University funding: What does it buy for students? | IN 60 SECONDS - Duration: 1:21.
We often hear that public universities charge higher and higher tuition because
state policymakers have cut their funding. Some say then the way to bring
tuition down is to bring government funding up. Yet most research finds that
when state governments cut or increase funding to public universities,
the effect on tuition is quite weak. One rigorous study found that for every additional
dollar public universities received from taxpayers, tuition declined by only 26 cents.
So where's the money going? Well for one, a university could allocate a
budget increase to boost its own spending on new programs and services.
In this case, funding goes up, and university spending goes up, so tuition stays the same.
Now consider a university facing budget cuts. One 2018 study found that
universities often reduced their own spending instead of passing all the
budget cuts on to students through higher tuition.
The bottom line is: not all funding cuts are bad, and not all funding increases make tuition more affordable.
What do you think is driving tuition increases? Let us know in your comments.

The University of Memphis Career Services (Paige) - Our Students are "Something to Roar About" - Duration: 2:39.
So the first time I came to Career Services it was more like advising appointment for
me.
I had all of these things that I wanted to do and you look at my transcript and just
see all these different classes, but I was not exactly sure where I wanted to go with
it, so I met with Sandy and she was like these are all the things that you can do, and she
knew that I was interested in psychology and politics and she was like how can we combine
this, how can we make your resume and your G.P.A. look as good as possible so that you
are competitive in this process, so that was really reassuring.
Over the last year some of the services I used were mock interviews, which came really
in handy for me especially because I had never done a professional interview before and they
were like you know we can record it and so you can see yourself doing it, and I was like
absolutely not, you are not going to record it, but it was still helpful, like, she was
like these are some of the questions that you will be asked.
You know people have a hard time like answering questions, tell me about yourself, or talk
about a challenge that you faced, so being able to talk through those before I actually
did the interview was extremely helpful.
So I think one of the most important things to remember when you are trying to achieve
academic goals is that usually you are not going to do it well the first time.
For me, my first year was a disaster, like I lost a scholarship and transferred to Memphis,
so bringing up my G.P.A. and just trying not to be so hard on myself, but figuring out
who I was and learning from that failure was so important.
And I have had a lot of experiences like that, like if I could say anything about academic
success, it is that it is made up of multiple failures before you get there, so just to
keep trying, keep looking for opportunities and utilizing services like Career Services
is so important and so to be able to come up to his office and have the room to make
mistakes but also be able to build up your confidence at the same time is amazing because
it carries you so far.
So it was really a place I was able to come and just relax a little bit.
So the fellowship I will be working in is with the Charles Koch Institute and getting
into that job process was kind of difficult because it is in Washington D.C., and so I
was doing everything from here and so I think getting that fellowship would not have happened
if it were not for being up here and practicing.
I would absolutely recommend it for that reason and these are services that you are paying
for with your tuition anyway so you should definitely take advantage of them.}

Slavery probe at £1.2m home of University lecturer after man kept in garden shed for four years - Duration: 7:10.
A slavery probe is underway at the £1.2m home of a university lecturer after a man was found in "degrading and disgusting" conditions in a garden shed
The man, a Polish national, told police he had been forced to work in exchange for food, and that he had been sleeping on a plastic sun lounger in a shed at the bottom of the garden, with no working toilet
He said his kitchen only comprised a barbecue and a fridge. Police were alerted after NHS staff at a walk-in centre he attended raised the alarm
The couple arrested for the alleged abuse were named locally as Pritpal Binning, 56, and her 54 year old husband Palvinder, who have been having an extension done on their home in the leafy village Chilworth, near Southampton
They were arrested in a raid on their home by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), who were assisted by Hampshire Police, and have been released pending further investigation
Tony Byrne, GLAA senior investigating officer, said: "First and foremost, we are pleased that the man is now receiving the help and support he so desperately needs
In the 21st century, no-one should be forced to live in such degrading and disgusting conditions
"Following the two arrests we made, our investigation is ongoing as we examine and assess the evidence we collected from the property
"I would also like to praise the NHS staff who reported their concerns. It's really important that people get in touch if they believe someone is being exploited
"By contacting us, we can ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in society are protected and supported
" Mrs Binning, a lecturer in health sciences at the University of Southampton refused to comment on her and her husband's arrest
Speaking at her home, she said: "I know why you're here. We're not going to talk
"You just want a story, I'm not going to talk about it." A male neighbour in his 40s, said he had seen a white man working around the five-bedroom property but was shocked to hear of the allegations about the 'nice' couple
He said: "I did go round there once, a few years back. They've lived here for at least 20 years - they were certainly nice when I went round there
"I saw the police there the other day and one of the vans actually parked outside my house for a little while
"It's shocked me hearing what has been reported to have happened. "I have seen a white guy walking past my house with a trailer full of rubbish
"He stopped to talk to my gardener once and she [Pritpal] came out and told him off for chatting
"The house has changed a lot now, the building work has been going on for about a year now but that particular man was around before that
" A barely-started breeze block extension sits at the top of the driveway, with two parked cars - one a high-powered Lexus GS saloon - in front of a garage which is set underneath the house
The breeze block shed, which the Polish man claimed to have been forced to live, was visible in one corner of the garden
Mrs Binning has worked at the University of Southampton Faculty of Health Sciences since 1998
She describes her area of expertise as 'Adult Nursing specialising respiratory, cadiovascular and high dependency care'
In 2013 a University newsletter commended her, noting 'congratulations to Pritpal Binning who has passed her Masters in Education with a stunning 82 per cent'
Test Valley District Commander Chief Inspector Kory Thorne said: "Instances of modern day slavery in the Test Valley are rare
"However, when information is received suggesting someone is being subjected to modern day slavery we will work with partner agencies to investigate and where necessary take action against those people responsible
" Hampshire Police refused to confirm the names of those arrested when contacted

Oxford University Union facing growing pressure to 'no-platform' far-right AfD leader Alice Weidel - Duration: 3:42.
The Oxford Union is facing growing pressure to revoke a "grossly irresponsible" speaking invitation to a far-right German politician
Alice Weidel, 39, is the leader of Alternative for Germany (AfD), the largest opposition party in the German parliament, and is due to speak at the Union next Wednesday
However, an open letter signed by University of Oxford students, professors and alumni is calling on the Union "to show duty of care and respect for Oxford's diverse communities" and cancel the talk
The letter, organised by the Oxford Labour Muslim Network, argues that "platforming hate speech must not be conflated with freedom of speech" and that the Union "has frequently been on the wrong side of history by platforming far right extremists
" The timing of the event has attracted further criticism, following the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting on Saturday where 11 Jewish people were killed by a far-right anti-Semite
Paul Betts, Professor of Modern European History at St Antony's College, said: "This is an irresponsible and ill-timed invitation
"Her party's anti-Muslim race-baiting politics has no place in a city which prides itself on tolerance, diversity and aversion to extremisms of all kinds
" Ms Weidel, who has been the leader of the party since April 2017, is a strong critic of Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door immigration policy, last year telling an online German newspaper that the country will be "destroyed" by an influx of "illiterate" immigrants
A spokeswoman for the Oxford Union said that the Union remains "committed to the principles of political neutrality and free speech"
They continued: "We invite a variety of political leaders from different countries and competing ideological camps
In recent years, those perspectives featured and questioned at the Union have ranged from Julius Malema, leader of the radically leftist Economic Freedom Fighters in South Africa, to Marine Le Pen
"Alice Weidel is the leader of the largest opposition party in the German Parliament
After Dr Weidel's speech in the Union's debating Chamber, members will be welcome to ask her questions, and challenge her views if they wish

How to create a variable in the SAS University Edition? - Duration: 2:42.
Hello, I'm Johanna Aalto and in this video I'm going to show you how to create a new categorial variable in the SAS University Edition.
This video continues the lesson in the previous video, called How to import data from URL to the SAS University Edition.
Let's start!
From the upper link you can find the data we use in this example.
This video link shows you how to import that data to SAS.
Let's create a new categorial variable, called "marrstat", such that
1 for single female, 2 for single male, 3 for married female and 4 for married male.
We create a new data set, called "b". It's not a good name, because it's not describing.
But we keep it here because it's simple.
Using set statement, we can read data from existing data set called a.
Then we create a new variable called marrstat.
The dot is used to represent a missing value of variable. There are no values yet.
Let's continue to if-then statements.
With these statements we give values to marrstat.
For example, if a person is a female but not married, status will be 1.
If the person is not female and not married, status will be 2 - and so on.
What does the values zero and one tell us?
You can find the descriptions from link in the blue box.
On the output data we can see the values.
On the first row we have a female, not married. On the second row female, married.
On the third a male, not married. On the fourth row male, married - and so on.
Let's run the program by clicking the running person.
Note, that in the output data we have table "a" open.
Be sure, you have a right table open. In this case table "b".
And here are results. On the third column we can find variable "marrstat".
Always check that you wrote your statements correctly and got the right results.
Thank you for watching. More videos coming.
