a Health Education Specialist?
First, a brief overview.
The what, where and when of a Health Education Specialist.
A Health Education Specialist is someone who works within a community to promote and maintain
positive health behaviors.
They accomplish this through the use of the seven key areas of responsibility.
The seven key areas of responsibility are…
Assessing the needs of a community,
planning programs and interventions,
implementing programs and interventions,
conducting evaluations of and research pertaining to those programs and interventions,
managing programs and interventions,
providing resources for those programs and interventions,
and advocating for health.
Health Education Specialists assess, plan, implement,
evaluate, manage, provide and advocate all to better the health of the community.
Where do they do all of this work?
They do it in hospitals,
state and local health departments,
they do it in schools,
and in non-profit organizations.
When will you find Health Education Specialists doing all of this work?
You'll find them early in the morning and late at night.
During the week and on the weekends,
Health Education Specialists work anytime!
Some background, what does it take to become a Health Education Specialist?
They have at least a bachelor's degree and a masters degree is encouraged.
They have a CHES certification, which is a Certified Health Education Specialist certification,
and they are skilled in communication, problem solving, and human interaction.
They can be part of either or both of these professional organizations.
SOPHE the Society for Public Health Education, and or the APHA the American Public Health
Association.
Some pros and cons of being a Certified Health Education Specialist.
Is it worth it?
Some pros are they have above average employment rates and they get to help the community.
Some cons, public policy can make change nearly impossible, making their job extremely difficult,
and nights and weekends are not free.
So, what is a Health Education Specialist?
A Health Education Specialist is someone who works to promote health in their community,
who happens to be an excellent communicator and problem solver.
They have at least a bachelors degree, and never stop talking about SOPHE and the APHA.
