What is your favorite part of the holidays?

The spirit of giving,

the get-togethers with friends and family,

or perhaps it's the music?

These holiday episodes of Inside Education

are something many Inside Education viewers

look forward to every year,

and we're happy to showcase some

of the incredible talent found in our high schools,

middle schools and even elementary schools as well.

On that note, here's the choir from

It's kind of fun.

(Kristine Davis) I enjoy singing because it allows me

Edukacja jako religia postępu/Education as religion of progress[Subtitles ENG][Napisy PL] - Duration: 18:01.

Education as a religion of progress.

The movie presents the quotes from a person that had "eaten his teeth"(polish idiomatic expression of making a lot of significant effort in grinding thru something) on the subject of education. On the funny side of it - he does not have his teeth at the lecture, for other reasons ofcourse.

I am ashamed to say probably have consumed more books about education than

any sane human being in the world I've been reading them now for 13 years

at the rate of at least one a day and often many more when I have whiskey nearby

This man presents a tragi-comical dramatic image of the current state of the public education.

And it had become a religion of progress. What this religion is about I will explain at the end of the presentation. I will just make a list of characteristics of it.

It was designed about a hundred years ago it is not the timeless form

that that teacher college textbook say it is

1. Lies in the textbooks about the genesis of modern public education model - Deceit.

it was quite consciously designed about a hundred years ago and quite

consciously to prevent the development of independent thought

2. Conscious thwarthing of independant thought - Tyrany.

that sounds awfully creepy and it probably is awfully creepy but the

people who did this thought that they were obeying not god's will but

evolutions will

3. Schools have principles set according to the their evolutionists notion of self superiority bias

the short answer test with its fixation on disconnected bits of data can be

regarded as a training laboratory in which the ability to think in contexts

is surgically removed while at the same time certain useful habits like

concentration on sound bites and fact bites is installed if you think of a

divide-and-conquer principle which Julius Caesar perfected to prevent the

formation of alliances among the Gauls dangerous to himself short answer tests

and the habits that must be developed in reading and memorization to do well on

them are a way of dividing the mind from its innate ability to think in complex

wholes only men and women practiced in complex thinking which cannot be reduced

to bits of information can ever challenge the status quo successfully

and who would want employees like that if you can only think in fact bits like

a quiz show contestant if you can only think in fact bits you aren't likely to

cause any manager whether political or industrial to lose much sleep

4. Schools forces people to not judge the reality independently by making them unlearn the thinking skill in the wholeness of the matter - Alienation.

To understand that mechanism you must understand that human being very much dislikes the state of anomia - that means a state of confusion that is unable to labeled.

He would rather agree with the first label. Years of being soaked in the mechanism of anomy->whatever first label the better creates,

a sittuation in which the first label is being treated possitivly emotionaly, because it saves from the state of anomy.

And that creates a need in human to search the alienating experiance, that means seeking the authorities that allows the individual process of reasoning.

short answer tests effectively foreclose a student's need to read and think for

himself or herself he'd only read what he is told and think

of the answer that's going to be required what is being tested actually

his obedience and memory not the quality of mind

5. Schools are only interested in obedience and memory - Treating people instrumentally.

Plague of illiteracy comes from the plague of overschooling the people.

attention the history of modern American schooling is a history of deliberately

prolonged childishness imposed on young people for reasons that its architects

considered wholly benign it was intended to enhance the efficiency of the

national economy and of centralized social management schools we know it

institutional hierarchical divorced from experience divorced from responsibility

teaching low-grade irrelevance ease and even those taught in a fragmented

obsessively competitive way was constructed to serve very specific

purposes none remotely connected with what any

philosopher for the past twenty five hundred years anywhere on this planet

would have thought of as education

6. Speaking that the highschool certificate makes one adult and in the same time refusing to allow people to behave like an adult. Manipulation.

One changes the meaning of the words on the get go and call that progress.

the rest of the population utterly addicted to consumption and

instantly dissatisfied with what they purchased those of you who own a

computer know well what I'm talking about

it's urgently necessary that almost immediately upon your acquisition of a

computer or a car that you learn that you've made a hideous mistake but

there's a master chip out there and it's coming down the line and it's about to

obsolete your purchase

7. The effect of alienation is a feeling of short time span satisfaction. The real deep satisfaction comes from the inside and of God.

When one searches the satisfaction exteriorly, without God, he quickly becones obsesive, materialisticly driven consumer.

In order to hide that a concept of intravertics and extravertics was devised. I would call being extravertic being overschooled.

which comes out in the 60s this famous sociologist said the same thing he said

they spent ten years looking and school didn't make any difference at all

whether it was good or bad didn't make any difference I mean you're at liberty

to reserve judgment on that but but I took this piece of information from a

wonderful wonderful book called the credential Society by Randall Collins

that's Academic Press New York 1979 it's a historical study of education and

social stratification and Colin says basically it doesn't make any difference at all

8. Schools are not making what they claim they do in the eyes of the public. That makes them socially illegitimate.

That means that the prophesies of that religion of progress are false. In other words their fruit are false.

Paul the Apostle had said to not have any fruition with the the unfruitful deeds of darkness but to rather reprove them.

students and most parents tolerate schooling for one reason in spite of the

idealistic rhetoric they tolerated because of its promise of good jobs and

this is where the crisis is in coming it is upon us from the perspective of

schools clientele they are increasingly being made aware that this promise is

just a lie school is becoming an intolerable waste of time expensive in

both time and money because the credentials which school offers are

increasingly seen as illegitimate any of you sitting there who have a PhD degree

will know what I'm talking

Schools are seducing with the expectations they cannot fulfill to blameshift others for their failures.

There is a "Gospel" at the Cato Institute that's Joseph Schumpeter who's surely

one of the handful of an influential academics of the 20th century creative

destruction so I have read in the last month in the financial press investors

business daily The Wall Street Journal the Financial Times Forbes at all that

not to worry creative destruction is on its one yeah that sounds like a

religious notion to me which you take on faith nothing wrong with faith unless

unless you have basis there's going to be dinner on the table next week from

some miraculous source I was raised to believe god helps those

who help themselves

10. The "gospel of creative destruction. Do not worry the magical hand of the market knows what is doing. I would not be so sure about that.

And if it knows, why would that "magical hand of the market" needs the conferences how to make unwanted and poor people less willing to live of procreate.

And maybe, just maybe that hand "knows what it is doing" by destroying lives. That would mean that its pure evil.

our schooling is now on a collision course with destiny it was created to

release a numbed and dumbed mass on the world that includes executives as well

as factory workers who could be used as human resources which produces

magnificent efficiency in the executive ranks you can decide to spend people

here or there this way or that way or you can say sorry but creative

destruction has reached your your job

11. Schools are legitimising waste and suffering with religious-like terminology.

the famous economic thinker Adam Smith suggested at the beginning of his

best-known book The Wealth of Nations that all children have the ability to be

profound thinkers that book was published in 1776 and it's the Bible of

the Libertarians the Bible of the Conservatives in this country none of

whom I believed ever bothered to read the book

because if they did they would discover among other things that Smith says that

all kids have innate genius and the bell curve is deliberately created by the

opportunities over those kids he said the difference between a street sweeper

and a philosopher is only a matter of I'm quoting directly from wealth of

nations habit custom and education not one of genius and disposition all

children Smith continued share a talent for curiosity and wonder all are gifted

in conversation all are very much alike these are Smith's words up to the ages

of six seven and eight until some are deprived of fit subjects for thought and speculation

12. Ideology about the school betrays their own ideological forefathers about their opinion on the condition of man, especially A. Smith.

On the irony note here. He is the inventer of the term "hand of the market". that is deeply misused and misunderstood as well.

The last but not the least characteristic:

the most controversial thought I hope to leave behind with you is that the

cherished childhood that many of us sacrificed quite a bit to protect is a

curse on children it permanently disadvantages of them nothing on earth

such as adolescence ever existed until it was invented approximately in the

year nineteen six by an absolute lunatic who looked like a lunatic the founder of

Clark University the school for psychologists. Somehow or other I put his name

out of my head and if you know what it is don't don't remind me to be depresses

me so much adolescence was deliberately invented

School is legitimising the term adolescence invented in XX century. School teaches to be a kid when one is not.

Since i was still in college I had an argue with the professor about that same subject.

She argues that "having opportunity to behave irresponsibly" is something like the blessing.

But the question is. Since when you can stop being irresposible? There are people that does not feel responsible ever in their entire lives.

40-year old adolescence are making fools out of themselves just because they feel young. That is definatly a curse in my opinion.

I was not aware back then that the term adolescence is so young and that it was invented by a person that behaves and looks like a lunatic.

That makes sayings that suddenly by crossing the line of 18 year old one stops to be teenager even more absurdal and hard to swallow.

If one is growing a beard, pursposefully shape his body, sharps his sexual attractiveness to the limits, wears make-up and seductive clothings,

That person is not treating himself as being irresponsible. Im sorry to say that, but that activities that one is so hard trying for is hardwirely connected with responsibilities.

Maybe that subconciously, or even conciously trouble-making to stop being resposibly handicapped by having a problem.

If you still stubbornly reject that this religion of progress strongly resembles satanism, then paraphrasing the words of Joda from Star Wars series:

The power of this religion (school-jedi) is strong in you.
