Sora Han_Internship Digital Story - Duration: 4:45.

Although it only lasted three months,

I felt like my internship lasted three years.

At the end of it all, I sat down for coffee with my director to reflect on my experience.

Walking into it, I still remembered the first day of my internship, the moment I opened the big gray door of U.S China Today.

U.S China Today is a publication of USC U.S. China Institute which publishes an online-magazine,

focusing on the multidimensional and evolving U.S. and Chinese relationship, as well as trends in contemporary China.

I was fearful about having an internship outside of my home country,

because I'm not native speaker of English. On top of that,

participating in an internship at a publication that will require a high level of reading and writing skills only further my fear.

When I opened the door of the office, no one in the office seemed to have any interst in me

My director, Rachel, gave me a brief presentation about the publication, and assigned me a seat in the corner of the office.

My first task was to perform daily updates.

I had to read five news articles and summarize it to convey the complex stories for readers in a succinct manner.

It took me forever to complete one article because

first, I was not confident in whether I was writing in the correct style, and

secondly, I had to read the text again and again to understand the main point

While I was working Rachel asked me several questions as well as if I had any questions,

but I couldn't reply properly because I was crippled by my lack of confidence.

Rachel gave me a cold glass and expressed her disappointment

towards me. From that day on, I had no joy on the way to the office, and only fear and worries were remained.

Luckily,

my first project did not require me to write a long article because it was to create an infographic

I

Collected data information to fill my topic and organize the data with Excel.

Since I'm a person who loves to do research and organize data, I worked on my project with joy.

I worked on my project with joy. When I was enjoying my work, I had more confidence in myself, and created a satisfying product.

It led my director to actively encourage me and compliment me during the project.

The second project was to publish a story in Q&A format.

For the project, a proficient level of listening, reading, and writing were required to raise the degree of completion.

I created 10~15 questions for a 30 minute interview with my interviewee.

Everything seemed to be going well, until I worked on the transcription, a process to create a script from the interview.

Despite the easy vocabulary used by my interviewee, I struggled from the very beginning of the process.

I

replayed the recording of the interview again and again. It took me 6 hours to complete my first draft and I nervously sent it to Rachel.

Despite my best effort, the feedback was cold, and even hurtful. This is the email I got from her

Hi Sora, This is Rachel. I checked your work and there were a considerable number of changes

I needed to make to the transcript.

I want you to work diligently. Many thanks! Best wishes, Rachel

On the next day at the meeting,

She asked me for the result my performance and asked if my poor work was caused by my difficulties in English.

My self-esteem dropped to the bottom, because I had to admit both the poor quality of my work, and my poor level of English.

My face turned red immediately

However, instead of being emotional and pouring out the words

I wanted to say, I apologized and promised her to revise the transcript as best as I could.

Instead of sitting and being depressed, I started to believe in my abilities.

I utilized all the resources that I could to improve my work.

After I submitted the finalized version of the script,

I breathed a huge sigh of relief. But it wasn't over.

She asked me if I could sit down for a coffee with her. An awkward atmosphere existed between us

, and she was the first one to break the ice. She told me that she was not intended to embarrass me, but to help me overcome

my limitation.

Through three months of internship, one important lesson I took out of it was to have confidence in myself

No one is perfect, and trial and error are inevitable. If one does not have confidence in oneself,

one would struggle and fall into despair when the trouble comes.

But, when one believes in oneself, one finds the strength to resolve the problem rationally,

professionally, and maturely. Thank you.
