first and foremost I want to make sure that our students have the best possible

learning opportunities and experiences I

firmly believe that international experiences are part of that they have

to have that overseas experience to get exposure to a different culture to

different values to different mindsets for various reasons of course many of

the professional programs require that you work with people from around the

world so understanding how they work how they actually think in say designing a

product is important but more more deeply I think it's it's enriching as a

person to understand how different cultures actually have evolved how

different values might seem odd strange or worse to us but if if observed in a

local context they all make sense my first and foremost drive to send

students abroad is to give them that experience to open their minds and have

them come back with an appreciation for differences if you look at the current

efforts that we we all engage with at the University of Michigan on increasing

diversity equity and inclusion that's exactly the same thing appreciating the

differences amongst people and utilizing those instead of rejecting and

inadvertently discriminating people because we don't know that their

thinking is different I think that's the key value for why I want students to go

abroad

University Reaches Decision On Firing Barbara Bush Critic - Duration: 8:58.

>>A FRESNO STATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR WHO HAD SOME STRONG

WORDS FOR BARBARA BUSH AFTER SHE PASSED AWAY WAS BEING THREATENED

BY POSSIBLY GETTING FIRED BUT IT TURNS OUT UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS

WILL NOT FIRE HER BECAUSE IT TURNS OUT SHE HAS SOMETHING

KNOWN AS FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.

IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE CONSTITUTION HAS MORE THAN

JUST THE SECOND AMENDMENT.

SHE IS A TENURED PROFESSOR BUT THAT IS NOT THE REASON WHY

SHE IS ABLE TO KEEP HER JOB.

FRESNO STATE AS PART OF THE CAL STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM IN

CALIFORNIA, IT IS PUBLICLY FUNDED MEANING THAT

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS ARE INTACT AND IF UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS FIRE

HER THEY ARE LITERALLY VIOLATING HER FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.

IT

SEEMED AS THOUGH THE UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS REALLY WANT

TO MAKE CLEAR THAT THEY DID NOT LIKE THE WAY SHE HANDLED

THE SITUATION.

EVEN GIVEN THE FACT THAT THEY DID NOT LIKE THE TWEETS

THEY STILL HAVE NO RIGHT TO FIRE HER.

>>COUPLE OF POINTS HERE.

IT BOTHERS ME THAT THEY KEEP CALLING IT DISGRACEFUL.

IN AMERICA IF YOU ARE IN FAVOR OF A WAR THAT KILLS

MILLIONS, NOT A BIG DEAL.

MILLIONS OF CIVILIANS BY THE WAY.

MIKE POMPEO PROBABLY GOING TO BECOME SECRETARY OF STATE

SOON, ETC.

BUT IF YOU ARE SLIGHTLY DISRESPECTFUL TO ANYONE IN

POWER, YOU CAN'T DO THAT.

NOBODY GETS FIRED FOR ACTUALLY KILLING THE CIVILIANS, BUT YOU

GET FIRED FOR SAYING THAT WASN'T SUCH A GREAT IDEA.

THAT IS WHAT SHE HAD ATTACKED BARBARA BUSH ABOUT.

BY THE WAY WHEN ASKED ABOUT CIVILIAN DEATHS IN IRAQ BARBARA

BUSH SAID HER BEAUTIFUL MIND COULDN'T BE BOTHERED WITH IT.

I WOULD ARGUE THAT THAT IS FAR MORE DISGRACEFUL A COMMENT

THAN ANYTHING A PROFESSOR SAID.

>> BARBARA BUSH WAS IN A POSITION OF POWER.

YOU ARE ABLE TO REFER TO HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS WHO

HAD TO BE DISPLACED IN THE HOUSTON ASTRODOME, YOU GET

TO REFER TO THEM AS UNDERPRIVILEGED AND THEY

ARE BETTER OFF IN THE ASTRODOME ANYWAY.

YOU CAN MAKE THOSE DISGRACEFUL STATEMENTS WITHOUT HAVING TO

WORRY ABOUT LOSING YOUR JOB.

I THINK FREE SPEECH ON PUBLICLY FUNDED COLLEGE CAMPUSES AS

INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE SPEECH IS.

AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT DOING SOMETHING UNCONSTITUTIONAL

ñ I BELIEVE IN PROTECTING THAT SPEECH.

IT IS A FREE MARKETPLACE OF IDEAS AND YOU CAN'T HAVE PUBLIC

EMPLOYEES FIRING PEOPLE FOR SPEECH OR BANNING THAT TYPE

OF SPEECH.

>> THE WASHINGTON POST POINTED OUT THAT TENURE SHOULD NOT

ABSOLVE ANYONE FROM THEIR CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR

VITRIOLIC WORDS.

NO, THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF TENURE.

IT IS TO ALLOW FOR WORDS THAT OFFEND WHETHER THEY ARE

RIGHT-WING OR NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE IN THE FREE MARKETPLACE

OF IDEAS.

THAT LEADS US TO POINT NUMBER THREE, THE HYPOCRISY OF THE

IDEA.

WHERE ARE THEY?

ON THE BENCH APPEARS IN THE MY LOVE?

WHENEVER

THEY ARE GETTING PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO SPEAK ON THIS CAMPUSES,

ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY ARE LIKE FREE SPEECH.

WE DEFEND THOSE GUYS.

WE THINK THEY ARE CLOWNS, WE THINK THEIR SPEECH IS

DISGRACEFUL BUT THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO SAY AND THEY HAVE A

RIGHT TO GET PAID A LOT OF MONEY AND I AM IN FAVOR OF THAT.

BUT I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT WING ONLINE IS NOT ANIMATED

ABOUT THIS PROFESSORS FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY COULDN'T CARE LESS, IN FACT THEY ARE THE

ONES WHO WANT HER FIRED FOR SPEAKING OUT.

>>HERE IS THE ISSUE, I DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE

ARE FAIR WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS LIKE THIS.

WE ARE ABLE TO LOOK AT BOTH SIDES, UNDERSTAND WHAT THE

RIGHT THING TO DO IS AND STILL WANT TO PROTECT THE SPEECH

OF THOSE WE DISAGREE WITH.

I THINK THAT MAKES YOU A GOOD PERSON WHO GENUINELY

BELIEVES IN THE CONSTITUTION.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME I GET BACK AND FORTH FROM FEELING PROUD OF

NOT HAVING THIS RIDICULOUS PRO-LIBERAL ANTI-CONSERVATIVE

STANCE TO FEELING LIKE I SUCK.

THE REALITY IS WHEN CONSERVATIVES DO WHAT THEY DO AT

BERKELEY, IT IS NOT REALLY ABOUT PROTECTING FREE SPEECH, THEY

HAVE PROTECTED A BUSINESS OUT OF CREATING A CIRCUS AROUND THEM.

THEY WANT ATTENTION, AND THE BEST WAY IS TO PUT YOURSELF

IN YOUR VICTIM'S SHOES.

IT'S ALL ABOUT GETTING INTO THE NEWS AND BEING PART OF A

CONVERSATION AND IT IS PATHETIC.

>>AT LEAST HAVE THE INTELLECTUAL CONSISTENCY SO YOU CAN

PRETEND LATER THAT YOU ARE HONEST IN PRINCIPLE.

BUT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO THAT?

>>OF COURSE NOT.

>>NOW YOU LOOK AT ALL THE RIGHT-WINGERS ONLINE

ATTACKING HER.

ONE OF THE GUYS SAID THIS IS NOT A MATTER OF FREE SPEECH, IT

IS A MATTER OF HUMAN DECENCY.

BUT RIGHT-WINGERS ARE IN FAVOR OF ANN COULTER COMING ON TO

COLLEGE CAMPUSES TALKING ABOUT HOW SHE IS UPSET ABOUT THE

BROWNING OF AMERICA.

>>SHE CALLS IMMIGRANTS PEASANTS.

SHE SAYS IMMIGRANTS FROM MEXICO ARE PEASANTS AND WE DON'T

WANT THEM HERE.

>>ANOTHER PERSON DECLARED WITH THE PROFESSOR SAID HERE ñ I KNOW

YOU CAN'T WAIT TO CHARGE OTHERS WITH RACISM SO I NEED TO EXPLAIN

TO YOU WHAT HATE SPEECH IS.

HATE SPEECH ISN'T I HATE THIS PERSON AND I HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT

THEM.

IT IS ABOUT A PARTICULAR GROUP.

THERE IS NO GROUP OF BARBARA BUSH IS THAT SHE OFFENDED AND

TARGETED.

SHE DID NOT LIKE BARBARA BUSH FOR THE THINGS BARBARA BUSH DID.

IF YOU HATE ME WHICH FOR A LOT OF YOU RIGHT-WING TROLLS, CHECK.

IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THAT, THAT IS NOT HATE SPEECH.

IT MAY NOT BE HATEFUL BUT IT IS NOT HATE SPEECH.

>>WE WOULD SUPPORT YOU IF YOU WANTED TO GO ON A COLLEGE

CAMPUS AND TALK ABOUT THAT.

>>THAT IS RIGHT.

>>HATE SPEECH IS IF YOU SAY I DON'T LIKE CENK NOT BECAUSE HE

IS A LEFT-WING WHATEVER, BUT I DON'T LIKE HIM BECAUSE HE IS A

NERDY TURKS AND I HATE ALL DIRTY TURKS.

I GUESS I AM JUST SO THICK-SKINNED I DON'T CARE

ABOUT ANYTHING.

BUT THAT WOULD BE HATE SPEECH BECAUSE YOU ARE ATTACKING A

WHOLE GROUP.

FINALLY MY FAVORITE ONE WAS A GUY WHO TWEETED, "JUST HEARD

THAT THE FAT DESPICABLE PAY WON'T FACE DISCIPLINE.

FRESNO STATE, CAMPUS OF WORTHLESS SCUM."

THIS GUY WANTS

HER FIRED FOR SAYING OFFENSIVE THINGS.

AND TOTALLY MISSED THE IRONY OF HIS TWEET.

Antidepressants and Bladder Medicines Linked to Dementia | University of East Anglia (UEA) - Duration: 1:41.

This piece of research is important because it's large scales was the

largest study of its kind in this particular area and the other very

important aspect is that we have to try and develop preventative or public

health mechanisms to reduce dementia if possible, so this may well lead

prescribers to consider more carefully and that therefore over time will reduce

the level of dementia. If people are worried about the medication. They should

go and see their prescribers which may well be the general practitioner or

discuss it with their pharmacist and get a medicine review in the community. They

shouldn't stop any of these medications some of them may well have withdrawal

symptoms or other adverse effects and then between the prescriber and the

patient they can make a decision about whether they want to stop or find an

alternative.

Trent University 3MT 2018: President's First Prize Winner, Chris Magwood - Duration: 2:52.

The story of my research here at Trent begins with my introduction to this Carbon elephant

that is on the screen beside me here.

And that Carbon elephant is made out of all the greenhouse gasses that are emitted when

building materials are harvested and manufactured.

And it turns out that about 20% to 25% of all greenhouse gasses on the planet come from

the harvesting and manufacturing of building materials.

But, I call it the Carbon elephant in the room because the building industry isn't really

talking about this issue.

For my research, what I wanted to do was model the same building using a different variety

of materials in each iteration of the building and see what the combination of embodied carbon

emissions and operational emissions looked like by the time we get to 2050.

So you can see behind me there are four graphs.

The very first building is a very typical code-built home: the way we build basically

all of our buildings in Ontario.

And you can see that by the time we get out to 2050, there's a significant amount of greenhouse

gas associated with that house.

But, most of it is embodied Carbon not operational Carbon.

The second building is an example of trying to solve a problem and causing a problem when

you are trying to solve the problem.

The second building is a high-performance home that tries to address the operational

Carbon of the building by making that building really energy efficient.

But it does so with really high embodied Carbon materials.

And so you can see by the thickness of that orange stripe on the bottom that even though

you can barely see the operational Carbon on that graph, the total Carbon is significantly

higher than the code-built home.

So in trying to make a building more energy efficient, you can mistakenly cause greater

Carbon emissions than if you just built to code.

Now the two bottom graphs there are the ones that really interest and excite me, because

they completely flip the paradigm upside down.

These are buildings that use materials that actually store Carbon in the materials.

So, if you build with plant-based materials those plants have taken Carbon Dioxide out

of the atmosphere and when you lock those materials up in the building, you've stored

that Carbon.

So you can see that the net emissions of those two bottom buildings are below zero and as

their operational Carbon emissions gradually rise over time, by the time you get to 2050

you're still a net Carbon sequesterer in that building.

So the end point of my research is to propose a policy suggestion for the building code

here in Ontario that would regulate that embodied Carbon side of the equation and try to encourage

us more toward the lower-type of building and leave the other buildings behind.

And, hopefully, usher this Carbon elephant out of the room.

2018 Scholarship Reception | Maryville University - Duration: 1:29.

To me scholarships are about not just making education a little bit more

affordable but it's also about carrying on the legacy. I was so excited about

giving that that made it I haven't missed a year since then. I want the

opportunity for as many students as possible to come to Maryville, graduate

from Maryville, and go out and spread the Maryville word. So anybody who is looking

for a way to put their money to good use I would think suggest that they consider

Maryville. So the scholarship has allowed me to actually attend the college of my

dreams. There's not a lot of Music Therapy schools out in the state of

Missouri and so it means a lot to be able to come to Maryvillel and pursue

my passion. This scholarship has meant the world to me.

I know I'm secure in furthering my education.

Oh it's meant everything to me. It makes me want to tear up because like I said

without her I couldn't continue my education so she's gonna make my dreams

come true. Maryville University and the scholarship

I've been awarded has been a superb opportunity. It is open doors for me that

I could not have imagined if otherwise. So I encourage any other donors to go

ahead and make the commitment and help another student out.
