So we're all familiar with the tools that we use to control light waves. A

great example of one is a magnifying glass - a lens like this. We also see those

lenses in eyeglasses like I'm wearing right here. And how those lenses work -

I'll sketch a shape of a lens here - many of us may remember from

high school physics how this lens works. When we think in terms of ray paths the

direction the light travels, and it's bent by the shape of the glass so that

on the other side, the light converges and creates a focus, or an

image, at this spot. From the perspective of how waves travel, there's an alternate

view of how lenses work. And what I'm sketching here are the individual peaks

and valleys. The wave fronts of the light waves that are traveling in this

direction and hitting the lens, and what happens is in the middle of the lens the

light is slowed down, while on the edges of the lens where the lens is thinner,

the light is slowed down less. And so what happens is the shape of the

wavefront as it emerges from the lens is now

curved - slowed down here or delayed, and least delayed here, and it creates a

converging wavefront that also creates a focus at this spot here. It's kind of the

opposite of what happens when you throw a rock in a pond, creating an expanding

wave. This is a converging wave to this image right here.

Conventional lenses work because of their specific shape. Remember that they

are curved in order that the incident light waves are slowed down in the

middle where the lens is thickest and slowed down the least at the edges where

the lens is thinnest. And that's what creates this converging wavefront and an

image. And the reason lenses are expensive and complicated is because

we're stuck with the material properties of glass, and the only way we can create

this spatially varying light propagation is with the shape of the lens.

And that lens shape has to be controlled very very precisely in

optical devices. But we could ask ourselves, what if we were no longer

stuck with material properties like glass that are fixed? If we had more

flexibility in the material properties, then we could imagine creating a lens

that has a much simpler shape, and we simply need different material

properties in the middle of the lens in order to slow down the light waves there

and allow the light waves to travel faster at the edges. And if we had the

ability to do that, we could create a lens that does exactly the same thing -

creates a converging wavefront and an image over here and yet has a much

simpler shape and actually could be much easier to manufacture. And the basic idea

of how can we control those light wave controlling material properties, that's

the basic idea of metamaterials. So what are the essential features of a wave? How

do we describe it? Well there are a couple of fundamental properties of waves.

One is the amplitude of the wave - how high it is from peak to valley, and

that's linked to how bright light is in a light wave or how loud sound is in a

sound wave. The more important feature for metamaterials is the wavelength,

which is the distance between one peak and the next peak. And that's tied to the

color of the light or the pitch of the sound wave. So how do we design

metamaterials? We start by looking at the wavelength we hope to control, and if the

wavelength is this size sketched here, then we need metamaterial structure that

is significantly smaller, or about the size I'm showing with my fingers. So we

then need to create an array or grid of metamaterial structures whose size is

that size or smaller. Now if we were creating something

with conventional materials like glass, we would be stuck with the same material

properties in each one of these squares. With metamaterials, we can put different

material properties in each one of those squares. That enables us to do things

like I sketched before - creating a flat lens where the wave travels slowly

through the middle of the structure and more quickly through the edges. But

what's really interesting with metamaterials is we can put anything at all

arbitrarily inside each one of these material building blocks. And when we do

something like that, we then have the ability to create wave

control that can take an input wave and not just create a converging wave on the

other side, but a completely arbitrarily complex wavefront. And that enables us to

do much more powerful wave processing with metamaterials.

Spalding University Athletic Fields Project - Duration: 4:02.

[music]

We are D-3 but these athletes still have the same passion and the same

competitiveness as any scholarship athlete you want to throw out there at them.

Spalding as a pay-as-you-go institution so if a student pays tuition I want that

money to go to education. We don't spend it on buying buildings or creating

playing fields, we've got to go out and raise that money and I'm and I'm proud

to do that.

It was about three years ago or so that Spalding University dared to

be bold - dared to dream that this seven and a half acres on the Ninth Street

corridor could become something other than a deserted, aging, concrete remnant

long abandoned. As you can see site preparation is well underway. Gone is the

old warehouse and the old smokestack that stood here for years. Again, long

abandoned. But it is now that we must continue the momentum - momentum that you

can help us create and achieve this great project.

Moving forward for the

University, I think the fields that we're trying to implement and develop are so so

important to our growth at the university and athletic program.

We're really proud of what we've been able to accomplish under Tori's leadership

because without her we would not be where we are today. We've got to get

these fields built. This is a true game- changer for Spalding University so

we've got to get this done and we've got to get people behind this. And I want to

thank all those that have been involved through the years that have helped us

get to this point.

You know one was just a great city I don't even think we

understand the impact this facility is gonna have on the city of Louisville and

the opportunities that it's gonna create for, not just for the university but

the greater Louisville community.

When we thought okay we're gonna put seven and a

half acres of green space along Ninth Street, people shuddered. And it's not - it

was not a pretty area that we we purchased; but if we could if we create

these fields and this greenery along Ninth Street, it'll change the

perception of that area and change the perception of Spalding and

our campus. But to meet the needs of the times that sort of rebranding our

neighborhood, changing the sense of downtown as a sort of urban, gritty

landscape into the landscape that has a mix of of green and environmentally

friendly spaces and the playing fields will just move us a little farther west.

For the many who have stepped forward individuals and organizations and

supported this project, thank you. But we must continue momentum, we need new folks

to step forward and help us create this tremendous project on the apron to

downtown.

This is a neighborhood where everyone comes together and we've

embraced that as part of our calling and the students we serve and so improving

the areas to the west improving the areas to the east but keeping that

unified center - a place where people have dignity and respect and can come and get

an education and make a difference in the broader community, that's what we're

about. And we need your help.

Tori is leading such a

tremendous institution. Let's get these fields built to put the

ice on the cake.

Please join me in supporting Spalding university's

athletic fields project, boy what a difference that will make in Louisville.

Support, support, support.

Adam Strange (Explained in a Minute) | COMIC BOOK UNIVERSITY - Duration: 2:24.

Hey, guys, Professor Bill of Comic Book University and I'm going to explain Adam Strange in about a minute.

Adam Strange's first appearance was in "Showcase #17" in November 1958 and he was created by Julius Schwartz and Murphy Anderson.

Adam Strange is an archaeologist who was on a dig in Peru when a strange beam of light whisked him to a planet called Rann.

Rann is a world that resides in the Alpha Centauri star system that was in the recovery process after a lengthy series of nuclear war.

During the ensuing healing process, a scientist named Sardath developed a "Zeta-beam" that the residents of whatever planet it was pointed at could trace the beam to its origin and deliver help.

What Sardath didn't calculate, though, was the way that the space radiation would alter the beam as, rather than just leave a beacon to be followed, it would actually transport its unintentional recipient instantly to Rann.

Adam Strange met Sardoth and sought to help Rann's populous using their own technology.

Unfortunately, the effects of the zeta-beam are also temporary, so Strange will be returned to Earth after an unspecified amount of time.

However, Sardath had fired the zeta-beam multiple time over the past four-and-a-half years it took for the ray that first hit Adam and he gave Adam the coordinates of every burst.

Now, every time Strange is returned to Earth, he waits out the time of the next zeta-beam and travels to that part of the world to catch a ride back to Rann

Strange employs an environmental suit that protects him from the rigors of space and from most conventional weaponry.

He wears a jet-pack that allows him to fly fast enough that he can attain escape velocity.

He employs "hard light" technology that can solidify into a variety of weaponry.

He also carries a ray gun for when negotiations become hostile.

Adam Strange had lost his eyes in combat and Sardath cloned new eyes for him which he altered to allow Strange to see into the entire electromagnetic spectrum.

The source DNA for these new eyes came from Stranges daughter, Aleea, who is also the grand-daughter of Sardath, as Strange married Sardath's daughter, Alanna.

Strange is a man of two worlds in every sense of the word and longs for the day that the zeta-beam can be calibrated to bring him to Rann permanently.

And that's Adam Strange, in about a minute.

BSc Learning Disabilities Nursing – Becky's story | University of East Anglia (UEA) - Duration: 3:01.

Hello, my name is Becky and I'm a third year Learning Disability Nursing student at UEA.

I used to work with children with complex needs for about five years which

is where I grew my love and passion for working with people with learning disabilities

and I needed a new challenge.

As a learning disability nurse we get to work with a huge amount of people,

we don't just work with the people with learning disabilities, we work with their

families, with carers, we work within a large team of health professionals so

we'll work with doctors, with other nurses, work within mental health services,

work with different therapies, so physiotherapists, occupational therapists...

- there's kind of no limit really to who we work with because we want to make sure the

care that we provide is the best and so we want to make sure

everybody who needs to be involved is involved.

Year, they've been some quite a few exciting moments in the past three years

but I was lucky enough to be nominated for three different awards...

two I've won - one I'm waiting to hear - so fingers crossed!

The most memorable moment was definitely my elective placement...

I did a four-week trip in Ghana. I worked with some incredible people, met some amazing friends

and I worked with children, I worked in an orphanage, I worked with adults with mental health...

and got to work with a wide range of different professionals.

My favorite moment whilst I was out there was working with a young lad who had

disabilities who was in one of the orphanages. He hadn't spoken for a year

and he hadn't left the orphanage for a year. I went and got him a wheelchair and

I took him to the beach and he walked along the beach with me and he said thank you.

When I finish UEA, I've already been offered three jobs which is exciting...

I'm still looking because I know there's lots of other opportunities out there

but I guess I'm just looking for something that keeps pushing me, keeps challenging me

every day and just develops my skills and knowledge in learning disabilities.

People should do learning disability nursing because it's one of the most incredible careers.

Every day is different, there's never a dull moment...

I have loved every single moment of it, even the challenging times and the difficult times

are always absolutely outweighed by the lovely moments and the rewarding times.

You get to meet some incredible people and work with some fantastic people

and I totally wouldn't change it for the world.

University of Memphis - Dr. Martin Luther King speech unveiled - Duration: 1:43.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was invited to speak at the General Synod of the United Church

of Christ on the Church's role in the Civil Rights movement.

He delivered the speech we are about to see at the Palmer House in Chicago on Tuesday,

July 6th, 1965.

The speech on exhibit is an original copy, complete with numerous handwritten notes by

the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.

It is not just the legacy of Dr. King, but it is the intersection of issues that continue

to challenge the United States and to understand that history, to understand that legacy, is

a part of understanding how to continue to move forward as a country.

In all of my father's activities, civically, education has always been important, and to

know that this speech will be viewed by grade school students, all the way up to college

students is something that I know he is very excited about.

Dr. King, as expected, spoke eloquently and forcefully about the state of race relations

in America.

He noted at the outset that the nation had made tremendous strides, technological and

scientific advancements, including medical science, but when we turn to the areas of

progress in race relations, Dr. King said, we face one of the most shameful chapters

of the American scene.

It is a great educational mission for the broader community and hopefully well beyond

the boundaries of Memphis, into this region and around the country.

The Harmon | Fisk University | Arts Break |NPT - Duration: 2:46.

- It features iconic works

by many leading African American and African artists

and is part of Fisk University gallery's

permanent collection.

Join us as we take a look at The Harmon

on this week's Arts Break.

(upbeat string music)

- What this show really celebrates is The Harmon Foundation.

What The Harmon Foundation did

it gave African American artists

an opportunity to show their work.

It was an award that was given out

for artistic or Negro achievement.

It was exhibition award,

but also a cash prize which was really important.

And so with that they collected work.

Starting about the 1920s.

It went on through the 30s.

And so the names that we hear now

they were supported and were able to make work

through this foundation.

(moderate jazzy music)

The foundation dissolved in 1967,

and we were one of the recipients

that received a portion of the collection.

Its collection as a whole includes

African American, African,

then African objects.

So it's a broad spectrum

of a collection.

You know, I learn something new about it everyday.

I'm thinking about this

beautiful, beautiful, beautiful,

Malvin Gray Johnson called Harmony

where the legs are bent, the arms are bent.

And it's three men.

You see all the rhythm of the instruments being played.

Then you go look at James A Porter

woman with a jug.

The piece actually won the Schomburg Portrait Award.

(moderate music)

But what's significant as a student, a Fisk alum,

as an artist,

I learned how to paint

flesh tones by looking at that painting.

I still teach students to look at the colors he's using,

how he's painting flesh tones.

When you're looking at somebody's face,

it's not just brown,

there's reds, there's blues, there's greens,

there's so many colors in one's palate

that gives you skin tone.

To have an opportunity to see these works on view

is a really big deal,

especially not just to see it on view

at any major institution,

but to see it on view at Fisk

and for it to be in our permanent collection.

That's why it's important that people should come see it.

Two, you have kind of the grandfathers

and the godfathers of African American art history here.

It's an amazing exhibition,

and we have an amazing collection.

And for our students and a community

to engage with these works and ask questions

and learn something new

that's where the joy is.
