Here are four are four lessons from Stoicism on discipline.

Stoicism is an ancient Greco-Roman philosophy.

The ideal for the Stoic, as with the Buddhist, is to show complete equanimity in the face of adversity.

The four virtues of Stoicism are: Wisdom, Justice, Courage, Temperance and temperance is subdivided into:

self-control, discipline and modesty. I really do think that with discipline

everything else falls into place. So, here are some lessons I've taken away which

have helped me develop discipline in regards to my health and my general

productivity and quality of life. The first is to find wise people to emulate

Seneca wrote that: "without a ruler to do it against you can't make crooked straight."

We need to recognise the importance of having wise people in our

lives which we can look up to for inspiration.

These figures serve as models for ourselves to emulate.

Pick carefully and choose someone who is living a good life, has good morals and

is closer to the person who you wish to become.

Watch what they do.

Listen to what they say.

Learn from them and more importantly pay attention to what they don't do.

What is motivating their actions, their ambitions?

Why are the consequences they experience happening?

Ask yourself these questions constantly and don't choose just one person.

Choose many.

Changing your mindset into one ahead of your own will builds confidence

and trust in yourself to stay on track and be self disciplined.

Apply this knowledge actively in your life and you will be rewarded.

So the second is to review your day.

These are referred to as 'evening retrospection' or simply journalling.

Ask yourself: "What did I do well today, where was my discipline and...

my self-control tested... where did I do good, what did I do bad?...

...why did this occur?...how can I improve?"

One of the best ways to become more disciplined is to

scrutinise yourself, find your weak spot. Be brutally honest when you're doing

these writings. This will allow you to be more self

aware through every step of your day because you're trying to gather

information for this daily evening retrospection. Use the information

gathered from this self awareness to formulate an honest articulation of

constructive answers to the latter questions.

The moment you find something which derailed you from your pursuits, recognise them; more importantly

never regret them and most importantly never make the same mistakes moving forward.

Marcus Aurelius once said that: "If you are distressed by anything...

...external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it;

...and this you have the power to revoke at any moment."

Being distressed...

...being bothered by small things all the time is really bad for discipline obviously

because you get out of that mindset of being focused on your goals.

You have a goal, you're working and then thoughts and distress about something external

[meaning that's out of your control] just comes into your mind and bothers you.

The best thing you can do in the circumstance is apply Epictetus'

'Dichotomy of Control' - a central concept through all of Stoic philosophers and

that's simply to reinforce to yourself what can I control right now and what do I

have no absolute no control over. So do you have a problem in your life? No?...

Then don't worry. Do you have a problem in your life right now? Yes? Can you do something about it?

No? Then don't worry. Can you do something about it? Yes? Then don't worry.

You see regardless of the situation we can always have equanimity, we can always

be satisfied in the present moment, regardless of what's happening...

especially when it's something which is out of our control because there's

nothing we can do about it. Number four is...Every day is a new life.

So Seneca once said: "Begin at once to live and count each separate day as a separate life."

This has been a huge mantra for me. A bad day doesn't have to mean a bad week.

A bad event or day doesn't have to mean a bad life.

The point is the moment you wake up you have to remind yourself that today is a

new life. You're still the same person in flesh, but internally you can become

something completely different. All previous actions from previous days

are now out of your control and they serve you no good other than to drag you

down like an anchor. You have to release the anchor when you wake up and move

forward by opening your eyes and focusing on what's in front of you...

...which essentially is, living life. If you binged on your diet yesterday it doesn't mean

you've failed and now there's no point in continuing and so

you continue binging indefinitely.

As they say... "get back on the horse"

and continue moving forward despite what setbacks you've had.

Our Beauty Essentials For Traveling (Hair, Skin, Makeup, Self-care) - Duration: 10:08.

- Hey Naturally Curly world, it's me, Evelyn.

Welcome to my crib, which is definitely

not an AirBnB that we got, just for video purposes.

A bunch of the editors and I are going

to be sharing with your our favorite things,

our packing tips, what we're bringing with us,

on our trip to New York next week,

because we are headed there for Texture on the Runway.

We're gonna be sharing with you our tips,

our tricks, our favorite products,

that we like to take with us when we travel.

- Hey guys, we're getting ready to go

to Texture on the Runway.

It's our annual hair and fashion show

that we host in New York City,

and we've been working with six of our runway brands.

We have Shea Moisture, Cantu, Cream of Nature,

Carol's Daughter, Mielle Organics, and curl formers.

I'm packing up the ones that I wanna use

when I'm out in New York City.

When I'm traveling I try not to pack too much.

I like to take either travel size products,

or put them in little travel size containers.

So, I start off with labeling them,

because I don't wanna get confused, just in case.

So I'm taking the Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla,

sulfate free shampoo, and I just put a little

bit in here, I won't be using it all.

So, I just try and put a small amount.

So I do the same with my conditioner.

I'm gonna be taking the Black Vanilla Hydrating Conditioner.

So that's my shampoo and my conditioner,

and I do the same with my leave-in.

But thankfully I found a travel size

from Carol's Daughter, it is the Hair Milk

Nourishing Conditioner, Original Leave-In Moisturizer.

And, for my foam, I'm gonna be taking the Carol's Daughter

Hair Milk Nourishing Conditioning Styling Foam, just as is.

So this will go in my suitcase.

But this will be the only product I'm taking in my suitcase,

so I just eliminated a lot of space.

So I take all of these guys, put 'em

in my leftover Glossier bag and I just zip it up,

and that's it.

- When I travel, I have always gotta have my

face stuff with me, to just keep all this intact.

First thing I like to make sure I pack is my konjac.

I get them from Korea, so it's softly going

to scrub your face like a sponge.

Foxie Bomb's, this is her orange kaolin clay soap.

It's got citrus oils in it so you can't use it everyday.

On the days that you do use it, it's just going

to burn all the impurities away with that citric acid.

This is the Strawberry Food Therapy Skin Food Mask.

It's super scrubby. You can see the grit on it.

You can't smell how it smells like jam, but it does.

It makes you feel like you're at home, wherever you are.

Just...

(sniffs)

Second to last, I have my serums.

They're all Eva Hansen and you're supposed

to use them in three steps.

This is the Vitamin C.

This is the Hyaluronic Acid.

Last step is going to be the Retinol Serum.

And then the very last thing is going

to be my sun protection.

So this is my broad spectrum SPF 15.

The melanin does protect me but you still have

to get some sun protection on there.

So everything I got is not TSA approved.

I don't really care about checking my bags.

They can rifle through all my stuff.

I'm not really concerned.

I don't have anything valuable in there.

As long as it all goes in a zip-loc bag, it's fine.

You gotta have the skin to win.

- So first I'll be sharing my everyday make-up essentials.

Then also my glam essentials by Ardell.

They are our make-up sponsor for Texture on the Runway.

I'll be sharing about their lashes, their red lip,

and mascara that I'll be using.

My everyday essentials are foundation, concealer,

brow powder and bronzer.

So to add a little glam to my look it's important

that I find the perfect red lip.

So Ardell has sent me a few red lipsticks

that I'll be trying.

So let's see which one looks the best.

I really like Intense Lust. Really, really cute.

It's really sassy and fierce.

And this is so easy to apply

that you don't even need a liner,

because the stick helps you apply it a little bit easier.

Now I'm going to put on my lashes from Ardell.

My first tip for applying lashes is be sure

that you have some tweezers on hand and ready to go,

because that is the best way to apply them.

Since lash glue dries pretty fast, it's important

to take your lashes off of the plastic

and have them ready to go.

We'll start with my right eye

and we will apply the lash glue on the strip.

Be sure you don't apply too much, because Lord knows

you don't need glue everywhere.

So you are going to apply your falsies close

to your natural lash line and be sure

that you hold them there for at least 10 seconds

before you start trying to move them around.

Believe me, it won't work out good if you move it too early.

First I use the end of the tweezers to press it down.

So now that my lashes are applied, I like

to add a little bit of liner just to hide

that black strip and a little glue.

Now I'll add my mascara by Ardell.

What that does, it helps to blend

in your real lashes and your falsies.

Here's my final glam look.

I've added my lashes and lipstick by Ardell.

- OK, so -- going on a plane

to New York for Texture on the Runway.

So the tips I'm going to be giving you

in this video are for body care.

Not like your skin care, so that you glow or whatever,

it's so the rest of your body glows.

So, tip number one, do not rely on no raggedy hotel

wash cloth or AirBNB wash cloth.

You don't know where it's been.

Bring these exfoliator gloves.

You can get them at Tarjay, otherwise known

as Target, to peasants.

This is by EcoTools. You just put them on,

you rub the soap on, you rub your body with it.

You cleanse your body way better than a regular wash cloth,

and you get some exfoliation.

So I do bring lotion, sometimes.

So right now I have the shea moisture lotion

in my little travel size thing.

I've found that oil actually goes

a lot longer way than lotion does.

What I do is take my oil, you can see I finished it all.

This is the Bolden, 100% Natural Shea Oil

in the sweet vanilla scent.

I put it in an old container,

this used to be a Vitamin C serum.

I just put it in here, and what you do is

when you get out of the shower and you're a little bit wet,

you just put a drop

and you rub it in.

You see how that one drop is like spreading to my whole arm?

Yes! So it goes a lot further than a bunch of lotion.

So this next tip is a life hack.

You take an illuminating stick.

This is NYX Bright Idea Illuminating Stick.

And this is for the night time, right?

So Texture on the Runway is at night, it's

a hair and fashion show.

Everybody's going to be dressed to the nines.

So what you do is you take this, as you can see

it's like, it has like a... I'm going to swatch

it like a beauty guru.

It has like some sparkle to it.

So what you do is you add it to your collarbone,

the high points of your face.

You add it to your nose right here.

Add it to your shoulders.

You're just going to be like ultra-violet.

You are going to be glistening so hard and it'll be great.

- When I travel my top priority is to feel well rested

so that we're out there for Texture on the Runway,

we're going to be working all day, and all night,

when I get back to my hotel room, I want

to be able to sleep really restfully.

What I like to bring when I travel is

this pillow spray that has lavender.

It's called Lavender Mist.

(sprays and sniffs)

Ah, it's just the most soothing thing in the entire world.

I can spray it on myself or my pillow.

I also have an eye pillow that has lavender

and oatmeal in it, and it's so soothing.

You can either put it into a fridge and let it cool down

or you can put it in a microwave and let it warm up.

Either way, when I'm going to bed, if I can't sleep

I like to just put this over my eyes and it kinda like

it's very calming to have a little weight on your face.

I know that sounds weird.

The last thing that I bring with me is

these Law of Attraction Cards.

This is something that's part of my night time routine

when I'm at home.

Sometimes bringing things from your home routine

when you travel helps kind of keep you

a little bit grounded.

I use them as a writing prompt.

I'll usually pull one of those out, think about it

for a little bit and just start writing.

These are the things that I like to use.

A lot of these things have helped me in those

Everyone's Sleeping Except for Me kinds of moments.

That's my self care practice.

So, those are our tips.

I hope they were really helpful to you.
