at the beginning of time science like doom but
humankind has made the use of the result of a disclosure much has been lost due
to an annotating dream but the games are colossal
due to our vision and insight
welcome to science insight in this program we feature a brave new
initiative to combat genocide anywhere it appears in the world in engineering
we feature the engineering department of Cambridge University famous for its
innovative engineering solutions in nature are modified boat allows disabled
people to enjoy the pleasures of boating on Britain's Norfolk Broads in medical a
huge injection of funds to keep British scientists at the cutting edge of
excellence we profile restorations to the British Museum
a delicate facelift after years of environmental damage and neglect
in future britain prepares for the 2002 Commonwealth Games with this exciting
new sports facility in Manchester cure you in space an investigation into the
crash of Space Age airliner Concord and the miraculous survival of a tour guide
every year thousands of holidaymakers enjoy a leisurely cruise down Britain's
best-known inland waterway the Norfolk Broads for many people negotiating a
boat through beautiful scenery like this is an ideal way to spend a restful
vacation up until now it's an opportunity that disabled boat lovers
have been denied this launch complete with electric lifts remote control
joystick and onboard toilet changes all that king line cruises commission the
boat to supplement its existing facilities for the disabled
stephanie ash is chair of the advisory group that helped fund the fifty
thousand dollar boat now the disabled can participate rather than just look on
the 7-meter 11 seater launch is the first electric day boat for wheelchair
users on Norfolk Broads the weight of the batteries act as ballast making the
boat very solid in the water
Stephanie quickly came to grips with driving the boat as the controls are
similar to a powered wheelchair the cruise company says they're already
taking bookings from disabled people for 2002 Stephanie ash hopes that other
companies will realize that catering for the disabled is a great marketing
opportunity would for people like her and good for business the Airbus a340
300 and aeroplane of the future from European plane maker Airbus
Industrie drew keen interest from the crowds of the Fondren International Air
Show despite the gloom that's descended on the world of aviation with the
catastrophic Concorde crash outside Paris business continued almost as
normal at the famous airshow
this is the world's premier aerospace fair covering commercial and military
aviation suppliers of everything from aircraft landing gear to seat covers are
here and at the end of the week it opens its doors to the general public the
latest market survey showing air travel is poised to grow by five percent a year
for the next 20 years has meant a general feeling of optimism - this
year's show
rolls-royce engines being tested for Singapore Airlines the company votes its
massive Trent 900 engines will be chosen to power the world's biggest ever
airliner currently being developed in Europe Airbus hopes its a three double X
which could seat over 600 passengers will take over from where the Boeing 747
left off as the superjumbo of the future at Farnborough the company announced it
had secured 17 firm orders for the giant plane from both Air France and Emirates
in deals worth four billion dollars
Emirates the fast-growing dubai-based carrier agreed to take delivery of seven
of the Jets with options on another five
the chairman of Emirates Airlines believes the new capacity of the Airbus
will enable them to keep up with the future in terms of passenger and carrier
costs they expect to take delivery of the aircraft in the year 2006 nine other
airlines have expressed their general interest in the aircraft but six have
made formal expressions of interest 452 aircraft more Airlines are said to be
waiting with an interest in acquiring this new generation of passenger
aircraft the red arrows aerobatic team reminded all that fun part is about more
than business dealings it's a celebration of the skills the technology
and a sheer excitement of flight British Cabinet Office Minister mo Mowlam
and anti-drugs coordinator Keith lol inspector recent drugs for 16 million
dollars worth of heroin cocaine and ecstasy stopping the supply of hard
drugs like this coming into the country is one of the main plates of the UK's
anti-drug strategy as the government begins the second year of a ten-year
plan it announced an extra 15 hundred million dollars worth of funding over
the next three years for those fighting the war on drugs disrupting the
International drugs trade is a key aim
the government believes that if it can disrupt supply routes it will disrupt
suppliers and take away their money this in turn will stop the manufacturers
getting the chemicals they need to produce illicit drugs the anti drugs
campaigners are doing well and the results are very promising despite the
fact that the initiative has not been enforced for long
the UK has to expand the efforts it's already making to tackle the
International supply of drugs suspected drugs traffickers will face the seizure
of their passports at the UK as its way and one initiative already outlined by
Britain at the recent g8 meeting in Japan is the confiscation of dealers
illegally acquired assets the new allocation of funds announced today will
also be aimed at boosting drug prevention and rehabilitation programs
reducing demand for drugs among young people is the other key component of the
UK's anti-drug strategy the government is doubling the money it's putting into
prevention and education this means educating young people about the impact
of drugs and doing more with very young children to prevent them getting into
the drugs culture with children in the UK taking drugs at an ever younger age
the government's message today is that healthy stomach it's a constant battle
that still has a long way to go
after centuries of neglect and environmental damage the British
museum's entrance hall is returning to the Magnificent splendor of its original
conception in the 1830s thanks to a major restoration project the colorful
ceiling layout was in terrible disrepair with only fragmentary evidence of the
original a detailed watercolor painted in 1902 proved their helpful guide in a
year's research to recover the original work of British architect Leonard
Coleman an amazing 65 colors including 12 different shades of red have been
identified from the original and hand mix with modern paints to match a far
cry from recent decades where economic considerations deemed it more prudent to
over paint the entire decaying original with so-called modern colors gray white
buffs and creams the building also suffered considerable bomb damage during
the Blitz of World War two
the idea behind the original scheme reveals a cultural rivalry raging at the
time between England and Napoleon's France none of the work has been
stenciled it has all been painstakingly hand-painted by a team of over 15 sign
writers once the sealing is complete work will begin on the walls the whole
project shall be finished within a year
investigators sift through the wreckage at the Concorde crash site near Paris
where more than a hundred people died the inquiry into the cause of the
accident has begun the airliner which has been flown since the mid seventies
by British Airways and Air France is powered by four rolls-royce engines the
accident inquiry will try to find out why an engine on the crash plane caught
fire on takeoff
it has emerged that a half hour delay to takeoff of flight AF four five nine zero
was caused by mechanical work on the engine that erupted into flames and
brought the aircraft down repairs on the number two engine would replace the
reverse thrust mechanism but experts don't believe that could have caused the
crash the French authorities are examining the black boxes of the doomed
flight and are expected to make public their initial findings soon meanwhile a
British woman has spoken of her lucky escape from the hotel ASIMO engineers
reduced to burning rubble by the crash to a guide Alice Brooking was waiting
for a party of English tourists to arrive she was chatting to her sister in
London by phone when she realized something was wrong the whole place
started at remnant she raced for the door only to be met by a wall of flames
her only means of escape was the window after jumping out of the first-floor
window she escaped with only burns to the left hand meanwhile British Airways
engineers have been working all night in London and New York to enable a company
to resume its supersonic transatlantic services they've checked and rechecked
all aspects of the planes body and engines using sophisticated equipment
reserved usually for surgeons
with everything checked that should be checked British Airways is given the
go-ahead for their Concorde flights between London and New York to resume
but only the accident inquiry will determine whether Concorde will regain
its previous unparalleled reputation for safety the opening of Manchester's new
Aquatic Centre means the city swimming facilities are now world-class its 250
meter pools are ready two years ahead of schedule to stage the swimming events of
the next Commonwealth Games first to test the waters of the 50 million dollar
complex was Stephen Hill Peter Waterfield in James teal three of Great
Britain's top divers
but the first to put the pool to its faces were 16 youngsters from Manchester
Aquatic swimming club the government wants to stress the center is for both
Olympic athletes and ordinary swimmers alike next to follow the divers were
Olympic and Commonwealth medalists Adrian Morehouse Nick Gillingham and
Sarah Bailey who competed in a charity race
it's hoped that the center will inspire young people to get involved in the
sport and become Britain's medalists of the future the way the facility is
designed and managed means that whether you're a mum a dad a little toddler or
somebody who can't swim you can come here and enjoy yourself it
isn't just for Olympic athletes it's for the ordinary man and woman in the street
and their families a community facility that happens to be world-class according
to top swimmers the significant difference with the manchester facility
is that there's an elite tank and a playing 50 metre pool and directly
underneath another 50 metre pool the lower pool is only four lanes wide but
it means that top swimmers can warm up properly and cool down properly giving
them total freedom with their preparation there are many pools in
Britain and abroad that don't provide that facility Manchester's National
Cycling Centre is one of the existing venues hosting the Commonwealth Games
built for the city's Olympic bid it's part of the sport city complex which
will host the biggest multi-sport event ever to be held in the UK more than 5000
athletes will compete here in front of 1 million spectators with a billion people
watching on television around the world
the total cost of the construction and refurbishing work is 320 million dollars
a project Manchester hopes will be of lasting benefit to British athletes of
the future Oxford University since the Middle Ages it's been a world-class
scent of a scientific research for years though the UK scientific community has
complained of underfunding it says it's hard to attract and retain talented
researchers like these at Oxford's medical engineering unit and the top
academics are tempted by higher salaries abroad
now though the British government has announced a 10 million dollar aid
package to ensure Britain stays at the cutting edge of scientific research
experts of the Royal Society say the money aimed at topping up the salaries
of 50 top academics and research assistants is much needed
it says the government's white paper excellence and opportunity marks a step
forward for science in the UK British scientific institutions must be able to
attract the best people to the UK just as you have in football for any other
international competitive activity the proposals to give more money to people
studying for their PhDs at the beginning of their careers and to pay higher
salaries to the people at the very top of their careers are both important and
appropriate the government says those working in key frontier areas like the
human genome project are the stars of science and the extra money will make
sure that Britain stays in the premier league the chemistry department at
Warwick University is already involved in pioneering work replicating
biological chemicals thanks to the university's links with industry their
work could aid the production of anti-cancer drugs its collaboration like
this that the government also wants to encourage the great majority of top
scientists are keen to work out the uses of their knowledge and the consequences
they want to be able to follow up with practical applications whether it's for
cancer or for fuel efficiency or for new materials
the government says that in the future science will provide the key to creating
jobs better healthcare a cleaner environment and tackling crime it hopes
this massive injection of funds will ensure scientific excellence across the
UK it's a hundred and twenty five years since the Department of engineering was
established at Britain's Cambridge University it became the birthplace of
discoveries like the development of the jet engine and it continues its position
at the forefront of research today collaboration with industry has been
crucial it's been the tradition at Cambridge over the years to try to make
engineering relate to the real world and for that purpose it's essential to
collaborate with industry the university is fortunate in this area because
there's a great deal of new technology being used the millenium bridge for
example provides a tremendous opportunity for the Cambridge engineers
to work with industry but their work isn't just local it's also international
many of the world's leading firms collaborate with Cambridge engineers on
a whole range of projects and activities
on show at the celebratory exhibition is the famous stainless steel bicycle
designed by former student Alex Moulton introduced in 1962 it's small wheels
high pressure tires and full suspension represented the first radical advance in
bicycle design for 50 years Moulton's design complete with separable frame was
exported worldwide
more recently the department developed a mobile arm support to help people with
damaged muscle control as well as providing the necessary power for
lifting the device increases the sufferers muscle tone and joint
articulation more capital is needed to complete the necessary development work
currently the engineering department is focusing its collective brainpower on
studying the dynamics of human movement by extending its research to look at the
forces at work when people walk on a moving surface the department is helping
the designers of London's Millennium Bridge investigate their famous teething
problems the research is revealing information about the feedback between
human movement and the bridge as people walk the bridge moves a little and then
as people feel the bridge move they change the way they walk and although
they don't want to March instead they find that everybody is synchronized and
everybody is doing some slightly strange walk and the more they do it the more
the bridge moves and they get this biofeedback as Cambridge researchers
work on solving the problems of the millennium bridge the department may
make yet another engineering discovery to add to its already illustrious list
two British brothers known for their work in Holocaust education have
launched a new international body to focus on and prevent genocide throughout
the world Stephen and James Smith have set up the genocide prevention
initiative Aegis the Greek word for shield to research the causes of
genocide and give government's early warning of potential problem areas
remain through experience two generations ago
it will remain aegis has an advisory body of 23 entrants scholars around the
world who contribute to the research the founders say it will act when it sees
predictable early warning signals which could virgin into genocide the
indicators they'll be looking for are firstly when there is a vulnerable group
often a minority group that starts to become discriminated against by an
authority group they would be looking at legislation that discriminates against a
particular group the devaluation of civil values and then the threat of
actual death
Aegis believes enough recent examples of genocide teaches how to predict and
prevent it too often the international community acts only when the effects
impact elsewhere such as massive refugee movements the Smiths say the world
conveniently ignored the Rwandan genocide as another African tribal
conflict
the world dismissed what happened in Rwanda as a tribal conflict or civil war
because it was convenient in doing so they were drawing on the assumption well
they're black anyway and it's in Africa and it's bound to happen there because
of tribal conflict the British in particular who entered within that some
of those people who were carrying it out were trained in British universities and
in British military academies and were part of the world in which we all live
and yet they still carried out those heinous crimes we have to see it as our
problem wherever it is of potential genocide throughout the world will be
monitored by Aegis and an appropriate strategic response will be directed to
individual situations these may range from conflict resolution to stronger
policies to convinced perpetrators their behavior is unacceptable the new body
will now begin the task of raising its international profile it aims to become
a force to be reckoned with in affecting global responses to the value of human
life and the potential of that to be destroyed sometimes genocide whatever we
call it we have wasted live
