Auto news on Youtube Mar 30 2018

Sup, you beautiful bastards. Hope you're having a fantastic Thursday,

welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show and let's just jump into and the first thing we're gonna talk about today one of

the more requested stories in the past day is seemingly becoming a classic story of someone rising in popularity and then

saying the N word. So lets talk about Ninja.

Tyler "Ninja" Blevins of course the now massively popular gamer, Twitch streamer, YouTube personality,

he is in the news because of this clip:

...Yeah, I'm supplyin' the wood like Elijah. In the cut, smokin' on indica..My n**** my....artmentalize ya.

They say, they say life is a bitch. And if that is the case then I'm finna surprise ya.

Whoo!

The best part of that clip is the guy on screen if you don't know who that is it's not Ninja

It is Nadeshot. Just his face when he hears it. Now, the context of the situation if you don't know is that

he was singing Logic's "44 More" but if you go through that song the n-word is actually never used

so it looks like maybe he was ad-libbing or he was trying to use a crutch word and stemming from the situation

of course we saw people that were angry, outraged, some just shocked or surprised.

very quickly the articles started popping up some of them even comparing what he did

to what PewDiePie did. PewDiePie, ok, Felix he he had his own controversy

But I would say that these are different situations

Felix while he said that it slipped out he it was in the context of him calling someone the word

Whereas with ninja it was him singing although still it wasn't actually a word in the song. And following this incident and the reaction

Blevins went to Twitter this morning to kind of clear the air

And as far as my opinion and reaction to this I would say, one,

As far as apologies go I think that really hits home and kind of explains the situation. Two, I do hope that we can acknowledge

That situations are different and context matters and that ninja was not aiming this at anyone

And it does seem to be somewhat of a slip-up, but also three

I am hyper aware that I'm not part of a group of people that has had a word

Held over them in such a way where I would be offended and because of that I want to pass the question off to you

What what are your thoughts around the situation? Harmless mistake while this specific song that he was trying to sing did not have the word

A lot of music does and so that can end up just kind of popping in or no, this is a problem

You're not happy. You're maybe you're glad ninja apologized or no. It's not enough

Whatever you're thinking, and why I'd love to know in the comments down below. Then we had a quick Russia update

We of course a right in the middle of the reaction and fallout from the Russian double agent who was poisoned on UK soil

internationally we've seen around 150 Russian diplomats expelled specifically in the United States sixty Russians

were given the boot and kind of as expected the news is coming down

That Russia is giving sixty US diplomats the boot. And additionally, they'll be closing the US consulate in

St. Petersburg and so of course this was kind of the expected reaction. It is a small update, but to a very very big

Situation that continues to escalate and then let's talk about rapper DMX in the news because he has been sentenced to one year in prison

For tax fraud and reportedly this happened because according to the IRS X did not give it to him. "It" specifically being

1.7. Million dollars in taxes, also if you didn't appreciate that last line. I don't care it was for me. ok, actually,

I'll explain it for those that don't understand DMX had a song in the past called

X Gon Give it To You with the line "X gon give it to you"

And so I switch it around for this to be about taxes

Also, if you're wondering why I've been explaining jokes yesterday and now today

I just watch Ricky Gervais's new comedy special and I realize that you can make an entire

Special and get paid 40 million dollars by Netflix by literally just explaining jokes you already said.

Trying to get a slice of that joke explanation money pie also since the story's already off the rails

I say one the comedy special was actually kind of funny, and I'm not completely shitting on Ricky Gervais

And two if you just want a shit ton of really really good comedy James Acaster

Just put out a four "episode" special. I don't even know what to call it

It's like for comedy specials stacked on top of each other as if they're episodes

And he's fantastic and amazing

And then I feel ashamed that I didn't know his name before this that said back to DMX

as far as why he couldn't "give it to ''em" according to prosecutors

He had been giving it to other people. Prosecutors are saying the DMX of weighted taxes by living a cash-only lifestyle

And he would deposit royalty checks that he received into other people's bank accounts

Also, reportedly DMX has 15 children by multiple women so that's that's that's yeah. It's a lot of monetary upkeep ultimately

That's where this story ends

I I literally picked it because I just I just wanted to say X didn't give it to him. Next.

And from that, I want to share some stuff

I love today, and today in awesome brought to you by movement specifically MVM t.com slash Philly D movin

If you don't know is a fantastic company made by two broke-ass college kids who wanted to wear stylish watches, but couldn't afford them

So they started their own watch company movement watches started

Just ninety five dollars, which is amazing cuz if you ever gone to a department store. It's like four hundred five hundred dollars

I've seen a lot of people the last week and a half saying Phil. Where'd you get your watch o movement also?

They've got free shipping free returns. You can get one of their watches

They also have sunglasses men and women's if you want to join the movement that is right

I set a pun go to MVMT.com/PHILLYD

Make sure you enter in code PHILLYD for $15 off your first purchase and the first bit of Awesome has me so

excited and just desperate for April 22nd to arrive because we got a trailer for Westworld. Its a little over three weeks away

Yes please.

Then we had Shawn Mendes on Hot Ones. Which actually two updates when I found out my episode of Hot Ones will be going

up next Thursday and also because I thought it'd be fun. I brought back a

conversation with the podcast an interview show that I like to do from time to time. Last time I posted one was a while ago

with Casey Neistat. Sean Evans will be on and that episodes gonna be going up on this channel on Sunday.

- Its annoying on like 10 different levels.

- Oh wow. I love that. There's there is something there

- I'd like to see it go 107 episodes Kevin if you're watching

- None of you guys fucking know me

- Yeah, nobody's in my pocket trust me nobody's fucking paying me

- Never mind. We're cutting this...

- I don't want to create a false expectation. No you gotta follow me like the wave. It's so strong-

So on Sunday if you are in the mood for a bonus video

I got you covered. Also the members of the DeFranco Elite, yes

I'll be releasing it early there, and if you want to see the full versions of everything I just shared,

the secret link of the day, anything at all. Links as always are in the description down below.

And then let's talk about this story involving Donald Trump and the Secretary of Veteran Affairs.

David J Shulkin was the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, but yesterday Donald Trump announced that he is being replaced

and he did this via Twitter tweeting

And we'll get to Ronnie in a second. So some things to know about Shulkin if you not familiar,

He was the last Obama era appointee in the White House administration

he was massively popular his position was approved by a

100 to 0 Senate vote and there are places just depicting him as that

But it is very important to point out that he has had his own scandals.

There have been reports for a while that there's been a lot of infighting at the VA

It was being reported to his own press correspondence core was openly hostile to him so much so that he actually began

Organizing and dealing with his own press correspondence on his own cell phone.

but there is Trump connected to that because the people involved in the infighting at the VA were political appointees put there by Trump and

also Shulkin was being investigated by the DA's Inspector General and that Inspector General releasing a

Scathing report last month on Shulkin's use of government funds to pay for a vacation to Europe if you didn't hear about this

Shulkin had a trip to Denmark and London, both places

He had legitimate VA related meetings set up

But according to the report a staffer changed the contents of the email from Denmark making it seem that his wife was invited to an

Important dinner so because of that he was able to secure

$4,000 in airfare for her as well as lodging and normal expenses the inspectors report also saying that during the trip over half of the

Time wasn't even spent doing VA things instead

They were sightseeing doing tourist

activities and to top it all off allegedly they accepted inappropriate gifts such as Wimbledon match tickets. Shulkin denied the

Allegations saying they were politically motivated saying as far as the tickets they were from a close personal friend who had extra tickets there was

No conflict of interest as far as the situation with his wife

He said he had no knowledge

Emails were ever altered to give the impression that he and his wife were invited to a dinner and in fact such a dinner did

Take place the investigator also agreed there was no evidence

He knew and he ended up paying for his wife's airfare and the portion of the trip anyway

And then on top of that there are also claims from the inspector general that the VA was being run poorly some of the examples

Provided there reportedly there were things like renting three in-home use hospital beds for

$875,000 but to just buy the bed would have cost only

$21,000. Understand there are a good number of people defending Shulkin people saying that he is being targeted for political reasons

But I do think that it is important to point out that this just didn't come out of nowhere

That said hours after his dismissal

Shokan had an op-ed in The New York Times in it he praises the work the VA has done

He talks about changes that happen to the VA since he's been there

Things like veteran trust of the VA jumping from 46% four years go to 70% now reducing unemployment

of Vets to just 3.5% and then he took aim and fired at the administration saying:

And as far as the man replacing Shulkan,

We have Ronnie Jackson. And as you've likely seen in headlines Ronnie Jackson is Donald Trump's doctor. Although that is a simplistic way to describe it,

Ronnie Jackson is the White House physician, and he's actually been there since 2006. He's a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy although

he's just been nominated for a promotion and as far as in the White House. He was brought on by George Bush

He was kept on and then promoted by Obama Donald Trump

Of course has kept him one of the last times we talked about Jackson was back in January

Talked to the press about Donald Trump's mental and physical health and Trump passed cognitive tests saying things like Donald Trump had incredible genes

Listing Donald Trump's weight is 239 pounds

Which just so happened to be one pound shy of obese while there was a lot of doubt and ridicule about that even members of

the Obama administration defended Jackson. Dan Pfeiffer tweeting:

Alyssa Mastromonaco tweeting:

That said even people saying that this is not a partisan pick do have concerns this seems to be

Mainly stemming from he does have experience

But it's mainly with military medical roles and not inside of the VA system VoteVets

Responding to this pic by saying "he has never managed an agency like the VA" and that "now is not the time for people who

need training wheels". And where I want to end this story is I want to pass this question off to you

Specifically if you are an active member of the military or you are a veteran

I know the show has a sizable audience with the Armed Forces

So I'd love to know your thoughts on this specific story the removal, the pick. How does it make you feel?

Why are you having those feelings?

I'd love to know. If you feel like, has there been progress over the past few years or no

It's a shit show, it needs to get better, things need to be run differently. Let me know in those comments.

And then let's talk about the situation around Howard University. Late Tuesday

An anonymously written article was posted on Medium alleging that howard university

officials stole nearly 1 million dollars in financial aid funds. Claiming this happened between

2013 and 2017. Saying that it involved at least four other senior financial aid administrators

Alleging that Howard University president Wayne Frederick has known about the misappropriation since at least May 2017

also at least seven senior level financial aid officials have either resigned or been removed and saying this is all happening while the office

Of financial aid is in debt for nine million dollars the article then goes on to make some very specific

allegations with screenshots of financial aid programs

and naming names, counting amounts. And according to this article the embezzlement

was first allegedly discovered by a student employee who they call "Chase". Saying he noticeed that the

office was dispersing refund checks nearing one hundred thousand dollars in a single aid year and the reason that stood out is federal law and

Financial aid policies limit the amount students can receive to the cost of attendance

and the yearly cost of the school the time was $43,501.

also one of the main people named in this piece is a guy by the name of

Tyrone Hankerson Jr. According to the piece between 2014 and 2017 he was repeatedly awarded a

$65,000 university need-based grant. These grants reportedly intended for low-income students

who are in desperate need of assistance in a danger of having their education disrupted

by their inability to pay and that grant usually only ranges between $2000 to

$5,500 a semester. And on top of this the piece alleges that Hankerson also received several other scholarships.

$22,863 for something called a mock trial scholarship. According to sources who have been involved with the mock trial including past leadership

They say that the team never awarded a scholarship of that amount ever. They wouldn't even have the budget to accommodate that amount.

All in all, the piece says that Tyrone Hankerson received $429,612

over four years. Now, following the article all these allegations on Tuesday the Howard University

Students Association released a brief response saying "We are aware of the allegations against the university leadership

And we are extremely

Disappointed in what has been presented thus far. We stand alongside our students and are looking for answers from admin regarding this issue."

The next morning tweeting:

It's been twelve hours and Counting we still haven't heard anything from university officials regarding the fraud allegations we need answers now

Also on Wednesday that original article was deleted, but we then got a response from Howard University

Specifically, Howard University president Wayne Frederick releasing a statement and some key highlights from that statement

One, it appears that he's been aware of a situation

since December 2016 saying "I was alerted in December 2016 that there may have been some

misappropriation of university provided financial aid funds." adding

"I immediately informed the board of trustees and together we moved swiftly to begin an internal investigation."

Also engaging an outside auditor who he says completed their

Investigation in May of 2017. And based off of what the president says in the statement it also appears that more money was misappropriated

...kind of. So we've talked about grants,

We've talked about scholarships,

But we didn't talk about remission. The president's statement saying "The investigation found that from 2007 to 2016

University grants were given to some university employees who also received tuition remission the audit revealed that the combination of university grants in tuition remission

Exceeded the total cost of attendance as a result some individuals received

inappropriate refunds." Tuition remission, if you do not know, is when you can enroll in a college for either lower or

No cost tuition.

So you get university employees getting their college paid for via remission

And then seemingly getting grants on top of that that they didn't need, to go to that school. The president says after they found out

About all of this they fire six employees. Adding, "We will refer this matter for criminal prosecution as appropriate." As far as the funds that

Were misappropriated the president said it was not federal funds

It was institutional funds also adding that since this incident the university has new policies new procedures in response to this post the Howard University

Student Association didn't seem too happy. Saying,

"We are frustrated to see the university statement being sent to the press and not address to students first

This clearly is a betrayal of our trust and should have been addressed to the Howard community months ago

I think we will be meeting with the admin later today to discuss the financial issues currently facing the university and it is our goal

To amplify your voices," That's the main whole situation

But then we have to talk about specifically Tyrone Hankerson. Tyrone was

everywhere yesterday some people angry and pissed off that he allegedly took money

That could have gone to people that really really needed it others

seemingly impressed with how he

Allegedly took so much money over an extended period of time. Posting photos like this one with the caption, "This man stole

$429,000 in financial aid at Howard y'all. Tyrone Hankerson a student-employee in the Financial Aid office. Set to graduate! & got caught

This the iconic photo we found on his facebook. Mink coat designer bag the FINESSE GOD TYRONE. I am DEAD"

Another saying "Y'all can't even spell embezzlement"

also this

Stylish candid which I'm actually a little bit impressed

It appears that he had the state of mind mid skip to still turn that wrist so you can see the watch

I don't want to hit on here. Is these have been widely shared photos although

Just we personally have not been able to verify that it is 100% him in those pictures

It appears that he's deleted his facebook

so I just kind of wanted to mention that note. Also I think it's important that we always try to share both sides of the story.

Hankerson's lawyer has released a statement to ABC some of the highlights,

So that's where we are right now

It'll be very interesting to see what specifics we get around the situation with Tyrone Hankerson

It's also going to be interesting to see how this affects

Howard University in general. Regarding tuition troubles are already in a weird place in 2017 there is an estimated 22 million dollars in uncollected

Tuition and as a result of that the university announced that to register for classes all students would have to have a zero balance

Or pay one-third of their outstanding bill and be enrolled in a payment plan

This is of course a move that would hit low-income students the hardest and that's of course why you're seeing so much outrage around this

Situation. It ends up looking like they're just punishing kids that don't have a lot of money meanwhile their own

House is a wreck, I also, and I didn't mention this earlier, Howard University the president's saying that this was not a specific

Response to the medium post which I personally

Want to call bullshit on because the timing just seems like too much of a coincidence

unless the person who brought the medium post knew the schedule for the

University knew that they were going to come out about this, but decide to post it first

I don't know, but I do want to pass a question off to you

What are your thoughts around this? Are you waiting for more information?

Are you furious? If so at who? I'd love no your thoughts here in those comments down below

It's actually where I'm going to ends at Asia

Clayton State University - Women's History Month [Emilie Spivey] - Duration: 1:08.

(SOFT PIANO PLAYS)

My mother had been teaching at Georgia State when Clayton was founded and

it was a junior college and they brought her here to start the music department and

she stayed for 20 years and built really a wonderful music department.

Her students were very successful, went off to Juilliard, Eastman, Peabody all the big conservatories.

And Emily watched my mother's work over the years

and they became very good friends. And toward the end of Emily's life she approached my mother

and said I have an idea. My mother thought oh maybe she'll give us a piano

and she said I want to give a concert hall. My mother was floored.

She was on the building committee here and Emily died before the building was up

and she made my mother promise she would stay until the building was up

before she retired.

So the building was built.

My mother played her last solo recital here

and she retired.

Veterans at Claremont Graduate University - Duration: 4:42.

- I was an E1 in the active Army as a property book officer.

- I was a Corporal in Bravo Battery

of the Second 111th Field Artillery.

- I was in the Judge Advocate General Corps.

I was an attorney.

- Well, I was a Petty Officer First Class

in the United States Navy.

- I was a Sergeant of Marines at Miramar base

in San Diego, California.

- Initially, I was in the organizational behavior program.

After a semester, a switched over to

health behavior research and evaluation.

- I just became really interested in

sort of being a disease chaser.

And then that's really what I do, I chase diseases.

And I collect data and I analyze the data

and then I write about the data on interesting diseases

that no one knows anything about.

- I actually decided when I was in Abu Ghraib

that I wanted to pursue political science.

Really, government.

I suspected that the Iraqi form of government

might not be fitting

and there were rule of law problems going on.

So I started getting more interested in government

while I was over there.

So that's why I decided to go to graduate school,

to study political science, to get, to go deeper.

- I have been teaching part time at a USD law school

and I really wanted to take it to the next step.

I wanted to be able to become a full time

faculty professor at some point.

And so CGU has the only program in southern California

where you can combine both political science

and public policy, US public policy,

in one school, in one PHD degree.

- What finally brought me to Claremont Graduate University

was that I was looking for a school

that I wouldn't get lost in.

I was looking for a school that I could

make personal connections with.

- It's a small research institution,

which is kind of what I was looking for.

- Because our classes are small

and our faculty-student ratio is very small

our students get to know their faculty very, very quickly.

- Most of my health behavior research courses

are six to 10 people at the most.

- Because the classes are almost all

structured as three-hour seminar types,

it's very easy to be a commuter student

because you can just put two classes

in one day, back to back.

So you can keep your full-time job,

you can keep your family responsibilities.

And because it's one, three-hour seminar,

you really get to focus.

- We have staff and administrators

and faculty members who are veterans themselves.

We have alumni who are also veterans from CGU

who work at some of these other institutions.

And so it's a lot broader of a network

than even as it seems.

CGU has the largest population of student veterans

currently of any of the colleges.

And then when you move into the alumni ranks,

the network just continues to build and build.

- It's like a giant brotherhood and sisterhood,

no matter where you go.

- I met veterans in the first semester

and I've been hanging out with them ever since.

- It's a really small community that supports each other,

regardless of where you come from or what you're studying.

So it's a, it's a small, happy place.

I'm an hour, hour and a half away

from anything I could possibly imagine doing.

I'm really active, I go hiking a lot, I'm always outside.

And it's really fun here.

- In southern California,

I don't even have to look at the weather.

I like to camp, I have a off-road motorcycle,

and they have trails all through the mountains.

Beautiful views, perfect weather all the time,

incredible beaches.

- We're not right in the thick of LA.

We're actually just on the edge,

between San Bernardino County and LA County.

And there are a number of military bases in the area,

such as 29 Palms and also in San Diego.

- So the GI bill provides tuition support.

And under the post-9-11 GI bill, additional housing,

for books, and expenses for school,

as well as a housing allowance.

CGU as a institution on a per-year basis

is more expensive than what the VA would normally pay out,

and so the Yellow Ribbon Program basically has,

is an agreement between CGU and the Veterans Administration

to pay, dollar-for-dollar, the difference that's left,

would normally be left to the veteran to pay,

to ensure that they get 100% tuition coverage

during their time here at CGU.

So that's a big benefit to the veteran.

Especially considering, you know, being able to leave

with a Master's or PHD with no student loan debt.

- CGU helped me define, really, what I was looking for.

I came in looking to just be a college educator.

Now I ended up starting my own business.

I teach night courses.

And it's through the mentorship that I got here

that I was able to find those kind of goals

and redefine what I really wanted out of life.

- CGU has a core belief system

that is similar to the Navy's.

It's not all about getting credit,

it's getting something done.

(upbeat music)

Strategic Brand Communication - University of Illinois Online - Duration: 34:35.

Hi everyone my name is Brooke bear I am the program coordinator of the MS

strategic brand communication online degree program welcome to our first

Facebook live session I just want to make sure that I cover a little bit

about our SBC program before I answer any questions so our program is 100%

online so you can take it anywhere in the world you can complete in 15 months

and its developed for working professionals so we do understand your

time constraints working at 40 plus work week plus having a family so we believe

that you will only need to dedicate 10 to 12 hours per week on our program so

that is our program we are uniquely partnered between the Department of

Business Administration in the Gies College of Business and the Sandage

department of advertising in the College of media here at the University of

Illinois so all of our professors who teach on campus actually also teach

online for our program and we have its it works out to be about half and half

so about six professors teach for the business side of our program and about

six professors teach courses for the other side advertising side of the

program I'd like to open it up to any questions does anybody have any

questions

Thank You Melissa so the application process is very similar to most other

programs besides filling out the actual application you upload your most current

resume plus your undergraduate transcripts and then you will provide a

statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation and sorry I'm blanking

just a little bit but so the application criteria is actually based on your work

and your undergraduate experience your undergraduate GPA your statement of

purpose your letters of recommendation plus if need be your English up to do

test and we base it on all of that so you know if one thing is lacking a

little bit but the rest are very high we will take that into consideration so for

instance if your undergraduate GPA is just a little bit lower than the 3.0

graduate college minimum requirement we will take that into consideration with

the rest of the application process and and you might possibly still be able to

get in quite possibly actually

does anybody by have anybody any other questions

absolutely is completely possible to balance your SBC degree program with a

40-plus work work life we are developed for professionals so we understand your

time constraints like I said previously we estimate that you'll dedicate about

10 to 12 hours per week on coursework everything is done online we do have one

synchronous session a week per class and those are usually Tuesday Wednesday

or Thursday evenings and they're usually an hour to an hour and a half long and

that's a great way to connect with your professor and connect with other

students so yeah hi Ellie so the class format is it's a cohort so it's a 15

month long program and each class begins after the the next one ends we do have

breaks scheduled so I think for the next cohort there are four week-long breaks

over Thanksgiving winter breaks spring break and then another week in July

so our two credit our courses we have to at the beginning of our program and two

at the end those are four weeks long and then our three credit courses are five

weeks long completely online and you go through everything with the the same

cohort does that answer your question Ellie

great thank you so our classes range we have about six business administrative

classes and six advertising classes that are meshed together to make up our

program and they range from consumer insights one into measurement data

analytics there's a multitude of and measurement and evaluation so there's

tons of marketing and advertising classes and mix along with our business

our regular business classes as well if you want more information on the

descriptions of the courses you can visit our website at sbc.llinois.edu/curriculum we are currently still accepting applications for the

fall 2018 cohort so I don't have a good estimate of what the number will be I

can tell you that our current cohort consists of 29 students we are

anticipating that we might have more for the next cohort but like I said we're

still accepting applications so we probably won't have a great estimate

until mid to late July hi Clinton so the benefit of the SBC degree is that we

combine contemporary business management courses along with a huge emphasis on

marketing advertising and branding courses as well so and there aren't many

SBC degrees or branding master's degrees right now in the country at all so the

benefit is that you will have a degree that stands out among percent for

instance MBA degrees are very prevalent right now so the SBC is very similar

although it focuses more on marketing advertising and branding but it stands

out to potential employers any other questions

any opportunities for intensive search seminars right now we don't have intense

those or seminars but we do offer webinars at least once per semester for

students to watch online and so the presenter will present their webinar and

then one of our academic leads dr. Dilip Chhajed and will sit down for a Q&A with

that participant to answer some questions that pertain to the degree

program and to our students so as of right now we actually went to Chicago

for a networking event one of the other academic leads and I dr. Jacqueline

Hitchon and we were able to meet with a handful of students that live in the

Chicagoland area so that was really exciting but other than that we don't

have any in-person meetings except for when we have our graduation ceremony in

October

great question Melissa our current students are from all over we actually

have a lot of students from the Midwest some in Illinois and the Chicagoland

area but others scattered throughout we have some in Nebraska Kansas we also

have a few on the west coast and we have between four and five on the East Coast

and then we actually have one living in Europe and one in Asia so really spread

out everywhere which shows that you can complete the program under percent

online and from absolutely anywhere in the world one question that I know

always comes up for us is that they ask whether we if they need to have do the

GRE or gmae for our program and you absolutely don't

we don't require those scores that's not part of our application packet so that's

one worry off your brains at least

absolutely Melissa if you're not ready yet to come

to a full degree program we do offer certificate programs where you can take

three courses you can either make your own or there are three setup courses

with three picked out courses that you can take to come and get your feet wet

or just to complete a certificate you can also take individual courses you can

actually if you decide that you want to take the full degree program after

taking those individual courses or the certificate you can combine up to 12

credit hours into the full degree program so you can roll those credits

over and join the full degree program there is an intent to enroll form on our

website that you need to fill out and submit your resume in order to be

evaluated to join a certificate program or take an individual course what kind

of support is available so if you're an online student and and you need support

I'm absolutely here for support for you I would be your first stop and if I'm

not able to help you I will reach out to the faculty or to our academic leads for

further help you're more than welcome to reach out to the academic leads as well

they but you can also reach out to the faculty too but I am your first stop I'm

happy to help in any way and I hopefully can answer your question but if not

there are other resources as well okay you've never done an online class but so

our format is not necessarily the same as other online courses because we're a

cohort format and so you'll take each course you don't take any courses you

only take one course at a time sorry so you only take one course at a time you

course starts after the last course ends our two credit courses are for weeks and

our three credit courses are five weeks and and our program is 15 months long we

do have four holiday breaks we call them holidays but it's there's a week for

Thanksgiving a week for a winter holiday a week for Spring Break and a week built

into July for our students to have a break from a pretty intensive schedule

Ellie we do have thank you for asking we do have pre-recorded videos

but you have plenty of interaction with other students there's a live

synchronous session each week where you can meet with the professor and other

students that of course is not mandatory because we know that you have a busy

schedule but they are recorded so you can view them the next day but many of

our courses have group projects so you will be interacting with students and

there will be different students in each of your projects for different classes

so you'll be able to interact with most of the students because it's vital to

learn from others and we think it's a great environment to do so

you're welcome Clinton Melissa thank you we do have group work we think that it's

super important for our our students to learn from each other as well as from

our professors so many of the courses do include group projects sorry and and

you're able to connect to students from all over with different perspectives

which is amazing you can connect with students other students through Skype

zoom email text social media pretty much any way you can and our students have

been very successful with group projects so it's

it's pretty easy to get them completed Bridget hi Bridget

so many of our courses like I just said do have final group projects either

individual or group and at the end of the full program we have a capstone

project that students will work on as well in groups just because it's so

important to learn from others and to work in teams because most of the real

world you are working in teams so we sorry I just saw can you give some

examples of what past students have done we are still in our first cohort so we

don't have examples of what past capstone projects have happened and our

capstone course is still in development so I don't have a clear picture of

exactly what will happen for that capstone project yet but I know that it

will be very interesting and from what I've heard it sounds extremely cool so

Clinton what are your current students like the most about the program I've

heard such great things from our students about how much they're learning

from the professor's and from the other students in the cohort they just have

really embraced this program and they love what they're learning I've heard a

few of our students are already looking into different career paths and and they

credit our program and helping them make those jumps to a new career so I think

those are probably the most important things that our our students like about

the program Thank You Melissa as a brand manager SBC will absolutely contribute

to your career we don't have statistics obviously

because we are still in our our first cohort but we estimate that through our

courses you will be able to learn and be able to

sorry um be able to advance in your current career or move into another

career especially in marketing advertising and branding Bridgette are

most of your students recent grads are folks who have been the workforce longer

we have a really great mix actually we have some students who are actually we

have one who's still in school as a fifth year redshirt so sorry she's she's

still on campus participating in sports we have some people who have just

graduated and we have some people who have twenty plus years of experience so

it's a great mix of individuals who bring tons of different perspectives to

the coursework discussions and group projects you guys are great thank you

for all these questions

how does SBC compare to other online programs like Coursera and imba so like

Coursera and imba they are completely online courses I think the major

difference between us and the imba is that we have many less students so you

get a more personal feel with your professors and your cohort of students

you also complete the degree program with that cohort so you build these

relationships with each other and you learn from each other as the program

advances which is really great in addition so the MBA program focuses

more on contemporary business management practices whereas we also focus on that

but we added an emphasis on marketing advertising and branding that a typical

MBA does not include so like I said before if you are out for an interview

and you're amongst a sea of MBAs your MS SBC we see degree will stand out clinton

is their career advisory programs available to help me find a job that

fits me we do have at the university of illinois a career services program that

can absolutely help you fix your resume work on interview questions and they

also have a job placement posting or job career posts the College of Business and

the College of media both also have job boards where you can look for current

jobs plus our faculty is amazing and they have great connections so there's a

possibility that they can also help you move forward in your career and Bridget

how large will the cohort be we're still accepting applications so we're not sure

how large the cohort will be our current cohort is 29 students we are

anticipating it's going to be around there if not just a little bit more

maybe up to about 40 but we won't know the exact number until probably mid-july

another question that I know that we get sometimes is whether a thesis is

required for our degree program and it is not which is another thing to who we

just have that capstone project for our SBC 5:12 which is the last course of

the program Oh

Thank You Melissa so we have a preferred application deadline of April 18th for

our fall 2018 cohort I anticipate though that we will be taking applications

probably into the beginning or middle of July Clinton yes this is a degree field

that's in demand mark in advertising is a huge degree field there's a huge

career field sorry and and our degree program will absolutely help students

navigate marketing and advertising and accelerate their career

I know many students ask about financial aid for our program our office of

financial aid of student financial aid here at the University of Illinois can

absolutely help answer any questions they can be reached at findaid.illinois.edu

or at 217 three three three zero one zero zero we also I just wrote

this down today there is a subsection of that financial aid office that works

directly with veterans and active military and if you have any questions

about how you can apply to our program and utilize those benefits you can

contact them at three three three nine two eight three sorry two one seven

three three three nine two eight three or at OSFA.veterans at Illinois.edu

so I just wanted to throw that out there because I know we get tons of questions

about financial aid and they are more than qualified to help you answer any of

those questions Clinton how do you apply we have an application button on our

website at SBC.Illinois.edu you can

start your application there or you can

go to choose.Illinois.edu/apply and that should take you to the

exact same area to apply for the program

Ellie unfortunately there isn't an option to see a sample course because

all of our courses are intellectual property and that would have to be

cleared by the professor and and it's just not something that we currently do

with the program sorry about that Melissa what's my favorite part of

working for SBC I love working with the students and I love working with

prospective students I just I was going to tell you guys this at the

beginning and I forgot because I'm very nervous but I am basically a program

coordinator here with the program and I take prospective students through the

application process through registration through orientation and help them

throughout the program as kind of a coordinator between the students and the

professors and the students within academically so I'm really here as an

advocate for you and I love working with you and I love

I'm a problem solver so I really enjoy that aspect of disposition and what do I

like most about the University of Illinois I just it's always been

interesting to me having been at a large University but to be honest I was

working in apartment management and my boss at the time introduced me to a

great guy who ended up being my husband and he worked at the University of

Illinois and kind of convinced me that it would be a great opportunity for me

to come work here and so here I am and I've enjoyed it ever since I'm gonna

celebrate my five year anniversary here the University next week actually hi

Mohammad how are you Thank You Clinton that's very sweet I appreciate that

I'm trying to think of other things that we get asked a lot we've talked about

financial aid and we've talked about the cohort things Melissa do our students

have the chance to use you as a resource during it absolutely I am here as a

resource for our students in the program most importantly but also for

perspectives to answer questions and to help them get through the application

process and orientation process so please utilize me I can also give you

the contact information for the academic leads of the program like I said earlier

if I can't answer a question they absolutely can since they help develop

the program so we all three of us together can definitely help yes

Bridgette graduation is in October so our program runs 15 months so we start

in the middle of August so our next cohort will start in the

middle of August 2018 and it will go into the middle of October 2019 we are

currently working on how to handle graduation because our students aren't

able to walk in the May celebration but we are working on having our own

graduation ceremony so that our students who want to participate in come and walk

and then having some sort of celebration after that to honor our graduates

you're welcome Melissa so the recommendation letters for our

application we prefer to come from professional they should be professional

recommendations that can be professors that can be supervisors previous

supervisors we prefer that not more than one be a colleague it should

from someone in a higher position than you but you can always ask and we can

and I can take it to our academic needs to see what we can do but yeah our

letters of recommendation should be all professional not really personal so

shouldn't ask friends or siblings parents that type of thing

how much would this the program costs great question Clinton so our program is

eight hundred and thirty one dollars per credit hour and a three hundred fifty

dollar program fee per semester so we are a thirty two credit hour degree and

plus three fifty times the four semesters comes to just under 28,000

it's actually twenty-seven thousand nine hundred ninety two dollars for the full

degree program bridges speaking of recommendations can I have all three

from my current place work absolutely you can have them from your current

place of work we do have applicants who like I said are coming straight from

undergraduate and also some people who have just been working in the same

company so absolutely they can all come from the same company as long as their

senior to you yes thank you that was a great question project

anybody else have any questions sure Melissa so our partnership between

business and media is just that is very unique there to our knowledge is not

another program that for strategic brand communication that has this partnership

between the College of Business and the College of media about half of the

professors are come from the Department of Business Administration and have come

from the department of advertising so it's a great blend and you get

perspectives from both sides both colleges extremely interesting and so

unique I think that it's one of the best parts about our program is just how you

can take both of these colleges and and mold it into one fantastic program

Bridgette do you think 10 to 15 hours per week is reasonable to manage yes

absolutely on our website and from what we usually

tell people we estimate that it will be 10 to 12 hours per week so I think that

if you allow that 10 to 15 you have yourself a little bit of a cushion so

and that includes all of the coursework and the readings and the lectures and

the live synchronous session so I think I think you're in the right ballpark

Clinton they're much interaction with the professors or are they just

pre-recorded lectures we actually have a live synchronous session each week so

you are able to connect with the professors there a lot of people utilize

that as kind of an office hour situation where you can ask questions about the

projects about the coursework and really get to know the professor and get to

know your other classmates as well of course you can reach out to your

professors anytime they from what I've seen all of the professor's so far are

very approachable and they are easy to get a

hold of and will respond to emails very quickly how long does it take to

complete the degree thanks Melissa it's a 15-month degree program and we do

run it in a cohort so all of our courses are only taught once per year so that's

why we do the cohort and so each each course will begin as the last one ends

and I think I've mentioned a couple times that we do have four breaks in

that 15 months program links one week for Thanksgiving in one for winter

holiday one for spring break and then there's another week in July scheduled

especially since we didn't have that scheduled this year we actually had it

in August and our current cohort of students mentioned that it'd be great

the ones that have kids to have that week in the middle of summer so that

they could spend that week or even go on a family vacation so we did move that to

accommodate families with children

sorry for this lul I'm trying to think of some questions we usually get but you

guys have really covered a lot of some of the most important questions that we

usually get oh you're welcome Bridget thank you so much for coming to my first

facebook live I'm glad that it's been helpful and please I'm just going to go

ahead and into the Facebook life now but I put my contact information in the

tagline of the Facebook live but don't hesitate to reach out to me I can be

reached at B as in boy LM Larry bear like the animal at Illinois die edu or a

two one seven three zero zero eight zero eight one you can reach out to me

anytime I usually respond to emails within 24 hours so I'm happy to help

with anything and if there's something that I don't know the answer I will find

out for you so thank you all for joining in and bearing with me for my first

Facebook live session I hope it's been helpful and I look forward to talking to

everybody very soon thank you bye guys

I'm in the medical assisting program, which is basically a two-year program

and I have to do one more semester out of high school to

be certified to actually work in a doctor's office. Once I get certified

I plan on going to Valencia for my basic education and then after that I plan on going to med school.

But University has definitely prepared me for this. I met so many great people, you know. I met Dr. Carcara

and Ms. Hanley, Ms. Stone. And you know they really helped me through this journey.

My mom, you know, she got diagnosed with cancer. And during that time

you know I was missing a lot of school because I had to take care of my mom. Thank God, I had some cool teachers.

Sophomore year things started kind of going downhill and eventually she got put in the hospice.

I was there with her for a couple of days, and so she finally passed away.

There was a point where I didn't have a you know home for a little while and...

There's a lot of days where I didn't even want to wake up.

I didn't want to go to school anymore.

But one thing my mom taught me was to be you know optimistic about you know life.

I try to handle everything with you know optimistic attitude with a joy like she did.

My uncle ended up taking me under his wing in Winter Springs. I would have to wake up at 5 in the morning

Just to come all the way out here to this school because wanted to go to University.

I promised my mom

That you know I was gonna make her proud and I was become a doctor. What I'm most excited about is

you know moving on to a new chapter in my life. Continuing to make my mom proud, making myself proud. If anybody's going through something

At the moment it may seem really hard to keep your head up...

But one day, like me, you'll be looking back at it. You'll be like dang, man

You know I went through that so easy. You know and everything you go through in life

just makes you stronger. Whoever it is that takes care of you, make them proud, you know.

And always love your parents no matter what because you never know.

Furman University VLOG || Episode 2 - Duration: 4:35.

Hey guys! I'm Marie.

I'm Mary Catherine!

And it's a beautiful day here at Furman.

We set up our ENOs, right by the Bell Tower obviously.

A nice little study break, a good incentive

Happy Friday!

Hey guys, I'm Sam Whiteout, I'm so excited to be on Furman's campus.

The NAACP chapter reached out to me and they said they wanted me to come

talk about allyship and civic engagement and I was so excited because

I think this is so important. We're seeing so many young people at colleges

and high schools across the country get involved with issues that they're

passionate about and I think that is really important. I think that's

something that should be championed and we should encourage that especially for

people who are getting involved in, you know, issues and passion points that are

not necessarily something they've always cared about, not necessarily something

they've always been born into. So I'm really excited to chat with the students.

It's at 7:00 p.m. it's CLP? Yes! CLP approved. So it's gonna be dope.

Again, thank you so much for having me. And shout out to the NAACP chapter.

Yes! Glad to have him.

(music)

"Hey, Noah! We heard you were supposed to be here

but I hope you're having a good time in Costa Rica and we miss you!!"

(cheers)

(music)

Hey guys! Welcome to FUSAB's egg hunt! This is an annual event that we put on

every year. We just having a major egg hunt that goes all over the Furman mall

and students find as many eggs as they can and we have strategically hidden

three golden eggs so let's see if we can find to those winners are.

3, 2, 1, GO!!!!

(music)

Kids just went nuts for eggs! Ran all over!

There's pretzels, there's food, a band- Mystical Pickle.

A locally sourced band. So much fun.

(music)

Did you get a golden egg?!

Yes!

Tell us about it, where did you find this golden egg?

I found it under the bench over there.

Did you know that if you get a golden egg you get a big ol' prize?

Yes, I do!

(music)

Hey guys! My name is Shania Gaspard. I am a junior Sociology - Spanish double major

from Chicago, Illinois and today is Furman Forward!

Furman Forward is an accepted students day where students who got accepted into Furman

comes in and gets to live the life of being a Paladin. So that means they'll be

taking classes, they'll also be meeting students also accepted into

Furman and just getting to know the campus a little more and learning about what

life is gonna be like here. It's a really fun day because, you know, you get to know

about Furman, you get to know about the people who are potentially in your

classes and just enjoy a beautiful day here in South Carolina!

(music)

Hi I'm Gianni Iona. I'm a sophomore here. I'm from Pennsylvania and right now we

we're at Furman Forward. Everyone around me,

they've all been accepted and we were doing currently some icebreaker

activities to get the morning started and we're doing an activity where they

had a sticker on their back of a celebrity and right now they're trying

to determine using yes-or-no questions who they are.

I was Miley Cyrus. I got this vibe that I was gonna be Miley Cyrus,

and then I guessed, and I was right. It was so weird!

What were you guys? Did you find out yet?

No!

No? You're still working on it?

Yeah

(ding)

What about over here? How we doin'?

Yes! Yeah he got it!

He got it? What were you?

Kim Kardashian.

You were Kim Kardashian?

I was Barack Obama.

Fantastic.

You're trying to get it?

Alright. Let's see it.

Okay.

(ding)

I don't know the name of the actress.

Okay.

(inaudible)

(ding)

Who were you?

George Washington.

Oh, you were George Washington! Good!

(music)

Hey! I'm Hannah Page Clayton and I am

Alpha Delta Pi's philanthropy chair and we're out here today hosting "Pie a Pi"

outside the library. We're raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

And what Ronald McDonald House is is they house families with sick children in the

hospitals near them and provide them with meals and a place to relax, so they're

not having to commute back and forth from the hospitals every day.

Portraits by Everett Raymond Kinstler | Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery | Arts Break | NPT - Duration: 3:03.

- He has a career spanning over 70 years,

and has grown to become America's foremost portrait artist.

Join us as we take a look at America Creative,

portraits by Everett Raymond Kinstler,

on this week's Arts Break.

- [Joseph] America Creative is a collection of portraits

by Everett Raymond Kinstler,

that focuses primarily on creative subjects.

We really divide the exhibition up into artists,

performers, writers, you know people

like Katherine Hepburn, Tom Wolfe, Christopher Plummer,

that were associated with the creative

aspects of American life.

(upbeat music)

- [Everett] Looking back, there's no question I had a flare

to relate to painting people.

I think that it is not my role to judge,

it is my role to chronicle.

And, I try as best I can, as honestly as I can,

to, A, get a good painting, and what I feel is something

characteristic to the individual.

- It's not just appearances.

I mean, you can hire an illustrator to do an appearance,

but it's more than that, I think a successful

portrait talks about an interiority, talks about self.

- [Everett] The one of Ronald Reagan,

was where I had decided,

that I wanted to try and present him out-of-doors.

I had very strong feelings about that.

I didn't do it with a desire to be different,

in fact, I wasn't even thinking about it.

But as it turned out it's the only portrait

of any President ever done in the White House,

painted out-of-doors.

And my impression of the President, was that he was

a man who spent a great deal of time out-of-doors,

and, there's a second story, the White House,

called the Truman Balcony, named after Harry Truman,

who built a balcony on the second story of the White House,

and that's where I posed President Reagan.

I wanted to say something about the Truman Balcony,

because President Reagan said to me, Harry Truman did a

wonderful service to the President of the United States,

he gave us a balcony, where we could go out on the second

floor and look out at the Jefferson Memorial, and so forth.

I thought, that's my setting.

(upbeat music)

It's all you've got as an artist, is your own intuits,

your own points of view, you put 50 artists in a room,

and you pose for them,

you're gonna get 51 different pictures.

(upbeat music)

- [Suzy] America Creative,

Portraits by Everett Raymond Kinstler

is on display at Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery,

through July 14th.

- [Announcer] This NPT Arts Break

is made possible by the generous support

of the Martha Rivers Ingram Advised Fund

of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

And, a grant from the

Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission.
