16 year old will graduate high school and Harvard University in spring NY Daily News
A 16 year old student from Kansas is set to graduate both high school and Harvard University in the spring.
Braxton Moral, who is a senior Ulysses High School, will earn both his high school diploma and bachelors degree from the Ivy League university within a two week span in May, reported.
Despite being the first and only student to simultaneously pursue a high school diploma and bachelors degree from Harvard University, Moral does not consider himself that different from other high school students.
Im not any different; I just do a little thing on the side, Moral told NPR. I try to play it down at high school because if I talk about it, it becomes a divide.
Moral, who is the youngest of four children, plays on on his schools tennis team and participated in debate, forensics and the Scholars Bowl at Ulysses High.
Moral pursued his bachelors degree through — which primarily serves adults who work full time and are not able to attend college classes full time on campus. It allows students to complete degrees on their own time.
Come spring, Moral will hold not only a high school diploma, but also a bachelors in government with a minor in English, Harry Pierre, associate director of communications for the Division of Continuing Education at Harvard University told Hutchinson News.
Braxton Morals mother, Julie Moral, told although he could calculate math and had a wide vocabulary from a young age, she did not realize her son was gifted.
Beginning in second grade, he began taking classes with those two years older than him. After taking a test at a community college, his family began to realize his level of intelligence. Moral skipped fourth grade, and started taking some high school classes in Middle school, as reported by Hutchinson News.
The Duke University Talent Identification Program suggested the Morals contact Harvard. After he earned a B plus in a class while attending a Boy Scout summer camp, he was given another class, and admitted to the university.
The Morals worked with Harvard to set a four year plan for him to graduate, and his high school was supportive of a plan for him to simultaneously earn both degrees.
Moral was able to work on classes during his fall and summer online, and would either use time he was allowed during the high school day or work at home at night, Hutchinson News reported. Some of his college classes would substitute for his high school classes, which helped Moral from taking similar classes both in high school and college.
During the summer going into his junior and senior year, Moral would attend classes on campus at Harvard. Moral found his in person classes easier than the online classes.
Despite his intelligence, Moral faced challenges.
Harvard provided Moral with some scholarships, but because he did not hold a high school diploma, he was not eligible for federal aid. His family took private loans to fund his education.
Roger Hilton, retired educator and administrator from Ulysses, told Hutchinson News a grade from Harvard once moved Moral off his high schools honor roll.
Although it was not always easy, Moral told Hutchinson News he never thought of stopping his college studies, and currently holds a B plus average at the university.
In May, Moral will finally earn his high school diploma and his Bachelors degree from Harvard around two weeks later.
Moral hopes to attend Harvard Law School after graduation. Although his score on the Law School Admission Test came close, it was not high enough to be admitted to Harvard Law School. Moral plans to take the exam again, and hopes to achieve his dream.
He plans on becoming a politician after completing his studies at law school.
