Auto news on Youtube Dec 29 2018

so the first question on the board panel is can SCC compost single used

compostable plastics that be you right now we are not composting single-use

compostable plastics the PLA s or the NGO or that we do get very hot

temperatures and we do see some of those products degrade but they're not

recommended for the backyard scale which is you know we're a large backyard scale

basically so no we do not please don't bring them to our compost sites at this

time those are meant for industrial facilities Thank You Tracy so the nice

question is for dr. Mayne I believe we hear that some farm raised fish are

really bad for you for example salmon they say you should only wild can you

comment on this well I personally disagree with that opinion farm raised

seafood is some of the best seafood that is available on the planet

the advantage of farm raised seafood is that you know where it's been

it's been fed good quality feed throughout its life and then it is

harvested and brought to market and one of the challenges that you have with

wild-caught seafood and I'm not saying we shouldn't have wild we need to have

both but one of the challenges you have with wild-caught is that you don't know

where it has been so it could have moved into an area and there could be some

challenges with it now a lot of the misconception about

farm raised seafood is based on on really old information because our

science and our farming practices have greatly improved as we have learned more

about how to raise animals in captivity and so we know a whole lot about

land-based agriculture but most of our large-scale production knowledge for say

fish production has happened in the last 20 years so in the last 20 years we've

really learned a lot and improved the practices so

the analysis is that the quality is the same or potentially better with

farm-raised probably the next question is probably for you how can you that

ways to recycle encompassone I feel a little better now that I'm sitting you

know you go to the you go to the grocery store and you get a dozen oysters or you

get some clams think about where that's gonna go on the old days I lived up in

the Carolinas and the Florida coast we put them out in the creek right by our

house we used it for the roadbed this program is going to be scaled up what we

anticipate is having stations throughout the county different municipalities

where you can come and deposit your shells the restaurants and we'll be

distributing a press release on the next 10 restaurants that'll be coming out

it'll be a route and then phase 2 will be the next 10 or 20 or 30 restaurants

but at this juncture there probably isn't any place to deposit right this

minute yes yes ma'am

correct in days the calm we're gonna be sending out a press release that we've

got sixty five thousand pounds of shell that needs to be bagged so that would be

a great opportunity to come and by then we'll have next steps as we continue to

scale up the project down on the riverfront and manatee the next question

is for Mac and Mindy so how can I start a community garden in a green space in

my city of Sarasota neighborhood so in the city of Sarasota right now there's

orange I would first I would if you have interest in community or school garden

it's beneficial to touch base because I might be able to point you to an

existing garden that's already in your neighborhood that is ready to go and has

a plot available so there's Bayou Oaks and orange blossoms that are both within

the city of Sarasota if you want to start a new one definitely touch base

with me and on our website the extension Sarasota County Extension website

there's a community garden page and it actually lists the steps that people

would usually go through to start a garden community gardens it is really

important that you have a community so gauging some interests from your fellow

community members because it does require a lot of physical work and so

you don't want to be out there yourself and then you need other people that are

planning on gardening with you as well so but the steps are there but and our

contact information as well one more question is a whole bike so for

SCC what would be the one policy that you liked is to see change locally that

would help support and grow I think it's gonna say community gardens is it

composting scroll down composting sorry Tracy what would what policy to change

community composting this is what our composting unit you would like to see

change locally to help support and grow community composting well I feel like

locally there is a lot of support for community composting it's just getting

the word out and expanding the existing programs for composting in general we

just need to have some shifts so that material can move around like say for

instance from restaurant two places that can process large

volumes and that kind of thing so that next question is are any compost sites

in Manatee County for community composting there are only school

programs in Manatee County but we would love to see more community composting in

Manatee County okay a golden question necks love the composting is dog poop

compostable mm-hmm we do not put dog poop in any of our

composting bins no we do not okay yep next questions for Robert for oyster guy

Robert no oyster guy put it on your business card so there have been seaweed

blooms in the Caribbean potentially this will increase in the tropics of tropics

do you have any creative ideas as how to make use of that seaweed well it's a

great question we are looking at some seaweed dishes so I think it would be a

matter of testing see if they're edible is dr. Maine said purslane is a dish

that is in that sort of family forgive me if I'm wrong but it's a succulent

it's got the salt in it it's got the moisture content so we utilize that

product and sautes and different dishes and sauces but I could not speak to

exactly what we would use it without knowing exactly the type of species it

was okay if you scroll up a bit it's a question in the middle of that blue part

I missed there we go oh here we go so how do you prepare purslane is it

bitter tart question mark do you cook it or eat it raw purslane all of the above

so and I am putting out a cookbook so keep an eye out for that I probably

won't be out before Christmas because I can see it's December is gonna be here

what in two days so so but that you can dry it you can eat it fresh on salads

it's not something that you would necessarily eat uncooked just all by

itself it has a I wouldn't say it has a it has a really

unique flavor to it and so it can be pickled it can be done in soups juices

all kinds of things so keep an eye out we're gonna have that cookbook and so

we'll get it up on the mote website thank you so much the panelists give a

round of applause excellent job

I really feel like this panel especially like a lot of the panelists have really

given me especially I mean hope I left you all feel the same way you see a lot

of the news reports I'm reading the drawdown book right now I'm like oh but

I really feel like very hopeful after the presentation today so let's give a

big round of applause for all of our speakers today thank you everybody who

came up here it's not easy coming up here doing this this gig

my question is for my family and all.

All religious books refers that good is one and only.

when I said to you assalamualaikum then you can reply me om peace/ horioum.

assalamualaikum means peace for you and om means peace for you. same meaning and same purpose. why you couldn't said horioum or om peace

brother you ask that .

we said assalamualaikum means peace for you and om means peace for you. there is no problem with 'peace' problem in 'om'.

Whats the problem sir?

this 'om' Hindu's are use it for god. no problem with peace.

NO problem in peace

If translate assalamualaikum- peace for you then no problem.

No problem with peace, salam but problem 'om'.

we have to understand that we said that we said peace for you.

For this purpose we request to Allah(god).

'but there are different idea in people about meaning of 'om'.

If you said peace for you no problem but when you said 'om' people imagine this is hindu's term

they imagine this about divinity or someone's statue/shape/figure.

this imagination is so problematic.

clearly sentence is better then other way

So no problem in peace

We said in arabic assalamualaikum, that means peace for you.

when you add 'om' that means someone Give you without Allah(god) that is problematic.

I hope that peace upon you brother

Yes sir, Thank you

Stay with peace brother, Goodbye

Sustainable Communities Workshop-Climate Change and Renewable Energy-Question and Answer - Duration: 11:56.

I'll ask the first question Tim you're affiliated with David Huell correct and

spatial how does your how does what you do affiliate with David who lands once

and spaceship earth I'm the co-founder of the organization and a co-author of

the book David was a guest lecturer as a guest

lecturer and the future of residents and we've taught several classes together

and so that's how we got together and decided we needed to write the book okay

great great so some other questions we have is a battery coop came to Sarasota

and will businesses be eligible question

currently battery coop we are piloting a solar and battery co-op in the state of

Maryland because there are other state incentives there and we're looking to

expand that outside of other states we're gonna wait and see how that data

worked see the turnout in the success of that the issue currently with a lot of

that battery co-op is supply and demand so the demand is much bigger than the

supply at this point but a lot of the batteries are catching out so we're

gonna wait and see on that and we would love to bring a battery coop to Sarasota

there is a time line of capacity businesses most of our co-ops are open

to nonprofits and small businesses and then it's really up to the Installer if

that qualifies in their policy and their rate structures with the coop format and

we always give preference to homeowners in case it's a larger business or a

large number of businesses in the coop intimidate the next question was for you

it says was the 129 degree temperature measured but that was in your

presentation well this was in Pakistan and Iran during a heatwave this past

summer and then

then along the Gulf Coast in their area was where you had to heat index 249

degrees yeah OS other question in terms of the

solar power what lot of people have I think have the

overwhelming sense of there's that old school math that a lot of people do and

they price out solar for their home how does how do you can you help somebody

overcome that math and they look at the recovery that return on investment

analysis how do you all make a difference in that well we try we don't

the solar co-op because it's a group purchase it's a bulk purchase we bring a

lot of value to an installer so that sales and acquisition portion is reduced

and we're bringing an informed body group to an installer so we're generally

seeing extremely competitive pricing through the solar co-op but we also

stress the support the technology and the quality equipment so the costing

we're really helping them figure out the general costing obviously depending on

their size but how net metering works that basic formula and then they can

work with the Installer to price out how much they want to offset and their rate

of return excellent question for Christine

Christine when it comes to the book drawdown I'm a I'm this is for me not

from there when it comes to the book drawdown what do you see what could

advice could you give a local government to say what well based on that both of

the different things that that book looked at what kind of local government

do what would you recommend that they look at first so there's a list in the

back of the book of the top solutions they listen by the most efficient to the

least efficient so that would be a good place to start and I know a lot of the

governments here already are aware of this and so they're they're using the

channels that they have locally to start with some of those solutions but you

know it's it's a group effort and and so you know looking at what makes sense for

the governments and looking at what we can do kind of as a community doing our

part what they can do for their part as well right oh please go ahead

so I should know the number I think it's about a dozen and most of them are

members of the science and environment Council and that's how they found out

about it if you're interested come see me we are definitely looking to

expand at some point again the the group is really new so a lot of these

conversations still have to be had with the larger group but definitely come

talk to us and one question for Sean as well Sean I'm involved actually in the

faith-based community and what would advice would you give somebody like if

there's a youth pastor supplying that and they have students that are want to

get involved in environmental issues and make a difference but also still there

they're loyal to their faith obviously so what advice would you give somebody

or what avenues are local that students can be involved in that are faith-based

yeah I think there's there's a lot of resources at the national level for

faith-based curriculums I mean I think ultimately any kind of social change

starts with education and the idea of education for action so tapping into

some of those resources I think for the consciousness-raising portion of it

would be a great place to start I think in terms of specific actions you know in

Sarasota there's there's the work of the climate justice coalition and ready for

100 and we're interested in expanding the footprint of that but I think to

Christine's point I mean there's a lot of ways to to get people to take that

that first step of action and so there may be some kind of project that could

be done around the church there may be something that could be done in a school

whether it's you know a sample wetland or a solar installation I mean it can it

can really vary in scale and I think the other important thing to it is is

connecting it with some global sense of what the scope of the challenges are

what people in other other areas are facing that may have less material

privilege what are some of those challenges and trying to link it with a

justice and equity perspective it's great it's great advice well let's give

it up for oh I'm sorry one more question ma'am go ahead

oh they're not well it'll be a runaround you had a question let me I'll be a guy

running around the mic here so given that our upcoming administration our

Florida administration senatorial and gubernatorial are both climate change

deniers what is the best way to kind of force them to start you know

administering like us sustainable policy when obviously there's a need and a huge

concern about this probably everybody has some thoughts on and I can just

share mine real quick I think we have to look at the ballot initiatives you know

we just passed amendment four in the state of Florida to restore voting

rights to people with felony convictions in there and on their backgrounds and

that passed with over 60% of the boats we passed the land conservation bout

initiative though that's been that's had its own problems but I'm not sure you

know what the path forward through the legislature is at that point the other

option which I mentioned in my talk is to actually hold the corporations

accountable themselves and I think there's a lot that can be done there

there's successful case studies you know in other areas on other issues for how

that can work but by no means is any of this going to be easy or particularly

quick you know it's gonna be it's gonna require a lot of tenacity I think and

persistence regarding solar I'm wondering what efforts are being done to

convert over larger organizations like condo associations to have rooftops but

it's a it's a whole association that would have to convert over

and one of processes that they're using in Orlando they have the advantage that

the Orlando runs its own electricity system is they're taking some of their

larger water bodies and they are rafting solar panels on those and then

specifically selling the equivalent kilowatt usage from those panels to the

residents of condominiums and taller towers where you know you can't get

enough solar panels right now on the roof to match all the demand of that

building but you can use other sites and they're doing similar things with you

know landfill landfill covers being done with solar power so that you know it's

just looking about there's other you know opportunities so there weren't a

group so you're not leaving out a group just because the physical structures

have been designed in such a way that it's inconvenient for them so yeah yeah

it really varies on condos and homeowners and group structures like

that if if you own your own roof and you own your own meter there's a lot more

options there but a lot of these group constructions it has to do with

community solar which is technically really not allowed in the state of

Florida so only a utility can technically sell power so that is a

bigger issue on how we can virtual net meter and use advanced community solar

to help more people would be a legislative move I wanted to share with

especially Sean did you know that a carbon pricing bill was introduced in

the US House on Tuesday it's called the energy innovation and carbon dividends

bill and it was a bipartisan introduction by three florida

legislators francis rooney ted deutsch and charlie Crist Democrat from Maryland

and a Republican from Pennsylvania so for what you can do you can call your

representatives and ask them to support this in this proposal this this is

huge the bill number is 71 73 I'm glad you brought that up and citizens climate

Lobby is the organization locally that people can plug into to support that

carbon pricing initiative we have one last question here ma'am give a question

give a question question doing a ballot initiative and in in Sarasota County it

also passed that we have to do 10% of the populists instead of 5% that's how

we got the other ones on the ballot so how how is that statewide er what's the

solution to that I'm not exactly sure what the statewide threshold it is Julia

might have more knowledge it requires a lot of you know I mean 10% is huge cuz

it and they and they only give you 18 months to get that 10% it's not like

it's unlimited like before it was five yeah I mean I think there's a larger

conversation there about how a lot of the mechanisms of democracy right now

are being restricted and at the very moment that we're facing our greatest

existential threat our political system is the least equipped to deal with it

and that's why ultimately I only see movements being what can take us through

that that that constriction I think it just means it's a tougher solution to

achieve but what are the alternatives well given we have to stay on schedule I

want to thank the panelists give a round of applause I apologize the questions

we're working if you actually want to grab them before they leave and get your

question answered she'll be happy to talk to you
