Education 631 Mod 5 Casey - Duration: 6:59.

This is Matt Casey for Education 631 and for the week 5 Distance Education Lesson I am

going over some of the features within Microsoft Word, specifically I am going to be going

over some of the review features within Microsoft Word.

Now, before I get started let me point out that the appearance of Microsoft Word may

vary depending on the edition you have.

The version I will be using is a Microsoft Word 2016 edition that I have installed on

a MacBook Pro.

Although the appearance may be different than other years, versions, or whether you're using

a PC or a Mac, all the features that I will be going over are available on all version

of Microsoft Word whether you are using a PC or a Mac.

So, it may appear a little bit different but the features are inherent in all the versions.

OK, so now I am going to switch over to a Microsoft Word document.

This is actually a document that I submitted for a previous course at LU.

This is from a previous course like I said, this is the same document just two different

versions of it.

To go over the review features, I have set them side by side and if you click on the

double arrows you can go to your review pane.

I have it open in both documents.

One of the benefits of using the review features of Microsoft Word is that you can have multiple

reviewers look at your document, make changes, save it, and you can view all the changes

or comments that they may have saved side by side.

So, say you have two people look at your work and give you feedback, make edits to your

paper and give you feedback.

You can open them both up, save them as different document names.

This one I have saved just slightly different names so I know that they are different files,

the same document but different files, and I have them side by side.

Now, before I get started let me show you this feature right here.

So this is the tracking button and anyone that is reviewing your work, or if you are

reviewing someone else's work, make sure that you turn track changes on.

Click this button here and it will turn track changes on.

Keep it on all mark up, that will make sure that any changes that you make to the document

will show up and be tracked when the owner of the document opens it.

For example, say you had spelled a word wrong and they changed it for you, see that feature

shows that they had deleted what you had there and also what they had inserted there and

it will show up on the right side.

Now as I scroll down I have inserted a few examples of some of the review features.

So right here is an example of a comment.

What you can do is highlight a word like I did here.

I highlighted instruction and I embedded a comment "what instructional strategies are

you referring to?"

There are two ways to do this on Microsoft Word.

First, you highlight the area that you want to comment on.

You can right click and click new comment.

Or, you can highlight the area and come to the top and click the "plus comment" button.

Either way, you can input your comment and they will show up on the right side of the

window.

Once you are done commenting, you just click back in the body of the text and it will bring

you back to your work.

That is one feature, comment.

Like I showed earlier, if you want to insert a comma, anywhere, or any other kind of editing,

all that will be tracked so that when the owner of the paper or the document opens it

they can see what you have done or what you recommended.

Those are the two features of the review pane that I've learned are really vital in having

people review your work, both in education and in my work.

I work in the military and I work in a Staff currently and we do research and prepare documents

and the routing chain usually consists of somewhere from 15-20 people.

Everyone will be looking at the same document and they will save it with any changes, recommendations,

or comments that they may have.

They will send it back to the originator of the document for them to take.

This next step I will show you is where you can take all the different people's feedback

that you have gotten on your work and incorporate them.

Say you had 3 people look at your work, you can take their comments from different saved

documents.

Here I have journal article review 1 on the left and journal article review 2 which is

on the right.

Essentially, they are the same paper that I originally drafted, but they have seen different

people review them.

There are different comments and different edits to the document.

If I want to take both of these documents and combine them so that the comments and

edits are in one place this is what you are going to do: come to the top, still in the

review tab, and there is a button called "compare."

Right now I am in the compare documents layout, I am going to go to combine documents now.

Choose the original document, journal article review Casey 1, then the revised document,

journal article review Casey 2.

Then click "OK."

The document pops up, it labelled itself document 4.

I am going to put this in the big window.

As you scroll through, you'll see that the changes and edits that I had made on the document

on the left are showing up.

Then the comments that I had embedded on the document on the right are showing up as well.

Essentially you took two documents, and combined all the edits and feedback into one.

This makes it easier for the originator to go through and make changes as they see fit.

This is a really vital tool I've learned for education because some of the most important

feedback and advice that you get comes from your peers and people looking at your work.

They may have looked at something differently than you and they can ask a question that

you may not have necessarily thought of.

That can give you new insight and new ideas on where to go with your work.

I hope you learned something here.

Again, this is Microsoft Word 2016, but any version you have whether it is on a Mac or

a PC, these tools and features are inherent in both.
