Every 98 seconds, an american is assaulted.

Would you know what to do when faced with an assailant?

Doctor Nita wanted to know so she headed

to a self-defense class to learn the best moves

to stop an attack.

I've always wanted to take self defense classes,

so today I'm hooking up with two of the top trainers

in the country and I'm gonna learn some moves.

(energetic music)

What made you start Divas in Defense?

I have over 12 years experience of being

a personal body guard.

And once my daughter was born,

it was just something that I wanted to do for her.

And from her mother being a survivor of domestic violence.

What's a good age for people to start self defense class?

It's never too late, but we start at the age of four.

Wow.

Princess karate.

Ready to learn some moves today?

I am ready!

Let's get it going!

So we're gonna start with our defensive stance.

Your gonna yell out something, okay?

Defensive stance.

Get away from me.

Palm heel.

(women yelling)

Defensive stance.

(women yelling)

OK, your next strike is gonna be a hammer fist.

So really what I want you to do is just

"yah, yah, yah" real fast.

Hammer!

(women yahing)

So it's a good idea to scratch if you can.

Yes, and what you wanna do is pull me down

as you bring this knee up.

Yah!

Yah!

Yah!

Right, just like that, get your arm off me.

What if somebody tries to grab you from the rear?

What do you do?

And you know what we call this one, ladies?

Oh no you didn't.

Yah!

Yah!

Move. Yah!

Kick. Yah!

Yah, yah!

Hammer. Yah!

Kick. Yah!

Palm, heel. Yah, Yah!

Kick. Yah!

Knee.

Great job, great job, whoo.

How do you feel?

Fierce and fabulous.

Why?

'Cause I believe it.

(clapping)

Well, that looked therapeutic for you.

That's a side of you I've never seen.

(laughing)

Yeah, I'm moving a little further away,

You were pretty good with those yah yahs.

And if I can do it, everybody can do it.

Well and you look like you were having an enjoyable time

learning something really important.

And joining us now are certified self-defense trainers

Christopher Britto and Cole Parker.

Kudos to you two for what you're doing.

I think it's such a great

(clapping and cheering)

a great thing that you're doing.

Because I can see your confidence even building

as that class was evolving.

Yes, you feel empowered.

And I felt, is that what you guys,

you're really empowering people to be proactive?

Yes, that's exactly what we're doing.

The empowerment side,

there's a lot more for them than just

you know, the moves itself.

Chris and Cole, tell us a couple things to watch out for,

so that we're not in the fighting mode.

How do we avoid it all together?

So, we want you to be very aware of your surroundings.

You know, as you walk down the street,

don't be in your phone, don't text someone,

don't have your ear buds in your ear.

You know, just be more aware, look around.

(clapping)

Chris and Cole, I see the sound effects,

are a real important part of this.

That if you, you know,

yell and act really assertive,

that in itself may be a bit deterring.

Startling.

Very starting.

Yeah, If you, whoa, this is a tough,

This is a tough chick.

Yeah, a tough chick, I'm backing off.

Well, like with any situation,

even in the wild, when it comes to predator and prey,

they look for the weaker ones.

So, when you present a demeanor that you're not weak,

that you're strong,

and that you're not the one to be messed with,

a lot of times that thwarts any situation of attack.

Speaking of situations,

before I get your biggest take away,

because I am curious,

where are the most common places

we need to be aware that an attack could occur?

I hate to admit it, but your home.

In addition you got a parking lot,

running trails, and for college students,

on college campuses.

So, Dr. Nita, after that day of training,

what did you learn?

What was the biggest take away?

For me, I feel like everybody can benefit from this.

Women, children, men.

And I like that they teach you practical things.

They're not trying to teach you to be

like an expert in unarmed combat.

They're teaching you moves that you can easily learn,

and they're practical,

and the moves can literally save your life.

So, the biggest take away is,

take the class.

Like, everybody I know, take the class.

And Nita, was it a work out?

(laughing)

Yes.

Were you sore the next day?

Oh my gosh, like the kicking knee.

(laughing and chatter)

Well you were really aggressive

with that knee to the groin.

(laughing)

I can see the two of your getting a little nervous

as she was getting more rambunctious,

but, keep up the great work.

Thank you.

(clapping and cheering)

And I love this, it's all about empowerment,

we will have more about self-defense classes

on our website.

Easy and soft.

Ow!
