Do you have ADD slash ADHD or are you just really creative and have a lot of
energy? The first medication that I was ever prescribed was in the fourth grade
for ADHD and it was Ritalin. I struggled all through school trying to pay
attention to the subject matter and the work that was placed in front of me and
I believe Ritalin did help. My mom tells me that Ritalin did help. Just like all
of my other videos I'm not here to debunk ADD or ADHD and say that there's
never a valid place for medication. However, I offer you up something to
consider. I accepted this ADD diagnosis and I struggled with ADD or ADHD all
through my childhood and into adulthood but here's how I struggled with it: every
time I was placed in a situation where I was forced to sit still and pay
attention to boring subject matter presented by boring people I was bored
and it was hard for me to pay attention. I didn't everr take into consideration the
few classes that interested me that had really inspiring teachers and that I
actually grasped all of the subject matter. No, I had ADD. ADHD. I couldn't sit
still. I had a lack of focus. The subconscious
acceptance of me having ADD or ADHD carried into my adulthood where I found
myself working boring jobs that I didn't like, and guess what, it was difficult for
me to pay attention. I'm sure that doesn't sound familiar to any of you...
School is typically where the majority of people are diagnosed with this ADHD /
ADD. Our school system is based off the Industrial Revolution. It's antiquated
and it's still preparing people for jobs that are becoming less and less relevant.
Teachers are getting paid less and less and they're having to deal with more and
more disorderly, wild and unruly kids. I was never one of them.
Unfortunately, even though some teachers really have teaching in their heart and
they want to impart their knowledge and wisdom, it's become a system that has a
bunch of high paid babysitters. Moving forward. Most of the kids that I have
experienced, and speaking from my own personal experience, when we are placed
in front of something that captivates us there's no problem with detention. But if
we have a lot of creativity and passion and fire in us and you try to force us to
sit in front of something boring, well yeah, good luck with that! And in come the
drugs.. Again, the drugs might be helping some people but they also might be
masking and preventing us from looking at the deeper things within us that
really could contribute to our lives and make our lives flourish and also help
people and this world. In addition to finding myself in boring positions in
boring workplaces, I was forced to work with numbers.
Now numbers had always been a big issue for me and since I had a difficulty with
numbers, up the medication, right? Then I might be able to focus more. It helped a
little bit, but not so much. Which brings me to something I'm going to sprinkle in
here on this conversation. In addition to accepting that I had ADD and many other
things, I also thought that I was dumb - that I was not very intelligent and that
was because I wasn't able to comprehend the subject matter in school and I also
wasn't able to number crunch the way that everyone else was around me in my
work environment. So I had ADD. I was dumb. I'll stop the sad story there. I
finally realized, recognized that when I was placed in an environment where I
felt creative, that I was inspired, I had no lack of focus, I thrived. When I was
placed in situations that needed to use a lot of intensity I thrived. When I left
my boring job and I started trading the stock market, which pulled at me for some
reason, I don't know how such a complex thing could pull it someone as dumb as
me but it did and it captivated me and I
know the majority of you watching this if I started talking about the stock
market and more than the stock market, trading options and training futures and
commodities, your eyes would glaze over. But I thrived in that environment. I
loved it and I picked up on it quickly and I enjoyed it thoroughly!
I had no lack of focus or attention. I would sit down with the financial
advisers of my parents and my grandparents and I had actually a couple
of them call me for advice. That's because I was absorbing the information
no matter how complex it was. I found a creative space where I thrived and
although I'm not good with numbers, because it was intriguing to me and
because it made sense I was able to learn. Maybe you have ADD maybe
there's some imbalance in your brain, or maybe if
you're placed in an environment that's not super creative and stimulating to
you the chemical imbalance shows up and it manifests itself by you being bored
and having a lack of focus and attention. And a bonus for this video. If you feel
stupid in any area of life like I did with math and many other subjects, don't
be so quick to judge. We have our own strengths. When I got into a position of
being able to delegate numbers stuff to someone else who was more natural at it
than me I did. So if you think that you have ADD or ADHD find a creative,
stimulating environment, thing, hobby for you to play with and see how you do. Find
out what your strengths are and nurture those. I'd be willing to bet that the
majority of people throughout our human history who have been the most adorned
and admired artists and creative minds would have been diagnosed with ADD or
ADHD. So do you have ADD or ADHD or is it that our creatively sterile school
system and typical workforce, typical cubicle job does not align with who you
are? Something to think about
