Hi I'm Nicole and I'm here to learn.
So the second book I've read so far this year has been Self-Knowledge by The School of Life.
The School of Life is a really big YouTube channel that talks about things like
philosophy and how to know yourself better and psychology, literature and...
just the humanities and liberal arts in general.
And it's a channel that I really like and I am
in general, I suppose, pretty interested in self-development I guess
but I feel like it sounds really corny and "self-help-ish" to say that
but essentially that's what it is and I'm OK with that!
So I read this book and it only took me about a day
It's really short
And I actually found it really good.
There are some exercises throughout the book that
ask you certain questions and guide you through
how to process your thoughts and your feelings and that kind of thing and I found that really helpful.
That said, I feel like if you–well!
I feel like if you're a fan of the channel already–the YouTube channel for The School of Life–
I feel like you will likely benefit from and enjoy the book.
However, I also feel like if you *are* a fan of the channel
and you have gone through their content
and all of that stuff, none of this will be particularly new
to you and if you read The Book of Life
which is free online from The School of Life
again, I feel like none of it will be particularly new to you
but I think it's really nice to have things all in one place
and it's a really nice gift that you could give someone
Maybe this would have been useful before Christmas...
But whatever! It's never too late.
So, I don't know. I gave it a 4/5 stars
which, for me, with these kinds of books
I suppose doesn't really mean that much.
It's a lot more emotional than anything else.
I feel like I can't really ask that much more from the book
Um, it's a great kind of gift type book
I can't really think of a type of person that this would not
be for...though I can think of lots of people who
would not be keen on it...if you know what I mean.
like, I feel like this...if anybody were to
um, employ the techniques that are posited in the book
that would be really useful.
But I can think of people who might pick it up and say
"Ugh I don't need this kind of psycho babble" blahblahblah that kind of thing
SO I'm going to say, I'd recommend it to people
who are already fans of the channel,
to people who might be open to
the kind of introspection that the book
and the channel in general and School of Life as a thing
encourages. And anyone who's going through
lots of anxiety or borderline depression–
I feel like for full on depression I am not a psychologist
I cannot tell anybody what to do. I don't know
what the best things are in that instance
BUT I feel like for people going through a bit of a rough patch,
have experienced social anxieties, issues with communicating–those kinds of things–
I feel like, as someone who's experienced some of those things,
this book would definitely be useful for
those kinds of people...maybe.
Soo, check it out if you like!
If anybody has read this book already
and totally agrees with me or totally disagrees with me
let me know. If you like School of Life, let me know.
I think they're cool.
If you have any other recommendations
knowing that I quite liked this one
let me know in the comments below
and I'll see you again next time. Bye!
