Cardinal Close-ups

Cardinals taking pride in SVSU and the College of Health & Human Services.

SVSU really stuck out to me.

Well… because their culture and staff; their tradition as a football team; and then this

Human Performance Lab back here.

It's second to none.

One commercial I always see is LeBron James, he was doing a VO2 max test.

When I was on my school tour here, we saw the exact same machine he was on

and I was like 'oh, I want to do that.'

I really wanted to go to a school that has a great nursing program.

There's so many different options within the nursing field.

And it's just this profession in which we get to share these little glimpses of life

with people all the time.

And it's really an honor to be able to take care of people when they really need it.

I really want to be a performing arts physical therapist so like, working with a ballet company

would be really cool.

How many other colleges did you apply to?

None.

I just took my chances on SVSU.

What made SVSU stand out then?

Well, it was local, it had a good pre-physical therapy program.

I want to give back to the community in a way so I can help them to recover and rehabilitate

from an injury.

Why did you pick SVSU?

I picked SVSU because it felt like home.

The food, the housing, the teachers, the research opportunities, all of those things together

made me choose SVSU.

What makes SVSU's campus unique?

The moment I walked into our Health and Human Services building, I fell in love.

We have three top ICU rooms.

Walking into a fake scenario and looking at a patient and going, "So, we need to do

a neuro-assessment today."

What are all of the assessment tools that we as nurses have to look at this patient?

Our school does the very best to bring in real life situations.

What is your favorite Cardinal team to watch?

I'm going to be biased and say the football team

because I'm with them for my clinical site right now.

So, I'm on the sidelines celebrating when they celebrate.

I personally love our football games.

This whole school kind of comes together,

especially if you see it from the student section.

It's just so much pride for our school at one event at one time.

One of my favorite traditions is the car smash that we do during the Battle of the Valleys.

We get the sledge hammer and we're smashing the cars

just like we try to do to them when we play football.

What do you and your friends do for fun?

Explore coffee shops or to go out and watch local bands.

But I do those with different friends.

My coffee shop friends are not my rock concert friends, you've got to pick one.

Talk about your most meaningful internship experience.

I did one with the SVSU strength and conditioning program.

The head strength and conditioning coach, Chris Winter.; Learning from him was awesome

because I was just picking at his brain every day and he was teaching me so much.

Where in the world has your research taken you?

I just went to Houston this summer for the National Athletic Training Conference

and then I recently went to China for a conference there.

What was your hardest class at SVSU?

Anatomy and physiology.

You learn every part of the human body, every system, every bone, every muscle.

I was in my professor's office hours almost every week.

That was the toughest class but I got through it and it was worth it.

When do you feel most proud to be a Cardinal?

The little moments.

So, when people hold open the door for you, or say hi to you walking on the sidewalk.

Everyone's super friendly here and it makes me proud to be part of this big family.

Provide Quality Services to Folks in the Community and in Our State Hospitals - Duration: 0:50.

First of all, we would like to continue to provide quality services for folks

who are living in the community and those individuals who we are serving in

our hospitals. The services need to be grounded in wellness and recovery

principles so that everyone has the opportunity to live in the community of

their choosing in an integrated manner, just like all of us

have that chance every day of our lives. We also will continue to fight the

opioid epidemic by working with our state partners. We'll resolve to continue

to implement our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, to ensure

that people with behavioral health challenges, as well as physical

health challenges, are treated as a whole person.
