Chief Commissioner, honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen... about a year and a half

ago my mom asked me if I would speak to all of you about something very hard for

me to talk about at first I hesitated but only for a moment because I

understood and have witnessed firsthand the importance of supporting victims of

crime I came to this gala last year as volunteer and realized that this was one

way of making something good come out of something horrible besides when you're

young you feel if you don't have a voice so I guess I should say thank you for

giving me the chance to share mine and speak for all the young people who like

me have been affected by crime

the truth is some of you are very intimidating not just because I'm 15

because I know you the power you have to make a difference if only idea ability

to improve the lives of someone else just by coming to an event like this on

January 1st 2008 when I was just six years old I got the worst news of my

life my mom came into my room she had been crying I was doing her best not to

she sounded edge of my bed and somehow I was trying to tell me that my older

sister had gone to heaven because she'd been attacked by someone with a knife

and I died I couldn't believe it and I didn't understand how could this be

I had just here a couple hours before she went to a friend's house I had so

many unanswered questions but I knew one thing life was different and nothing

would ever be the same my mom did her best to answer my

questions and to reassure me that I was safe and loved and nothing will change

that it had changed and when I went back to bed that night I was both very sad

and terrified I felt somehow as though I were free falling into a bottomless pit

for a long time my nights were full of nightmares but mom had promised to keep

me safe but she hadn't kept my sister safe so what's that actually mean when I

eventually asked her I knew somehow that I just made things worse and even harder

for her even though if she tried to hide it I knew she was heartbroken but I

didn't know what to do or say that's of our responsibility for six-year-olds as

the days went by I saw the struggle to normalize their lives I remember going

to school and seeing the other parents not speaking to my mom the usual morning

conversations as we learned of her kindergarten weren't happening even

though my mom tried to smile a lot naturally I felt really angry about that

I also felt different than other kids at school and found myself pulling back

into her shell my mom tried to explain to me that people weren't trying to be

mean to us they just didn't know what to say they were really scared that they

would say or do something and make it all worse and will make us cry or get

angry a few years later my mum was taking a

course from moving from post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth and

one of the things she had to do was write an e-book on something to do with

her experiences as a victim she decided to write a book of advice to friends and

families of people who are grieving she explained to people that they didn't

need to say anything they just needed to be there and gave losted what of advice

and how to help in practical ways that really made life easier for the victim

I've often been told that I'm a grown-up in a kid's body sometimes I want to

scream back and tell people that my childhood was told for me and I had to

grow up too fast but what good would it do as the months and then years went by

I had a better understanding of what had happened and the effort it took my

parents to support us in their young lives

I had a 12 year old and a two and a half year brother at the time my older

brother had some very dark times one day at school he had a psychotic breakdown

which terrified everyone he saw things that weren't real and thought that he

was going to die and physically acted them out without

being conscious of it his teacher didn't know what to do I needed to my mom she

also didn't hang with his friends anymore he said there were childish we

turned into it as a family and maybe that was a good thing a good thing

excited a good family one day when the front page of a newspaper had a picture

of my sister and the girl who killed her someone brought it to school apparently

their parents thought I might want to see it well I hadn't seen it on the bus

ride home everyone was asking my brother and I

that happened and for some reason they seem to think the whole thing was funny

and that really hurt I didn't want my mom to know because I felt like I needed

to protect her she was she was protecting us from the media and when

she found out they made her really angry things like this would happen too often

and each time it made to hurt worse just when things were starting to get better

it also brought back the fear it was bad for me but so much worse for my older

brother a few months ago three of my friends were robbed at knifepoint I

think it affected me worse than them I so easily could have been with them that

afternoon and I don't know how I would have reacted I thought about that a

thousand times thank goodness I could go home and talk to my parents I was so

lucky to be born to the family that I have they taught us not to be afraid to

ask for help and they knew where to go for that help and so we learned how to

look forward instead of living in the past

there are families who are less fortunate maybe there are marginalized

or lacking the skills and support to get through each day trauma takes over your

brain and your ability to thing properly victim services Toronto is a lifeline

but there are how we can get through each day and eventually those days turn

into months and then years they support families and then the parents have more

strength to help the kids if my parents had fallen apart or split up I don't

know how I'd be today

did you know that when a child is a victim of homicide many times those

parents end up living apart I know that parents put up I fall often these days

and most kids are fine as long as his head as well at the time I think would

have made my brothers and I feel really really helpless and scared they're our

kids I know we're lost they've had bad stuff happens and can't seem to get it

together I worry about them and them and I care about the impact their actions

have on others if they don't get the help they will just keep getting worse

but something will get hurt what if that hurts someone else I'd love you have the

power to make a difference you're so lucky

not only will others listen to you but they will take what you have to say

seriously I know everybody has their own problems you're so smart successful kind

and generous people and I know that because you're here please stretch

beyond their comfort level and give as much as you can to help kids like me the

thing is you never know when you or someone you might you know might need

help most my parents were police officers I never ever thought that their

daughter would be murdered I support my family my family received has given us

all the strength to pay it forward this is my first step on behalf of my sister

Stephanie and all the other victims thank you for allowing me to feel as if

I'm making a difference through you and Ty the mean to do it myself thank you

The University of Memphis Career Services (Paige) - Our Students are "Something to Roar About" - Duration: 2:39.

So the first time I came to Career Services it was more like advising appointment for

me.

I had all of these things that I wanted to do and you look at my transcript and just

see all these different classes, but I was not exactly sure where I wanted to go with

it, so I met with Sandy and she was like these are all the things that you can do, and she

knew that I was interested in psychology and politics and she was like how can we combine

this, how can we make your resume and your G.P.A. look as good as possible so that you

are competitive in this process, so that was really reassuring.

Over the last year some of the services I used were mock interviews, which came really

in handy for me especially because I had never done a professional interview before and they

were like you know we can record it and so you can see yourself doing it, and I was like

absolutely not, you are not going to record it, but it was still helpful, like, she was

like these are some of the questions that you will be asked.

You know people have a hard time like answering questions, tell me about yourself, or talk

about a challenge that you faced, so being able to talk through those before I actually

did the interview was extremely helpful.

So I think one of the most important things to remember when you are trying to achieve

academic goals is that usually you are not going to do it well the first time.

For me, my first year was a disaster, like I lost a scholarship and transferred to Memphis,

so bringing up my G.P.A. and just trying not to be so hard on myself, but figuring out

who I was and learning from that failure was so important.

And I have had a lot of experiences like that, like if I could say anything about academic

success, it is that it is made up of multiple failures before you get there, so just to

keep trying, keep looking for opportunities and utilizing services like Career Services

is so important and so to be able to come up to his office and have the room to make

mistakes but also be able to build up your confidence at the same time is amazing because

it carries you so far.

So it was really a place I was able to come and just relax a little bit.

So the fellowship I will be working in is with the Charles Koch Institute and getting

into that job process was kind of difficult because it is in Washington D.C., and so I

was doing everything from here and so I think getting that fellowship would not have happened

if it were not for being up here and practicing.

I would absolutely recommend it for that reason and these are services that you are paying

for with your tuition anyway so you should definitely take advantage of them.}

Harinder Takhar, PayTM, CEO: Migrating to Digital Services - Duration: 2:06.

Now PayTM is India-based and you manage to get a slice of the huge FinTech pie

that is in India. Tell us how you managed to do that.

We started PayTM in 2009. We named it as PayThrough Mobile. I think one of the things

that worked in our favor was that we took a bet- a couple of bets, actually. The

first one was that the country would move to a mobile interface. And the other

bet that we took was digital payments would happen ubiquitously. So over the

last few years we spent a lot of money and investment into this particular area.

Keeping the consumer happy with the interface is extremely important to us

and I think those are the top reasons why I think we've done what we've done.

And what's a regulation like in India versus here in the U.S., for example, when

it comes to FinTech?

The edge in India, I would say, over the U.S. is that the

regulation is pretty centralized. In India, for instance, to do a wallet or a

banking license there is one license that you need to work with, as opposed to

the U.S. where, you know, 50 states and roughly 50 licenses that you have to

worry about. The other thing is that I think India is way ahead- open banking is

a conversation that happens sometimes in London and also in North America. In

India it's a reality. There are several apps that you can use to bank with

whichever you want.

And what are your thoughts with regards to APIs and the

industry trend towards more open APIs?

So open APIs is are actually extremely

useful for the end-user. I think it opens up a lot more competitive options

for the end consumers. And so at the end of the day it is actually a

beautiful thing. So I think opening up APIs, allowing the consumer a much

better choice than what they ever had before is absolutely a wonderful thing

for the whole economy as well.

Hariner, thank you very much.

Thank you.

Programs and Services Accessed by NYS Managers and CSEA Leaders - Duration: 4:05.

- It's a win-win-win. It's a win for the state,

it's a win for labor and it's a win for management.

- A real win-win not only for the employee,

but for the employer as well.

- The program itself is a win-win situation for both sides.

- [Narrator] Throughout the years, the New York State

and CSEA Partnership for Education and Training

has been creating win-wins for both state agencies

and CSEA-represented employees across the state.

This unique partnership continues to promote increased

career mobility, workplace health and safety, and job

satisfaction while building strong labor-management

relationships between New York State managers

and CSEA leaders.

Its ongoing commitment to providing a positive

work-life experience for CSEA-represented employees

has produced a highly motivated and skilled

workforce, dedicated to excellence in public service.

Here are just a few examples of what can be accomplished

when labor and management work together to achieve

its common goals.

- We reached out to the Partnership for

Labor-Management Committee Training because we

were starting a new committee here and then it

also gives people avenues to express any concerns

that they have or any ideas for improving the workplace.

- We hit the ground running, but since we've had

the training we were able to make some real positive impacts

on work life inside of our office.

Things that normally wouldn't come up for me,

that I wouldn't be aware of I was able to find

out by interacting with labor directly and the training

has basically given us the groundwork for the way

that we interact with each other which it was good before,

but now it's even better.

- I've been a supporter of the

Applied Skills Trades Program for at least 12 years.

It's been a great value on two different campuses.

Our employees are our biggest investment and having

that investment to move forward with is key.

We can promote from within.

We have employees now who already know the campus,

who are ready to go to work in whatever trade they

have selected when that opportunity arises.

So it helps us grow our own in a rather minimal labor pool.

- It's a game changer for us, as far as new employees that

come in and a good recruitment tool.

When they come in at the ground level,

they want to have some type of career at the job

and not many other facilities or even companies offer

this type of training.

The new employee, like I said, gains a career.

But for the seasoned employee,

now it's an extra trade under their belt.

Also as far as when you have a project on hand, now you

have an employee that's multi-skilled.

You can use that employee's skill set to get that job done.

- One of the great things about the Partnership is

the fact that it provides an alternative

funding method for agencies.

It's really essential that employees that deal

with high-voltage electrical energies that they are properly

trained and that their equipment is tested.

Due to budget constraints, our agency may not have

the funding available to bring in an outside trainer

for much needed safety and health training so with the

Partnership grants that money is there, it's available now.

And it's something that all CSEA locals should be

taking advantage of because it's a tremendous program.

- Partnership and a Quality of Life Grants Program is a great

program to have with the parks because we have a lot

of employees that utilize the grants for recognition,

as well as break room improvements for appliances,

microwaves, ice makers for refrigerators.

We don't have a lot of time on lunch, we have a half hour

it's tough to get to a store.

There's not a lot of stores close.

The Quality of Life Grant Program worked out great, because

we were able to apply for that back in May

to get an ice maker.

We got the ice maker and it's been utilized ever since.

I emphasize this program all the time,

I talk about it all the time.

Every time I'm eligible to get a grant, I apply for one.

It's a very easy process.

- It's a great feeling knowing that I have the Partnership

backing me to help me succeed in life.

- They are always there for you to help you out

and meet you anywhere you wanna be.

- They want you to know that they're proud

of what you also accomplished.

- [Narrator] Since its establishment in 2001,

The New York State and CSEA Partnership

for Education and Training

has been fully committed to its mission

of providing a positive work life experience

to all CSEA-represented New York State employees.

The Partnership's wide range of programs and services

gives CSEA-represented employees like you

the opportunity to increase your career mobility,

work place health and safety, and job satisfaction,

while preparing for future workforce needs.

It also provides the support, encouragement,

and tools needed to professionally succeed

and further your career.

Here are just a few examples of how the Partnership

is positively impacting

CSEA-represented employees across the state.

The online learning classes are very convenient

for somebody like myself who is very,

very busy at her job.

I'm always on the go with the phones and the mail

and the paperwork.

I'm able to do these classes around my schedule.

The Partnership online program has helped me in my career

because it's helped me to have better

customer service skills.

I've learned to take a step back

and actually try to hear what they're saying

versus just stepping and jumping right in

and giving my perspective.

I feel very supported by the Partnership,

even after taking the courses.

I still get emails from the Partnership

with different courses they offer,

and different techniques,

even after the class I've taken,

and they always are asking if there's any classes

that we might want offered or help with anything.

- The reason I have taken the Skills for Success programs

is to help me further my career.

I would like to go from my current title to supervision.

Work is being driven with computers now,

and I felt a need for me to catch up

and bring myself up to current standards.

So through the Partnership, I've been able to take classes

in computer skills, effective writing skills,

punctuation and grammar.

It's going to help me down the road

to achieve my goals of becoming a supervisor,

but it also helps me on a personal level.

I still have young children at home

that are using computers

and it's helping me keep up to speed with them.

- The Partnership's Tuition Benefit Program

was very helpful to me when I decided to get my LPN.

I could call the advisors and they would be very helpful

in leading me in the right direction

to help with the tuition benefit.

Also, they could help with my testing.

Mostly finances, which was definitely an ease on my mind

because it was an expensive program.

And even afterwards, she's contacted me to make sure

I enjoyed the program,

if everything worked out well for me with my schooling

and my job and things.

With the basic trainings that we have,

I took advantage of many programs.

One of those was a speakers for non-English

and the pronunciation helped me in the test,

which I passed with a high score,

I was able to get a promotion to grade 11.

It makes me very happy.

After a year, I became permanent

and I was able to take advantage of another promotion

to the University of Albany.

In the beginning, when I thought I gonna take these classes

I was, I'm going back to school,

but it's not like you're going back to school,

its enrich all you have.

MVC Disability Support Services - Duration: 3:14.

DSS is a program that provides academic adjustments to students who have

documented disabilities so that they can have the full college experience.

We ensure equal access to education regardless of what your disability is.

Our job is to make ourselves out of a job by

making them as independent as possible

so they can be successful not only in the classroom, but outside the class.

Disability Support Services is committed to providing equal access

to educational opportunities to students with disabilities.

DSS motivates students and encourages academic achievement,

independence and self-advocacy.

To qualify to be a part of the DSS program, you must obtain a

documented disability such as:

acquired brain injury, developmental disabilities,

learning disabilities, psychological disabilities,

temporary disabilities, health impairments,

hearing impairments, mobility or visual impairments,

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,

autism, as well as other disabilities.

DSS has served individuals with disabilities for forty-five years

and will continue to serve these students

to provide equal access to education

by reducing barriers.

In the DSS office, there is academic advising

and disability-related counseling specially made for you.

To students who qualify, DSS provides

accommodations in the high-tech center such as additional test time and

advanced adaptive technology.

DSS offers a special support group for students

with autism and social anxiety.

SAILS teaches academic and independent living skills

by connecting students to on-campus resources.

DSS also accommodates to your needs in the classroom.

Students who obtain special accommodations

should fill out a "Request for Academic Adjustment" form

and submit it to the DSS office.

This may include:

sign language interpreters for the classroom

and campus appointments,

real-time captioning for class lectures,

note-taking or scribe assistance,

and even adaptive equipment loans

and training on how to properly use these technologies.

We provide academic adjustments that address

a student's individual disability and make sure that

they have equal access to all the educational opportunities

that are available.

There's not just one avenue of potentially

giving a student the opportunity to learn in one way.

There are so many high school students with documented disabilities

that never even dream of attending college

so we just want them to know that

our department is here to support them.

DSS takes pride in the acceptance of diversity

and they are here to help you.
