>> Well, you want me to talk about

a bunch of things. I was like-

>> No. You begged me to be on the show and I said,

"No," and you said, "Please.

I'll do anything.".

>> What's the word you use to describe me?

>> You texted me a 2 a.m and you said, "I'm crying.

Please. There's nothing left in my life.

Put me on the show." And I felt that sorry for you.

>> Yeah, yeah.

>> This is getting more ridiculous by the second.

Hi I'm Burke Hollands.

>> I'm Asim Hussain.

>> This is a dum dum.

>> This is a dum dum.

>> This is five super secret special services

for building single-page sapplications. They get it?

>> I think you got it. I think you nailed it.

>> Nailed it. Thing number one; static storage.

What do we mean by static storage?

What kind of a service is that exactly?

>> So, a static storage solution like Azure book storage,

what it does is optimize

for returning a static asset, right?

>> So that's what it's really good at.

It's just returning that one thing

and a single-page application,

and it's really just a static asset.

>> Yeah. I mean, if you look at single-page application,

one is build in Angular or

View or React to or anything like that.

If you look in the end product,

this is the folder with

a bunch of files inside it and that's it.

>> Right. So, you don't really need

a whole elaborate web server

set up to serve a single-page application.

In fact, it might be faster.

It's probably faster.

>> It's a lot faster.

>> It's a lot faster to serve it from static storage,

something like Azure Blob Storage.

>> Exactly, right? All they're doing is just reading

a file from disk and then sending

it right back out. Easy.

>> Sounds simple to me.

>> It's cheaper.

>> Thing number two; you should really consider

using a CDN or a Content Delivery Network.

Now, this one is strange for me because I thought

CDNs were for serving up copies of jQuery.

Why do I need a CDN for my single-page application?

What do I get out of it if it's

already on static or blob storage?

>> Well, what a CDN does is it copies

of your resources on different nodes all over the world.

So, for instance, if your static storage solution

is in the US and

you have got CDN in front so there might be

CDN with copies you data in Japan,

in India, in Australia, all over the world.

Then when you've got a Japanese customer,

who's visiting your website,

they'll get served from a Japanese computer,

which is much closer to them, just much much faster.

>> So, this is all about speeds. It's all about speed.

>> Getting your files as close to

the customer as possible,

and cast and ready to go, so when they make the request,

it's just right there outside their front door.

>> That's it. Yeah.

>> Sounds right. Sounds amazing.

>> Yeah.

>> Thing number three; you should

seriously consider serverless functions.

Serverless is a buzzword.

I felt like we just say serverless and it's like magic.

Nobody knows what it does.

>> No.

>> They just know how to use it in the blog post.

>> That's exactly what it is.

>> Why should I use serverless functions

with my single-page application?

What's the benefit to me?

>> Well, normally, with a single-page application,

you'll need to have an API somewhere.

You need to have access.

>> Like in Express, your .NET,

some sort of data access layer.

>> You need to store some data on

a server and you get access to,

right? So nobody got an API.

Normally serve that on a server

somewhere and just have that hope it's somewhere.

But you can just use

serverless functions which allow you to just write

an API directly against

the database and some like Azure Function.

>> So you don't need a whole web framework run time real?

You just need to write the code

and all of that's already hosted in the serverless.

>> But the really really cool thing about

serverless functions and static storage,

I have to say as well,

is that they scale automatically for you.

So, you can get zero calls,

you won't scale up at all.

If you'd get 10,000 calls,

it will scale up for you automatically.

>> So, when my app goes to the front page of

Hacker News, no problem.

It just scales out.

Because anything that I

write is coming to the front page of

Hacker News like this episode in five minutes.

It's also super cheap, we should note.

It's like pennies. This is what you want.

When it's low load,

you want to pay nothing,

and when it's high load, you still want to pay nothing.

Not as much. So you're only

paying for the compute that you use.

>> Exactly.

>> And not wasting.

>> I would describe it as if you get

zero hits, you pay zero.

>> Which is exactly what we want.

>> But you're never going to get zero hits.

>> I don't want to get zero hits.

>> I don't get zero hits.

>> Even with serverless, it's going to paint a fortune.

>> You won't get zero hits.

>> No. Well, you might. You might.

>> I might.

>> Well, you don't know about Stephanie. You actually

look really good man. Normally, you look terrible.

>> I shaved today.

>> Did you?

>> I took a picture of it. I shaved.

I ended up short.

>> That's why your beard looks less

substantial. Are you serious?

>> I like-

>> It's not as pointy. You rounded it up.

>> No, I don't round it up. No, I shaved.

I was walking out the door and I was like.

>> Well, yeah you shaved into like round.

>> Yeah. I like cleared out the hair and stuff.

>> I like that.

You should use them at the eyebrows though.

That should connect to your hairline. So mean.

>> Thing number four;

you really need to have

some tool for your spot and handles,

workflow or automation type activities.

These are things that are not covered by

your API but still need to happen on the server.

Can you give me an example of what exactly that

means or what are some of the different services

that we can use to do that?

>> Well, what it means is back in the day,

before the SPA days,

before the SPA days, we would normally put like

a cron job on a server

and have something running on the server side.

We need something to do that right now with our SPAs.

What we've got on Azure is called Azure Logic Apps.

If you're using something else,

we use like IFTT or ZapQuery or something like that.

But essentially, functionality that runs

without a username to click a button or make an API.

>> So what's an example of someplace where I might

use a logic app in a single-page application?

What's a use case for that?

>> Well, you have a whole bunch of use cases.

Anytime you need to do any workflow

management of the application,

I might use a logic app,

which batches up all of

the e-bills I need to send and processes them every hour.

I might have another logic app which I need to listen to

Twitter to see if anybody has

tagged me and then perform some activity,

save something to your database,

we have a logic app for that.

These are the kind of things which

you wouldn't handle with

an API request. You don't have to use a trigger.

>> So instead of having like a sysadmin that

they're clicking a button every hour to do something,

I guess that's where the Logic Apps would come in

and you would just schedule those sorts of things up.

>> Exactly. That's perfect. Perfect example.

>> You don't have to write a lot of

code of these lot Logic Apps to do that.

Just drag blocks out and they connect together.

I like blocks. Blocks I can do, it's like Legos.

It's actually Lego, it's not Legos.

>> It's Legos.

>> Legos.

>> It's actually not Legos. No, they said Legos?

>> In the UK we say Legos.

>> That's just wrong.

>> You're saying wrong.

>> This interview's over. Thing number five;

you definitely need some sort

of continuous integration tool.

What exactly is a continuous integration tool

and why is it helpful for a single-page application?

>> Well, I think it's

helpful for a lot of different types of

applications but it's helpful for,

especially when you work with more than one person.

Like if you're working on yourself,

you might just bring a VS code

and deploy manually from that.

When you're working with multiple people,

with GitHub or something like that,

it's really useful to have something

where if you check in to master,

your emergency master, it also deploys your side view.

And also to have something like PR validation.

We all want it.

So when you create a PR on

my code then it will be your validation,

maybe you'll run npm install,

maybe an npm build,

an order or a task or something other,

just to make sure that your code is okay.

>> [inaudible] is always okay.

>> Yes. Always good.

>> So, for us, we have Azure DevOps and

we actually use this on the vscodecandothat.com site.

There's a blog post and

a show links below that you can check out.

It shows how we set this up,

but we pull in a Docker container,

we run npm install,

we run npm build, which fills the new projects.

Every time someone checks into master,

it's just like magic.

>> Magically.

>> It just happens.

>> We don't have to worry about it.

>> Yeah. It really is an amazing thing.

>> Jinx.

>> We owe me one soda. Actually, I

prefer a seltzer water.

>> A seltzer water?

>> Yeah. And not just any salt.

The La Croix? There La Croix in the UK?

>> I don't know what that is.

>> It's a delicious seltzer water but here

at Microsoft we have talking rain.

So it's called talking rain.

>> Talking rain, and again, it's salty water.

>> Seltzer water.

>> Seltzer water.

>> Nobody drink salty water.

>> I don't know.

>> It's salty water.

I would like a salty water.

>> I will get you a salty water.

>> Thank you. I'm Burke Holland.

>> I don't know what to say.

>> I'm Burke Holland.

>> And I'm Burke Holland.

>> I'm Burke Holland.

>> And I'm Asim Hussain.

>> Now you know five super secret special services

for building single-page sapplications.

>> Oh yeah.

>> Americans are drinking seltzer water.

>> What is seltzer water? What is that?

>> Seltzer water is just like a carbonated water

but with no flavor. There's no sugar.

>> It's sparkling water.

>> Sparkling water and an Italian soda.

Sometimes they call it Italian soda.

You know that it's Italian soda?

>> I bet it just because it's fancy.

>> Yeah. We think the Italians are

fancy. Are the Italians fancy?

>> No. It isn't fancy actually.

Dental Prosthetic Services: The Value of Investing in IT for Small Businesses - Duration: 3:59.

Dental Prosthetics is a family-owned business.

We were founded in 1972 by my parents and they retired in '94, and I bought it with

a partner, and we've grown from 3 people in 1972 to over 90 people now.

Well, my qualifications were I was the only person that worked there that had a computer.

So, when something broke they just said, "You come over here and fix this."

As far as our relationship with Circle began, we started inquiring to other businesses about,

"Well, who do you use?"

And then we kept hearing Circle Computer, we kept hearing that name, and I didn't know

much about 'em, but everybody had really good feedback about this company.

And they were willing to work with this little budding IT department that we had, and sort

of help support me because there was things that I couldn't do.

I was on the road to - I was in Illinois, and one of your employees calls me on the

phone and says, "Hey, your business is on fire."

And I'm like, "What?!"

And so, they were calling me and making suggestions, like, "John, we think you need to back up

all your data and confirm that it's all okay."

And I'm like, "Yeah, let's do that."

The fact that I wasn't physically there - it was like I was there because Circle -

you know, it's on the weekend, by the way.

These people are doing this from their home, you know.

They're calling me from their house and they're getting on their laptops and they're remoting

into our business and they're taking over and they're saving all of our data, which

we came to find out was the most crucial thing we could ever rely on in our recovery.

When Kris gave me that directive after the flood of '08 in Cedar Rapids, she said, "We

need a disaster recovery plan."

And I'm like, "We're not by the river.

What do we need a - you know.

Little did I know, we needed one."

And so, but the key was, I did get in contact with Circle, and they said, "We need to come

up with a better backup plan," and that's when that started, and I'm so glad we listened

to that 'cause that is what we needed.

We needed access to our data, and then having that remote strategy already in place to be

able to access it from a parking lot or somebody else's conference room or wherever we were,

if we didn't listen to that - it's like buying insurance.

Kris and I were talking about this - you know, you hate to pay for it, but boy, when you

need it, you are so glad you did.

First of all, are our employees all safe and do they know that they're gonna be well-cared

for?

And then second was, "Let's find another building really quick."

And before all of that, you know, the third thing would have been, "How do we reach out

to our customers?"

And like I said: before I ever got to that point in thinking, I already had an answer

that no, our data is safe.

All of our patient records are safe, all of our accounting is safe, all of our marketing,

everything that you would run a business with was already safe, protected, backed up, off-site.

I didn't have to worry about it.

I knew we could get to it when we needed it.

As a business owner, you always look at the P&L and say, "Are we spending our money in

the best way?" and you always look at the IT and say, "Is something that we need?"

and absolutely you need it.

There is not enough insurance money in the world to recover the data that we could have lost.

There's just absolutely not enough.

Make sure that you have a partner in your IT supplier and make sure that you are doing

the things you need to do to protect your data.

It's just one of those things that it's invaluable.

The University of Memphis Career Services (Paige) - Our Students are "Something to Roar About" - Duration: 2:39.

So the first time I came to Career Services it was more like advising appointment for

me.

I had all of these things that I wanted to do and you look at my transcript and just

see all these different classes, but I was not exactly sure where I wanted to go with

it, so I met with Sandy and she was like these are all the things that you can do, and she

knew that I was interested in psychology and politics and she was like how can we combine

this, how can we make your resume and your G.P.A. look as good as possible so that you

are competitive in this process, so that was really reassuring.

Over the last year some of the services I used were mock interviews, which came really

in handy for me especially because I had never done a professional interview before and they

were like you know we can record it and so you can see yourself doing it, and I was like

absolutely not, you are not going to record it, but it was still helpful, like, she was

like these are some of the questions that you will be asked.

You know people have a hard time like answering questions, tell me about yourself, or talk

about a challenge that you faced, so being able to talk through those before I actually

did the interview was extremely helpful.

So I think one of the most important things to remember when you are trying to achieve

academic goals is that usually you are not going to do it well the first time.

For me, my first year was a disaster, like I lost a scholarship and transferred to Memphis,

so bringing up my G.P.A. and just trying not to be so hard on myself, but figuring out

who I was and learning from that failure was so important.

And I have had a lot of experiences like that, like if I could say anything about academic

success, it is that it is made up of multiple failures before you get there, so just to

keep trying, keep looking for opportunities and utilizing services like Career Services

is so important and so to be able to come up to his office and have the room to make

mistakes but also be able to build up your confidence at the same time is amazing because

it carries you so far.

So it was really a place I was able to come and just relax a little bit.

So the fellowship I will be working in is with the Charles Koch Institute and getting

into that job process was kind of difficult because it is in Washington D.C., and so I

was doing everything from here and so I think getting that fellowship would not have happened

if it were not for being up here and practicing.

I would absolutely recommend it for that reason and these are services that you are paying

for with your tuition anyway so you should definitely take advantage of them.}

Harinder Takhar, PayTM, CEO: Migrating to Digital Services - Duration: 2:06.

Now PayTM is India-based and you manage to get a slice of the huge FinTech pie

that is in India. Tell us how you managed to do that.

We started PayTM in 2009. We named it as PayThrough Mobile. I think one of the things

that worked in our favor was that we took a bet- a couple of bets, actually. The

first one was that the country would move to a mobile interface. And the other

bet that we took was digital payments would happen ubiquitously. So over the

last few years we spent a lot of money and investment into this particular area.

Keeping the consumer happy with the interface is extremely important to us

and I think those are the top reasons why I think we've done what we've done.

And what's a regulation like in India versus here in the U.S., for example, when

it comes to FinTech?

The edge in India, I would say, over the U.S. is that the

regulation is pretty centralized. In India, for instance, to do a wallet or a

banking license there is one license that you need to work with, as opposed to

the U.S. where, you know, 50 states and roughly 50 licenses that you have to

worry about. The other thing is that I think India is way ahead- open banking is

a conversation that happens sometimes in London and also in North America. In

India it's a reality. There are several apps that you can use to bank with

whichever you want.

And what are your thoughts with regards to APIs and the

industry trend towards more open APIs?

So open APIs is are actually extremely

useful for the end-user. I think it opens up a lot more competitive options

for the end consumers. And so at the end of the day it is actually a

beautiful thing. So I think opening up APIs, allowing the consumer a much

better choice than what they ever had before is absolutely a wonderful thing

for the whole economy as well.

Hariner, thank you very much.

Thank you.

Programs and Services Accessed by NYS Managers and CSEA Leaders - Duration: 4:05.

- It's a win-win-win. It's a win for the state,

it's a win for labor and it's a win for management.

- A real win-win not only for the employee,

but for the employer as well.

- The program itself is a win-win situation for both sides.

- [Narrator] Throughout the years, the New York State

and CSEA Partnership for Education and Training

has been creating win-wins for both state agencies

and CSEA-represented employees across the state.

This unique partnership continues to promote increased

career mobility, workplace health and safety, and job

satisfaction while building strong labor-management

relationships between New York State managers

and CSEA leaders.

Its ongoing commitment to providing a positive

work-life experience for CSEA-represented employees

has produced a highly motivated and skilled

workforce, dedicated to excellence in public service.

Here are just a few examples of what can be accomplished

when labor and management work together to achieve

its common goals.

- We reached out to the Partnership for

Labor-Management Committee Training because we

were starting a new committee here and then it

also gives people avenues to express any concerns

that they have or any ideas for improving the workplace.

- We hit the ground running, but since we've had

the training we were able to make some real positive impacts

on work life inside of our office.

Things that normally wouldn't come up for me,

that I wouldn't be aware of I was able to find

out by interacting with labor directly and the training

has basically given us the groundwork for the way

that we interact with each other which it was good before,

but now it's even better.

- I've been a supporter of the

Applied Skills Trades Program for at least 12 years.

It's been a great value on two different campuses.

Our employees are our biggest investment and having

that investment to move forward with is key.

We can promote from within.

We have employees now who already know the campus,

who are ready to go to work in whatever trade they

have selected when that opportunity arises.

So it helps us grow our own in a rather minimal labor pool.

- It's a game changer for us, as far as new employees that

come in and a good recruitment tool.

When they come in at the ground level,

they want to have some type of career at the job

and not many other facilities or even companies offer

this type of training.

The new employee, like I said, gains a career.

But for the seasoned employee,

now it's an extra trade under their belt.

Also as far as when you have a project on hand, now you

have an employee that's multi-skilled.

You can use that employee's skill set to get that job done.

- One of the great things about the Partnership is

the fact that it provides an alternative

funding method for agencies.

It's really essential that employees that deal

with high-voltage electrical energies that they are properly

trained and that their equipment is tested.

Due to budget constraints, our agency may not have

the funding available to bring in an outside trainer

for much needed safety and health training so with the

Partnership grants that money is there, it's available now.

And it's something that all CSEA locals should be

taking advantage of because it's a tremendous program.

- Partnership and a Quality of Life Grants Program is a great

program to have with the parks because we have a lot

of employees that utilize the grants for recognition,

as well as break room improvements for appliances,

microwaves, ice makers for refrigerators.

We don't have a lot of time on lunch, we have a half hour

it's tough to get to a store.

There's not a lot of stores close.

The Quality of Life Grant Program worked out great, because

we were able to apply for that back in May

to get an ice maker.

We got the ice maker and it's been utilized ever since.

I emphasize this program all the time,

I talk about it all the time.

Every time I'm eligible to get a grant, I apply for one.

It's a very easy process.

- It's a great feeling knowing that I have the Partnership

backing me to help me succeed in life.

- They are always there for you to help you out

and meet you anywhere you wanna be.

- They want you to know that they're proud

of what you also accomplished.

- [Narrator] Since its establishment in 2001,

The New York State and CSEA Partnership

for Education and Training

has been fully committed to its mission

of providing a positive work life experience

to all CSEA-represented New York State employees.

The Partnership's wide range of programs and services

gives CSEA-represented employees like you

the opportunity to increase your career mobility,

work place health and safety, and job satisfaction,

while preparing for future workforce needs.

It also provides the support, encouragement,

and tools needed to professionally succeed

and further your career.

Here are just a few examples of how the Partnership

is positively impacting

CSEA-represented employees across the state.

The online learning classes are very convenient

for somebody like myself who is very,

very busy at her job.

I'm always on the go with the phones and the mail

and the paperwork.

I'm able to do these classes around my schedule.

The Partnership online program has helped me in my career

because it's helped me to have better

customer service skills.

I've learned to take a step back

and actually try to hear what they're saying

versus just stepping and jumping right in

and giving my perspective.

I feel very supported by the Partnership,

even after taking the courses.

I still get emails from the Partnership

with different courses they offer,

and different techniques,

even after the class I've taken,

and they always are asking if there's any classes

that we might want offered or help with anything.

- The reason I have taken the Skills for Success programs

is to help me further my career.

I would like to go from my current title to supervision.

Work is being driven with computers now,

and I felt a need for me to catch up

and bring myself up to current standards.

So through the Partnership, I've been able to take classes

in computer skills, effective writing skills,

punctuation and grammar.

It's going to help me down the road

to achieve my goals of becoming a supervisor,

but it also helps me on a personal level.

I still have young children at home

that are using computers

and it's helping me keep up to speed with them.

- The Partnership's Tuition Benefit Program

was very helpful to me when I decided to get my LPN.

I could call the advisors and they would be very helpful

in leading me in the right direction

to help with the tuition benefit.

Also, they could help with my testing.

Mostly finances, which was definitely an ease on my mind

because it was an expensive program.

And even afterwards, she's contacted me to make sure

I enjoyed the program,

if everything worked out well for me with my schooling

and my job and things.

With the basic trainings that we have,

I took advantage of many programs.

One of those was a speakers for non-English

and the pronunciation helped me in the test,

which I passed with a high score,

I was able to get a promotion to grade 11.

It makes me very happy.

After a year, I became permanent

and I was able to take advantage of another promotion

to the University of Albany.

In the beginning, when I thought I gonna take these classes

I was, I'm going back to school,

but it's not like you're going back to school,

its enrich all you have.

Human Service Administration, and Equine Industry.

So you're able to really customize your experience

and choose what path you want to go to

as an undergraduate in the major.

All of our faculty actually work in the fields

or have retired from the field.

So they really highlight that in terms

of bringing their experiences into the classroom

and really bridging that gap between theory and practice.

So they're bringing all of their perspectives

into the classroom and students are definitely able

to connect with at least one faculty member

that is doing what they want to do in the future.

Making it personal really means making it personal.

In that sense that really appreciating each student,

their differences, their interests,

and making that experience really extraordinary

for them, I would say.

That's really something important to me,

but also holding the academic excellence

of providing that foundation for them

to go into their future career or to a graduate program.

MVC Disability Support Services - Duration: 3:14.

DSS is a program that provides academic adjustments to students who have

documented disabilities so that they can have the full college experience.

We ensure equal access to education regardless of what your disability is.

Our job is to make ourselves out of a job by

making them as independent as possible

so they can be successful not only in the classroom, but outside the class.

Disability Support Services is committed to providing equal access

to educational opportunities to students with disabilities.

DSS motivates students and encourages academic achievement,

independence and self-advocacy.

To qualify to be a part of the DSS program, you must obtain a

documented disability such as:

acquired brain injury, developmental disabilities,

learning disabilities, psychological disabilities,

temporary disabilities, health impairments,

hearing impairments, mobility or visual impairments,

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,

autism, as well as other disabilities.

DSS has served individuals with disabilities for forty-five years

and will continue to serve these students

to provide equal access to education

by reducing barriers.

In the DSS office, there is academic advising

and disability-related counseling specially made for you.

To students who qualify, DSS provides

accommodations in the high-tech center such as additional test time and

advanced adaptive technology.

DSS offers a special support group for students

with autism and social anxiety.

SAILS teaches academic and independent living skills

by connecting students to on-campus resources.

DSS also accommodates to your needs in the classroom.

Students who obtain special accommodations

should fill out a "Request for Academic Adjustment" form

and submit it to the DSS office.

This may include:

sign language interpreters for the classroom

and campus appointments,

real-time captioning for class lectures,

note-taking or scribe assistance,

and even adaptive equipment loans

and training on how to properly use these technologies.

We provide academic adjustments that address

a student's individual disability and make sure that

they have equal access to all the educational opportunities

that are available.

There's not just one avenue of potentially

giving a student the opportunity to learn in one way.

There are so many high school students with documented disabilities

that never even dream of attending college

so we just want them to know that

our department is here to support them.

DSS takes pride in the acceptance of diversity

and they are here to help you.
