My name is Dr Emma Alleyne I am the programme director of the MSc in Forensic

Psychology here at Kent. The key features of the MSc here at Kent would be that we

are one of the longest-running programmes in the country, we are well-established,

we have a reputation for producing high-level impactful research but we're

also practitioners and so we always look for ways for our research to make a

difference to the people that we are studying. Studying here at Kent as an MSc

student, you become a member of a community, we've got the Centre of

Research and Education in Forensic Psychology or how we call it CORE-FP so

as an MSc student you become a member with that Centre so you get an opportunity to

be involved not just in the teaching and the learning but involved in all the

activities that we have running here. Whether it's hosting conferences or

guest speakers, our students are integral to the running of the Centre but also

being based here at Kent we have state-of-the-art facilities so our

students get the opportunity to conduct research, innovative research, with a

variety of methods, laboratory equipment, we also have access to applied settings

so the NHS or prison service or probation so our students get an

opportunity to really explore some of the those kind of big questions or big

research questions that we find interesting and fascinating here. And all

of the academic members of staff here are research active and our MSc students

are massively involved in that research.

My research expertise looks at ways that

we can explain why people offend more broadly but specifically

I'm interested in why people harm animals so we tend to focus a lot on

interpersonal violence why people will commit assaults or acts of violence

against other people but animals who are equally as living as people are getting

overlooked so a lot of the time and I'm interested in if the same processes that

are involved in interpersonal violence or aggression are also active in those

who harm animals. And what does that tell us about their other types of offending

behaviour as well so as someone who engages in practice as well I'm interested in

what can we learn that we can implement so that people who engage in animal

cruelty or animal harm don't engage in that behaviour again or

any other types of offending behaviour.

One day later, two more members of that community a student and alumnus were killed in another mass shooting.

Northern Illinois University student Trevor Wehner and alumnus Clayton Parks were among those killed at an Aurora, Illinois, manufacturing business Friday in a who was being fired from his job.

They were killed a day after the Dekalb, Illinois, universitys bells to honor each of the students killed in a shooting on February 14, 2008.

That day, a former student opened fire, killing five and wounding more than a dozen others before killing himself.

Friday was Wehners first day as an intern at the Henry Pratt Co., according to a statement from the universitys president, Lisa Freeman. He was set to graduate this May with a degree in human resource management.

Parks worked as the human resources manager at Henry Pratt Co. He graduated from NIUs College of Business in 2014, the university said.

"Loss like this is devastating and senseless," Freeman said in the statement. "I ask our university community to please keep the Wehner and Parks families, friends and communities in your hearts and offer them caring thoughts."

Thursday was also the first anniversary of the shooting at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 students and staff dead.
