closed on Tuesdays in December, January, July, and August.

If a Tuesday is a national holiday,

the castle will also be closed on Wednesday.

The castle is also closed

December 26th through January 4th.

Early morning is the best time to visit

to avoid the crowds.

Admission is 600 Yen, cash only.

There is an ATM machine near the ticket office

if you need it.

The Nijo Castle is across the street from

Nijojo-mae Station.

Thank you for joining us at the Nijo Castle.

Consider subscribing

if you would like more concise travel videos

full of practical tips

and useful information.

Until next time, cheers!

The elaborate customized cars of Japan's 'lowriding' subculture - Duration: 7:38.

The elaborate customized cars of Japan's 'lowriding' subculture

Parked in a row, their undersides almost glancing the asphalt, these ornate and outsized American cars stand out in a sea of Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans and Subarus.

A gold-colored 1954 Chevrolet 210, christened "Sphinx," squats either side of "Eltesoro," a creamy green 1936 Dodge sedan, and "La Vida Rosa," a bright pink 1954 Mercury Monterey.

All three are customized vehicles belonging to one of Japan's oldest lowrider clubs -- Pharaohs. Lowriding was first popularized in southern California in the 1940s, when Mexican-Americans emblazoned US-made cars with vivid designs and colors, customizing them to cruise "low and slow.

As the culture expanded across the States in the decades after World War II, its appeal -- based on a marriage of mechanics and art -- also grew overseas.

In the mid-1980s, at the height of the country's bubble economy, Japanese car enthusiasts started importing models such as the Impala and the Chevrolet, replete with Chicano artwork and hydraulics.

Pharaohs member (and owner of the aforementioned "Sphinx") Hisashi Ushida, 46, first saw lowriders on the streets of Nagoya when he was in high school.

While he recalled being immediately hooked, Ushida didn't have the means to splash out on American cars. "Instead we bought small trucks and tried to remodel them like lowriders," Ushida said in a phone interview.

"Things got more genuine when I met the owner of Paradise Road, (an import and custom garage) run by Junichi Shimodaira.

He was the one who really showed me how to remodel and customize cars." A trans-Pacific partnership Shimodaira is considered a pioneer in lowrider circles on both sides of the Pacific.

After spending time in southern California in the early 1980s -- touring, meeting and connecting with lowriders -- the 58-year-old returned to Nagoya, a city with strong links to car manufacturing, and founded Pharaohs.

Nagoya was already known as the home of Lexus (and is within an hour's drive of Toyota City, where the eponymous carmaker assembled its first vehicle).

But Shimodeira was instrumental in promoting customization in the city, bringing a new flavor and car culture to its streets. For the members of Pharaohs, their regular get-togethers reflect the club's age.

"We go cruising, go for picnics and, occasionally, we have meet-ups and parties or barbecues with other car clubs," Ushida said.     With about 25 members, Pharaohs is fairly typical of Japan's male-dominated car clubs.

Ushida said that the groups' popularity peaked around the year 2000. But the culture still seems to have a strong and loyal following, and in 2003, he opened Cholos, a custom garage in Nagoya.

For Ushida, the attraction to lowriders is twofold: "There's the pleasure that comes with driving a cruiser but also the excitement that goes with customization." A 'spiritual connection' Having documented Japan's lowrider culture in Japan since 2001, 38-year-old photographer Luke Dorsett estimates that there are around 200 active clubs in the country.

Much like in east Los Angeles, lowriding in Japan offers a sense of community and identity, said Dorsett, who sees a "spiritual connection" between Chicano and Japanese cultures.

"You have two cultures that are into handcrafted art," the Phoenix-based photographer said in a phone interview. "They're both very oriented to detail.

"(Japanese lowriders) are thinking, 'I could shave my head, throw on some sunglasses, wear the clothes and I would fit right in,'" Dorsett said.

"They could be in L.A." Dorsett, who is producing a book about lowriding around the world, said that, in the beginning, Japan imported Californian lowrider culture wholesale. But eventually the motifs and symbols started to become more Japanese.

"When it first started in Japan, the cars would go over there and look exactly the same as in America.

They wouldn't modify them or change them that much, so the artwork on the cars would look like they were Chicano." "What ended up happening later was the artwork would depict the owner.

They started putting their own twist on it. That's been exciting to see." Culture club In Japan, just like the US, lowriding is about much more than the cars themselves.

For 49-year-old Shigeru Sato, a custom car shop owner from Toyonaka in Osaka prefecture, it was the wider culture surrounding lowriding that inspired him to set up his own club, Stylish Car Club.

"In America, lowrider culture is not only about customizing cars, it's about fashion, music, and family," said Sato, standing in the tidy garage where he keeps his Cadillac and Chevrolet Impala.

For Sato, whose son is also a lowrider, the generational ties are especially important.     At Stylish Car Club, which Sato established 20 years ago, it's not just about the cars but also a shared sense of culture.

Adhering to this principle this is a prerequisite for new members. "I want to be sure that anyone who joins is really immersed in the culture," Sato said.

"And I want them to not only enjoy customizing cars, but to also familiarize themselves with the fashion and music as well." But, as Sato acknowledges, showing off the stylized cars is still an important ritual for lowriders.

"Lowriders like the attention," Sato said. "We often cruise to Dottonbori in Osaka where it's crowded and you get a big audience. We might look a bit like gangsters, but we all have families and regular jobs. We just admire the culture.".

World Cup: Japan and Senegal draw 2-2 in enthralling Group H clash - Duration: 3:55.

World Cup: Japan and Senegal draw 2-2 in enthralling Group H clash

Midfielder Keisuke Honda has come off the bench to salvage a 2-2 draw for Japan against Senegal, as both teams were locked at the top of Group H following an entertaining encounter at the Ekaterinburg Arena.

Veteran Honda, 32, who became the first Japanese player to score in three different World Cups, replaced Shinji Kagawa in the second half with his team down 2-1 and fired the equaliser in 12 minutes from time after a bad error by Senegal goalkeeper Khadim N'Diaye.

Senegal thought it had won the match as Moussa Wague drilled the ball into the top of the net on 71 minutes to make it 2-1 after Sadio Mane's fortuitous first-half opener was cancelled out by Takashi Inui's curling shot.

But Honda ensured things ended level and deservedly so.

The result leaves both teams, who beat Colombia and Poland respectively in their opening matches, on four points from two games and within reach of a spot in the last 16.

Senegal began the match strongly and its robust defending neutralised any early threat that the Japanese front line posed, allowing its own attackers to push up in numbers.

The Africans went ahead in the 11th minute, although there was an element of luck to their goal.

A poor headed clearance landed right at Youssouf Sabaly's feet and although goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima managed to parry the defender's stinging shot from the left, the ball rebounded into the net off Mane's knee.

Forward Ismaila Sarr, who troubled Japan from the start with his pace and power on the right wing, was unlucky not to double Senegal's lead on 21 minutes as he volleyed into Kawashima's hands from close range.

Japan slowly regained composure and responded with a well-taken goal with its only shot on target in the opening period to level the score at 1-1.

Yuto Nagatomo controlled a long pass with a deft first touch before rolling the ball into the path of Inui, who cut in from the left and fired a curling shot past a diving N'Diaye.

Senegal appeared to step off the gas towards the end of the half, and the effects were still evident after the restart, as it resorted to long-range efforts that failed to test the Japanese goalkeeper.

The Senegalese nearly paid for allowing their opponents to run at them, as Yuya Osako narrowly failed to connect with a ball across the box on the hour mark before Inui's powerful shot struck the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.

Wague appeared to have ended hopes of a Japanese comeback as he drilled Sabaly's low cross into the top of the net to send Senegal's supporters into raptures.

But the Asians were not done and hit back again through Honda, who tapped in into an empty net after goalkeeper N'Diaye stepped off his line and failed to punch the ball away.
