THERAPIST: most of the time the virtual worlds are based on a sedentary lifestyle right?

Most of it is in a chair so from my perspective it is dehabilitating.

DRAX OFF SCREEN: that's a good point! SHYLA: mmmmhh.....

TOM BOELLSTORFF [VO]: we included funding to be able to purchase VR equipment for a small

number of people associated with the study not for everyone, so that we could try

and get people with disabilities involved in the conversation from the ground floor.

SHYLA: Ohhh [laughs] did I break it???

DRAX: so where are we going Tom?

TOM: we are going to San Francisco.

DRAX: and what are we doing there?

TOM: we're gonna go to Linden Lab and

we're gonna bring some cool people with us.

TOM: what if we try putting one of these controllers on his foot

because this is smaller it's like a circle and then it would move the avatar arm.

There we go - high-five....high-five!!!

DONNA DAVIS: there is a mind trust out there among people with disabilities, incredibly creative people.

DAISY: I wasn't too sure about this film when we started. Disabled people

are overwhelmingly presented poorly. Most include awful stereotypes about

disabled characters who sit around all day thinking about how horrible their disabilities are.

SHYLA: the thing is I'm not broken, you don't have to fix me and it's

this I'm just gonna call it what it is it's the ableism of the world that thinks I am.

ALUMNIA: I was diagnosed when I was 24. Sometimes people can see me crawling

but so many other people with ADHD are good at this that we can become very

confident and people think that we actually levitate.

VARAHI: when somebody is disabled and they're acting normally with you that's a gift

they're giving you a gift you know you need to appreciate the energy that's going into that.

SHYLA: to me disability becomes a spiritual journey in the sense of

I must have some faith that my entire lack of control over most everything other

than my own attitude I will still be safe.

DONNA: how many of us are trapped inside of a body

or a place that doesn't allow us to really live our lives in the way that

we feel capable of and these technologies may open those doors in really exciting ways.

CODY: if we build it they will come!

CECII: if we build it they will come!

CODY: yeah!

PHILIP ROSEDALE: maybe, unless you're too early. You know what I always love to say about startups

that I find a depressing statement for a start-up entrepreneur is

there's no discernible difference between being early and wrong...

Melissa Rivers on Why It's Important to Stay Tangible in the Digital Age - Duration: 1:04.

You have to remember, most of my mother's career was in a non-digital age.

>> Yeah. Right.

>> So that is how everything was saved.

You kept mementos, you kept your archives, you kept letters,

things we don't keep now.

We stick them in the archive folder and that's that.

You snapshot it on your phone, so we actually.

The lesson I learned from this is there's something really amazing about having

tangible things and what I've started doing.

And things with your parents' writing on it, so like, take the time,

take your favorite photographs, print them out and write something on the back.

>> Because one day your children will have that with your writing and

a thought about it or a date.

Especially today.

Everything is digital!

And there is something amazing about touching those things!

>> Yeah, right.

>> Yeah.

>> I love going through the book!

>> [APPLAUSE] >> The book is fun.

>> The book is phenomenal.

You go to any page and you see,

you feel like you get to know her even that much more.

Digital Impressions at Ocean View Dental Care - Duration: 1:56.

Hello, my name is Dr. Althof with Ocean View Dental Care and today I want to

demonstrate for you how our Digital Impression Machine works. You've probably

had impressions taken in the past, you know, those big, goopy trays? Today we can

do it a lot faster, a lot easier, just by digitally scanning it and then sending

it straight to the lab. If you need a crown, if you need Invisalign, anything

that needs to go to the lab, we can scan very fast, very easy, very quick. Today, I'm

going to demonstrate for you with my assistant Mandi, so, you can see just how

fast and easy it is. So, this is the scanner right here and I'll demonstrate

for you. I'm going to scan her lower right you can see how fast and easy it

shows up on the screen. <Turn for me just a little bit.>

So, this is Mandi's lower right arch right here and you can see we have a very easy

picture that we can move around and the lab will actually use this to fabricate

whatever we need them to make and it's just like taking a regular impression

but it's higher resolution and it's a lot faster you don't have to have that

goop in your mouth. At Ocean View Dental Care we offer our patients the latest

technology to make their appointments as comfortable as possible. Thank you so

much for watching the video and we look forward to meeting you

Sora Han_Internship Digital Story - Duration: 4:45.

Although it only lasted three months,

I felt like my internship lasted three years.

At the end of it all, I sat down for coffee with my director to reflect on my experience.

Walking into it, I still remembered the first day of my internship, the moment I opened the big gray door of U.S China Today.

U.S China Today is a publication of USC U.S. China Institute which publishes an online-magazine,

focusing on the multidimensional and evolving U.S. and Chinese relationship, as well as trends in contemporary China.

I was fearful about having an internship outside of my home country,

because I'm not native speaker of English. On top of that,

participating in an internship at a publication that will require a high level of reading and writing skills only further my fear.

When I opened the door of the office, no one in the office seemed to have any interst in me

My director, Rachel, gave me a brief presentation about the publication, and assigned me a seat in the corner of the office.

My first task was to perform daily updates.

I had to read five news articles and summarize it to convey the complex stories for readers in a succinct manner.

It took me forever to complete one article because

first, I was not confident in whether I was writing in the correct style, and

secondly, I had to read the text again and again to understand the main point

While I was working Rachel asked me several questions as well as if I had any questions,

but I couldn't reply properly because I was crippled by my lack of confidence.

Rachel gave me a cold glass and expressed her disappointment

towards me. From that day on, I had no joy on the way to the office, and only fear and worries were remained.

Luckily,

my first project did not require me to write a long article because it was to create an infographic

I

Collected data information to fill my topic and organize the data with Excel.

Since I'm a person who loves to do research and organize data, I worked on my project with joy.

I worked on my project with joy. When I was enjoying my work, I had more confidence in myself, and created a satisfying product.

It led my director to actively encourage me and compliment me during the project.

The second project was to publish a story in Q&A format.

For the project, a proficient level of listening, reading, and writing were required to raise the degree of completion.

I created 10~15 questions for a 30 minute interview with my interviewee.

Everything seemed to be going well, until I worked on the transcription, a process to create a script from the interview.

Despite the easy vocabulary used by my interviewee, I struggled from the very beginning of the process.

I

replayed the recording of the interview again and again. It took me 6 hours to complete my first draft and I nervously sent it to Rachel.

Despite my best effort, the feedback was cold, and even hurtful. This is the email I got from her

Hi Sora, This is Rachel. I checked your work and there were a considerable number of changes

I needed to make to the transcript.

I want you to work diligently. Many thanks! Best wishes, Rachel

On the next day at the meeting,

She asked me for the result my performance and asked if my poor work was caused by my difficulties in English.

My self-esteem dropped to the bottom, because I had to admit both the poor quality of my work, and my poor level of English.

My face turned red immediately

However, instead of being emotional and pouring out the words

I wanted to say, I apologized and promised her to revise the transcript as best as I could.

Instead of sitting and being depressed, I started to believe in my abilities.

I utilized all the resources that I could to improve my work.

After I submitted the finalized version of the script,

I breathed a huge sigh of relief. But it wasn't over.

She asked me if I could sit down for a coffee with her. An awkward atmosphere existed between us

, and she was the first one to break the ice. She told me that she was not intended to embarrass me, but to help me overcome

my limitation.

Through three months of internship, one important lesson I took out of it was to have confidence in myself

No one is perfect, and trial and error are inevitable. If one does not have confidence in oneself,

one would struggle and fall into despair when the trouble comes.

But, when one believes in oneself, one finds the strength to resolve the problem rationally,

professionally, and maturely. Thank you.
