What is the Education EDGE? The Education EDGE is you. Your donations to the edge

provide financial support beyond the district's budget through grants for

fine arts, athletics, and classroom mini grants. Education EDGE has really helped my

classroom by buying the kiln because the kiln isn't something you can just go out

and buy. It does cost thousands and thousands of dollars. The kiln also

helped with the experience; they got to see firsthand how it starts as a powder

turning into a liquid and then once we put it into the kiln, how it takes all of

the liquid out of it and created a cup or a plate. Education EDGE really helped

my middle school students get this experience because I don't think they

would have this opportunity in all schools and I really appreciate that

there's a program out there like this that can help them create an art piece

that will last them a lifetime. We have had issues with our scoreboards on our

sports fields where they were kind of dated and they were having trouble. And I

reached out to the education edge to help us with the funding to put a new

scoreboard out at our soccer field and football field out there. With the funds

used from education edge that allowed us to purchase a new scoreboard, place it

out there and now every time I turn the on switch it comes on and it has yet to

fail on us. It's been awesome; our kids are enjoying it, our coaches are enjoying

it, our fans are enjoying it. Because they actually know the score, how much time is

left in games. And it also can be used in areas like the PE department if they

want to run timers out there for PE and things like that. A scoreboard first of

all, they're not cheap. They're in the thousands of dollars just to purchase

one. And then also there's a cost to have them installed.

So the Education EDGE, with the funds that they gave us allowed us to actually

undertake that process and use them funds to be able to follow through and

put the school board out on the hook for our kids to use. I'm going to be getting

a set of Chromebooks for my classroom so I can start implementing Google

classroom. it's going to lend itself to really, I think another level of

collaboration that without the Chromebooks we're not really able to

accomplish right now and so my kids are gonna start collaborating on essays, on

editing essays in a way that they really weren't able to before, practice

submitting assignments electronically because really once they leave high

school, whether it's college or career they're gonna be expected to know how to

use technology. So we're just gonna start practicing some of those strategies so

that they can be better prepared for the future. Something that I have realized in

my few years of teaching is that when we provide students with the technology and

the resources to be successful they really reach another potential that

maybe they hadn't been able to in previous years. Education EDGE mini

grants funded ten projects during the 2018 calendar year. The EDGE supports

innovative and replicable mini grant projects that support the district's

multi tier system of supports initiative. In addition to those grants Koch

classroom mini grants funded six projects in 2018. Koch mini grants are

limited to science, technology, engineering and math, or business

entrepreneurship classroom projects that are aligned with the district's MTSS

initiative. Koch mini grants are funded by the Fred and Mary Koch foundation. The

Koch grant is gonna allow us to get our solar panels up on our roof as well as

finish up our aquaponics system. We want to be able to get our plants going a

little bit easier. Especially growing our starter plants before we transport them

into the beds. And so with an aquaponic system that's able to filter out any of

the waste from our fish that we plan to have in our pond- we're planning to have

tilapia and koi, we will be able to use the water that gets filtered through and

pulls all the nutrients from the fish waste. And that's just really good stuff

that helps the plants get started a lot easier. Just a lot of fun opportunities

to get to work with green energy and see how much energy it creates and being

able to use all the power that's going to generate. We'll be able to, you know

play a radio turn lights on in and there and stuff, so I think it'll be a lot of

fun. In my classroom we're using vex robotics controllers in

order to create student engagement. That way a kid can move their fingers on the

remote control and see the robot happen right away. It is crucial that we have

vex robotics controllers in order to compete at the state and local levels,

and even nationally. We can record ourselves and post it on YouTube with a

timer and be able to compete without even having to travel to another school.

Without a grant this could not happen here. We are limited on our funds and

they are used directly for certain projects. This grant is going to allow us

to compete at the local and state level with other schools in our community and

other schools outside of our community within and without USD 259. This is

the 14th year that the Education EDGE has helped Wichita Public Schools

students and classrooms. The EDGE has now distributed over 1.2 eight million

dollars for mini grants, fine arts, and athletics. Over 600 USD 259 employees and

retirees, as well as several community donors make one-time gifts or automatic

payroll donations last year, and 100% of the donations to the EDGE stay in the

Wichita Public Schools. Thank you for your support.

Thank you Education EDGE for supporting our school and getting this Kiln, we

really appreciate it. We do everything for the students. They

don't really see us write the grants. They don't understand how much time it

takes to make sure that everything is great for their classroom, but when they

show up in here we have a positive experience because we have the top of the line

materials because of the Koch and the Education EDGE grants.

Mr Binh, after we knew about your experiences and information. We know that you are so interested in the theory of cause, effect and giving

Now we will discuss more about this. Before you worked and became CEO in education.

Have you ever thought about giving (cause and effect)?

Or you start applying of giving after you worked in education

Before that I do the business and I have the concept is quite trouble

The market like the battlefield, do the business you must make profits, must fighting,

Even sometime, do the business you are having the high combat capacity

The concept of planting seeds, cause and effect has not formed yet.

Until I reached to Diamond Cutter then i understood where does the real cause

At that time, I knew that to be successful, i need to help other people sucessfully, I need to plant the seed then i will get the result after that.

An Interview with Jami Mathewson of Wiki Education - Duration: 3:27.

- Wikipedia's come a long way

in the 17 years that it's been around,

and there are studies showing

that it's as reliable as other encyclopedias.

So I think people are starting to realize,

the requirement to have articles be verifiable,

to include citations,

is the most valuable part of Wikipedia

and we wanna teach students that.

The New York Times doesn't cite their sources, right?

There are other publications that don't even allow readers

to dig in and see well, who says this?

What would their motivation be behind publishing this?

When was this published?

When is this research from?

Has there been newer research?

Those kinds of questions that we want students

to be thinking about in their critical thinking,

their information literacy.

And Wikipedia does provide that and requires it.

Wiki education really wants to provide

the Wikipedia know how and expertise

to our instructors, to our students,

we've built the Wiki education dashboard,

so this is essentially a learning management system

for instructors to build their curriculum

around the Wikipedia assignment,

to direct students towards training modules

about how to edit Wikipedia, how to participate

in this community, how to avoid copyright

and plagiarism issues.

We've had a partnership with

the Midwest Political Science Association

for the last three years, and we've worked with

71 courses through that partnership.

They've added over one and a half million words to Wikipedia

and we're in the busiest part of the term right now,

so we might hit two million this term.

So there's been a lot of acceptance,

the idea of if we're trying to reach the public,

and inform them about political science topics,

and research, Wikipedia's the place to do that.

Wikipedia has 500 million unique monthly visitors,

so that's a lot of reach, that's a really far reach,

and for students to be able to do that,

and to communicate science to the public in that way

as a part of their classroom assignment is really powerful.

I do think that within political science

there's this idea that we can affect change now,

and we need to do it soon.

There's always another election coming up,

there's always another opportunity to inform citizens

about topics related to issues that they're

going to be voting on, politicians, candidates.

People are talking a lot about fake news,

which as we know in the political science community

is not new, propaganda has been around forever.

I think people have better access to it

because we have that information in our pockets,

so it is crucial that we teach people to question

the information that's being shared with them.

Both the public, but definitely students,

because if they're going through the university,

and they're not graduating with that skillset

then we've missed this huge opportunity to kind of create

a better informed citizenry.

So I think it's really amazing to see

how many instructors are embracing this,

and they're embracing the Wikipedia assignment

because by turning students into knowledge creators

they're learning how to consume it.

They learn kind of how the sausage gets made,

and now they know how to question that

when they go and they use that information.

And of course a skillset is not something

that you only apply to Wikipedia, or to one source,

so they're taking that to the rest of the information

that they're getting from the internet.

Secretary of Education Betsy Devos' $40 million yacht set adrift on Lake Huron - Duration: 3:01.

A $40 million yacht belonging to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was untied from its mooring at a Lake Huron marina, police said

The SeaQuest, a 164-foot luxury yacht, registered under a Cayman Islands flag, was set adrift at the Huron Boat Basin, where it was docked

"Around sunrise the crew woke to find the boat had been untied from the dock and was adrift," according to a vandalism report filed Sunday by the Huron Police Department

The crew was able to regain control, but not before the ship struck the dock, suffering several scratches and scrapes, the report said

The captain estimated that the collision caused between $5,000-$10,000 in damages

Investigators hope that nearby surveillance cameras may help them identify the person who untied the yacht

The SeaQuest is one of a fleet of at least 10 boats owned by the DeVos family. The SeaQuest is staffed by a crew of twelve and, additionally, accommodates as many as twelve guests at a time

DeVos has previously been criticized for her family's wealth and holdings. She and her husband have a combined net worth of over $5 billion

Devos' brother, Erik Prince, is the founder of Blackwater, a private military company that has faced scrutiny for its activities as a mercenary subcontractor for U

S. combat operations in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. DeVos' press office did not respond to ABC News' request for comment
