My name is Chuck Lief and I have the privilege as serving as the president of Naropa University in Boulder Colorado.

It's a joy for me to announce today the establishment of the Chogyam Trungpa Institute at Naropa.

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the Tibetan scholar, Buddhist meditation teacher, poet, and artist,

was the founder of Naropa in 1974.

And for the forty four years since the Naropa founding

hundreds of faculty and thousands of students have come together to explore the ways in which we can join

the wisdom of the eastern contemplative traditions with the academic disciplines of the west.

The Chogyam Trungpa Institute will be a place where the impact of his teachings can be

rigorously studied, explored,

new creative forms can arise from that work. It will also serve as an archival repository for

literally thousands of pieces of written material that he created.

Artwork and all sorts of other important artifacts of the remarkable life that he had, specially in the west.

We believe that the work Trungpa Rinpoche did from the time he arrived in North America in 1970

was really instrumental in the creation of what today is called the modern mindfulness movement

and established the strong interest in Buddhist practice I think in the western world.

The establishment of the Chogyam Trungpa Institute at Naropa is only made possible because of the collaboration with many other people.

Notable Mrs. Diana Mukpo who was Trungpa Rinpoche's wife

and who has beautifully and powerfully protected his work and his teachings since his death in 1987.

Were also in close collaboration with Kalapa Media.

Kalapa Media is the publishing arm of Shambhala international.

Which is the Buddhist organization that Trungpa Rinpoche founded when he arrived North America in 1970.

Finally are delighted that a collaboration has taken place

with the Shambhala archives, under the direction of Mrs. Carolyn Gimian.

And not only have we collaborated with Carolyn but we've managed to convince her

to step in as the first executive director of the Chogyam Trungpa Institute.

Something I'm sure that will lead to great success as we establish the work here in Boulder Colorado.

I wanna thank everyone for your interest in the Chogyam Trungpa Institute,

and look forward with sharing information with you over the coming months.

I invite you to hear so coming remarks from Mrs. Diana Mukpo and Mrs. Carolyn Gimian

who will talk about the Chogyam Trungpa Institute from their points of view.

Thank you very much!

On behalf of the Mukpo family I would like to express our happiness.

That finally we have been able to create a repository of Trungpa's Rinpoches teachings at Naropa University.

When Trungpa Rinpoche decided to found Naropa

Which was initially an institute and then became the first Buddhist inspired university in the United States.

He

wanted to model it on the great Nalanda Univeristy in India .

and then he decided that would be too arrogant to actually use that name

but he wanted to found it on the same principles as Nalanda.

and therefore called in Naropa.

and

almost thirty one years now after his death

we have a repository where we can

house many of his works and also create an educational system where we can

educate more editors, because we still have a lot of unpublished material.

I think he would of been so happy that this

had happened at Naropa

because of the purity of the intention

of this educational organization that his teachings would remain in their purest form.

And also be accessible for people from generations to come.

It is extremely timely that those people who are now getting older who are his students

can still have the influence

to make sure this is done appropriately for the benefit of future generations.

People who will come after us

who never had the opportunity to know him and receive his teachings.

But can still have that benefit from the work that is being done at Naropa.

Hello I am Carolyn Gimian the newly appointed director of the Chogyam Trungpa Institue here at Naropa University.

I am delighted and honored to be able to shepherd this project for the next few years as it gets going.

For me the Chogyam Trungpa Institute is the culmination of about thirty plus years of work in archiving,

and preserving his

teachings in all their forms.

And now the institute is providing the opportunity to go from that activity to focusing more on access to the material

and to expand the audience of those who are interested in his teaching and in the man himself.

One of our first projects will be an online platform for his teachings, which were calling CHELA

The Chogyam Trungpa Electronic Library and Archive.

And that's made up of audio, video, transcriptions, so that we can have captioning of the audio and video also

photographs and many other artifacts that it will include.

So I'm really looking forward to that and that will really expand the audience.

We want to be sure that this is done in a way that

is not just data driven but also really audience based, so it speaks to people.

The Chogyam Trungpa Institute has the support of the Trungpa Rinpoches family.

It is also being supported by the Shambhala archives

and by the Allen Ginsberg Library here at Naropa. And many other organizations.

So I'm really pleased that so many people are supporting it and I think its important to be a collaborative effort.

And I'd like to invite all of you to join us and help

this institute realize it's potential.

Thank you!

[energetic music]

Are you excited to be here?

(Kids) Yes!!!

Can I get a high-five?

Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! Yeah! Awesome sauce!

Candy and Sweet Treats have always been a passion of mine.

Growing up, in the projects with my mom and my older brother,

at the age of eight, I was selling candies and all types of

confectionary goodies out of our mom's house.

So when people now see Sweet Candy Café they always say

Felicia, it's no surprise that you have a candy store.

I went back to school because I always wanted my master's degree

and the MBA was definitely the springboard in teaching us how

to set up a small business.

I think it's really important for young girls to see

strong female leaders.

because it shows them that, you know, I can do this.

I can be anything that I want to be.

I started the Candy Kids Wear Blazers program

to teach young girls about entrepreneurship

and professionalism.

Every girl is given a business blazer,

and we teach them the various things that it takes

to actually become a business owner,

but in a kid-friendly way.

(Girl) Hello, my name is Riley, welcome to Sweet Candy Café.

They are our next generation. They're our future.

To me black history month is about achievement, and

making history is about making a difference in my community.

It's about leaving a mark.

It's about making a change in the right direction.

Psychology with Criminology at the University of Huddersfield - Renee Farquharson - Duration: 1:00.

The course here at Huddersfield it just stood out as exactly what I wanted,

integrating the psychology and the criminal side of things, and I just knew

that I wanted to come here. The facilities at the uni are perfect.

Obviously psychology is very research-based but it's very good to be

able to have more of a hands-on approach with it as well.

The support at this university is really amazing, the lecturers are always

expressing how important it is that you know that they're there to help you. That

makes me feel very comfortable with asking them for help because they do

feel like a friend. I have enjoyed my university experience so much, doing a

course like psychology it opens a lot of doors especially at Huddersfield.

Everything is designed to make sure that you've learned everything you could

possibly need to to go out into the world and going on to being a criminal psychologist.

#WorldAtWestern - Fulbright at Western Michigan University: Dr. Scott Cowan - Duration: 2:12.

My name is Dr. Scott Cowan I'm in the School of Music, here at Western University

I am an associate professor in the jazz area, of which I am currently chairing

My Fulbright experience started in 2014 and it was in Londonderry Northern Ireland

As a Fulbright Scholar there at the University of Ulster I was

involved in performance practice assisting students to learn jazz or to

write jazz as well as writing a book.

I applied to Fulbright because I had heard

of the wonderful international opportunities, I wanted to also give my

family 3 kids and my wife an opportunity for us to to go out of the country

and do have more of an international experience more worldview.

Benefits of the Fulbright of course are that you are supported financially so that you can actually pull this off

I was contacted by Fulbright to spend a week as an

artist in Helsinki Finland, doing clinics and interacting with a whole another part

of European jazz and it was amazing... I also did a lot of performing and got

involved with the very vital that's small jazz scene I had opportunities to

to be on the BBC a number of times where my music was featured what have I

brought back I would say my life is enriched for ever I can't think of any

other kind of program like Fulbright that affords educators to visit other

parts of the world, expenses paid and to be able to leave a um.. positive stamps

This could be a life-changing experience for you

personally for your family and I would say by all means go for it

Journalism at the University of Huddersfield - Chi Xiohan and Sophie Li - Duration: 2:04.

I studied Journalism in Communication, University of China so I want to

continue it in UK. I choose Huddersfield because it is very famous for its high

teaching quality and it's very good facilities that can help me to learn my

major better. The modules I have to journalism in Eurasia working in the

media. My favourite module is called Video Journalism because the teacher

will not only tell me the knowledge in class, he will also like us to go out to

do some filming. What I like the most is medium policy because the tutor taught me

a lot. There are some essays and there are some reports, there are some

presentations. You can log-in your Uni account and do some reading before

your lecture, it's helped me a lot to keep up with the courses. I think the teachers

here are very friendly, they are very kind to help me if I have any questions. I

like to wrote a draft about my assessment and send to my tutor and he

always gave me a support and they'd back for me. In international office they gave

me some information about life in Huddersfield and how we can fade into

the new life here so I think that it's really good. The school center has a

Career Centre which we are just helped me knows about some internship and about

some placement. I have got an internship at Shaanxi Broadcasting Corporation is

in my hometown, in this summer holiday during which I work as live social news,

combining news with entertainment close to everyday life. Study here is a

first-class education. I think the experience here we are helped me when I

try to find a job in China. When I'm traveling around the other cities and

when I come back to here I feel really comfortable. It's like my second home in UK

Mentoring by Jacimaria Batista, University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Duration: 1:11.

- Just being a mentor, in general, is very rewarding.

Because, you see the person growing.

You see the students arriving as a freshman,

where they even don't know how to enter your office.

They are afraid to enter the office.

And then you see when they are seniors

or when the PHD students started and was unsure.

And then they are arguing with you.

When they're arguing with you, you know you got it.

So now, they know as much and more than you.

And then you see them graduating

and you see them going out and getting a job

and improving their family.

So being a mentor mainly in a state like Nevada

it's very important because we need

more educated people and education

change life, it changed my own life

and I know it change the life of many people.

I had graduated over 70 graduate students.

And I know it change their lives

because they keep in touch with me so I know

what's going on, they had change to better.

Podiatry at the University of Huddersfield - Lewis Nurney - Duration: 1:00.

I used to play football and I became injured so I went to the GP who referred

me for podiatry, who made me some insoles, some orthotics that were really really helpful,

and that was my first exposure to podiatry. I attended they opened at

University of Huddersfield and had a chat with the lecturers and the students at

the time, which were really informative and that helped guid my decision.

I'm really interested in how hands-on my course is it's very practical based, I spend

a lot of time with patients and seeing what the work I'm doing actually means

to people. Podiatry clinic is on-site, full set up similar to NHS. The orthotics

lab where we can manufacture and design orthotics custom-made to patients, we've

also got a a theatre we're we can perform nail surgery and gait lab as well where

we can assess how a patient walks and develop a care plan on that. We have

specific placements throughout the podiatry course and this is eye opening

into the real world of Podiatric that's really helped me decide what I want to

do in the future. It's a fantastic place to study. Lots of opportunities

available to support you throughout your journey. Its positive, rewarding,

and challenging.

Mentoring by Robert Boehm, PhD, University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Duration: 1:31.

(bright ding)

- In our project, we have quite a bit of

student kinds of activities

and these come in a variety of forms.

First of all, we have a very large number

of graduate students who are involved in the project

and they're going to be our leaders

in a lot of these topics in the years to come.

So some of them are working on the water part of it,

some of them are working on the environmental part,

and some of them are working on the solar part.

And I mention the solar part in my comments.

But we also have a number of undergraduate students

who are working too in various parts of this program

and we even have some students, I have some students

who are from international locations

who have come to work at our location here

just to be involved with us.

We have students who are fresh our of high school

who are wanting to get their feet wet,

sort of speak, with research

and are eagerly working on some projects that we have here.

So we have students of all forms, really,

who are working our projects

and I think that's one of the

real positive aspects of the project, is making

researchers more knowledgeable

to be handling a lot of the developments of the future.

Mentoring by Danielle Nobles-Lookingbill, PhD Student, University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Duration: 0:54.

(quiet tone)

- I really feel like the NSF EPSCoR project

in the way that it's designed, we have annual meetings.

We also have been encouraged, as graduate students,

to meet and get to know each other.

I feel like research is always moving forward.

But the way that we do that best, is by working together.

I think that's the most important thing

that the EPSCoR project brings, is those collaborations

with your peers, your colleagues, mentors.

It even brings you closer to the mentors and advisors

that also work on the project.

Mentoring by Thomas Harris, PhD, University of Nevada, Reno - Duration: 1:15.

- I've been a mentor many times with students,

it's very rewarding.

Two, this is about like twenty years after you do it,

you find out they're leaders in the state

or in their business, which has happened many times,

but it's also that it's very rewarding,

they keep you young.

They're very handy, and when I can give 'em my iPhone,

they make this work,

but the other things that they're very good

is that they're very inquisitive.

We've been very fortunate though and the

two people who have been working with me on this one

are very much interested in solar and clean energy.

In fact we had a clean energy,

a climate change seminar here

and one of the students, Angelou Susteen,

helped develop that.

And so that's information that's kinda interesting.

All of them have been very active and interested

in using this and hopefully they'll be gaining tools

that they can use if more solar

energy opportunities come for employment.

Law LLB(Hons) at the University of Huddersfield - Danny Rand - Duration: 0:58.

Huddersfield was my first choice so when I got offered the place I was over the

moon really. It's the range of skills offered by the course that tempted me to

do Law, It's intellectually stimulating. We have speaking workshops, we do mooting

which is basically like a mock trial. I've been on a work placement in

the local solicitors firm in Leeds, I've also had the chance to undergo

placements in a barristers chambers shadowing a barrister attending court

and really engage with the practical area of law. The support I've received

at Huddersfield and the challenges I've been faced with have helped me

develop both professionally and personally, and academically massively. Not only does

it give you the practical knowledge of the law and the understanding of the

profession, it also enhances your career prospects and the tutors help you

understand that you can achieve it. It's extremely rewarding.

Accountancy and Finance at the University of Huddersfield - Danielle Shelborn - Duration: 0:59.

I was always really good at maths in school so I decided to go into

Accounting and Finance. I went to the open day and I just found that Huddersfield

was like really friendly and I just felt like I fit in at Huddersfield.

Even though the stereotype of accountancy is boring our tutors are

really quite funny, so they do make things a lot more interesting and rather

than you're a student and they're the tutor they talk to you more of an equal

basis. In the business school we actually have a trading room. It's like a mini

Stock Exchange so you actually invest in companies and learn about how trading

and investment works. I did my placement at the NHS southeast Leeds CCG, I were

the finance assistant there for a year. It really opened up to like what I could do

after I've finished University. So I really enjoyed it, I found I've gained a lot from

doing that placement year. Definitely come to Huddersfield because it's fun,

friendly, and sociable.

Business with Supply Chain Management at the University of Huddersfield - Amy Johnson - Duration: 0:59.

I've always had an interesting business and then coming to uni I wanted to do

business but I wanted something a little bit different, so that's why I've specified

in the Supply Chain. It's part of the NOVUS scheme which was a big selling

point for me. Companies sponsor the course and you

have a lot of interaction with the companies through placement, site visits,

and guest lectures. You get a mentor as well which has been really helpful for

me. The facilities are great I've received

really good support, and the tutors are always very helpful. They don't spoon-feed

you but they are always there. My placement years felt like a big

achievement. I did it at Cummins in Huddersfield. You get to apply the

knowledge that you learn at University into a real life environment, and it felt

like I've developed my communication skills and my confidence. I would

recommend Huddersfield, it's your opportunity to take charge of your

learning and where you want to go and develop yourself. I would describe my

university experience as eye opening, challenging, and a positive one.

Events Management at the University of Huddersfield - Rory Capel - Duration: 1:01.

I saw the course look really good it also had a really good success rate in

terms of employment, all the other universities for me didn't keep up with

that so I decided then and there I'm going to Huddersfield. There's some really

interesting modules in there, like Experiential Marketing. Really

groundbreaking stuff that's quite modern in terms of what you learn.

We get a number of practical assignments. First year it's a big team one, finally

you get to final year where you have the option to basically run your own event for a real

client, so you do get that hands-on real experience. Placement year for me is

the best bit of the course, the amount you sort of learn and most of us have

come back and we know exactly what we want to be doing, or the area what we going into.

I ran the European Championships for a sport called Mounted Games. I have sort of

thousand people at the Bath and West Showground, and ran this massive event so for

me personally that's a fantastic achievement.

So I'm wanting to go into an events business of some kind,

there's also all sorts of graduate schemes as well that you can get into.

The support in all that in both finding yourself a job but also the option to

start your own company it's fantastic. It's been a really great course.

The course came up in Huddersfield and it was like the type of career path I

wanted to follow, so I just called to apply through clearing, gave them my

grades and they accepted me. Through all the modules medical pharmacology was a

very tough one, you have to study all of your pharmaceutical drug type for each

disease and then medical genetics it's just really interesting. All the images

that appear in papers you know how to identify them. The labs here are really

large, each person has an allocated space in their bench it's got pipettes and solutions you

need and machines to do wide variety of experiments. Tutors they are great they

help me with everything reply to emails as soon as I send them one. The single

biggest achievement for me has been getting my placement securing it because

It's in the top cloning company in the world, it made me really happy.

I just learned so many things at Huddersfield.oYu meet people from such a wide variety

of places, so yeah I would totally recommend it.
