Kamakura City, Kanagawa.

In a traditional city with long history,

Nacchan and Cathy does again the Japan in Motion and Ask Japanese

Boosting Luck tour.

The latter half will also boost many types of luck.

Hello, I'm Cathy Cat from Ask Japanese.

I'm Natsuko Aso a.k.a Nacchan from Japan in Motion.

I'm so full.

So full and enjoying Kamakura so much,

I feel something is missing.

-That's called Betsu-bara in Japanese? -Betsu-bara?

-Even if you're full, you can still eat sweets? -Let's go.

This one looks good.

-Imo...Imo Yoshikan? -Hmm

What led them with their Betsubara was,

Imo-Yoshikan Komachidori store.

They say they had some sweets to boost your love luck.

What kind of sweets could it be?

It's done.

Take a look!

This is so cute.

Ice cream with heart shaped marshmallows

This will surely be loved by girls.

Men could also order as a lovely guy item.

One, two...

Ate it.

-Will it boost my love? -Yes

Maybe I'll find a handsome partner by the end of the shoot.

-A great guy may be giving us some sexy smiles. -Oh no.

Cathy and Nacchan fills their extra stomach.

They head on to the next place to boost their love fortune.

-Since we ate the heart shaped ice cream -We did.

We came to a shrine famous for Forever Ties.

-What did you say? -Forever ties.

-Love ties -Love ties!

Even though you want to be tied forever,

but love must come first.

-Love ties! -Yes, here is Kuzuharaoka Shrine.

-Let's go and tie the knot -Yes

Let's boost our love fortune.

-Let's go -Boost our love.

Here we go

10 minutes by car from Kamakura Station.

This Kuzuharaoka Shrine is getting popular as the power spot for love fortune.

Inside the shrine there are two rocks named the man rock and the woman rock

where you tie a 5yen coin with a red string to the rock of your opposite sex.

Both will tie their love fortune string on.

A lot of people has already tied their knots.

The right is the man rock, and the left is the woman rock.

So the woman ties on the man rock,

-So let's tie this 5 yen coin -Let's do.

-Full already -I wonder where to put it.

Somewhere here?

-Tied it so strong -Ok

No one can escape.

-How about you? -Here I go

It's actually pretty hard to tie it.

I guess it's hard to tie the knot.

It's really hard. It is.

OK

-Hope it comes true -Hopefully.

The key here is writing your wish on a heart shaped Ema frame.

What are they going to wish for?

-Done it -Done writing.

Here, me...Cathy

You...my destiny.

We shall tie our knots happily,

hopefully we can travel a lot (heart)

Since I like to travel, I hope I find someone I can travel with.

And you, Nacchan?

Me, Natsuko Aso.

You, my destiny prince I have not met yet.

A person I definitely found to love

will love me, and will propose to me by 2020.

I will turn 30 in 2020,

and I want to marry by then.

There is a specific goal.

So I specifically wrote "Propose to me"

To make the wish come true, let's tie it.

I think our love fortune has gone up,

The must be something else.

This one.

This is a mark in Japan, but people abroad won't understand it.

This is a mark of money.

I moved lately so I've used a lot of money.

-So realistic -It is

-Let's go raise our money fortune -Let's do that.

A little break. What type of temple or shrine do people visit?

Let's Ask Japanese.

When do you go to temples and shrines?

Only in the new years maybe.

By the fortune draw and give offerings

and pray.

I like to take photos so I go and take some.

-Do you upload on Instagram? -Yes.

Shrines for the new year.

As the first visit of the new year.

What do you do on that visit?

I ask that I will do my best so make my wish come true.

When I was the senior in high school, I asked to succeed in the entrance exam.

If there is some suggestion on a specific shrine, let us know.

In Shizuoka, I always go to Mishima-Taisha.

There is a huge lake there,

and you go by it.

I think that part is beautiful.

I went to Kamakura before and saw the Ofuna Kannon.

The stairs up there is pretty long,

but it was beautiful to see.

Where was that by Tokyo Tower? Dojoji!

It's near the Tokyo Tower,

and behind the temple, you can see the Tokyo Tower.

-Amazing, it will be a great photo spot. -Yes

That'll be all the questions. Thank you.

The next spot we came is the Zeni-Arai Benzaiten.

Ugafuku Shrine.

Love and money, with these two, life will be easier.

Let's go and see.

As the name says, this is a power spot for money fortune.

They will raise the money fortune with a method which has been here for 750 years.

So let's go and see.

Here you wash your money to raise your money fortune.

-Your own money? -Yes.

-Ok, let's try -Let's go

The place they went to wash their money was inside a cave.

In a very calm and silent atmosphere

your feeling concentrates more.

The money you washed shouldn't be used so quickly.

-You should keep it? -Yes.

It's not so common that you clean your money,

-no. Now the money is shining -It sure is.

-It feels good. -Yes.

I will keep this 100yen coin as a lucky charm.

Yes, it feels good.

Come money, come.

Within the people visiting this shrine,

there are people who wash lucky charms and lottery tickets, and other things related with money.

Hopefully you can raise your money fortune here.

So, the final part is Sasuke Inari Shrine.

The Torii gates are beautiful, aren't they?

-Does Sasuke Inari have something to do with Fushimi Inari in Kyoto?

-Yes, it's a branch -Branch

So let's go and see.

I actually have not gone to the Fushimi Inari in Kyoto.

-I have -Really?

So it's my first time to walk through so many red gates.

-It's wonderful -Yes.

Especially the people from abroad but, taking pictures of the Torii and..

-Quite popular -You see it often.

I see it often, and it looks amazing.

-Very photogenic. -Yes, beautiful.

-It's red -I think it's good luck just being here.

This Sasuke Inari shrine is famous power spot with the fox.

What does the fox being famous mean?

What will they find at the end of the path?

-Look, so many -Very cute.

-Big and small -Amazing how many.

So many here.

There are so many fox items here and there.

How many are there?

Let's ask the chief priest.

Those little ones, how many are there in total?

Have you gone to the main building? There are around 6000 or more.

There are 1500 to 2000 over there.

There are small shrines over there,

and there should be about 500 there.

-So there would be about -Over 10,000?

So people who visit here buy it and leave it here?

They wish here,

and the people who return to thank for their wish come true,

those people leave theirs as well.

So it's a way to show appreciation.

-It's ok to take home? -About 10 to 20% of people take it home.

Of course people take it home.

-As they like? -Yes yes.

The small foxes are an evidence of the wishes coming true.

How about coming here with your wishes?

-A lot of things today. -yes.

I'm feeling everything will be better.

-Must be good -The weather unfortunately was not good today,

so I was quite worried about it,

but I really like about this weather of Kamakura.

It actually matches?

-A very mysterious atmosphere matches here -Yes.

I especially felt a lot of power here in Sasuke Inari.

The power spot is amazing. When you come to Japan, please come to Kamakura and,

go and visit many shrines.

I hope a lot of good things will happen to us.

-Hopefully -So see you again.

Umeda Sky Building, Nakanoshima and Dotonbori! - BIG IN JAPAN ep 4 - Duration: 16:25.

I may not usually drink coffee, but I do am Italian,

and I must say that this canned coffee is not

terrible, kinda sweetish, but still...

It comes warm from the vending machine, that's nice

Meanwhile: goodmorning, welcome back!

my voice is kinda funky because of yesterday's weather

today is sunny once again with some cold wind

that's why I have the scarf but still

it's a nice weather, it's always nice when it's sunny

that said, we can start this new day!

yeah yeah, I know, but you can't come to Japan

and stob by Yodobashi to try everything,

expecially what you can't afford!

it took me a while because I got lost in the alleys

but as you know I like to get lost [wind noise]

there's a lot of wind today, be patient

we made it to the Umeda Sky Building

lotsa wind today....

the Umeda Sky Building is one of the

main and most popular osservation spots on the city

because it is some 40 floors tall and on the top

there is an observatory where you can go

by purchasing a 1000 yen ticket

I didn't pay, I haven't got to the observatory

I used the windows all around

and I could still enjoy a great view

I find that 1000 yen is a little too musch for a cityscape, so...

even because my hotel is still 11 floors tall

with an open roof, so

I see the city from an high spot every day and night

It is a spectacular view from the top, 'cause already from where I was, a couple floors below

the observatory, the view was insane

expecially in a clear day like today, so you could spend those 1000 yen and get to the top

The alternatives are the Abeno Hakuras mall, if I remember the name correctly

which is the one near the hotel I've already shown you

which I found out is one of the biggest malls in the country and also one of the

tallest buildings in Japan, with its 300 meters

you can get to the observatory as well

but the ticket is 1500 yen

the last alternative is th Cosmotower

the prefecture... governative... something... the Osaka Prefectural Building

that is kinda in the same area of the acquarium and it costs 700 yen

three alternatives at three price points, you can decide where to go

I usually try to get into the malls, find a way to the top and enjoy the view from there

now, let's get moving, trying to survive the cold wind

and let's see if we can get to an unsusual spot!

this is something I think you can only see in Japan

only here in Osaka, it's something really unique

it's a street that goes through a building

behind me you can see the highway that goes through te building

I arrived during the weekend and I started exploring from the outer districts

so I was starting to think that Osaka was some sort of oasis of traditional Japan

but in the Umeda disctrict and on Nakanoshime Island where we are now

you can see the modern Japan

western style, suit and tie

with people, traffic and so on. There's also a few buildings in a more european style

that wouldn't look bad in any actual european capital

but they still are copies, just like

if we would build some pagodas donwntown Milano or something like that

Osaka is getting better by the minute

lotsa wind!

short metro ride, and we're in one of the most famous

busy, chaotic and colored areas of the whole city: Dotonbori!

the plan is to stay here until the sun goes down and watch it

transform in a labirinth of neon lights, but first, let's eat something!

Dotonbori is known as a street food paradise

with takoyaki leading the charge as one of the typical Osaka's dishes

I've already tried them and they do are different form the ones in Tokyo

they are smaller, with a different sauce that I did enjoyed more

and okonomiyaki, which I want to try, as I haven't last time

but what I want to try now is Ichi ramen, Ichiran, actually

which is a very popular ramen chain restaurant

everyone is talking about, saying it is very good

for my standards it might be a little pricy, but I want to try

I've just passed by the shop and there's quite a line

as I said yesterday, I don't usually show everything I eat, because

I don't think it is always a big part of the travel experience

when it's something peculiar, like today or like

the last time I came to Japan where I showed you more

because it was something I had never shown you

this time I'm showing less because most of it you've already seen

so there's no need to show again

that said, say hi to the guys staring at me because I'm talking to a camera

that said, let's go back, 'cause Ichiran is that way and I'm walking as I speak!

there are many peculiarities in these shops, starting with the customization

of your own bowl of ramen

then these single seat booths with the side things

and the fact that you don't see the people serving you, you can only see they're abdomen, it's quite weird

but in the end it costs less than I thought

'cause I thougth it would be more than 1000 yen, but it's just 890

plus all the stuff you want to add that have they're own price

I do think I've messed up something, but I'll make do!

Now I understand all the fuzz about it, it is actually good

the price, as I said it is not bad

890 yen for the base ramen, plus all the stuff you want as extras, the more, the pricier

it's a honest price, it's good, plentiful

I would say it is approved

my own advice is to not be scared of going too hard with customization

because the flavour is no too intense

I picked a mild spicyness

even if japanese people don't really like spicy, we still are in Asia

but I got the broth as strong as possible and still was quite mild

so, once again, Ichiran: approved

now let's jump in the chaos of colors, sound and stuff that is Dotombori!

I got into a shopping street thet goes north from Dotombori

I walked for at least a couple kilometers and it is still going

I'll write the mane somewhere, or I already did

it goes on forever, it probably ends where I was this morning!

so I got out and I saw on Maps that there are a few temples around here

so let's go visit some temples, I haven't go to many of them yet

then I'll get back to Dotombori after sunset

day or night, the traffic here in Dotombori doesn't seem to end

between lights, colors, sound, music and the smell of food

it is time for me too to find something in my stomach

I'm looking around because I can't find a way through

after that i'll get back to the hotel

that is all for today, I'll see you in the next video!

【Beard Papa】Japan's World Famous Cream Puffs | Dessert Vlog - Duration: 6:18.

Hi everyone! It's Jenny

Today I'm at Beard's Papa

They're really easy to spot They're bright yellow so you can't miss it

They're a Japanese store and they specialize in cream puffs

They started out in Japan now they're frickin everywhere

Alright so I got their green tea cream puff

This is the flavor that they have every day

They also have their original and chocolate They will always have that and some stores will have a weekly flavor or monthly

For this week I got their s'mores

So you get to choose the filling you want so when you get to the store of these are not filled

they fill it in on the spot and you get to choose from vanilla chocolate or green tea

I got the green tea with green tea filling and these s'mores with their original vanilla filling

Well first I'm going to try their green tea filling

It's super flaky and crunchy

Um I didn't get to the filling yet but there's like

a big asshole there

I don't know if you can see it. Look. Look at that

So they kind of scammed me on the filling it's not fully filled

I mean it's only $3.50 for this

It's supposed to be fully filled but I guess it's not

Alright. I'm going to try the filling now

I really like the green tee filling

It's definitely (kids...)

It definitely tastes like green tea It's not matcha so there's none of that bitterness to it

It tastes like... If you've ever had the green tea Kit Kat, it tastes like that

hmm

Next I'm gonna try their monthly flavor which is the s'mores

It's just their regular chocolate eclair with a toasted marshmallow on top

Same crunchiness at the first one hmm and it's pretty hot right now so the

chocolate is melting a little bit hmm

it's definitely not dark chocolate

Mmm. I really like the filling It's really smooth It's a little bit thick

Let me get the marshmallow on top

You can definitely tell it's not homemade marshmallow

Because it has this thin layer outside that's little bit like hard

So fresh marshmallow or house-made marshmallow wouldn't taste like this so I definitely feel

like its store-bought marshmallow

so it's more like a gimmicky thingy I guess

But the cream puff itself is really good just not the marshmallow part..

I think for the price these are really worth it

unless they scam you from the cream

but yes for the price, it's really worth it it's only $3.50 each

and it tastes really good

The fillings great

The texture is awesome Very crunchy

Alright. So that is Beard's Papa

Thank guys for watching my video today

If you like it give it a thumbs up and

for more dessert vlogs, please subscribe to my channel and

see you guys next time

bye

10 Best Places To Visit In Japan | 2018 - Duration: 11:45.

10 Best Places To Visit In Japan.

From glimmering skyscrapers and neon lights, to traditional tea shops and geisha, Japan

is a charming confluence of new and old with a distinct character that separates it from

the rest of Asia.

With so much to see and do it can be difficult to know where to start, so to help inspire

you we've listed ten of the very best places to visit.

1: Tokyo.

With over 12 million people, Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world.

With its huge skyscrapers, underpasses, overpasses and crowds of pedestrians, Tokyo may not seem

the most attractive city on the surface, but the city has a vibrant charm all of its own

and the street level detail is what makes Tokyo such an incredibly interesting place

to explore.

The city has many major sights to visit such as Senso‐ji Temple in the old downtown area

of Asakusa or the fashion hub of Shibuya from where all new trends are said to emanate.

2: Hakone.

The beautiful national park in the Hakone area is around 50 miles west of Tokyo and

just to the south of Mount Fuji, Japan's most sacred peak.

The area consists of a handful of small villages and hamlets all connected by a variety of

local transport, including buses, cable cars and a mountain railway.

Hakone has plenty to see and do, from tasting eggs boiled in volcanic waters to taking a

boat trip across beautiful Lake Ashi.

Or maybe you will just sit back and relax whilst soaking in one of the many therapeutic

hot spring baths.

3: Kyoto.

Home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines,

this ancient city showcases the heart and soul of traditional Japan.

Kyoto boasts an array of world‐class gardens, majestic festivals and delicate cuisine, all

of which make much of the rhythms of nature and the changing of the seasons.

Grid‐like Kyoto does have its fair share of neon and concrete, but the discerning eye

will soon pick out Kyoto's sacred shrines, time‐honoured teahouses and mysterious geisha

hidden down the quiet alleyways.

4: Nara.

Just 40 minutes by local train from Kyoto, Nara is renowned for the wealth of its Buddhist

and Shinto heritage.

Nara was formerly the end of the Silk Road and was the area which first saw Buddhist

teaching making the transition across the ocean from China.

The myriad of shrines and temples are all set against the backdrop of the low lying

mountains and in the midst of Nara Park, which is home to a vast population of pesky deer,

who will happily munch on your guide books and anything else they can get their noses

into.

5: Kinosaki Onsen.

For the quintessential Japanese hot spring destination, look no further than Kinosaki

Onsen.

The town boasts seven bathhouses which sit among pretty streets of traditional wooden

buildings and narrow bridges.

Visitors to Kinosaki Onsen enjoy a stay in a Japanese inn where sumptuous cuisine is

served at low tables in tatami rooms.

Afterwards guests dress in provided 'yukata' and 'geta', light kimonos and wooden sandals,

and take to the streets for a pleasant evening stroll around town.

6: Hiroshima.

Hiroshima is a city that needs little introduction.

It is of course infamous for being the site of one of two atomic bombs dropped on Japan

at the end of World War II.

Despite it's tragic past, Hiroshima is now a bustling and vibrant city.

The Peace Park and Museum are a poignant reminder of Hiroshima's past; other attractions include

Hiroshima Castle, the baseball stadium and the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art.

Shukkei‐en Garden is also well worth an afternoon stroll with a number of tea houses

dotted about the grounds.

7: Osaka.

Osaka is Japan's second city and an extremely vibrant and lively place to stay.

The city aquarium is world class and you cannot stay in Osaka without taking a ride on one

of the city's several giant ferris wheels.

Osaka Castle is well worth a visit despite being a reconstruction as the original was

burnt down at the end of World War Two and you will find a variety of very interesting

museums scattered throughout the city.

After dark Osaka really comes alive, and a walk through the bright lights of the Nanba

district is a great way to take in the atmosphere, with some great people‐watching opportunities.

8: Kamakura.

Just 50km from Tokyo, Kamakura is a world away from the lights and action of Japan's

buzzing capital.

This peaceful city operates at a much more leisurely pace of life and is brimming with

gorgeous buildings, quaint cafes and temples galore.

The main feature of the city is the Great Buddha of Kamakura, a bronze statue which

dominates a plaza in the city.

For some more cultural enrichment, travellers should head to one of the numerous temples

that speckle the region of Kamakura.

If the weather is nice, another popular hotspot for visitors and locals alike is the Itsuki

Garden, a delightful spot of natural beauty.

Grab a drink or a bite to eat at the cafe and immerse yourself in the serenity of your

surroundings.

You might even be able to see the Great Buddha in the distance if it's a clear day.

9: Himeji.

Tucked away on the coast of Japan, looking out over the Harima Nada Sea, Himeji is the

home of the most beautiful castle in the entire country.

Sitting on a raised brick platform, the castle gleams pearly white and is adorned with numerous

pointed roofs, each one lined with traditional decor.

It becomes even more stunning when the cherry blossoms bloom, surrounding the castle with

a haze of pink.

It is both a beautiful sight and an important one because of its historical significance.

Dating back to 1333, the castle was passed down from hand to hand during Japan's feudal

times and survived numerous battles, natural disasters and even proposed demolitions until

it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.

Once you've taken in the castle, take a wander through Himeji town and cast your eye

over its crumbling buildings, relics of a bygone era.

10: Miyajima.

Translating as 'Shrine Island', Miyajima is by far and away one of the most popular

destinations in Japan – and with good reason.

The island's pride and joy is its Itsukushima shrine and particularly the Torii Gate, which

is built in the sea and is often referred to as the 'floating shrine'.

This gate is considered to be the boundary between the living and the dead and in order

to maintain its purity, births and deaths are forbidden from taking place near it.

Another unique feature of this region is the deer that can be found in every nook and cranny

of the island.

These cheeky animals will steal the food right out of your hand if you're not careful.

According to the Shinto religion, the deer are sacred as it is believed that they are

the messengers of God.

The island also has an aquarium, which is well worth visiting.

Amazing Universal Studios Japan VLOG - Duration: 20:45.

hi guys, It's Kyung-Ah from Ryu's Penna

Today, I'm at Japan's Universal Studios since a year

Shall we take a look on how it is?

The tremendous atmosphere of Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

you can feel how Hogsmeade

we're waiting to ride the Harry Potter End of Forbidden Journey

The line is too long, we might have to wait about 90 minutes..

The line is too long, we might have to wait about 90 minutes.. -Jinchul : I'm hungry!!

we skipped our breakfast LOL

So we're hungry.. we saw that everyone is eating snacks from convenient stores

We should've too, I did last year, but I was so busy today

-Jinchul : I think I hurried too much

So, we're going to eat something right after this ride LOL

-Jinchul : it'll be delicious!

And I took a film of the ride last time, but that was an issue ( about it's ok or not ok to film it)

So, please know that I'm not going to shoot this Harry Potter ride

If you want to see the ride clip, click the i card above, and see the clip from last year

well, we'll go to ride it~

Go Go~!

How was it?

-Jinchul : it was so good

-Jinchul : the cubic effects were fantastic

-Jinchul : It was so real, even that I knew it was a video

And honestly, I don't like horror mazes, so I was scared a little when the dementors came out LOL

Because it's 4D and some figures were very real, so it was scary

So.. of you get scared easily by ghosts, it might be scary, but it's a good ride without that point

It's so fun! I really recommend it

-Jinchul : it's nice like a roller coaster

Hogwarts standing strong in the middle of the stone mountain

Isn't it huge and beautiful?

Hogsmeade's specialty! Butter beer!

we're going to drink butter beer!

we'll try It

It has cream butter on the top, and its' taste is unique

It really tastes like butter beer but it's a non-alcohol drink

-Jinchul : it tastes like beer… isn't it?

Doesn't it? But it's non-alcohol

Isn't it nice?

It was really nice!

Jinchul : the butter makes it so tasty

It's tasty

Oh, you sliced it big

This dance comes out when I eat something tasty LOL

Since I like chicken, I ordered the chicken and pork rib platter for both

I'll try the chicken now

It's the chicken wing

The taste is really nice, good good

Honestly… if it wasn't tasty with this price, I would've got angry

-Jinchul : I admit it, It's too expensive

This is about $20 a dish, isn't it expensive?

-Jinchul : I think that students that are on a trip will think of this price as a burden

A bite of the side menu potato!

The potato's nice

It'd been better, if it was more crispy

It's more soggy, rather than crispy, but it's nice

Now, time for the huge corn! (it's not a model)

The background makes me look like a grandma eating a corn at the fireplace

The taste is weird

-Jinchul : what is this taste? (The taste was a bit boring )

The corn grains were very small

The corn's not so good

Everything was nice except this one, I'm not eating this!

There was an owl at the Owl Post in the town (it's a real animal)

you can't miss the goods shop!

(Cute Harry Potter owl key rings ) Owls!

Isn't it cute?

It's really cute~~ owls from Harry Potter

There was a magic wand key ring also

Since the wand Is expensive, this would be better LOL

Expecto! Petronum!

guys! there's Dobby the house elf here!

There were many kinds of key rings here

Cute

guys, It's a butter beer cup

It's really pretty

The detail of the cream is alive, so it's better than buying a normal cup

Cheers!

-Jinchul : oh, the detail is very good

-Jinchul : the bobbles go up if you turn the cup over

It's really pretty

This might be a pocket note book

(amazing!!) I thought it as a normal note book, but the paper was so vintage and pretty

-Jinchul : it's not just white

Yeah, the detail is amazing

Jinchul : it really looks like old letter paper

It's really pretty

I like Gryffindor the most

-Jinchul : Gryffindor is the prettiest

Gryffindor!

-Jinchul : this is the team who's last place everytime

The talking hat that chooses the team!

-Jinchul : Tell me! where am I going? LOL

The pens are pretty

look at the detail, isn't it amazing?

Crucio! LOL

There was a nice street performance outside

Even the entrance of the goods shop is brilliant

wands until the ceiling! this is Ollivander's store

There were many real models everywhere

Come out baby!

Now Honey Duke's goods shop! and chocolate frogs!

Japanese Dreamcast Video Game Collection | Living in Japan - Duration: 5:05.

Konnichiwa! Here's a look at my current Dreamcast collection here in Japan. It's

not much as of yet, but will hopefully continue to grow as time goes on. As

devotees of the system and of gaming history in general are aware the

Dreamcast was Sega's final entry into the home console market before becoming

the Sega we all know today. If you're interested in the full story behind this

particular swan song, well, welcome to the Internet. I've got a plain Jane Dreamcast and

controller, which, remarkably, are hardly yellowed at all, as well as a funky

*MILLENNIUM 2000* controller with the see-through bits that allow you to, uh, see

through it. They, along with the VMUs, are all in fantastic working order save

for a bum system clock battery that I'll be changing in the near future and it's

and it's been a lot of fun finally playing through a lot of the classics for which this

system is so fondly remembered. So far, and in no particular order,

I've got Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure International, a super-fancy 10th

Anniversary Edition of Sonic Adventure 2, Phantasy Star Online original

release and version 2, Biohazard (otherwise known as Resident Evil) Code:

Veronica, Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2, Powerstone, Crazy Taxi, Ready

2 Rumble Boxing, Samba de Amigo, Chu-Chu Rocket, Evolution, Shenmue, and

Berserk: Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc: Flowers of Oblivion Chapter. If that

last one sounds like a mouthful, welcome to the world of Japan's proud tradition

of verbose naming schemata, particularly in anime and manga

whence Berserk derives its content. Something you've probably noticed is just how much

English is involved in these game titles indeed a lot of games in Japan are

titled primarily in English usually with katakana subtitles which phonetically

mimic their pronunciation. This is primarily because in Japan English is

cool. Or, if you want to be cynical because it likely reduces time spent

developing marketing materials for international releases. Anyway reading

katakana is fairly straightforward and because it's the syllabary primarily

used for the representation of foreign sounds, usually fairly easy to suss out

their intended meaning. Some things to keep in mind: As katakana is a *syllabary*,

and not an *alphabet* as English and many other languages have, and realistically

made for the Japanese palette, the pronunciation is almost never 1-to-1.

Sonic Adventure becomes ソニックアドベンチャー, Power Stone becomes パワーストーン, and

Samba de Amigo becomes, well, サンバ de アミーゴ.

Obviously, the transliteration process works better with some languages than

others. The rules for transliteration are not especially

consistent, but there are a few rules of thumb. First, there is no V sound in

Japanese, so most Vs end up as Bs, as in Sonic Adventure and Code: Veronica.

If you're aiming for accuracy, as with Evolution, the technically correct

transliteration for the V sound is ウ with a dakuten followed by a

half-size ア, イ, エ, or オ. Considering that the V sound simply doesn't exist in

Japanese, however, native pronunciation of this convention typically sounds somehow

*less* like a V than the other method, and is in any case entirely less common,

but still worth knowing. On the topic of half-size characters, they are especially

common in katakana. Generally they come after another kana meant to represent

the initial sound, themselves representing what we would call the

vowel property of the syllable, as in Phantasy Star Online with big フ and

half-size ア for ファ, Ready to Rumble with both デ and ィ for ディ and ト and ゥ for トゥ,

Shenmue with big シ and little エ for シェ, and so on. The one that goes *before*

the character it modifies is the half-size ツ, which represents a kind of

glottal stop (⟨ʔ⟩) meant to accentuate the initial,

consonant aspect of the character which follows, as in Sonic Adventure where it

more accurately mimics the hard ⟨k⟩ sound by morphing the pronunciation from ソニく to ソニック,

and in Chu-Chu Rocket where we go from ロケト to ロケット. One

character unique to katakana is the one that resembles a long dash (ー), known as chōonpu (長音符),

literally "long sound symbol". As its name suggests, its sole purpose is to extend

the vowel aspect of the preceding character, as in Power Stone where it

extends パワ to パワー and ストン to ストーン. As with the rest of this whole shebang,

the placement of chōonpu is not perfectly consistent, but you'll get used

to seeing where they tend to go pretty quickly.

Well, that's it. As I said, I hope to expand this humble game collection of

mine going forward, but in the meantime, these tips, coupled with a healthy

command of standard, full-size katakana characters, should have you well on your

own way to mastering what is colloquially known as カタカナ英語, so

study hard! 頑張って
