Rattling not just the allies, but also Tokyo this time.

A ballistic missile passing through Japan's airspace.

What is the underlying intention of the unpredictable regime?

Well, Daniel this is not the first time Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile directly over

Japan.

It's actually the second time.

Most reports have the facts wrong.

North Korea launched an missile known as the Daepodong missile that flew over Japan on

August 31st, 1998, so it's actually the second time.

However, the expert I spoke with says the recent launch has another meaning too.

Here's what he had to say.

(Korean) "The latest missile shows that North Korea

is capable of targeting Guam, making it an indirect threat to the U.S..

They didn't fire the missile due to the ongoing UFG joint military exercise.

They are looking at the bigger picture and showing they are capable of targeting Guam."

12 . . UFG . 12 .

The distance between Pyongyang and Guam is some three thousand kilometers.

At the height of the U.S.-North Korea tensions earlier this month,... North Korea threatened

to launch four Hwasong-12 intermediate ballistic missiles into waters near Guam to show it's

capable of targeting U.S. military bases on the island.

Thanks Hyun-bin for the analysis of North Korea's recent missile launch.

Japan refuses to accept petition filed by victims of wartime sexual slavery - Duration: 0:40.

The Japanese government has refused to accept a petition filed by Korean victims of Japan's

wartime sexual slavery... demanding compensation for Tokyo's war crimes.

An attorney representing the women said on Monday,... Japan returned the complaint to

a South Korean court, on August 16th.

The Japanese government, citing the Hague Service Convention... claims the petition

is a violation of the country's sovereignty.

Although Seoul and Tokyo signed an agreement in late 2015, to end the dispute... the Moon

Jae-in administration says the deal is unacceptable to the Korean people on an emotional level.

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan - Duration: 1:50.

North Korea's launch of yet another ballistic missile is where we begin this afternoon...

The missile flew directly over Japan -- a significant escalation showing North Korean

leader Kim Jong-un's defiance of President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The South Korean military has vowed stern measures against North Korea's continual provocations.

Kim Hyun-bin leads us off at the defense ministry.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Tuesday that the intermediate range ballistic

missile was fired from Sunan, near Pyongyang, at 5:57 a.m, South Korea time.

The JCS says the missile flew directly over Hokkaido and fell into the North Pacific Ocean.

The Pentagon has also confirmed the missile flew over Japan's territory,...adding that

it's still assessing the launch.

The missile flew some 27-hundred kilometers,... reaching an altitude of 550 kilometers...

but the type of missile is yet unknown.

The JCS condemned the launch,... calling it a violation of UN Security Council resolutions...

and a threat to world peace and stability.

(Korean) "North Korea's ballistic missile launch is

a challenge to Seoul and Washington,... and we strongly denounce it.

We are closely monitoring movements from the North,... and we warn the regime to halt all

its provocative acts."

' ' , . , .

Experts say the North probably fired the missile to demonstrate that it's capable of targeting

the U.S. territory of Guam at any given moment.

The distance between Pyongyang and Guam is some three thousand kilometers.

At the height of U.S.-North Korea tensions earlier this month,... North Korea threatened

to launch four intermediate ballistic missiles into waters near Guam to show that it's capable

of targeting U.S. military bases on the island.

South Korea's JCS warned that Seoul and Washington are fully ready to counter any additional

provocations from the North and that it will sternly counter any threats.

Japan says it will respond firmly to N. Korea's latest missile test - Duration: 1:01.

A chorus of condemnation has been streaming in from across the world... following Pyongyang's

latest missile provocation.

Tokyo in particular,... has been incensed... after it was prompted to warn local residents

to take shelter,... as the North Korean missile, flew over its territory.

It's the second time the North has fired a missile over Japan, since 1998... when another

rocket violated Japanese airspace, before falling in the ocean.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says the missile launch was a serious

and unprecedented threat to the country,... and promised to take firm measures.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson,... also slammed the regime, in a statement posted

on Twitter,... saying he was outraged at North Korea's "reckless provocations".

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan-2 - Duration: 0:53.

We're still at the early stages of analysis of the launch.

While we can't pinpoint exactly what type it is... what could we figure out based on

the range and altitude.

That's right.

The National Intelligence Service, the defense ministry will be looking at that question

as we speak.

But based on the data we have, an expert was able to draw this conclusion.

Have a listen.

(Korean) "Looking at the range and altitude of the

missile, it's an IRBM.

North Korea has three types: Pukuksong-2, Musudan and Hwasong-12.

Recently, North Korea attached a new 3-1-8 engine on the Hwasong-12 and tested it four

times and used the same engine to test the Hwasong-14 twice.

Looking at all this information, the regime likely launched a Hwasong -12 IRBM."

North Korea fires ballistic missile directly over Japan - Duration: 2:05.

Let's start with North Korea's launch of yet another ballistic missile.

This wasn't any old launch though -- the missile flew directly over Japan -- a significant

escalation showing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's defiance of President Trump and

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Trump had said Kim was starting to respect

the U.S.,... but he might have to rethink that assessment following what happened this

morning.

Let's get more information from our reporter at Seoul's defense ministry, Kim Hyun-bin.

Hyun-bin,... this is a fluid situation,... and we are still awaiting reactions from the

key players in the region,... but what's the latest you're hearing?

Well,... as you mentioned,... North Korea fired what is believed to be an intermediate-range

ballistic missile over Japan just over four hours ago.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the missile was fired from Sunan, near Pyongyang,

at 5:57 a.m, South Korea time.

The JCS says the missile flew directly over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and

fell into the North Pacific Ocean.

The Pentagon has also confirmed the missile flew over Japan's territory,...adding that

it's still assessing the launch.

The missile flew some 27-hundred kilometers,... reaching an altitude of 550 kilometers.

Experts say the North probably fired the missile to demonstrate that it's capable of targeting

the U.S. territory of Guam at any given moment.

The distance between Pyongyang and Guam is some three thousand kilometers.

At the height of U.S.-North Korea tensions earlier this month,... North Korea threatened

to launch four intermediate ballistic missiles into waters near Guam to show it's capable

of targeting U.S. military bases on the island.

Japan,... which sounded sirens in certain regions upon news of the launch, is deeply

concerned by the escalation,... but made no effort to shoot the missile down.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga described it as an "unprecedented grave

threat" and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to protect the Japanese public in the wake

of this provocation.

This comes after the North launched three short-range ballistic missiles into the East

Sea over the weekend.

We are expecting to be briefed by military officials here shortly,... so hopefully I'll

have more updates for you during the next newscast at noon, Korea time.

Back to you.

Japan says it will respond firmly to N. Korea's latest missile test - Duration: 2:11.

A chorus of condemnation is streaming in from across the world,... following North Korea's

latest missile provocation.

Strong reactions have come out of Japan's government in particular,... after it was

forced to warn local residents to take shelter,... as the missile, whizzed over its territory.

Yu Joonhee reports.

Japan was rattled on Tuesday morning... after Pyongyang fired a missile that flew over its

northern province of Hokkaido,... the first time a North Korean rocket had violated the

country's airspace since 1998.

Local residents were ordered to take shelter,... while train services were temporarily halted,...

as the missile cut across the country's skies, and out towards the Pacific Ocean.

Tokyo's denouncement of the regime's action, was immediate and swift... with Japan's Cabinet

Minister Yoshihide Suga also promising a firm response.

"This ballistic missile passed over our nation and represents the greatest and most serious

threat to the nation ever.

It also is a threat to the peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region."

Other leaders and top officials across the world have also joined in unison... to protest

North Korea's latest missile launch.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson,... slammed the regime in a statement posted on

Twitter,... saying he was outraged at North Korea's "reckless provocations".

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull... also condemned the reclusive regime, while

calling on nations across the globe, to tighten the screws on the North.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters on Tuesday, that he spoke with President Donald

Trump over the phone... where he was assured...

Washington was standing "100 percent" with Japan.

The two allies, along with South Korea... have requested an emergency meeting of the

UN Security Council to discuss North Korea's missile launch.

The UNSC will convene on late Tuesday,... where Prime Minister Abe is expected to request

council members... to pile further pressure on Pyongyang.

which he called a new, serious development.

S. Korea, U.S. and Japan join in condemnation of N. Korea and calls for emergency UNSC meeting - Duration: 2:18.

The Japanese people woke up Tuesday morning to the shocking news North Korea had fired

a missile over Hokkaido.

Tokyo was quick to condemn the launch, calling it a grave and serious threat.

Together with South Korea and the U.S., they have called for an emergency UN Security Council

meeting to try and pile more pressure on the regime.

Kwon Jang-ho has this report.

Residents of Hokkaido woke up to the sounds of emergency sirens on Tuesday morning, warning

that a missile had been fired from North Korea and could hit areas nearby.

Luckily the missile was never a threat, heading way out into the Pacific Ocean.

However, it was still the first time a North Korean rocket had flown over Japanese territory

since 2012, and Tokyo was quick to condemn it, calling it an egregious threat to the

peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region.

(Japanese) Reuters 2100 "We have lodged a strong protest with North

Korea to that effect.

I call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council... and we will demand

even stronger measures against North Korea."

Abe later held a 40-minute phone call with President Trump, who assured the Japanese

Prime Minister that the U.S. was 100-percent with Japan.

A senior Tokyo official also told Kyodo News that the two leaders agreed that the time

is not right for dialogue with Pyongyang and that increased pressure is needed.

South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa also made a call to Washington and spoke with

her U.S. counter-part Rex Tillerson.

The two sides are said to have expressed their disappointment toward the regime's actions,

and pledged to continue working closely together to tackle the North Korea threat, including

at the U.N.

South Korea, the U.S. and Japan have jointly requested an emergency meeting of the U.N.

Security Council.

It's set to convene later on Tuesday, and three allies are likely to call for further

pressure on the rogue state.

However, China and Russia, North Korea's closest allies, are likely to push for dialogue.

Sergei Ryabkov, Moscow's deputy foreign minister, said on Tuesday that sanctions had reached

their limits, and that only a diplomatic solution was the answer.

News Wrap: North Korea fires missile over Japan - Duration: 4:08.

In the day's other news: North Korea has fired its second missile in three days, and, this

time, the Pentagon says it flew over Japan.

South Korea's military says the missile flew nearly 1,700 miles.

Japanese broadcaster NHK reports it triggered alarms on the island of Hokkaido.

There's no report of any damage.

A top official in the Trump Organization has acknowledged working on a Trump Tower for

Cohen gave the explanation to a House panel that's investigating possible Russia ties

to the Trump campaign.

The president will allow police departments to resume buying a wide range of surplus military

weapons and equipment.

In the wake of the police shooting and protests in Ferguson, Missouri, President Obama had

limited police access to everything from armored vehicles to grenade launchers to large-caliber

ammunition.

That was in 2015.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the rollback in a speech to the Fraternal Order

of Police meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

JEFF SESSIONS, U.S. Attorney General: The executive order that the president will sign

today will ensure that you can get the lifesaving gear you need to do your job and send a strong

message that we will not allow criminal activity, violence, and lawlessness to become a new

normal.

And we will save taxpayer money in the process.

MILES O'BRIEN: Police drew criticism in recent years for deploying heavy military gear in

response to mass protests against police killings.

There's more fallout from the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, two weeks ago.

In Berkeley, California, thousands rallied Sunday against hate.

But scores of masked anarchists overran police barricades and attacked several supporters

of President Trump.

Officers arrested 13.

In Charlottesville, hundreds turned out for a special town hall.

And he said they're for use against Israel.

In Jerusalem, Netanyahu told U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that the U.N. is not doing

enough to counter Iranian aggression.

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, Israeli Prime Minister: Iran is busy turning Syria into a base of

military entrenchment, and it wants to use Syria and Lebanon as war fronts against its

declared goal to eradicate Israel.

This is something Israel cannot accept.

This is something the U.N. shouldn't accept.

MILES O'BRIEN: Iran is fighting in Syria to aid President Bashar Assad, aided by the Lebanese

militant group Hezbollah.

Investigators warn the number of victims could go higher still.

In economic news, the effects of Hurricane Harvey sent oil prices tumbling and gas prices

rising.

But stocks had a quiet day.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost five points to close at 21808.

The Nasdaq rose 17 points, and the S&P 500 added a single point.
