We found out we were having twins the day after Christmas of 2014,

so on Christmas day we told our family we were having a baby

then the next day we went to the ultrasound and they said

'Oh I have something to tell you' and then they said 'there's two'

and then we were like laughing hysterically and we didn't believe them

but we were having twins.

And then that same day after Christmas, we found out that one of the twins,

Charlotte, had some conditions in utero and then in February we found out she

had the congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot.

For the first couple of months it was relatively just like taking

care of two newborn babies, which I think was good for us because

it was already such a huge adjustment to get used to having two babies.

And then after, like down the road her health complications started to

manifest more and then she has spent so much time in the hospital.

It kind of shook her, I think.

It's helped her to develop a lot of resilience I think,

and she is very brave I think in the face of difficulty.

Like she's gained a lot of confidence, which she didn't necessarily have before

because physically she couldn't do the things that she wanted to do.

And when she started to walk, because she was a late bloomer,

you could just see that she was so excited about being able to

pull herself up or being able to like walk around the house and

it's really been cute to like hear her pitter patter footsteps

following her sister or like following us around.

Like you can't really prepare,

Like they say you can't really prepare for children, you can't really prepare

for life with a child that has medical needs.

But at the same time, I feel like it's also an experience that

I wouldn't trade for like a normal experience.

We've learned so much and I feel like, um,

our family has grown so much because of it

and I hope that it will enable us, as people in the world,

to just be more empathetic to others and for our girls to have empathy and

appreciation for life and what a precious like gift it is.

Mechanical Engineering at the University of Huddersfield - Charlotte Pattison - Duration: 1:00.

As I got older I started really enjoying maths and physics at school. I started

putting two and two together and thinking what can I do and engineering,

especially mechanical engineering, was always the first thing that came out. It

was just something that I knew I would enjoy. I've been to quite a few

universities for open days, as soon as I came here and spoke to some of their

lecturers I just thought yeah I'm going to come because I enjoyed it so much. The

course itself, I really enjoy the balance between lectures and tutorials.

The facilities are brilliant and also the staff are extremely passionate about

what they do, and it's good to be able to learn from people that are like industry

experts. My placement was at GE oil and gas in Newcastle, it taught me that my

course was really useful so it built my confidence in my own skills and it also

helped give me an idea of what I wanted to do once I've finished. My course is

very intellectually stimulating. It's challenging, fun, and rewarding.
