So when the email dropped in from
Backpacker Magazine talking about how
they wanted to do their 2017 Gear Guide issue in Colombia,
I was over the moon.
I've lived here for four years and when
I first got here no one wanted to come to Colombia produce adventure travel
projects, much less the leading story in Backpacker Magazine.
We work with our partners at Pure Colombia to build an itinerary
that would really put the Backpacker team
and their gear to a legitimate test.
Finally we decided on the Páramo de Ocetá.
A páramo is a high Andean moore generally over 3,000 meters in elevation.
On any given day you can have mixed conditions.
Heavy rain, freezing cold temperatures,
hail--and by midday it can
warm up and you can have heavy sun.
The ground is always damp.
It was an amazing place to test the gear for Backpacker Magazine.
Also, it was super cool for the team at WhereNext
to spend a week in the field with Backpacker
and kind of get an inside look for how they put this issue together.
It's something they take totally seriously.
Every night they would really go at it.
They'd have especially heated debates over which gear would win the Editor's Choice awards.
I've tried a ton of shampoo before and nothing works as well as this.
I mean today I'm doing my stand-up under a waterfall.
My pants got wet. Soaking wet.
Yeah, wait I saw that waterfall.
No, no my pants were wet.
Are you calling that a waterfall though?
It was a drip.
No one wins easy with the Backpacker team.
And it was great to see that,
that this is a legitimate award that people actually think about.
They put the gear to an extreme test.
Come on everybody.
And it was just fun to be part of this entire process.
And to be the first production company to bring a major media brand
like Backpacker Magazine to Colombia for a project like this.
