Brianna Brochu Now Faces Hate Crime Charge, Is No Longer University

West Hartford Police Department Brianna Brochu in her mugshot. Brianna Brochu is now a former University of Hartford student and is facing a hate crime charge for harassing and intimidating her ex-roommate, Chennel "Jazzy" Rowe.

Brochu, 18, of Harwinton, Connecticut, admitted that she licked her roommate's "plate, fork and spoon, put tampon blood on (her) backpack, and mixed Rowe's lotions with other lotions also on Rowe's desk" out of "spite," according to court documents obtained by Heavy.

Brochu is white and Rowe is black. The case gained national attention Tuesday after Rowe posted a Facebook Live video documenting the treatment she received during her first weeks of college.

Brochu's name was trending worldwide on Twitter Wednesday morning as she made her first appearance at Hartford Community Court and learned the case would not be taken as lightly as it originally appeared.

In an Instagram post, Brochu wrote, "Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons (on) her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn't shine and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie.

Brochu, who was charged with second-degree breach of peace and third-degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors, faced Judge Tammy Geathers Wednesday morning at the community court, which is typically where minor cases are heard.

Cases there end with community service and eventually lead to the charges being dropped and expunged.

But the state prosecutor said her office has decided to move the case to Hartford Superior Court, the criminal court where more serious charges are heard, because of the "severity" of the allegations.

She is currently free on $1,000 bail. The judge barred Brochu from the University of Hartford campus and issued a no-contact order with the victim.

She told Brochu that if she contacts or tries to contact Rowe in person, by phone, on Facebook, on Instagram or elsewhere, she will be found in violation of the conditions of her release.

Brochu, who was flanked by her parents in front of the judge, responded, "Yes your honor." She did not say anything else during her brief hearing.

Brochu and her parents did not comment at the courthouse and she is not yet represented by an attorney.

Shortly after the hearing, West Hartford Police sent out a press release saying they are seeking to add an additional charge, second-degree intimidation based on bigotry or bias, a class D felony that carries a potential sentence of 1 to 5 years in prison.

The intimidation law states:.

A person is guilty of intimidation based on bigotry or bias in the second degree when such person maliciously, and with specific intent to intimidate or harass another person because of the actual or perceived race, religion, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression of such other person, does any of the following: (1) Causes physical contact with such other person, (2) damages, destroys or defaces any real or personal property of such other person, or (3) threatens, by word or act, to do an act described in subdivision (1) or (2) of this subsection, if there is reasonable cause to believe that an act described in subdivision (1) or (2) of this subsection will occur.

It was also announced Wednesday morning that Brochu is no longer a student at the University of Hartford. It is not clear if she was expelled or withdrew from the university.

"I am writing to provide further updates on the deeply disturbing situation involving our students. As of this morning, Brianna Brochu is no longer a student at the University of Hartford.

She will not be returning to the institution," University of Hartford President Greg Woodward said in a statement. Woodward added, "There has been an outpouring of concern for the victim of these acts from across the University and the country.

In my meeting with her yesterday, I reiterated my personal commitment to ensuring she has all available personal and academic resources the University can provide.

It is clear there is work to be done at our University to ensure that all students feel safe, respected, and valued. The conversations that began with student groups, faculty, and staff yesterday are going to continue and involve our full community.

I am dedicated to that mission and will continue to share additional information about opportunities for our path forward in meaningful dialogue and action.".

Also on Wednesday, court documents in the case against Brochu were released by the court. You can read the documents below or by going here:.

West Hartford Police Department spokesman Lieutenant Michael Perruccio said, "The department is in the process of reviewing the entire case to ensure the proper procedures were followed.

Online MBA Program at Santa Clara University - Duration: 25:14.

Hi everyone and welcome to this live Q&A on the Santa Clara new online MBA

program. We're gonna wait just a couple of minutes for people to join but what

we hope to do today as once we get started is to talk a little bit about

the online MBA program that launches in January. And give you some insight to the

differences between the online program and the on-the-ground program here at

Santa Clara. As well as answer any questions that folks out there might

have my name's Nydia McGregor I'm the faculty director for MBA programs here

at the Leavey School of Business. This is my partner in crime. Good morning or good

afternoon, evening. Hopefully we have a lot of people around the world. My name

is Toby McChesney. I'm the senior assistant dean of graduate programs here

at Santa Clara University School Leavey school of Business right so we're just gonna wait

for just a couple more seconds grab some coffee

Yep and please share this video link with anybody that you think might be

interested in the online program or the on-the-ground program for Santa Clara. Did

you have a good Halloween. I did how was yours? It was pretty good. It wasn't as eventful as sometimes

it is you have events at your house though I think. Yes so we ran out of candy

so we had about 400 trick or treaters and around 300. I screamed to my friends

go get more candy so we survived. But we had about 400

trick or treaters. Emergency candy run I'm sure that happens to people sometimes

Yes now I know for next year not to give out four Milk Duds at a time maybe slow it down a little

hold back oh yes yes But it was fun. I think I'm in a

candy haze right now oh so you actually ate all the candy it's not you gave it all away

I ate some so but we have our we have our coffee so

that's good so Cheers Santa Clara

tasty. Well I suppose we should get started. As I said earlier this is a live

Q&A about the new online MBA program at Santa Clara University at the Leavey

School of Business again my name is Nydia MacGregor I'm the faculty director

for MBA programs here and I'm gonna be talking today with my friend and

partner Toby McChesney what we wanted to do first is talk a little bit about what

the online MBA program is and then and in particular give us a contrast between

the online MBA program and the on-the-ground program. But first maybe

Toby you can tell us a little bit about the landscape out there for online

programs in general and then you can jump into our specifics. I think it's

important actually ironically today's my one year anniversary of being in Bronco

nation so I boarded a plane from Atlanta Georgia I was previously one-way ticket

landed a year ago today to join Leavey School of Business and we're really

excited me about joining Santa Clara I came from a very large research public

institution and wanted a smaller kind of vibe and so we have our graduate

programs we have 740 to be exact MBA and master science students so

we have three MBA programs here at Leavey and four master science programs

and so I was excited about that but I was also very interested in leading and

helping the school with online MBA program so I was at Georgia State

University for eight years and for whatever reason we just couldn't get an

online program going and I always was kind of jealous of my peers across the

country launching the online MBA program so when I heard that our Dean and the

faculty and trustees here at Santa Clara were really excited about our online MBA

I said definitely Santa Clara's for me so hit the ground running and we made

some some major tweaks and improvements to the evening MBA

program which we will we will talk about we've had some amazing wins here at Leavey

and it's been fun to help lead that so in my role. As Nydia knows but

for obviously our viewers so I oversee admissions, student services and

career services so what that means is I see the whole the whole timespan of our

graduate students again for all of our grad programs here at Leavey so the

online MBA will be our seventh program come January so when you apply not

if but when do you apply to our online MBA program just know that you'll see

Nydia and I quite a bit virtually but also you have a great support staff that

will also help you through your two year online program and we'll talk more about

the details of that but definitely online MBA is is one of the

up-and-coming programs and in the universities in kind of ecosystem we're

seeing employers really gravitate towards that as well and really

celebrate an MBA and online, on-campus, hybrid there's so many things out there

but now at Leavey you can do both which is exciting so so let me talk a little bit

about maybe the differences between the on the ground and the online or or the

places where they're similar and I would say at first they're more similar than

different in some ways and that's because the curriculum itself and the

content is the same across both programs Toby made an allusion to relaunching or

refreshing our program last year what we did is we really heighten the

relevance of the innovation and really the connection between best practices

with people in Silicon Valley and sort of bringing them to life here in the

classroom and to prepare students but also to make it highly relevant we often

hear from students that they'll learn something in the classroom one evening

and the next day they're able to apply it at work and it's not just exciting

but it really speaks to the value of the program for students and

lets them know that they're really able to change their career trajectory right

to make that inflection point after they're done with their MBA so in

that way the content being the same it means that those are very similar

programs from that perspective it's all about the scheduling though and the

interface that's a little bit different so in the online space what that means

is that the structure of every course is on a weekly basis meaning the modules

span over a week but each student gets to define for him or herself the

flexibility to decide when they're going to get all of that work done. As opposed

to showing up Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday which would

happen in the ground program and then the student then you know some

students like to take things at a measured pace you know a little bit of

time every day some students would rather you know hit the ground Friday

night and do most of their work for the entire week and with the online MBA

program you can make that sort of choice. I think that you mentioned there are

some students who prefer that kind of schedule there are so what happens

is what we've seen so we are for those who don't know we're about 45 minutes

from San Francisco at the heart of San Francisco without traffic keep that in mind

so what we see is if you live in San Francisco or Oakland or you live in

Portland Oregon wherever you live and you always want to

do an MBA program at Santa Clara given our brand and our rankings and you

should mention our great ranking so as I mentioned is Nydia mentioned the the

programs online and evening are identical obviously one is online one is

on campus same curriculum so we were ranked in March top 25 by US News &

World Report for part-time MBA so that same stature also is applied to our

online MBA program which which is exciting. But what we're seeing is with

traffic and families and consultants a lot of people in the Bay area Monday to Thursday you are you

know traveling to Boston for work how could you ever do an on-campus program

so that's why our online MBA program is very flexible for the working

professional or the person that just wants to kind of do at their own pace

it's really a nice combo pack so to speak so that's another

kind of exciting thing with our online and be a program building on that I

should mention that the professors that teach in the online MBA program are the

same professors that teach here and in the on-campus program and it is those

same professors that actually offer every course meaning they take a look at

the content that they have that they know that they want to cover and they

match it with a really dynamic and interactive environment online in some

ways the only using tools that you can only use online differently than you

might be able to use tools that are you can only use on the ground and so

that's another way that we ensure that the the program is innovative and that

it matches the same quality as our on-the-ground program. The other thing I

would say about it is that we have booked in the program with two

intensives so the first intensive takes place at the very beginning of the

program and covers most of the material for our leading people in teams course

and then the end intensive is a course that's called the challenges in course

which allows you to go deep dive and basically leverage everything that

you've learned across the two years of the program in that one intensive

weekend let's see and you're on campus so you can see us again live we'll shake

your hand we'd like to do a celebration toast at orientation so you also get an

orientation from our staff and we'll give you a tour of our campus and we

debate about doing that today but we've been structured on campus and they're

cutting grass we don't want to be too too loud but we do have a beautiful

campus if you're not familiar to Santa Clara or the Bay Area so when you come

to the two residency's we'll definitely obviously experience that you'll get to

go to the bookstore you can buy this fabulous mug this Santa Clara tie you

can see not sure if you can see it actually but it is a Santa Clara tie

and really see our facilities go to the library get your ID card so you are a

Santa Clara students you're just virtually online

majority of the time so coming that residency is really unique part and

definitely a lot of online programs do not have that touch feature with the

students which is which is really exciting I think that's right and it

helps people coalesce around what it means to be a Bronco right and what it

means to be a Santa Clara student. It also gives them the opportunity to get a

sense for campus and to know that if they're able to any networking events or

other kinds of events that we have ongoing throughout the year they're

welcome to do that and they would feel comfortable sort of sliding in

so I think lets jump to Silicon Valley so when I moved out here Silicon Valley

to me was great what is Silicon Valley what is still I didn't know I knew

Facebook and Google but until you live here or actually visit here it's

just it's for me at least so we really a purposeful given our location of course

to really bring Silicon Valley to our students and vice versa

so as Nydia mentioned we did retool our evening MBA program so we added in a

core analytics course so that all of our students have to take analytics same

with online MBA which is exciting yeah so Santa Clara's really hanging their

hat on the analytics space. We also designed a brand new course doing

business in Silicon Valley that you would take in the earlier quarters under

at the online M program and again we're bringing in speakers from various

companies: Google, Facebook, etc IBM pc's VCS there you go so there's a lot of

touch points with Silicon Valley that are really incorporated in and I

would say not just set the stage but are these bright threads that grow

throughout the program right so we have some of these core courses that

helped define those attributes but that is carried through so that other faculty

members use cases that are based in Silicon Valley there they talk about you

know it might be a finance class or a supply chain class but they're still

talking about innovation it's it's not just in you know a new product

innovation marketing class where you might get that. I think the other thing

that we that we have going on is that in particular differentiated for the online

program is our Silicon Valley professional

dashboard and this is what I would call an electronic portfolio and allows

students to monitor, curate and to really visualize what the plan is and the

personalized path they'd like to take. Both while they're here but also from a

career perspective so while that is you know innovative and it's really grounded

in the skills and values of Silicon Valley it's also something that we think

is a differentiator for the online program in general in comparison to any

program across the nation yeah definitely let's see I think that some

people might wonder though if you're in an online program how you would actually

connect with people right you're kind of distant we're not all here on a regular

basis and one of the things that we've done is we ensure that coursework and

includes group work so groups meet virtually of course you can meet with

your faculty member virtually as well in addition to any of the just interactive

features of the courses as you go through. The other thing is the program

is small that's true so you know we already have a relatively small program

here in the on-the-ground program but our cohort size is about 20- 22 people

for the online program so that means you're actually always working with sort

of that you know a tight cohort of people that have begun to get arrived at

the same time but also go through the program together and so that also brings

a lot of community connection and gives you a sense of home even if it's

virtually. Yeah so that's a good point Nydia so do your research obviously so

there are a lot of online MBA programs out there but to Nydia's point and given kind

of our Jesuit notion and it really having a small tight-knit community we

really are believing in that 20-22 cohort base but again do your research because

some online MBA programs are definitely not that small so you kind of lose that

control and that that kind of direct connection with with our amazing faculty

members and of course when you're on campus as well. Well it's also exciting

is Nydia has mentioned we do have a vibrant evening MBA program on campus so

if you live in the Bay area or you happen to just travel to the

Silicon Valley area and you want to stop by campus of course you can do so we have a

lot of different career workshops and different workshops on building your

network, resume review, LinkedIn and we do some fun social events. We do we some

wineries in the areas sure you know so we take our students to do wine events

you have to pay on your own of course but another kind of chance to

really get to know that MBA, MS students on a deeper level so that's all opening

to our online MBA students which is which is unique and exciting . I think

yeah I mean they're fully fleshed our students as well just like just like

anybody in the program. Let's see what else could we tell you I'm just trying to think

so you know I'm still in a candy phase I

apologize I wonder if there any questions that people have posed. So let

me just ask folks out there if you have any questions please be sure to post the

questions and we will address them as they come in. We're getting questions

right now let's see okay here's question is there a cost or

tuition difference for the online MBA? So they're the same so the cost for online

and evening MBA program is roughly around $75,000 total for the two-year

program that includes your tuition and fees does not include books or when you're

here on campus for the residency does not cover your airfare or a hotel

or whatnot but does cover the tuition and fees part of the program. Yes they

are identical yeah. This is another question how will online students feel

like a cohort? Okay so we talked a little bit about that so there's a closed a

small set of people who all start at the same time take their core courses

together and so there's a very cohort feel from from that perspective of

course you meet those folks in your intensive when you begin. So I would

think that that's that one of the biggest ways that you start to feel like

a cohort is is that you're you're all going to be in it together from the

beginning and you get that that initial connection with one another when you're here on-the-ground.

But so what's exciting too so yes your first few quarters you are cohosting in

your core classes but as you get to elective phase you'll start taking

electives summer I believe so when you start taking electives summer and

beyond the other online MBA students so we actually start which is probably a

question yeah we start the online MBA program every quarter so winters January

will be our first launch will start again in March then again in June where

on the quarter system and then again in September so every quarter were bringing

in 20-22 online MBA students so when you get to elective phase the other online

MBA tudents will pick and choose their electives too so you may be a

cohort of twenty for the core classes and then ten of you may decide to do

this marketing elective and ten from the spring cohort when you decided to do the

marking elective with you all so then that's another 20 so it's a nice

building block and it also you know obviously broadens your horizon and

network which is great yeah great question so far. What else is out

there. Let's see how will online students benefit from the Silicon Valley context

of the LSB? Maybe you could talk a little bit about that especially it relates to

maybe alumni. Sure so we are just about we will hit $100,000 alums from Santa Clara overall

so go Bronco nation yes and we are deeply rooted in Silicon Valley so we are known

as a Jesuit University in the heart of Silicon Valley. That's our tagline

and I really do see that so what's amazing to me where I sit and I

get only been for a year about the alums that are really reaching out to us to

want to help wanting to help our students they want to mentor students

open the doors is truly amazing and we've already talked to numerous alums

that are very excited about our online MBA program so definitely there's great

context out there from our alums and then through the Silicon Valley

dashboard and the Career Center down the road

definitely you will meet a lot of great faculty excuse me professionals in

Silicon Valley that will help you with with getting you a job in Silicon Valley

or elsewhere so that is definitely our theme Silicon Valley

Absolutely what do you believe the advantage of silicon event I'm sorry

SCU online MBA program is over other MBA programs. Okay well so I would first

obviously we have a deep connection with Silicon Valley. I don't think anybody

else can claim that other people can talk about innovation or

entrepreneurship or those kinds of things it's in the water here and we

made sure to incorporate it all the way throughout the program in a way that's

authentic and really well-rounded in what we know to be relevant for Silicon

Valley professionals. Yeah so I think I think do your research so there are a

lot of online and MBA programs out there so first of accreditation that is that is

definitely important so we are AACSB accredited we were one of the first

business schools in the state of California to be a AACSB accredited we

actually are some people don't know this some people the other school down the

street is. But we are the oldest and first established University in the

state of California that's correct 1851 so a few years back. So do your research

though because there are online MBA programs out there that may not be

accredited by AACSB and that is the gold standard of business school world and

ironically which is I think exciting our dean Karen Beck Dudley is a next chair

of AACSB be so if Karen's watching I bet she is. We're very proud to have our dean be

the chair of AACSB so definitely we're obviously accredited so I would

which speaks to the quality of the program to the quality of the curriculum the

faculty the students we bring in. Also what I would look into is again that

size so do you want to be in a smaller cohort like ours or do you want to be in a

big kind of group and maybe kind of loss of the sea so to speak so really ask when

you're applying to various programs what's your average class size and

really kind of you know really ask that question and also ask them how they're

connecting the online students with the on-campus students we've definitely

talked about that here but ask those questions because there may be a

disconnect so do your research that's right

certainly say not all online MBA programs are created equally

Especially because models tend to be where you get really large class sizes

within TAS that are dealing with its sections whereas we don't have any TA's at Santa Clara

right good questions so great. I'll take one more here at least.

What will be involved in the Silicon Valley professional dashboard what

classes or activities? So the Silicon Valley tprofessional dashboard is as I

said it's grounded in the skills and values that are needed here in Silicon

Valley for an innovative and vibrant career basically a career that will

prepare you not just for the pivot that's happening now but the multiple

pivots that will happen throughout your your lifetime so that's that's one piece

but what it means is as we've gone through and defined with those skills

and values are we've ensured that every class that you that you encounter names

and enhances each one of those and as you go through its data-driven so you

actually see how you're making progress I should go through the program on each

one of those skills and values that also means you know Toby comments about

electives at the end toward the end of the program that when you get there and

you're trying to make choices you can make really informed choices about

what's really best for you and again it's data driven so you can

see oh I've really got a lot of competencies and you know innovation and

communication skills but I need more competencies in data analytics okay

great. I'm gonna I'm gonna dive in there it also gives you a platform for taking

work that you've done or taking activities and achievements that you've

done and sending them up to a mentor to get feedback from that mentor to help

you then further define and refine what your program path is going to be we're

we're really excited about it a new dashboard it's great like you know I'm

sorry that they don't have a screen here but I would soon we would be able to

show you actually what what it looks like and how it really encapsulates in

some ways the idea of fun and Data-driven and a little gamification for

your process and your program as you go through them and again that's a very

unique thing. So I see other question out of the corner of my eye that's a great question

start dates and so we are launching our program in January so the deadline to

apply for the winter cohort is December 8th and we do require obviously an

application we require , two letters of recommendations, an interview so the

interview would be either with myself or Tao Sanford our director of admissions

or Manda Bream who is our assistant director of the online MBA space. We

really like that interview because that's a chance for us over zoom if you

don't live in the Bay Area that's fine but to really kind of here why Santa

Clara and why our online MBA program and why you'd be good fit

for the program we look at your undergrad transcripts of course your

resume and we do require three years of work experience we do really focus in on

that because it gave me what are professionals to have deeper

conversations about their jobs and we do require either the GMAT or GRE with a

case-by-case consideration for a waiver you would contact admissions for those

kind of nuances so great questions you know most of the requirements sound

standard but as we sit and evaluate somebody we're really evaluating them

whole person right it's the whole person it's about who you are as an

individual and the kind of engagement you have with your community and why you

think this program would be a good fit let's see. Oh last question that's

question it let's see oh I missed your information about class sizes for online

as well as the on the ground could you repeat? Sure so I'll take the online

so our class sizes online our twenty person people excuse me twenty people

per class that's the cohort size for starting with

and as you go through your core courses that's what you would experience um it's

a little different from the on the ground program so on campus we bring in

we believe 420 total evening MBA students and we bring in roughly about a

hundred every fall and forty in the spring so 148 each year and when you

experience a course in on the ground club on average the number of students

per class 35 to 40 now tend to be the average at the core classes and

electives it kind of hands on the students what they're

trying to do but still is a small class size just like the online MBA again we feel

very strongly at having a direct connection with your faculty members

which is great so if we could leave you with anything what we'd like to say is

online MBA starts in January admissions is December 8th is the deadline for that

we have some information for you if you need more specifics so if you don't remember

all those dates that we just said you can email online MBA at SCU. edu for

questions let's see November 15th is the info session that's at 6 p.m. that's

right or there's a webinar coming up as well

where you can you know review some of this information but also maybe have

some time to think about specific questions you have and you could post

them at the webinar and that's November 21st at 6 p.m. It has been a pleasure. Thank you all

We hope to see your application soon yes take care And go Broncos!

and so they work on real-world projects

as part of their education.

- When you come to Stout,

you want to learn by doing.

(piano music)

The Career Services Office

at the University of Wisconsin-Stout

is committed to the career

and professional development of our students.

What we try to do is find every avenue possible

to connect students and employers

and to facilitate networking opportunities,

skill-building opportunities,

applied learning opportunities,

and employment.

Our entire approach to learning is career-focused.

(piano music)

- As part of the polytechnic mission

at UW-Stout,

we blend theory with practice in all our classes.

You are going to work on real-life projects

in the classrooms,

take the students either to a company

or bring the company to the class,

and then the company will give them a challenge,

and we look at, okay,

what can we do with this client?

They worked with a golf course in the Dunn County area.

They also worked with local retailers here

where they helped them redesign their marketing

or even reposition themselves with new products.

If you're working on developing a new product,

you're gonna have to test it,

so we have the Fab Lab,

where students can actually do a first prototype,

test that prototype.

- We are a unique university.

We have more laboratory space than we have lecture space

so that they're learning real-world skills

so that they can go out and get jobs

and hit the ground running.

(piano music)

- The Discovery Center serves

as the central connecting point on our campus

between the faculty, students, and staff

and connecting them with business and industry.

Since 1994,

the Discovery Center has engaged in

and facilitated more than 500 collaborative applied projects

with faculty, staff, and students,

and through this they have provided technology transfer also

for over 1000 companies.

These activities have helped create or retain over 5000 jobs

and report over $650 million

in increased sales, cost savings,

or investments in their businesses.

- When you come to Stout,

you get a group of people who are committed to your success.

- We help students become a lot more

than what they thought they could be.

- A community of students and faculty

that are so close and hardworking.

- I feel like the luckiest faculty on the planet,

and I say this with utmost sincerity.

- To be able to be part of this community

that is both equal parts creative and hardworking

and all in it for the same thing,

to make this world a better place,

a more beautiful place,

a more enriching place.

- I am very proud to be here

and to be of service to the students.

- [Dave] I can say 100% confident

that we are preparing students for the future.

- They are prepared to meet employers' expectations.

- They are ready to go and work in industry from day one.

They don't need to be trained.

- [Meriem] They are ready to hit the ground running.

- Through all the experiences

that they have here at UW-Stout,

our students are ready to go.

They're ready to go change the world.

University of Münster image film - english version - Duration: 7:37.

( voice-over) Yes! And sound is running.

So, here's the shirt and the script and

I would add a few things.

Surprise! Surprise!

But let's leave it as discussed. Are we ready?

(voice-over) We are rollin!

Okay!

One of the largest and greatest universities in Germany -

in one of the country's most beautiful cities.

This combination is, what the University of Münster offers.

44,000 students in 15 departments with a 120 subjects being studied -

from law to astrophysics and from music to animal welfare.

A good place for learning, teaching, research, thinking ...

I couldn't agree more

Münster University: a beautiful place to study!

But you don't have to take my word for it.

Excuse me? Do you study here and how do you like it?

Yes, I study here. It's really fun!

I'm do my PhD here and I come

from a small city in India. And living in Münster is nice and peaceful.

The university is so huge and it's really fun to be here.

What I like most here, is that the university buildings are all over the city.

So sometimes it can happen, that you have to walk for five minutes,

but there's always a nice cafe on the way!

(somebody harrumphs) May I just continue please!

We're talking about the quality of our university.

It's not primarily size that matters.

What's more important is, how it tackles the challenges presented in research and education.

Münster University brings together what exists only side-by-side

at other places.

Research and education.

Students of pharmacy for example

are involved in research projects at an early stage

You are so right!

And it is called learning through research.

Here in the Pharmschool is a group of young students doing exactly that .

What are you doing exactly? Yeah, we are on our third year

and we're working on asthma.

Our goal is it to get the drug more efficiently into the lung of the patient.

And do you like it?

It's cool. It can be hard work, but it's cool!

Teaching here at Münster needs first-rate equipment.

And that's what the university has.

In lecture halls, seminar rooms and laboratories.

Nice!

And this applies especially to excellent research.

Which is being carried out in a large

number of fields at Münster University

Or I can say it with flowers: Right now

researchers at Münster University are about to change in the world!

Florentin, how are you doing that?

Yeah, we are doing research on the blue Lupin.

And we'd like to build up this plant as a real competitor to soy.

The Lupin is a good producer of protein.

But not as good as soy yet.

The problem with soy is, that

it's cultivation causes a lot of environmental damage worldwide.

With our research with the breeding project we aim to improve the protein quality as well

as the quantity to get a real alternative to soy.

Thats sounds ambitious!

So, I guess, it's best if you work with the best. Right?

Yeah! That's why I'm here.

Of course it's nice to work as a PhD with the best,

but even more important is good supervision and support.

And here, I've got all of it!

Today real progress in science is only possible, when many disciplines join

forces to work on current challenges.

This is why at the University of Münster

you find so many research training groups, research teams

collaborative research centres and clusters of excellence.

And that is a huge advantage, that our university has!

When there are so many disciplines,

the opportunities for a collaboration are unlimited!

Münster University is involved in more than 500 corporations with universities

and scientific institutions around the globe.

Ground control here again!

These links bring benefits for all students.

Regardless of whether they're studying

music, astrophysics, Islamic studies or Business Administration,.

Am I right?

Hey, I'm Marc. Universita Di Carlo Bo. Urbino. Italia.

Laura from the University of Avignon, France.

Hello, my name is Jens. Dookyo Medical University in Mibu, Japan.

Hi, my name is Lotta

And I study at Hawaii Pacific University in Honululu Hawaii.

And you like it?

Studying, research and teaching - all these demand commitment from everyone.

This is why Münster University has a commitment to everyone here.

In the form of individual support -

from the first semester up to the start of the career.

That is our University!

Wait a minute. That's not all you need to know.

What you need to know is, that the University of Münster is in - Münster!

And Münster is a beautiful place.

Not only for working and studying, but also for ...

flat sharing

cooking

dining

shopping

cycling

enjoying culture - creating culture

relaxing

doing sports Come on guys!

dancing

The University of Münster -

the place that combines outstanding academic studies,

scientific excellence and good living.

That's why the university's motto is:

Living. Knowledge.

I couldn't have put it any better.

(voice-over) Aaand cut!

Do you always have to have the last word?

Me? No.

And now?

Back to work!

Back to life!

The other way round.

Oh, right! The other way round.

I mean back to work!

Back to life!

Studies!

Enjoying yourself.

Science.

Hanging out with friends!

Sexual & Gender Based Conduct Policy Training - Auburn University Graduate School - Duration: 32:01.

So I'm Kim White. I'm a Title IX Investigator in the Office of AA/EEO

and Title IX. We're in 317 Foy Hall. Foy Hall is the

one that has like Chicken Salad Chick and Panda downstairs. We are upstairs on

the third floor so if you get on the elevator...

third floor, bam, we're right there. We handle all of the complaints that deal

with harassment or discrimination based on protected class all the protected

classes you know like race, sex, gender national origin, disability, veteran

status all the protected classes but today we're just gonna be talking about

sex and gender and our Title IX Policy.

Okay, so Title IX comes from the Education Amendment Act of 1972 and it's pretty

straightforward it says that educational institutions that receive federal money

shouldn't discriminate against people on the basis of sex so this is K through 12

and colleges and universities so guess who gets federal money...

Auburn. Guess who wants to continue to get federal money...

Auburn. So please don't discriminate against people on the basis of sex. It's

just not a nice thing to do and also we would like to continue to get federal

money so we've got this pretty basic paragraph here don't discriminate

against people on the basis of sex. That sounds pretty straightforward but we

know that things go to court and we get better definitions of what that actually

means and then 1972 we get this act - don't discriminate against people on the

basis of sex...got it. Then in the 1980s the court cases were focusing more on

athletics and there was a big difference between men's sports and women's sports

on campus. They were very unequal so the courts were looking at those and saying

well it looks like women aren't getting equal opportunities on campus so that's

where we got a lot of our women's sports programs is through these court cases so

a lot of times when people think of Title IX they think of women's sports.

Then in the 90s, the court cases were dealing more with sexual harassment and

the court said that if you're coming to school

cool and you're worried about being sexually harassed all the time that's

probably going to interfere with your education. That's not giving you an equal

opportunity to get an education so they held that sexual harassment is a form of

discriminating against people on the basis of sex and then in the same vein

in the 2000s, they were focused more on sexual assault and they said that sexual

assault is a form of sexual harassment which is a form of sex discrimination

and then in 2011, things changed for us big time. The Department of Education

issued some guidance and it said a lot of things but one of the big things was

you know they were warning schools that hey this act has been around since the

70s you need to take it seriously you need to have your own processes to deal

with sexual misconduct so a lot of what we talked about today may also be a

crime but it's not enough for a school to say, "hey that sounds like a crime, take

that to the police," and just wash our hands of it. No, we have to have our own

in-house process to address complaints of sexual misconduct. The courts have

also held that Title IX also protects employees so we'll get into that in

little more. Okay, so our policy is really called the Policy on Sexual and

Gender Based Misconduct and Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence. That is a

really long name so most people just call it the Title IX Policy or the Sex

and Gender Policy. It changed about a year ago. It used to be where we do kind

of a preliminary investigation and then if it was students involved they would

go to Student Conduct in front of a hearing panel and have a hearing there

but we've changed it to now it's all in-house. They come talk to us, we talk to

both sides, talk to witnesses they suggest, we look at evidence that they

offer and then we write a report. They get to see what each other said, what all

the witnesses said, they get to respond to that but they're not in front of a

hearing panel so it looks a lot less like court because we are not court.

We're an administrative process and so people who have experienced sexual

misconduct can choose to use our administrative process and the legal

process, or neither or both, but there are reasons that people would want to use

one or the other because there's different purposes, there's different

definitions and different timelines so for example

there's a criminal definition for rape and it has several elements. One can be

force that overcomes earnest resistance whereas our policy talks about sexual

assault and affirmative consent so there are two different definitions. We're also

looking at different rules of evidence and different burdens of proof so you

know if you go to court a jury is looking at beyond a reasonable doubt

that's like a really high burden because someone can be thrown to jail, thrown in

jail, they can be sent to death row in some states there are huge, huge

consequences. Our standard is preponderance of the evidence because

we're an administrative process. We're looking at is it more likely than not

that someone violated our policy because we have important consequences, you know,

we can have people fired or suspended or expelled and those are big consequences

but it's different than you know jail and things like that.

We're also looking at different timelines so I know when you watch Law

and Order or something like that they catch the perp in the first five minutes

and then by the end of the show they're in jail forever, appeal rights are

exhausted, everything's done. It's all in a nice little package but in real life

it takes years and years and years for things to make their way through the

legal system and that is a really long time if you're sitting in class with

someone who has harassed or assaulted you or if you're in the same residence

hall as someone who has arrested or assaulted you or you know if you're

working with someone who has harassed or assaulted you so we try to have an

expedited process. We try to get things done in 60 days. That can't always happen

because you know we have to be thorough and sometimes there are breaks and

finals and things like that we try to be sensitive to people's schedules but we

do try to do this as quickly as we can while still being thorough and fair just

so the process is not hanging over people's heads for longer than necessary.

Okay, so our policy and procedures protect students from sexual misconduct.

They also protect employees. It's a consent based policy so we'll be

talking about consent. It sets out the procedures that we follow when we get a

report of sexual misconduct and it sets out the definitions for things that we

prohibit so we're not going to get very detailed into procedures because they're

pretty detailed. The thing most people need to know is the very beginning so

when we get a report of sexual misconduct the first thing we do is make

sure the person is safe and their medical needs are taken care of and then

we offer to talk about options and resources and accommodations, how they

can report, different things like that so that's usually the first

step of the process that you would need to be aware of as responsible employees.

Okay, our first definition for prohibited conduct is sexual or gender based

harassment and this is unwelcome sexual advances requests, for sexual favors, or

other conduct of a sexual nature, or harassment based on gender, sexual

orientation, gender identity, or gender expression when one of these three

bottom bullets is present so you've got to have one of the top two and then one

of the bottom three so it's either a term or condition of education or

employment or it's the basis for education or employment decisions about

that person or the conduct is so severe or pervasive that it creates a hostile

environment so like I said we deal with all the protective class based

harassment discrimination complaints and a lot of people come into our office and

they'll say that "my boss or my professor is a jerk to everyone regardless of sex

or any other class" and that is awful and I hate it and I'm so sorry and I've

been there but it's probably not a Title IX issue if it's not based on sex or

gender but we can help get you pointed in the right direction and we're going

to talk about these three bottom bullets more. Okay.

It's unwanted conduct of a sexual nature and you think that's pretty

straightforward but you would be surprised the people that come into our

office and say "how could that be taken as sexual" so we have to go into it in a

little more detail so this can be verbal or written conduct.

Things like commenting about people's clothing or their bodies, making sex

jokes, sexual innuendos, things like that so this can be tricky because hopefully

you're all friendly with your co-workers and your students and it's fine, you know,

to be friendly and to compliment each other but you know it's one thing to say

"hey Kim nice shirt" it's another thing to say "oh girl I like the way that shirt

hugs your curves." We know there's a difference like we're at work, we're at

school. You've got to keep things professional

and keep it on the professional line of things. This conduct can also be physical

or nonverbal so physical conduct can run the game up between just hugging or all

the way up to sexual assault. There's a wide range in there and I like to give

Auburn examples when possible so several years ago we had reports of an

employee offering students massages so this employee was not a massage

therapist or masseuse or anything like that. It was just wrong so that person is

no longer at Auburn so that is unwanted conduct of a sexual nature of the

physical variety so we also have nonverbal sexual harassment things like

looking someone up and down, derogatory gestures, masturbation or

things like that. Okay, the bottom three bullets Quid pro Quo harassment means

this for that so this is when someone in a position of authority abuses that

authority and makes someone else submit to sexual conduct as a term or condition

of their education or employment so this is like saying "hey sweet thing let's go

get a drink and you'll get an a on that test" or "oh you turned me down for date

so now you're not going to get that good research assignment." Something like that.

This is really an abuse of authority it's like a old-school, madman level

abuse of authority so people usually aren't goofy enough to flat-out say

things like that but we can imply it from the circumstances. A more common

complaint is hostile environment and this is when the unwanted conduct is

sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates a hostile

environment and it interferes with someone's ability to get their education

or to do their job so you notice it says severe, persistent, or pervasive. Any one

of those will do and this doesn't have to be a power imbalance situation. This

can be from a subordinate, like a student could harass you or one of your

professors could harass you or even just visitors to campus so we had an example

of this where a vendor was on campus and was cat calling our students so now that

vendor is no longer allowed on campus so that's an example but a single incident

can be severe enough that it creates a hostile environment. For example, sexual

assault. If you're sexually assaulted one time that's probably sufficiently severe

that it's going to interfere with your work or school whereas things that are

on the other end of the spectrum you know comments or like touching light, you

know, hugging or patting or something like that. It may have to happen more

times to be a hostile environment so but those small things can build up over

time and they can become so persistent or pervasive that they interfere with

someone's work or school. Okay, so we're looking at whether the behavior is

subjectively and objectively offensive to a reasonable person so not only was

the person who received the conduct offended but would a reasonable person

also be offended. Not someone who has really thin skin or not someone who just

doesn't give a rat. You know, just someone kind of in the middle. A

hypothetical reasonable person. So the gender of the people involved isn't

relevant. We have plenty of cases of women harassing men and of same-sex

harassment and we take all those reports seriously and this bottom bullet is

important because even if conduct happens away from campus it can still be

a policy violation so if you are downtown and a student harasses you or a

professor harasses you or anyone harasses you and then you come back onto

campus and you see that person...well you didn't magically forget about it because

it happened off campus and now you're on campus. No, you may still have to look at

them and wonder "ugh is this going to affect my grade, is this going to affect class"

and so even if it didn't happen on campus if it's having an adverse effect

while the persons on campus it can still be a policy violation. Okay.

Our next definition is sexual assault and like I mentioned it's different from

the criminal definition of rape. This is sexual contact or sexual intercourse

without affirmative consent so it can happen from force or ignoring someone's

objections, causing someone's incapacitation, or taking advantage of

another person's incapacitation so for affirmative consent we're looking for

explicit communication of mutual approval to engage in those specific

actions so it's important to remember that consenting to one form of sexual

activity doesn't necessarily mean someone is consenting to another form. It

doesn't always have to be verbal. We know most times people don't sit down ahead

of time and like talk about what they will and won't do and what they do and

don't consent to but we're looking for words or actions, would a reasonable

person think this person was consenting to the sexual activity and we understand

this in other areas like we know if I come out to you and I stick out my hand

and you stick out your hand well you know you didn't say yes you may shake my

hand but I could reasonably infer that you were okay with that handshake. I

can't make a reasonable assumption that you're also down for that full body

massage that offered you. We know that one thing does not necessarily mean

another, that one form of sexual activity is not a blank check for all forms of

sexual activity and the big thing is the absence of a no is not a yes so I know

when I was in school all the posters said no means no. That was the big

tagline but now we're looking at affirmative consent and we're looking at

what was the yes. What lets you know that person was okay with engaging in this

behavior. Okay, I have a video that I love. It's pretty short. Please let me

know if you can't hear it.

If you're still struggling with consent, just imagine instead of

initiating sex you're making them cup of tea. You say "hey would you like a cup of

tea" they go "oh my god, I would love a cup of tea, thank you." Then you know they want

a cup of tea if you say "would you like a cup of tea and they're like "I'm not really sure" then you

could make them a cup of tea, or not, but be aware they might not drink it and if

they don't drink it then, and this is the important part, don't make them drink it.

Just because you made it doesn't mean you are entitled to watch them drink it

and if they say "no thank yo"u then don't make them tea, at all.

Just don't make them tea, don't make them drink tea, don't get annoyed at them for

not wanting tea. They just don't want tea, okay.

They might say "yes please, that's kind of you" and then when the tea arrives they

actually don't want the tea at all. Sure that's kind of annoying as you've gone

to all the effort of making the tea but they remain under no obligation to drink

the tea. They did one tea. Now they don't. Some people change their mind in the

time that it takes to boil the kettle, brew the tea, and add the milk and it's

okay for people to change their mind and you are still not entitled to watch them

drink it and if they're unconscious don't make them tea. Unconscious people

don't want tea and they can't answer the question "do you want tea" because their

unconscious. Okay, maybe they were conscious when you asked them if they

wanted tea and they said "yes" but in the time it took you to boil the kettle, brew

the tea, and add the milk they are now unconscious. You should just put the tea

down. Make sure the unconscious person is safe and, this is the important part

again, don't make them drink the tea. They said "yes" then. Sure.

But unconscious people don't want tea. If someone said yes to tea, started

drinking it, and then passed out before they finished it, don't keep on pouring

it down their throat. Take the tea away, make sure they're safe because

unconscious people don't want tea. Trust me on this. If someone said "yes" to tea

around your house last Saturday that doesn't mean they want you to make them

tea all the time. They don't want you to come around to their place unexpectedly

and make them tea and force them to drink it going "but you wanted tea last

week" or to wake up to find you pouring tea down their throat going "but you

wanted tea last night" but if you can understand how completely ludicrous it

is to force people to have tea when they don't want tea and you're able to

understand when people don't want tea then how hard is it to understand it

when it comes to sex? Whether it's tea or sex, consent is everything and on that

note I'm going to go make myself a cup of tea. Okay. I love it. It's

a cute video but it's a little simplistic. I know that there are stages

between heck yeah I want tea and being passed out so we're looking at is

someone incapacitated. Are they not capable of making voluntary, informed

decisions about whether they want to engage in sexual activity so we look for

common signs of incapacitation, slurring trouble walking, things like that to

determine if incapacitation was present because I'm gonna tell you something

that may surprise you so our students drink and they do it regardless of

whether they're 21 and some of them have fake IDs. I know you're very shocked,

right? Underage drinking is a problem. It's a problem at most schools but if

someone is in our office about a complaint of sexual misconduct that's

not what we're there for. We're not going to tell their parents they were drinking

underage, not going to tell the police they were drinking underage, we're not going

to take their fake ID so if a student comes to you and says they've

experienced sexual misconduct but they really don't want to report it because

they were drinking underage at the time, please tell them that is not the concern

when they come to our office. That's not what we're there for.

The next definition is sexual exploitation. It's a pretty broad

definition as you can tell by the many bullets but it's causing someone's

incapacitation or compromising their ability to give affirmative consent so

that would usually be paired with sexual assault so someone would be under

investigation for sexual assault and sexual exploitation or allowing third

parties to watch sexual activity, voyeurism, recording or photographing

sexual activity without consent, or sending those images around without

consent, prostituting another person, or intentionally exposing someone to an

STI so the one I like to point out is the disseminating or posting images of

sexual activity without consent because you know sometimes in the legal system

if everyone's of age and you voluntarily take photos of yourself and send them to

someone else you know there's not a whole lot you can do but if they're

Auburn people we can say "hey if you send those images out without consent then

you can be sanctioned" so we can address that if they are Auburn people. We have

people that will try to blackmail students with compromising photographs

so that one comes up pretty regularly. Okay, the next definition is intimate

partner violence. Back in my day it was called dating violence and domestic

violence but this is violence that's between people in a intimate

relationship so that can be dating, marriage, they have a kid in common,

something like that so this can pair with any other prohibited conduct - so

if there's a sexual assault between people who are in a relationship

it'd be an investigation for sexual assault and intimate partner violence

and so we have factors that we look at to determine whether one of these

relationships is present because students now don't really date you know

they don't really call it that they're hanging out or they're talking or

they're Netflix and chilling or something like that

but we have factors that we look at to determine if this relationship is

present and in situations like this they can go to the Justice Center and ask for

a protection from abuse order. It's what people think of as a restraining order

but they can apply for that from the Justice Center.

Okay, the next one is stalking. This is the course of conduct directed at

someone that would make someone feel fear or experience substantial emotional

distress. This is a course of conduct, it's more than one action. It can be

things like following someone around, blowing up their phone, leaving them

gifts, watching them, things like this. This is the one that students will joke

about you know like when I work Camp War Eagle. I everyday have several people

say " haha this person's been following me all day" because you know they go around

in the little groups but this one gets really scary, really fast when you're on

the other end of it and we've had a big uptick in this and actually cases of

women stalking men electronically so we've had problems with that and a

problem with Find My Friends. They use it to follow each other around so we have a

problem with that so an Auburn example is we once had a lab and there were two

students sitting over on one side and then the next class period they were

over here in the back and the next one they were over there. They were just kind

of following each other around the room and the GA teaching the class was like

"maybe it's not a big deal, maybe they know each other" and then when the

students comes up and turns in A paper and says "I don't know why he keeps

sitting by me. It's freaking me out. I don't know him." So the GA reported that

to us you know not everything is you know an immediate expel everyone

involved situation but we were able to step in separate them, say "hey please

don't sit by he,r please don't talk to her" and kind of calm things down and

that was a good example of an Auburn employee paying attention and reporting

things that they should have reported.

Okay, retaliation and complicity. These usually also pair with

other prohibited conduct but people should not be retaliated against for

coming to our office to file a complaint or for participating in the process so

if they're a witness. Retaliation is any adverse effect against someone, something

that would discourage a reasonable person from participating in the process

so even if a person isn't found responsible for the original thing we

were investigating but they retaliate against a witness this is its own

separate thing. They could be found responsible for retaliation.

This usually shows up when you know we do an investigation and we write a

report and then one party or the other

calls the witnesses and says "I saw what

you said about me I'm going to make your life miserable" so even if we didn't find

them responsible for the original thing we were looking into this is its own

standalone prohibited conduct. This also comes up in the employee situation when

students report things to employees and then they don't report it to Title IX

so we've had situations where students have told a professor or GA "hey I was

sexually assaulted, please don't tell anyone" and then that person doesn't tell

anyone and then the students grades start slipping and maybe they, you know,

get an F, maybe they get kicked out the program, something like that and then

they come to our office and they say "hey I told you I was sexually assaulted and

you kicked me out of the program. That seems like retaliation" and maybe it wasn't,

maybe it had nothing to do with the sexual assault but it's important that

if someone discloses sexual misconduct to you, that you report it to us so that

if you know someone is going to get bad grades or something like that that we

can walk you through the process, that we can make sure that we've offered

them accommodations, offered to get them to counseling, things like that wait so

we can make sure we've done everything that we can for them and make sure that

the adverse action is in no way related to the sexual misconduct and the last

one is complicity so this is helping someone commit prohibited conduct. It's

kind of like aiding and abetting and so there would usually be two

people under investigation for that so how does Title IX affect you as GAs?

So you're protected as students and employees so like if there's a Venn

diagram of students and employees, there you are in the middle so you've got

these protections but you also have responsibilities so you should not be

discriminated against on the basis of sex or gender but you should also not

discriminate against other people on the basis of sex or gender and you need to

report sexual misconduct when you hear about it. So you're a GA and you're an

authority figure. You're an Auburn employee and so you've got to remember

that and make sure the people around you don't feel like they're being sexually

harassed and don't feel like Auburn is the place where that's promoted because

they are looking up to you to set an example even if you're close in age to

the students in your class, you're still the authority figure and

they're looking to you to behave properly so never flirt with ask out, or

consensually date someone in your lab or class. Period. This is, every semester

pretty much we have to fire someone for this so I'm not playing. We have a

policy called the Intimate Relations Policy and it says you cannot engage in

or pursue a romantic or sexual relationship with anyone you teach or

supervise so I know they're a good-looking people at Auburn but there

is no one so good-looking that you can't wait until they're out of your class. If

you see them on Tinder, swipe left and if you've got questions about whether a

certain relationship is prohibited you can call and talk hypothetically and we

can kind of walk you through that the problem with this is like even if it's

consensua,l you say it's consensual, at the time they say it's consensual,

well then things go south and then they come to us and they say "well of course I

went along with it, they're grading me. What was I gonna do?" So that's the

problem with this but really this is serious so also please avoid

sexual jokes or discussions that aren't relevant to the course material so I

know that sometimes they are relevant like if you are in the English

department and you are teaching Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and you don't

talk about sex I don't know how you did that. That's impressive.

The whole book is sex, but if you're talking about like soil or geography or

tectonic plates or something, sex jokes should not come up. That's just not

relevant to the course material so if you need clarifications about that too

you can call and talk hypothetically. Okay, the big thing is you're all

responsible employees. Almost every employee at Auburn is a responsible

employee. The only exception are confidential employees like people at

the med clinic or student counseling, Safe Harbor, things like that so you have

an obligation to report sexual misconduct. It's an obligation. It's in

bold. It's not a "we'll see how it shakes out" it's not "uh

I don't know if I believe them." No, it's an obligation you have to do this so if

a student comes to you and says "hey I want to talk to you about something you

gotta promise not to tell..." you cannot promise them that. Hopefully you can stop

them and say "hey thanks for coming to me. I gotta let you know I have to report

certain things so you might want to consider talking to someone

confidentially first" and you can direct them to

Safe Harbor or to student counseling and I've got cards up here that you can have

to hand out to them if you want but if they go ahead and disclose something to

you tell them "thanks for trusting me with this. I've got to let you know I'm

gonna reach out to Title IX and tell them about this and Title IX is going to

offer to discuss resources rights options with you." They don't have to take

us up on it but we're going to reach out to them and offer. Also if you observe

something in your classroom or lab go ahead and report that to. Okay, also,

since you're teaching you have a duty to accommodate pregnant students so usually

where this comes up is with absences so even if you have a syllabus that says

something like "four absences. That's it. Period. No exceptions," you have to make an

exception for pregnant students who are missing class with the doctor's note due

to the pregnancy so if you think someone is taking too much advantage of this

policy please don't attack the student you know just let us know and we can

look into it and make sure things are being done properly. All right we've got

some good resources on campus. My boss is Kelley Taylor. She's the Title IX

Coordinator. She's also in 317 Foy. We also have Deputy Title IX Coordinators.

Lady Cox in student affairs and David Mines in athletics so if you're more

comfortable with them you can talk to them. We have Safe Harbor which has a

24/7 number and they're a confidential resource. We have student counseling.

They're also confidential and then for employees we have the Employee

Assistance Program and they refer people out to counselors in the community. On

campus we have our Department of Public Safety and Security. They're the ones

that send out the crime alerts they also have a daily crime log and an annual

crime report that's interesting to look, the Auburn City Police so if you

see an emergency happening call 9-1-1 also have the non-emergency

number up there and then this is important so if someone has been

recently raped or drugged and they want a forensic exam done they need to go to

the emergency room at the EAMC so not the med clinic on campus. They

don't do forensic exams because there are chain of custody issues with

preserving that forensic evidence so they need to go to EAMC to the emergency

room if they want a forensic exam. We also have a Title IX

website so it has our

policy, it has that list of resources, frequently asked questions, things like

that. It also has a "report an incident" button so you can report things by

clicking that it comes up with a form or you can call us, you can email us you, can

come by if it's during business hours but if you do this form it will let you

submit it anonymously but please don't since your employees we may need to

reach out to you to get more information so that we can fulfill our obligations

but just to wrap up, please remember that you're a responsible employee you have

an obligation to report sexual misconduct.

Make sure the person's safe. That's always the first thing. Let them know

you're not a confidential resource, you have a duty report things. Offer to send

them to a confidential resource. Like I said we've got those cards but if they

disclose something that sexual misconduct report it to the timeline

office don't assume someone else will report it a lot of times a student will

tell you something and then they'll say "you know what you're right I'm gonna go

report it right now" and then they don't so that's when things slip through the

cracks so don't just assume someone else is going to report it you go ahead and

report it and if we get multiple reports about the same thing we'll sort it out.

That's not a big deal so all right and that's all I have if

you have questions you can ask them or if you don't want them on camera you can

come up after and ask.

Thank y'all.

I guess it was meant to be to do it at home because

I don't really think about it coming up on me and here we are at home celebrating both of those and

it couldn't be nicer. I'm blessed to have so many alums here that actually made this happen

with their great athleticism and how hard they worked, including my present team.

And I think of all the fantastic assistant coaches I have.

They all lifted me up — and the program up — to get to these milestones, so

I want to thank each and every one of them if they're watching.

Physical Therapy at Brenau University - Duration: 2:28.

The first time I worked in the pro bono clinic, I was solely responsible for my

first patient. So I did the evaluation. I diagnosed him with what I thought.

I treated this patient and at the very end I actually got so excited I cried,

which is kind of silly, but I had actually helped that patient. The patient was so happy

that I was just like "this is what I want to do." Because you get so wrapped up in

school and tests and papers and computers and all this stuff, and then you forget,

like, you're dealing with people. Then you put your hands on that person and

they're so happy and excited, it's just like, "wow!"

The way that it works at Brenau is you have all of these clinical exposures, whether it's through wellness

clients or whether it's through the hospital, or the faculty clinic and the

pro bono clinic. You have plenty of opportunities to get involved with

patient care. So when you go learn something in, let's say, anatomy or

musculoskeletal, you bring that back to the clinic and you can apply it to a

patient immediately. And your ability to retain and apply that information is just out of this world.

When I came to this program I was terrified of going to the hospital.

I took part in the early mobility program. We were just

implementing a simple program that's under research, which is getting patients

out of bed early after surgery. People had this idea in their minds that "oh you

know, it's all terrifying. There's equipment and there's needles and

there's body fluids." But then when you're there you kind of forget the scary stuff

because you're working with the patient. I absolutely want to start my career in a hospital.

All of my professors, they have an open-door policy. There's not one

professor that I feel like, if I was struggling in something, I couldn't go to

their office and tell them, like, "hey look, I don't understand this concept."

They really take the responsibility of making sure, if you come to them, if you don't have it

they will make sure that you walk out of their office knowing the material.

Brenau has prepared me to be a good physical therapist because they

have emphasized and given us many opportunities to work with patients,

and remind us that that's the reason that we're actually becoming a physical therapist.

It's not to treat diseases. It's not to have an ideal work schedule.

It's to help impact people's lives, and they remind us

because they give us the chance to do that at an early stage and make that be

the desire throughout our program.

New space to promote student success - College of Nursing - Wayne State University - Duration: 2:53.

Here in the College of Nursing we say urban health is in our DNA.

It is what we do.

More than 80 percent of the graduates in the college stay in Southeastern Michigan.

And they provide care for the citizens of Detroit.

When we admit students to the College of Nursing, we talk to them about, "you are now a member

of the most trusted profession in the United States.

You've joined this important group of professionals.

And then, when they look to where do we study, where do we work, we point them to the hallways

and the stairwells.

The Cohn Building was constructed for a period of time when all of our learning happened

in the classroom.

It was formal learning in the classroom and then clinical learning in a remote clinical

site.

We've done a lot of work in the building contemporizing our classroom space and our lab room space.

One of the things that we've not addressed is the need for that informal group gathering

space that's so central to contemporary nursing education.

We know that a contemporary nursing student benefits from tutoring, from peer support,

from instruction that happens outside of the classroom.

And when we think about health care in the United States, we deliver care in teams.

Our students need the ability to be able to learn those skills by having a place where

they can work together.

Where students can interact with each other, where a student can see others who at a different

degree level.

I think it's important that students have a variety of spaces across the campus.

Where they gather, where they interact.

But it's also important for a student to have a space in what they see is their home college.

The Student Commons Project is an opportunity to help actualize this vision.

The Student Commons will be located on the third floor, here in the College of Nursing.

We see this space as consisting of a variety of neighborhoods, where a student can find

a quiet space to study individually, where there's comfortable furniture for a group

of students to work together.

To be able to access technology, so that we as a group can work on a case study or a presentation.

There's also a space for our student nurses association to gather and spend some social

time with each other.

Funding for the Student Commons will be solely from the generosity of our College of Nursing

community.

This is an opportunity for all of us to support the next generation of our profession.

The Student Commons isn't just a bricks and mortar project.

It's an investment in the success of our students.
