Need to Know in 90: Self Regulation - Duration: 2:39.

Disregulation is when students have a

difficult time managing their behaviors

and emotions. Typically they're reacting

to rather than responding to daily

stressors and difficult situations that

they're in whether those be big or small.

That can be caused by fear, anxiety,

frustration, sadness, or even anger when

students disregulate it shows in either

small very low-level ways, like they're

crying, they can become withdrawn, even

refusal to talk and make eye contact.

But these behaviors can also be very big and

large, like acting silly, being a very

hyper in class, becoming argumentative,

and even being aggressive in their

behavior. These are the behaviors that

really disrupt, not only their learning,

but the learning environment, which is

why it's important that we teach kids

how to self-regulate and the first step

in that is for them to understand how

their brains are working. We use a hand

model to show them this is the

prefrontal cortex. This is the thinking

part of our brain. It helps us make all

the good decisions and good choices.

Inside we have what's called the

hippocampus. This is the remembering part

of our brain. It keeps all of our memories

and our new learning. Then we have the

amygdala, which is the feeling part of

our brain. This keeps all of our emotions

even the strong ones so when students

are faced with stress or in a difficult

situation their emotions can get pretty

big. This happens to all of us and

typically we can calm ourselves down.

However when those emotions get really

large, that's what we call flipping our

lid, and we're no longer using the

thinking part of our brain, which is here.

We were functioning off a pure emotion

and this is where we are reacting rather

than responding. And this is where we see

those high levels of behavior which is

why it's important to get kids to be

able to de-escalate and to self-regulate

and one of the ways that we teach kids

to do that is to use their breath as an

anchor to keep themselves calm. When we

become angry our breathing becomes very

short and very quick,

which is why when we have kids focus on

their breath and being very mindful we

can get them to begin to calm their

brains and get back into that rational

thinking part. When they're controlling

their breath they're also being able to

control their emotions and therefore

being able to learn in the classroom.

Girls, Girls, Girls, Self Esteem, Paradigms & Taking Control of Your Life - Duration: 20:18.

hello and welcome to big life big dreams this is Sheryl Gipson I'm here I'm your

coach on your consultant I am your girl that's here to help you have a better

life to live a big life in a big dream that's right the name of my company is

called big life big dreams and the reason why is because I want you to have

that big life that you could possibly be dreaming of you can actually make it a

reality and I'm here to tell you exactly how to do that so welcome to our podcast

so today what we're going to be discussing is a topic that's really near

and dear to my heart and of course being a woman it's going to be women and you

know how they have that me too movement going on right now I want to take the

time to give a shout out at an appreciation to all the women that had

the courage to stand up despite what was going on and actually speak your truth

so congratulations to you hey I got your back girl I understand there has been so

many of us women that have dealt wood harassment for so long and have been

quiet about it and a lot of situations has been where we actually believe you

know what it's just been something that I've been dealing with all my life is

just a part of life you know what it really is something that should not be a

part of life it shouldn't be something that we're quiet about and I know after

speaking to a lot of men that seem to have a really different opinion about

this situation now don't get me wrong there's some men that are right there

cheering us on and they're rooting for us and they want us to be strong in what

we're doing and they actually have our backs and they are for us however there

are some guys that are actually looking at the me2 movement as a situation

that's against men man I'm here to tell you we love you

we need you we need your help we need your support if you're a legit man then

if you see a wrong being done to someone else male or female you're gonna speak

up and you're going to speak out about it man

men we're asking that you continue to back us up have our back speak up speak

out for us support us talk to other men let them know that that behavior is

unacceptable that it is not okay to put your hands on a woman unless she gives

you permission to do that you do not have the right to put your hands on a

woman and you don't have the right to speak to a woman any type of way just as

a woman doesn't have a right to speak to you any type of way so it's really about

respect honoring one another having care compassion and love for one another but

I don't want to get off off topic and what's off topic for me or rather what

should be on topic for me is about trying to help one that women big life

big dreams is all about trying to help women and to empower them giving them

the tools that they need so that they can succeed in life that they can turn

their victim hoods in some cases to victorious that you actually do and can

be whatever it is that you truly want to be and can have in this life what's

going on and what's actually was one thing that was important to me about

getting into the self development field and actually speaking up and on behalf

of women was that there's such a concern going on with our ladies with our young

girls that self-esteem they have poor self-esteem and with social media that

has basically taken control and over a lot of our lives and especially our

young people's life so many of them they go straight to social media to actually

validate them and that is so sad when you think about getting validation and

that you have to get it from social media so that means I have to make sure

them part of all the different social media things

which are Facebook Instagram I think they have snapchat as well there's many

different uses of social media however just as it can be used for good it can

be used for harm also and unfortunately a lot of our young girls are being

harmed I heard a statistic recently and that's what moved me to actually go

ahead and do this podcast is that I actually heard recently that 75% it's up

75% suicide for women suicide for young girls and that's so sad and the reason

why is because of social media I want you to think especially those that are

around my age if you're anywhere 35 and up and I'm far removed from 35 you guys

I'm just using that trying to become but if you're anywhere 35 and up then you

know that back in the day we didn't have use of all the different social media

channels so and women still girls still had a hard time with self-esteem just

from the different images we look at magazines and know that these magazines

are airbrushed however we don't know that when we're young so we're looking

at these images of these perfect bodies these perfect skin perfect hair perfect

everything and we're wanting to be like that we're longing to be like that and

we're comparing ourselves to these images that actually are not even real

they're not real images they've airbrushed these images but like I said

we have no idea that they're airbrushed these images and then when you look at

these things and we're comparing ourselves we want to look like that and

especially when you're a teenager and your hormones are going crazy a part of

being a teenager and your hormones and growing in everything is sometimes you

get acne so then you're dealing with skin issues and all type of things but

yet they're showing you all these perfect images of people and it's just

not true it's not real but when you don't know any better you suffer

and it's so sad that social media has taken on this part as far as young

ladies are they're looking for the validation I'm understanding that what's

going on is that they will post a picture or something of themselves and

then wait to get a like can you imagine waiting to see if somebody actually

likes something that you just posted that you're waiting for that approval

and god forbid if somebody disapproves of it and how that's really taken a hit

on the self-esteem of our young girls so what I wanted to do was to first bring

it to the attention that this was actually going on in the first place cuz

I was actually shocked but I always knew that self-esteem was an issue I had poor

self-esteem as a young girl and because of help when you have poor self-esteem

you make poor choices and I definitely made some poor choices I learned from

those choices now but I had to go through it what I'm hoping to do is to

help those not have to have such a hard life you don't have to go through some

trouble because of having poor self-esteem and so I want to give you

some tools and one tool that I know is very beneficial to helping your

self-esteem is actually just looking at all the wonderful beautiful qualities

that you actually do have the type of person that you are the type of person

that you want to be and then you can actually carve out and create that

person and become that person that's the beauty about self development I really

wish that I had found self development a lot younger when I was in my teenage

years because lord knows I certainly could have used it because I use it

right now and many many others use self development and what self development

does it just helps you have a better understanding of you you who believe me

you are the most important person not other people you are the most important

person the way that you think the way that you

feel and so it's really important that we learn to think properly that we learn

to utilize this beautiful beautiful tool that we have right here and it's a

wonderful tool but when you don't know how to operate it then it's just like

having the keys to the cup to a car and you don't know how to operate it you

don't know how to go forward you don't know how to go backward you don't know

what gears work how to shift this or that well

self development shows you how to actually gain control over your emotions

so that you do make better decisions and so that you can have a better happier

fulfilled life that you're not looking outward for approval from others that

you can actually look inward create and become and do what you want to do and be

that person that you want to be you can actually create that person knowing that

you have those tools and those abilities should actually warm your heart make you

happy make you optimistic give you hope let you know that there that the world

is open to you that there is so much in front of you that you can do and you can

do it right now so what I want you to do is actually do just that I want you to

write out that perfect person who's that person that you look up to what are the

characteristics that that person has write them down something about the

power of writing things down actually gives it energy and that energy attracts

like energy and try it it's gonna work for you we want to use the power of

Attraction we want to attract the good things in life and know that although

there might be others out there they're struggling just like you are that are

having issues with self-esteem but they're too quiet they don't want to say

anything me this is one of those things that people don't like to talk about I

know I didn't want to talk about it when I was young that's for sure sometimes I

still don't want to talk about it but I do talk about it because you know

what it's empowering I know who I was and now I know who I am and I know where

I'm going and so what you have to do is actually create a map you have to create

a goal for your life of what you want and then you set out and you actually

make a plan to achieve them and then you just do it and you get the support of

people that have your back they want to see you succeed that want the best for

you that's what you do so once again what I wanted to talk about today was

about how social media how it could be positive but how it could actually be

negative and how unfortunately a lot of our young ladies are are having poor

self-esteem however the bad thing about having poor self-esteem is that Elise

too poor choices and sometimes when you feel as if you're hopeless and that

there's nowhere to go to a know where to turn sometimes people go that extra

length and they go to suicide and I'm here to tell you suicide should not be

an option I want you to choose life I want you to choose love I want you to

choose hope I want you to choose the life that you want and that you desire

to have but I'm here to help you get that and the way that you do that is

that you just take control you take charge over your situation you take

charge over your emotions so I will be hosting some more classes that I will be

hosting here on YouTube I have hosted some other classes I welcome you to take

a look at some of my other podcasts that I do have and that I will be airing that

actually goes into our 14 emotions we have 14 emotions seven positive and

seven negative and if we can learn how to get a handle over our emotions then

we can learn how to get a handle over our life so I want you to know that life

is yours you can have a wonderful life you have beautiful choices in front of

you I want you to choose correctly I want you to get in front of people that

got your back that want to see you succeed that want the best for you I

want you to choose out and actually begin to carve out the type of life that

you want to have that's right this my podcast is for people that are

teenagers that are not even teenagers that are preteens because you know what

knowledge is power when you use it so I'm going to give you

the knowledge so that you can then actually activate the power that you

have within yourself so that you can put it into action and then become and do

and have things that you want to have be it you want more money you want better

relationships you want more love in the situation you want better health better

fitness these are tools that can actually help you and what we have to do

is learn about the things that God is there in the first place and one of

those things that gets us there you guys is the way that we're wired the way that

we think about things our paradigm a paradigm is a collection of habits that

we have gotten from heredity customs religion peers it ends up being a

collection of habits that sometimes they serve you well and sometimes they don't

serve you at all and what we have to do is look at the things that are not

serving us get rid of those things and then replace them with actions

activities and habits that are actually good for us and will actually help us

achieve the goals that we are after and that will actually lead to a happier

harmonious life so I like I said I just wanted to go over what was holding down

my girls and let you know that there is hope for you I want you to start

businesses I want you to start writing down your goals I want you to write down

exactly what it is that you want I want you to look at yourself I want you to

see the beautiful person that you are our self-image means a lot you guys what

we think about ourselves means a whole lot if you think poorly of yourself then

you're going to end up making a lot of poor choices but if you begin to think

about the powerful person that you are and I'm here to tell you you are

powerful you and the human the thing that's different that sets us apart from

other animals the four-legged animal that walk the earth the thing that makes

us so superior is that we have the ability to decide we have the ability to

make decisions and choices that can actually benefit us you guys so I'm

asking you to actually make the choice of writing down goals that can actually

set you on the path so that you can get the things that you want to have and

once you actually set those goals then you will be able to develop a plan don't

worry about the plan yet just set the goals and I want you to set the goals

and the way that if money was not an option money and resources was not an

option what goals is it that you would want to achieve what is the person that

you want to be and I want you to write those goals for the next month I want

you to write them for six months I want you to write them for 12 months then I

want you to write them for three years and then five years we all need to have

the goals that are written that way so I want you to write them down and know

that they are obtainable and I'm going to show you how to get them what you

need to know when you get ready to set a goal and go after your goal is that

first thing is that you have to be willing and able to go after it so let's

get ready let's get able and let's go after our goals and if you feel like

you're ready willing and able to change your life I'm going to give you the

tools that you need so that you can do that and it starts right here so by all

means start writing down those goals please know that yes our paradigms have

messed with us in the past we're going to learn how to utilize our paradigms

with repetition the more you do something the better you get at it and

you actually become a master and an expert so it was repetition that got us

into this how we develop that habit and it is repetition that is going to change

that habit so that's what you have to do you have to change that habit you have

to change that behavior so I told you about goal-setting and I told you about

paradigms and I told you how you can actually

change your paradigm with repetition you have to do it over and over again I want

you to write it out I want you to see it it's the power of writing actually

brings like attraction and remember I'm not thinking it's a results coach I do

believe in the law of attraction I do believe in the laws of the universe and

there's more than one law and I'm here to teach you about them all so by all

means have a wonderful day please make sure that you subscribe like share this

information with others I plan on having more things for young ladies and you

know what I want to help young ladies actually start businesses the name of my

business is actually called big life big dreams and big life big dreams is about

turning your passions into profits so my girls I want you to figure out your

passion what is it that lights you up what makes you happy what turns you on

and how can you spread that joy and then message to others and then what we're

going to do is we're actually going to monetize it that's right we're going to

monetize it so that you can make money at it you can profit at it what we're

gonna do is actually set goals and set your life on the path of joy and

happiness so that you not only help yourself you help others so get with big

life big dreams once again I want you to think about your passion so we can turn

that into profit and know that we can actually turn your dreams into reality

it all starts with the way that you actually see yourself it is your

self-image I want you to see yourself in charge I want you to see yourself as as

victorious and that you are in control of your situation because you know what

Week of November 25, 2018 Spiritual Self-Mastery Class ~ Ego and Heart w/ Sloane Rhodes - Duration: 13:40.

hi subscribers hi everyone it is Sloane Rhodes here with your weekly spiritual

self mastery class ego and heart for the week of November 25th 2018 so I hope for

all of those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving I hope that you all had a

nice Thanksgiving weekend and that you are recovering didn't eat too much

um and so for this week what I want to do

well first of all for those of you who commented on the sound I I'm really

sorry that the sound was most difficult it was hard to hear so I think I fixed

it but um let me know if there are still some problems or issues with the sound

all right so as I do every week when these ego and hard spiritual salt master

classes I address and look at the energy for the week based on how the ego may

try to distract you with with those energies and based on how the heart can

explore those energies in a more loving and open way and I'm going to begin so

I'm going to get one card and I'll look for the energy the overarching energy

for the week and I'll look at how the ego may view it and how the heart may

look at it as well and then I'll be getting one additional card for what we

can expect to look forward to regardless so you might can't wandering around all

right let's get started spiritual self mastery class equals

heart for the week of November 25th 2018 is for all astrological signs and the

love readings are up for each sign if you are are interested in looking at

those you can watch them here on the YouTube channel and as well as hear them

on the audio podcast so you can listen to them as well as see them here and

there's links below

okay here we go so the energy for the week I'm using the terror of the spirit

Dec by Pamela enjoys Eakins okay so we got the death card in Reverse it's

interesting this card come up for me my personal reading today okay so when we

have the death card in Reverse and we're looking at it through the eyes of the

ego the ego will be very impatient the Eagles always judging that things are

not right right so so for this week as we have the death card in Reverse

there's gonna be something that is unfinished something that was coming

back around that either we have been delaying on or procrastinating on or

that we had thought we had put to bed and it comes back up come like when you

put your kids to bed when they're little and they pop back up just as you're

starting something adult anyway so here we go we have the death card in Reverse

so the ego may look at it like okay why is this coming back around

I can never catch a break it's always something just when I think I'm clear

back it comes again like you know in a godfather 3 which I don't recommend you

watch but there's a lion or Al Pacino says just I think I'm out they probably

vacuum right I love The Godfather movies but not that one anyway so with the

death card in Reverse that you might try to pull this kind of energy with you

like you know you can't catch a break it's always you're always in trouble

just when you think you're clear and you can't get clear why does this happen

then we go into the victimization right why is this artists happened to me I

thought I'd have paid that bill and now this is finance charge I'm never gonna

get ahead and so if you allow yourself to be led by the hand by the ego down

that road which is always very painful and full of feelings of victimization of

self judgement you begin to despoil in that same sort of Eddy you know you

can't get out of it you can't get out of it and it's very distressing when we get

into that space as we all know right the egos that is present for everybody but

when the death card comes in reverse it can be feel even bigger because it's a

Major Arcana card as well as you want something to

naturally end you know those are natural ending that's supposed to occur it's

supposed to happen that ego says why won't it end right and the ego is always

about supposed to it should have this kind of thing so it can be very

distressing so just be aware of that so somebody comes back around that you

thought was done and dusted and here it comes again take a breath and you say oh

how interesting I thought I was done with that I thought that I had completed

that cycle and yet here it is again offering me another opportunity says the

heart to address this from a more aware and loving perspective I thought I was

done with it but I have another opportunity here to open my heart more

to less self judgment to valuing myself and my contributions and the

contributions of others you know because we're always co-creating and it could be

an individual coming back in if it's not a situation and you can say wow here we

here we go again you know but we're doing the dance differently now because

I have more consciousness around it I have more open hearted and I'm looking

at myself differently and whenever we begin to hold a different vision for

ourselves we automatically begin to shift the vibration around the situation

or the interaction with the other an other person so it can't help but be

different rather than wishing somebody would go

away or the situation would go away you've got to change as you know your

own perspective about it and for these classes that you go in the heart the

heart says try to release the self judgment try to look at it as another

opportunity as opposed to God dang it here I go again I can't catch a break or

this person's always coming around I'm never gonna be clear bla bla bla you

down and you go right down that train and the heart says oh my gosh look at

that another opportunity to address this from a more open-hearted perspective

maybe look at the situation of the person in ways that are more

open-hearted you know or you look at the other person and go gosh

last time I I had this issue with them I was feeling really judgmental of them as

well they're so selfish they're so weird there's some needy whatever it might be

and now I can see that gosh you know I hold those energies within me as well I

know that I have been needing in my life I know that I have been weird in my life

and I can understand it more how this other person is holding that energy too

because the more that you create more open-hearted feelings towards self first

the less you tend to judge others because you're judging yourself less

harshly so then you can kind of look at other people in a softer light as well

and that begins to shift the energy around it and then things can have their

natural end because remember the death card is about a natural transition and

natural ending something that wants to to move on you know what it's in the

upright ascent it's a transition it's a card of transformation transition here

we are kind of like stuck so look at what the place is where you are kind of

holding on to older energy as well where you want it to blame someone or you're

really hanging on to that feeling of I'm a victim to this it's one of the easiest

ways for the the ego to hook us back into that older familiar pattern of

being the victim you know when when the egos when we're caught up in the ego

we're always in some fashion a victim in some way and that can be very addicting

because it does require whenever we are feeling victimized or the victim of

something whether it be just our bills are too much or this person's always

mean to me or whatever it may be we're seeing that in that familiar pattern of

fear and anxiety and that we can you know we can't ever shift our lives and

we can shift our lives right here and right now I say well hey look at that

here is that pattern coming vacuum again I'm really feeling victimized I'm really

feeling like circumstances are beyond my control how interesting I thought I had

done so much work around this and here it is again

and another opportunity to take your breath and to give myself more love less

self judgment and say look at you know it's a heart perspective look at how

hard you're working look at how much work and consciousness you've done

around this good job and it may not be comfortable to have to address it again

you thought we were done with it but now you can do it in a loving way

not always easy I'm not saying like it's super simple

it takes consciousness around it and it does take a moment you know because the

ego will will immediately pull us back into the old familiar pattern that's the

egos job it's feel safe there it feels more on guard

it feels yes this is how it's supposed to be no cuz the ego um

I guess as a function of the inner child or vice versa is trying to keep us safe

at its core you know are we safe are we loved you

know okay so let's get another card and so I hope that give you some perspective

on how the ego may try to distract you and how the heart says look look at

another opportunity here again it's not always comfortable that's an opportunity

to shift the larger ego of patterns through these these smaller ones that we

look at every week and the more that you draw consciousness around it and just

even ask the question of Wow okay so if I'm not a victim of this circumstance

how is this for me well perhaps it's what we already talked about like you're

getting another opportunity to look at it differently from more a more grounded

sense of self or more from a more loving standpoint with less self judgment and

less judgment of another or a circumstance and just when you begin to

ask those kinds of questions and play with a little bit you're no longer in

that place of ego and you're more in the space of curiosity in the heart subject

energies let me get one more card as you look at

what we can expect to look forward to regardless so the ego and the heart are

gonna be looking at this tenancy of the death card reversed which is something

that is meant to be transitional or to have ended already this coming back

round again to see that it's a layup procrastination you know again the ego

can come in and say why you procrastinating you're so lazy you never

get anything done that's kind of thing that can be another way that you go

comes in and then the heart says well you must be tired you know give yourself

a break it's coming back in again or you haven't finished it yet or this cycle is

still repeating because you're still integrating some of the earlier lessons

you know and just be a little kinder to yourself less always the heart such

energy and it's not just um what woowoo stuff it's actually beginning to shift

the vibe for pattern of how you live your life

okay so what's my expect regardless

seven of wind seven of swords many tons so some interesting energies here so

during the week we have the step partner murmur something that's not ending a

transition that's not occurring and the ego and the heart will have their own

opinions about this I've already talked about but what we can expect to look

forward to it regardless is a sudden of wind seven of swords and this cart in

this deck it's called many tons so be aware of gossip be aware that there is a

lot going on under the surface of other people's actions and maybe even your own

watch your tongue make sure that you're not adding to the gossip adding to this

energy which is ruled by the moon not everything is clear right you don't know

what's going on so don't talk about it you know if you

don't know if you don't have clarity then maybe just don't contribute to the

confusion and with the seven of wind I will say as well you know keep your

cards close to your chest this week something has come back around with more

consciousness around this death card in Reverse you can keep a watchful eye

rather than just racing ahead and disclosing everything because you don't

know everything that's occurring why is it not ending why is this death carnival

reversed why is this pattern repeating why have I not been able to close the

door on this particular relationship this thing whatever and the seven of

witnesses just keep it close to your chest right now no need to contribute to

the confusion keep your keep you know keep a watchful eye make sure that every

there is more clarity in your own head and make sure that everything that you

are wanting to hold near and dear you're keeping a watchful eye sometimes the

seven of when things can disappear people can get sticky fingers so we can

be aware of that as well

transformational wants to occur so we have all these snakes right the snakes

are a symbol of transformation we have the death card which is in the in the

Tarot is the car transformation so transformation is

occurring it wants to occur but it just may not be absolutely clear yet so don't

don't don't contribute to any confusion keep your tongue to yourself let's say

don't contribute to all of that okay so I hope you find that helpful I wish you

much love as always and I will see you next week and or your own private

appointment or over on the podcast I do Oh today is the final day for the Black

Friday we can say I have 35% off all of my online courses there's a link below

and the love readings are also up much love to you

Choosing a frame | Restoring Artemisia Gentileschi's 'Self Portrait' - Duration: 12:38.

I'm Letizia and I'm the Curator. I'm here in Conservation with Larry Keith,

our Head of Conservation and Peter Schade, Head of Framing.

Now as the picture is nearing the end of its conservation treatment, we're beginning to

think about how we might frame the picture and whether we need to acquire a

frame or perhaps make a frame for the painting.

We bought it without a frame as a picture, as you remember, that was not restored

and not framed so in a way we've got to sort of clean slate: we can start from

scratch and see what works and what doesn't work without any sort of

preconceptions.

So, it's a really interesting moment where Peter's

gathered together a variety of frames and this is a chance to really see what

works and get a sense about what works formally and so we often nowadays can

make very large scale photographic reproductions. These happen to be taken

before treatment started but they're really useful for giving an indication

about how the frame might work and we can test them, you know, much more happily

than using the painting itself which is here, nearing completion, so I think Peter

would like to say a little bit about the kind of frames we have and why they're here.

We try to match historically, kind of, appropriate frames

with paintings and have a selection of a variety of Italian frames

of the early 17th century which give us everything from carved to black and gold

to gilded to silver to wooden to brown painted so there's a variety that we can

all try out to see how tonally and how the shapes work with the painting.

It was interesting, of course, this painting is almost square and

it'll be very unlikely that we find in an old frame that would fit perfectly so

all these frames will also have to be considered with a view to adjusting the

frame or using the frame as a model for reproduction that's the options we

need to discuss.

And in looking at this big variety of frames we've kind

of narrowed it down to at least two things we're most interested in but it's

interesting to think about how frames which are correct historically and

appropriate sometimes just don't work with the painting and that's the thing I

find interesting is there's a combination of knowing about the style

and history of frames and then we still, like in conservation

itself, ultimately we're making nuanced aesthetic judgments which are up for

discussion. So, for example here, this frame you can see that the carved

elements, which are wonderful, have, in our view anyway, a slight unfortunate

tendency to repeat or compete with the spikes on the Catherine Wheel in a

way that seems a bit distracting and so we're inclined not to go with this frame

for that reason although it's perfectly appropriate.

It's got beautiful colour and beautiful weight

and it's got the original surface which is

something that we find with frames or we aim for. It's very good in all those

respects. Also it would be adaptable; that's something that I'm concerned

about that whether it's feasible to adapt an ornament and this would be

possible to adjust in size but actually that really doesn't work well

in this area.

- and it's interesting, there's no substitute really for

just trying a one-to-one reproduction with the frame itself because that's

something - it would be really hard to...I don't think we would have gathered that as

much from just looking at an image and so with just playing with the things

you gain all sorts of insight, I think, into what works formally, what seems

right even though they all may be, historically anyway, kind of correct.

With any frame around this painting we've talked about the fact that the way she's

composed it with quite a tight crop it is really interesting to see, even with

these photographic reproductions before conservation, you can start to see how

the figure has more weight and how it emerges from the plane in really a very

convincing a sort of way but I find it fascinating to think about what happens

with a darker value around the picture even though it's articulated with the

gold you get a sense, I think, of her kind of emerging even more powerfully from

around the frame yet without feeling too contained by it but the gold has a

beautiful kind of colour and patination that's really nice particularly with the

clean picture itself, you know, the less yellow...

- The cooler values of the cleaned picture work

particularly well with the gilded frame.

And so at this stage I mean it's not that we're necessarily absolutely

going to commit to one of these frames but it's so useful to see in the round

different families of frames and just get a sense about

kinds of formal qualities that enhance, you know, our view of the painting and

how it's working.

- This actually looks surprisingly insubstantial next

to frames that are fractionally wider but this just looks very, very

broken up. It makes the painting look less strong I guess.

- It's such a subjective thing as well, I really don't like this finish on this

picture. It doesn't work for me.

- Yeah, it's a different kind of

experience about how the relationship works between the figure and the frame.

It's not that one's right and one's wrong, they just have different qualities

and that's kind of the challenge and the fun of trying to work out what

might serve the painting best.

- Of course, you think about the sort of intrinsic importance of a frame, I think

about it curatorially. Is it the kind of frame this picture would have been hung

in and also I'm thinking is it something that proportionally might work here but

then weirdly doesn't work in the Gallery, in a very large picture gallery with

many other pictures of competing for space in a way so we have to kind of

bring all those elements into our decision-making. I agree with you with

the black: I think the black really helps to, sort of, extend the picture rather

than compress it but actually I find that the fact that this frame is quite

large works very well. It gives an importance to the figure, a presence.

- Yes, this has got, kind of, a reverse inner section that

that projects into the room. Actually the painting sits almost

exactly the same level as this black painted section whereas here the

frame actually pushes the picture physically outwards so it's more of a

reverse section which is, kind of, a typical 17th century device:

the paintings projecting forwards. I think, especially portraits, were framed

in a way that would project them outwards into a room rather than a frame

that makes you look into a space where you can see a world with either the

landscape or with a figurative scene, a portrait, I think, was always meant to be

projected into the room

- And that's certainly what she's trying to achieve

artistically with the way she's constructed the colours and the values

and the modeling of the arm and the rest that I keep talking about.

- And Peter: so with one or other of these choices,

obviously they need to be adapted

because they don't actually fit the picture or we're faced with the decision

of whether to use them as a model, perhaps to create something in the

framing workshop here. I mean, perhaps you could talk through the pros and cons,

particularly with the smaller one which is a harder thing to adapt.

- Yeah that would be really...I mean fortunately...and I think the

reproductions are not absolutely the right size but I think I know that

this size fits, I think in height or width, one dimension, it fits pretty

accurately so that makes it at all possible. I think if the frame had to be

adapted in two ways then one could rule it out but just

adapting it one way is difficult but possible.

- But I think it's worth saying that there are examples,

even now in the Gallery, where we think

a historical model is appropriate for a picture and some of them we can really

reproduce very very effectively.

This is one of those kinds of frames,

I think, because it's not a solid mass of 300 year old gilding that

basically...is that right? I mean it's more easy to make a more

effective reproduction? You're smiling at me!

- Well, reproductions are possible but they

always carry the baggage of modernity, of our time, and

always, in some way, it transfers into reproduction frames

and usually we don't see it now but you can look back at a history of frame

reproduction in the Gallery as well and most reproduction frames after 20-30

years, they don't match up to originals.

Yeah I think that's interesting

that 50 years from now you can always see and it's the same thing

about decisions we make about restoration itself, you know, we think we

try to be, I guess what we can say now is we're very transparent about the

decision-making process but it's definitely an interpretation all the way

down the line and so this is just another aspect of how we take a

view about things, about display, that is never written in stone.

- But I think by using actual old frames of the time,

even if we adapt them, there's a greater

likelihood that they will stand the test of time

- Yeah, I think that's certainly true.

- So looking at this one in particular what would be challenging in

adapting this frame?

- Yeah these Tuscan frames, they're quite common but

they're very very hard to use; I think we've got very few in the Gallery but

they are actually a reasonably common frame to find, partly because they're so

difficult to adapt and this one, in particular, having to be extended in one

dimension would be quite challenging to perform and

basically to do in a way that is invisible and invisible

not only now but also in the long term. Sometimes extensions only

become visible after five or six or ten years when the wood has slightly changed

in size and then cracks appear where an extension has

been made in the past and we select frames very much for the long

term: something that might be on the picture for forever, as far as we're concerned,

and therefore we really have to think about it, especially with

extensions, not to do something that will just look alright for now but will

become visible in in the future.

- It's twice as complicated with these

kinds of frames isn't it? Because, if you make them bigger, you have to keep the

ornament in the middle. You can't just add to one side.

- Yes, this would have to be extended in four places

- So technically that's double the challenge

and double the ethical issue I would say.

- And this can be reproduced

very effectively so, if you want to go for this type of frame, we might have to

consider a reproduction.

- Whereas the gold frame, that would be a matter of

cutting that down, adapting it to make it smaller and that would be more

straightforward?

- This would be fairly straightforward: we have enough

substance to alter this frame so that it would be completely invisible and all we

would see would be the original substance. Obviously we

wouldn't have to add anything to this and also there is no kind of ornament

that would make this frame only work at this size so this is

quite adaptable.

- Is it fair to say that this is the kind of frame that was even

designed and conceived to be any number of lengths?

- Yes, this kind of frame would have

probably been made at different sizes.

- So we're not doing anything that they

wouldn't have been thinking about in the workshop in the 17th century?

- Yeah it's more that our picture is just a really unusual size.

Service Above Self Award details - Duration: 1:03.

I'm Claire Herrington from Southport Elementary School and it is an honor and a privilege

to have been selected Brunswick County's Teacher of the Year.

I believe out of tragedy comes triumph.

Upon returning to school after Hurricane Florence I became aware of how important individuals

are to our school system.

Thousands of dollars were saved at Southport Elementary School by our head custodian Mr.

Gene Knoblauch, going the extra mile to dig trenches, sandbag and tape doors and return

the day after the storm to handle flooding and damages.

Through his actions I had a light bulb moment and realized we need to recognize all those

individuals who regularly put service above self to benefit our school system.

You can help these fine folks be recognized by filling out the nomination form on the

google form located in the link attached.

A handful of individuals will be selected and honored at the monthly School Board meetings.

Thank you for all you do to Spread the Magic and continue to make Brunswick County strong.
