How to Answer: What Are Your Salary Expectations? - Duration: 1:39.

One of the questions that's going to come

up in any interview is salary.

For some reason people tend to avoid answering the question or provide a really soft answer.

Here's what I found.

Before you go into an interview know what the market rate is for that position.

And you know we all have different skills, we're all looking at slightly different

positions.

And we would expect that the salary is going to be different depending on our search.

It's hard to say, I'm looking for a hundred thousand dollars if we're applying to positions

that are only worth eighty thousand dollars.

Or you know I'm looking for two hundred if they're only worth one twenty-five.

So know what the position is worth on the market.

And know that going into the interview.

So when they ask about salary I typically answer it and say, I would expect based on

my research the market for this position is from X to Y, and I'm looking in that range.

I would expect a base of A or B and be really clear with it.

And be clear with what you've done and the homework that you've done to validate it.

And put the onus back on them and say, hey, is that correct, is that what you're paying,

or what is the position?

A great company will know and answer that question right off the bat, a company that

doesn't really have their act together might give you well, we don't know, we're

trying to figure it out, in which case, you're probably not in the right stage or process

or it's going to be a more cumbersome process than you anticipate.

So be clear, outline the range of position, and put the onus back on the company or the

interview to give you the information that you're looking for as well in terms how

compensation is structured as a whole for that position.
