Pro Ject Pre Box S2: MQA decoding Digital DAC/pre-amp - Duration: 9:55.

By popular demand this time a tiny DAC and pre-amp that is MQA enabled and only costs € 349.

That looks too good to be true.

But is it?

From the picture on the website I got the impression it is a 'half size' device,

as in the half of a 48 cm device.

But it's much smaller.

Nevertheless it's a very sturdy aluminium housing with a sheet metal internal chassis

and a black or silver anodised aluminium front.

It measures 103 by 103 by 36 millimetre.

On the front something that looks like a power led but probably is an infrared sensor since

it never lights up and is not mentioned in the manual, a 6.3 mm headphone jack that switches

off the line outs when a plug is inserted, two push buttons for input selection, a very

nice OLED display, a filter selector offering eight options and a menu button that works

together with the rotary encoder on the right.

In normal mode this encoder is used as volume knob.

Pressing it mutes the outputs.

On the rear a USB B socket to connect to a computer, a coaxial SPDIF input on RCA, an

optical input on TOSlink, A 5 voltDC socket in the shape of a microUSB socket and a pair

of RCA's for the stereo analogue output.

Let's start with the the four layered, gold plated PCB's that are designed to provide

extra shielding.

The XMOS 16 core processor not only handles the async USB input but also the MQA unfolding.

Pro-Ject claims to have filtered the USB input to the extreme and I suppose these coils take

part in that.

Behind that the power circuit for the digital part.

A vertical PCB provides shielding between the digital and the analogue part.

There is a separate power circuit for the clock oscillators, indeed there are two of

them, specified at 100 femtoseconds, one for 44.1 and one for 48 kHz based sampling frequencies.

The two ESS Sabre ESS9038 chips are situated very nicely close to the oscillators.

The analogue audio also has it's own power circuit using ULR conductive polymer/aluminium

solid capacitors.

The analogue audio part shows Wima polypropylene capacitors with in-between yet another low

noise voltage regulator and the ESS9602 output stage amplifier.

Overall the architecture and the components used suggests a higher price category.

Combine that with the well respected ESS Sabre DAC chip, femto clock crystals, triple power

supply and so on and you can only conclude that from a technical point of view the Pre

Box S2 Digital is a steal.

But does it sound good too?

Before I report on the listening experience, first some attention to the reconstruction

filters.

As said there are 8 filters to choose from.

I generally preferred the same that Pro-Ject advises to use, although some tracks sounded

better using another.

Now, I have been asked many times why I don't measure the equipment I review.

Well I do, but I just don't publish the measurements.

In this case all measurements were clearly better than can be expected at this price.

Noise is very low, linearity continues deep down and so on.

But when looking at the filters, something strange appeared, something I can't explain

- and I am sure there are people that can.

I usually look at filters using this signal: a single 10 kHz sine wave at 48 kHz sampling.

Due to the band limitations it will give some ripple before and after, as can be seen here.

Now, let's change the filter to the filter Pro-ject and myself prefer, the Optimal transient.

This doesn't look like anything I put in.

Now, the single sine wave is constructed in a DSP and could never occur in a digital stream

as such.

That might be the reason there is no correlation between what we see and what I heard.

And the filters I liked less, with the exception of of one, all looked better.

And since we're at it, let's show the other ones:

Fast Roll off (Linear phase)Slow Roll off (Linear phase)

Minimum Phase Fast Minimum Phase Slow

Linear Apodizing Hybrid Filter and

Brickwall Filter And for comparison all eight at the same time.

For those that wonder, yes I have checked two time the scope pictures all have the right

names.

Since I have no MQA encoded pulses, I couldn't check the MQA filtering Time for the practical

side of things.

Let start with the sampling rates.

Anything PCM up to 768 kHz, DSD up to DSD512 and all MQA is supported over the USB input.

The SPDIF and TOSlink inputs are 'limited' to 24 bit 192 kHz linear PCM.

So no mQA and no DSD.

When connected to the computer over USB, the computer will also power the Pre Box unless

you connect the supplied switching mode power supply.

Then the Pre Box automatically switches over.

I Couldn't resist trying a better power supply but considered an sBooster to be over

the top, so I used the iFi iPower and the Audiophonics 5 volts DC power supplies.

See my review of both, the link is in the show notes below this video in Youtube and

at the end of this video.

That brings me to the auditory evaluation: and I must stay I am impressed.

It sounded quite dynamic and had a rather clean mid range.

There was a slight harshness in the highs, something to expect in this price ranges (and

sometimes even higher) and also the lows offered tonality and resolution that is good for its

price.

The stereo image is somewhat wide and limited in depth.

Now these are absolute judgements, made on my setup 1.

In my setup 3 the quality of the Pre Box surpassed that of the other components and in my setup

2 it situated itself just under the Mojo.

And feature wise it outperformed the Mojo, of course since the Pre Box is aimed at stationary

use.

The Project Pre Box S2 Digital can be used as a DAC but also as a digital pre-amp.

Connect the computer to the USB input, the tv to the Toslink input and a set of active

speakers - or an amp with speakers - and you're set.

The simple infrared remote control lets you control everything: inputs, filters and volume.

At 349 Euros it is a steal.

Spend another 59 Euros on an iFi iPower power supply and the quality goes up even further.

Although it looks tiny it doesn't feel cheap, build quality both outside and in are more

than excellent.

Regular viewers know I'm not much of a headphone listener but the PreBox drives my AudioQuest

Nighthawks and Sony MDR-EX700's nicely.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: Developments in digital audio are rapid, I

have a 10 year old DAC that costed five times the price of the Pro-ject and comes nowhere

near sound wise and feature wise.

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION Q&A + SPEEDDRAWING • StudioSilvana - Duration: 8:30.

Hi guys, and welcome to a new video!

Today we're going to talk about digital illustration, and that's why I'm not in the picture

Because I'm going to show you how I make my illustrations when I'm working on my computer

I have gotten so much questions about this subject, so I thought it would be nice to

answer some of them while I'm making this illustration

This is an illustration of myself

I really wanted an illustration of myself to use for my social media

But I couldn't find the time to do it, so I thought I'd combine it with a video

As you can see, I already started

and with these questions I'm going to answer in this video I'm going to

explain what I'm doing

And if you have any questions, you can always ask me in the comments down below!

So, let's begin with the first question:

What brushes do you use and what are your favorites?

I made a folder of my favorite brushes for myself

as you can see in the video

You can see what brushes I specifically use and what they're called, but I'm going to talk about what brush packages I like most

and what brushes I purchased myself

Because I bought all of the brushes I use in this video

But; most of them are free to download at the moment

I'll tell you more about that later on

Most of my brushes are from Kyle T. Webster - A man who makes FANTASTIC brushes

Really, the best you can get, if you ask me -

I bought the Gouache Set from him

And that's because in my digital illustrations

I try to get that handmade effect

So I like a lot of texture, just so that it looks very handmade

And there's no particular reason, it's just because I really like how it looks

and it gives your work your own touch

And, Kyle T. Webster's brushes are free to download at the moment

Because his brushes are so good, Photoshop decided to buy them all

So he's collaborating with Photoshop right now and to celebrate that - I think that's the reason, at least -

you can download all of his brush packs for free!

So, if you have Photoshop and you're thinking 'Wow, the brushes Silvana is using are really amazing'

Because that's what they are, believe me

go ahead and download them, I put the link in the description

And yeah, have fun with them!

I also bought a brush pack called 'Space Ranger'?

I don't exactly know what the maker is called, but

but I'll also put a link in the description

And I bought these because again, they are very nicely textured

and they're great for creating rough edges!

As you can see, I don't work very neatly - I pretty much scribble around

And I really like the effect it creates

So those are my favorite brushes!

Again, if you want to know what brushes I use exactly - it's literally in the video

You can always search for them when you've downloaded the brushes

What are your favorite brushes? I'd really like to know, because

I'm always on the hunt!

So please let me know down below

Let's get on with question #2:

What kind of software do you use?

As you probably know by now, I use Photoshop (Latest version by the way)

And I've been using this for as long as I can remember

My dad had a version of Photoshop somewhere around 2005 I believe

And it was on my computer

So I started messing around with it

and since then, I never stopped using it!

So for as long as I can remember, I have used Photoshop

And I can imagine you're thinking 'I can never afford this, it's way too expensive'

(You could get it through other ways but I don't recommend it)

But yeah, that's what I use to make my illustrations and I like it the best

It looks really complicated to work with,

and it is, but I know for a fact that if

you follow some tutorials on the things you want to know

you'll learn it in no time, since the basics are really simple

And it's just really nice software to work with!

The next question is:

How do you create texture in your digital illustrations?

I just told you a bit about this,

I create all of my texture with my brushes

I make sure I use brushes that

are based on physical techniques like

my gouache brushes I use

But the brush pack also offers pencils, you name it; everything's there!

And yeah, I started trying everything out and that's how I selected a few of my favorites

And that's what I create my textures with

Another thing I like to do, is - like the background right now, it's dark green

pretty flat compared to the illustration, so what I like to do

(I use a brush for this but you can also Google some textures you like)

I pick a 'dusty brush' which creates a kind of vintage effect

I don't really know how to explain it but you can see it for yourself

It gives the illustration some depth, and again; texture, and I really like that!

It makes the illustration more interesting and it looks less flat, if you ask me

The next question is: What kind of drawing tablet do you use?

And I can tell you it's nothing fancy,

It's just a tablet from Wacom, mine is called 'BAMBOO'

And it's reaaally old, I think it's

- I can't really tell but I think it's around eight years old?

It's not the best of the best, but really, you can work anything

if you're up for it and really take the time to practice with it

I never had any issues using this tablet, it's fairly small but

I really like that, since it's super portable that way]

Well, like I said, it's nothing fancy - it comes with a pen, and that's it!

And lastly, this question:

What do you prefer and why?

Personally, I like illustrating digitally the most

and that's purely because there are so many options, you can correct your mistakes so much more quickly,

and you can experiment without having to start over again and again

And that may sound very cliché, but]

that's why I like it so much, really!

I also really like working traditionally, but

I tend to do that only to sketch, and test out materials

And sometimes I combine the two, that's also possible!

But my preference goes out to working digitally

Well guys, that was it for this week!

I hope you enjoyed watching me draw,

and if you have any questions you can leave them down below

Because I can absolutely do a part 2 of this, since I have so many questions left

So if you'd like that, please let me know

I hope to see you next week,

please subscribe if you'd like to

I put subtitles under all of my video's, for those who can't speak Dutch

so that you can watch them regardlessly :)

Hope to see you next week, byebye!
