Aspiring model Kitty, who is the eldest child of Diana's younger brother Charles Spencer, indulged her Instagram followers with a cute throwback picture of her starting school and people were quick to spot the similarities with three-year-old Charlotte.

And anyone would be forgiven for mistaking a young Kitty in the black-and-white image for Prince William's daughter who struck a similar pose in her first day of school photo.

After the 27-year-old treated her 458,000 followers to the photo with the caption 'First day of school tbt', they were buzzing with excitement,

commenting: "Is she Princess Charlotte?', "Wow…absolutely Charlotte Cambridge", and "Princess Charlotte has the Spencer genes".

In the past, Kitty's good looks have been likened to her aunt Princess Diana's, with the two sharing the same blonde, thick locks, blue eyes and chiselled cheekbones.

Kitty is the eldest child of the 9th Earl of Spencer and his first wife Victoria Lockwood, a former model, and was raised in Cape Town.

After her parents' divorce when she was aged seven, she split her time between staying with her father in the UK and her mother in South Africa, where she attended a private school.

Her modelling career began at the tender age of one when she appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar UK alongside her mum.

In 2015, the socialite made her professional modelling debut in Tatler magazine after signing with Storm Model Management.

Kitty is an ambassador for Centrepoint - a cause close to the heart of her first cousin Prince William who is the youth homeless charity's patron, a title previously held by Princess Di.

The royals' cousin's Instagram page is packed with snaps of her enjoying the good life around the world and posing for professional photoshoots.

 "First day of school," the socialite, 27, captioned the image.  Making the resemblance even more striking, Lady Kitty's childhood hairstyle appeared similar to Charlotte's look on her very first day of preschool earlier this year

 The pair also wore similar pairs of shoes on their feet.  Countless fans quickly commented on the photo, with many writing that they actually thought the photo was of Charlotte, 3, at first!  "Princess Charlotte looks like you," wrote one fan, while another added, "I also thought it was Charlotte!"  Although both Charlotte and her older brother Prince George went back to school this September, their parents didn't share any photos from their first days this time around

Prince William and Kate Middleton have always made a point of treating school as a private area, so that George, 5, and Charlotte can grow up in as pressure-free an atmosphere as possible

Likewise, the royal parents shared photos of Charlotte's very first day of preschool earlier this year, when she officially started at Willcocks Nursery School in January

 Charlotte and George were last seen with their younger brother Prince Louis, 7 months, in two new pictures released by the royal family earlier this month to honor the 70th birthday of Prince Charles on Nov

14.  In the new photos, Louis, who was born April 23, is held by his mom as George sits on his grandpa Charles' knee

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, appear to focus on something behind photographer Chris Jackson's camera

 Also featured in the photos, which were taken in September outside Clarence House: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Meghan (in Givenchy, her wedding dress designer) was pregnant at the time, but the news hadn't been made public
