Trent University 3MT 2018: President's First Prize Winner, Chris Magwood - Duration: 2:52.
The story of my research here at Trent begins with my introduction to this Carbon elephant
that is on the screen beside me here.
And that Carbon elephant is made out of all the greenhouse gasses that are emitted when
building materials are harvested and manufactured.
And it turns out that about 20% to 25% of all greenhouse gasses on the planet come from
the harvesting and manufacturing of building materials.
But, I call it the Carbon elephant in the room because the building industry isn't really
talking about this issue.
For my research, what I wanted to do was model the same building using a different variety
of materials in each iteration of the building and see what the combination of embodied carbon
emissions and operational emissions looked like by the time we get to 2050.
So you can see behind me there are four graphs.
The very first building is a very typical code-built home: the way we build basically
all of our buildings in Ontario.
And you can see that by the time we get out to 2050, there's a significant amount of greenhouse
gas associated with that house.
But, most of it is embodied Carbon not operational Carbon.
The second building is an example of trying to solve a problem and causing a problem when
you are trying to solve the problem.
The second building is a high-performance home that tries to address the operational
Carbon of the building by making that building really energy efficient.
But it does so with really high embodied Carbon materials.
And so you can see by the thickness of that orange stripe on the bottom that even though
you can barely see the operational Carbon on that graph, the total Carbon is significantly
higher than the code-built home.
So in trying to make a building more energy efficient, you can mistakenly cause greater
Carbon emissions than if you just built to code.
Now the two bottom graphs there are the ones that really interest and excite me, because
they completely flip the paradigm upside down.
These are buildings that use materials that actually store Carbon in the materials.
So, if you build with plant-based materials those plants have taken Carbon Dioxide out
of the atmosphere and when you lock those materials up in the building, you've stored
that Carbon.
So you can see that the net emissions of those two bottom buildings are below zero and as
their operational Carbon emissions gradually rise over time, by the time you get to 2050
you're still a net Carbon sequesterer in that building.
So the end point of my research is to propose a policy suggestion for the building code
here in Ontario that would regulate that embodied Carbon side of the equation and try to encourage
us more toward the lower-type of building and leave the other buildings behind.
And, hopefully, usher this Carbon elephant out of the room.

2018 Scholarship Reception | Maryville University - Duration: 1:29.
To me scholarships are about not just making education a little bit more
affordable but it's also about carrying on the legacy. I was so excited about
giving that that made it I haven't missed a year since then. I want the
opportunity for as many students as possible to come to Maryville, graduate
from Maryville, and go out and spread the Maryville word. So anybody who is looking
for a way to put their money to good use I would think suggest that they consider
Maryville. So the scholarship has allowed me to actually attend the college of my
dreams. There's not a lot of Music Therapy schools out in the state of
Missouri and so it means a lot to be able to come to Maryvillel and pursue
my passion. This scholarship has meant the world to me.
I know I'm secure in furthering my education.
Oh it's meant everything to me. It makes me want to tear up because like I said
without her I couldn't continue my education so she's gonna make my dreams
come true. Maryville University and the scholarship
I've been awarded has been a superb opportunity. It is open doors for me that
I could not have imagined if otherwise. So I encourage any other donors to go
ahead and make the commitment and help another student out.

University Singers of Southern Wesleyan University - Duration: 1:01.
-University singers has impacted my life in a very big way,
I've grown spiritually I've grown musically and I've developed friendships
that will last a lifetime.
-The military is definitely one of the coolest parts of the team because what
college student gets an opportunity like walking onto a military base and getting
to sing in front of soldiers? That is such a cool experience.
-We have had the awesome opportunity to minister to our troops
I personally was able to go on our previous mission trip on operation
freedoms cadence in 2017 and we went to Italy, we ministered to troops on
overseas assignment and that was just an incredible experience that I didn't even see coming.
The opportunities here are very unique to really any other
ministry that I've ever been a part of.
